My girlfriend brought me here because she knows I'm into anime and looking for some toys from my childhood to fill my display cases. Yes, there were a lot of awesome figures and statues to see that bring back some nostalgia to when I was kid. However, a lot of the toys both in package, on card, or loose were a bit overpriced. Some figures had horrible sun damage to them seeing as this location is in a warehouse type building. The lady behind the counter wasn't helpful as we walked in and around the front in for about 10-15 minutes before she even said hi. After that she just walked around putting things away and sat behind the counter. Now what's upsetting? My girlfriend found this 3-pack of Shattered Glass Transformers (Evil Dinobots) from SDCC. I clearly asked if I could open them and she said they were new. I didn't like that answer and how snappy she was with me. I kept them in the box until I got my new display case and Lord behold, they're all broken. All 3 figures wastes are popped off and will not plug into the bodies or stay in place, Grimlock's dino head is snapped, the plus to keep Slag's dino head on its body are broken, and some of Snarl's scales are broken. There's no point in keeping them. And I would feel bad, like the owner should feel, if I were to try and sell them off broken to anyone else. read more

Shop located in Oakland that specializes in collectibles and primarily Manga and Anime IPs and characters. The place looks like it's located within a residential home so it threw me off at first. But there's a sign at the front. The folks here are very friendly and they're very knowledgeable. In terms of value, it's hard to say only because there are a lot of items that are highly collectible in addition to your run of the mill, newer IP's. In my opinion, I feel like the prices are pretty fair, especially since they may have some hard to find pieces that collectors are looking for. I came here with my nephew before we had dinner in the area. He's a big fan of anime and manga and especially things related to Godzilla. He ended up buying a figure. I drove over an hour to visit this vintage anime store after hearing about it from a stranger, I was initially hit with nostalgia and was enjoying looking around. The problem arose when I asked on pricing for some items I was Interested in. I asked the price for a couple of Tenchi muyo posters that were both displayed in a clear giant sleeve. There was a $35 price tags on each side of the sleeve. I was confused if the price was for both posters or per poster since they were from the same series. I asked the owner and she was immediately offended. I even said, "I apologize I didn't mean to offend you." and she had the audacity to get another customers attention nearby and say " hey, can you believe that he asked me if the price was for both when there is a price on each side?"...The customer looked uncomfortable and confused, as was I. She also tried to change the price on a vhs tape and charge me $5 more dollars when it had a $5 price tag already on it. I begrudgingly purchased the poster and two vhs tapes only because I drove out so far and I didn't want to leave them behind. I won't be coming back and will not recommend that you waste your time here. My son and I were looking for a Bay Area place that sold Godzilla toys and this came up near the top of the list. The front is pretty unassuming and you would never guess what was beyond the facade. As soon as you walk in it open up into an amazing vintage Japanese setting. You're greeted by a giant pikachu and ultra man along with a few taiko drums. The owner was working and she immediately greeted us. My daughters were interested in Sonny angel so I told them I'd look out for them. The store had it but they were definitely on the pricier side than the $11.50 we were used to. There's a wide variety of different toys and vintage items and we found three full racks of Godzilla stuff. Again they were a little pricey but we managed to walk out of there with a couple of figures. The owner noticed what my son was interested in and gave him a one million dollar Godzilla buck. Let me just say, ignore the negative reviews below. You can check their instagram which they update whether they'll be open or not on the weekend. If not, give them a call and they'll confirm. That said, this place is a hidden gem as it's located in an alley street in front of FedEx. I took my son and my father who are huge Kamen Rider fans, and we were stuck in the store for over an hour. Very huge selection of vintage figures of any Japanese hero you can think of from 1980s to 2000s that are hard to find nowadays. An amazing curated display of collectible Japanese toys. Clothes, figures and so many other cool things. A somewhat deliberate secret, so only let nice people know! I got a glow in the dark Akira shirt, my son picked up some Pokemon cards, and we got a Sanrio figure for my youngest kid. I love this place! It's poorly organized and you would never know it was there unless you found it on Yelp or Google Maps. There is no iconic sign over what is essentially a dank warehouse in Emeryville but the treasure within is amazing. If you like Japanese Anime and classic die-cast metal toys, this place is a treasure trove of stuff. Focused more on older toys including used ones than new pieces, they use the warehouse as part of their online eBay business. Their hours are short but if you get the chance and you like those classic anime toys you are in for a treat. This place is so much fun to look through. For an anime fan like myself this was awesome. This place is a REAL HIDDEN GEM. Don't be worried about the 1 star reviews, owner was injured for a while and had to keep shop closed for a while. It is back open to the public 1:30-5pm Friday-Sunday! I absolutely love this place and am amazed by the selection of all things Japanimation. Went here for a birthday, and was pleasantly surprised when I entered the store. They had so many options of merchandise, and was all so cheap. I doubt some of the items for sale were authentic, but I am not much of a serious collector of figures, so I didn't mind, and honestly appreciated the prices. A rare gem worth the journey - one of the coolest small shops I've had the pleasure of stumbling upon for Japanese vintage toys and anime goods. The selection leans towards 60's/70's to the early 2000's for Japanese toys and fanfare. It's hard to explain this store, but I do love it. If you love Japanese monster movies and retro anime you will love it too. Shopping here can feel like a cross between a antique store and a museum, there are mostly items from the 70's to 2000 and that means everything is vintage. There are Vintage Godzilla and friends figures, Ultraman, sailor moon, Pokémon, Totoro, Astro boy, and many other memories from my childhood here. I can't believe I haven't been here before even though it's been around for so long! This store has a wonderful collection of sci-fi and anime toys. Lots of cool vintage toys, too. I came here looking for small vintage Ultra Kaiju figurines for my boyfriend, as there were only a few at Giant Robot in LA. Turns out they had all of them here! The staff person was very helpful and knowledgeable. He told me some interesting facts about the show and the figurines (I was pretty clueless; I was just going to buy one that looked cool). Before helping me, he was patiently and enthusiastically explaining different figurines and TV shows to a kid who was interested in the toys. It was great to see friendly staff who knew the products well. This place wasn't too hard to find (with the advice from Yelp reviews!), but when you're around that area, you'll probably wonder if you're in the right place or not. It's next to a red brick building (the McLaughlin Coffee Company). Just look for the address -- you should see 1455 above a small door of a light colored building. The Ultraman figurine confirmed that I was in the correct location. They're only open Fridays and weekends. Sailor Moon is one hot, under-age chick...and there are tons of creepy old dudes that will tell you the same thing. You can meet them here, at Kimono My House. I love this store. It's hidden away in a nondescript building on a quiet street, and you have to walk up a couple of flights of stairs and past a kiddie ballet school to get there, but it's worth the huffin' and puffin'. When you walk in you're immediately immersed in a land of magical Anime characters, all of which are yours for the taking...for a semi-reasonably priced fee, of course. The guys here are awesome, and boy, do they know their Japanese Anime. At any given moment, there will be a bootleg copy of some random, extremely rare Japanese import playing on their little television. An old school gen Xer anime fan's wet dream come true in the form of a rooftop small business antique store! I swear you need to bring tissues the moment you walk in as something will come out of your body, one way or more. F the new age of anime, whether it be anything that ends in MON, or the lame crap after the 90s as well as American dubbed horrors, we're talking Macross, Mospeada, Orguss, that robot with the #17 on its chest, the robot with the lion on its chest, Voltron, the 5 tigers that make a robot, the OG transformers, this red robot with eyes that looks like part buttcheeks part Volkswagen bug (VERY old school), ultraman, space adventure cobra (psycho gun and babe magnet), astroboy, the original Mobile Suit Gundam from 1979 onwards, doraemon (Japanese Felix the Cat), and even Totoro era Miyazaki to name a few. Dare I say they might even have the Micromen and Micronauts by Takara toys as well... This is a collectors and antiques store at the same time. If you grew up during the 60s, 70s, or even the 80s and played with Japanese die cast metal toys/robots and the ilk, chances are you REALLY played with them and/or tore off a limb, lost a missile, used up a sticker and abused the hell out of it, unlike geek and business like collectors of today who buy toys just to store them away and hope they will increase in value. The owner of the store if I remember correctly is Yuki-san who really knows his stuff, and is an uber fanboy himself (I figure he must be in his 50s or older now, since I have not stepped foot in here for 10 years). If you want to relive that part of your childhood, do check this place out. While there are tons of shops like this in Taiwan, Hong Kong, and and Japan, I say this store is one of a kind and you will not likely see such a vast and awesome collection. Great eye candy, but if you do want to relive your childhood at home, it will cost a pretty penny (e.g. in 97, Roy Fokker [and boy is it tempting to change that o to u] VF-1S skull leader Takatoku battroid was a whooping $300 in VG+/M- condition). Collectibles from the past are pricey, because they were not produced in mass quantities, were in quality, and of course now rare because a lot of people threw away boxes and abused/played with toys. You certainly won't see your local Toys R Us junk being priced at $300 for a now $6 item in 20 years, that's for sure. Sadly there's no market for old school animation soundtracks on LP, I've got quite a few Macross LPs that I bought from Japan in the 80s, still in very nice shape. KMH turned them down. Even the beautiful Orguss theme song jukebox 7" with the cute gal on the cover. Or Lynne Minmay painted cover on the Rhapsody In Love x2 LP box sets. Doh? read more

We used to go here all the time at their old location, up the five flights of stairs to the top of the roof (not for weak hearts). Their new location is much easier to get to, but street parking is still a problem (typical for Emeryville). There's no sign or store marking, so look for the address on the outside, up the street from the FedEx warehouse. Once inside, you're greeted by a giant-size Ultraman, so you know you're in the right place. The store is filled with your classic Japanese sci-fi toys, figures, t-shirts & other cool stuff. We weren't intending to buy much, but we spent 50 bucks anyway because they have way too much cute stuff. Ryan behind the counter was great & it was good to see that Susan is still around. The original owner, Yuki passed couple of years ago, but it's good to see that Kimono is still around to serve us old school, sci-fi geeks. read more

She used to cart supply all the way down to comic con in San Diego where I lived at the time. Went today and got some great things at very reasonable prices. Kimono My House continues to be one of the few remaining bastion of a toy collector's eclectic dream. A toy store that houses the nostalgia of 80's and 90's all things Japan that defines the four letter word POPY. In many ways this little secret den of a store has always been a hidden fortress of sorts, but once you find this little gem of a store, you'll be amazed at the amount of goods it houses underneath this un-assuming name. If nothing else just the adventure of finding this store should warrant gokin and old school popy collectors to seek this toy house out. ( trust me, bring a smart phone with google maps to find this place..) The only downfall to this store I would say is that collectors of more modern gokin will find it a bit disappointing. Nonetheless if its 80's or 90's mecha toys you're looking for then I would suggest you give this store a shot. read more

Random as hell, but surely this falls into the 'signature Emeryville aesthetic experience' category. Imagine a giant warehouse. Tons of Astroboy collectibles, Godzilla paraphernalia, you name it. Shelves creating faux walls and it feels like you just walked into someone's lifetime stash of Japanese toys. Oh, and it's extremely unassuming and hard to find. I'm giving this four stars because it is such a fascinating store, and it must be mecca for anime fans. To get to it, you climb to the third floor of a warehouse building, and walk across the roof, through a desert roof garden, and into the little store at the back. I was a little disappointed, myself, because I was hoping to find a general assortment of Japanese toys and books, and almost everything here is specifically anime related. The owner is extremely friendly, but I wouldn't say this store is for the casual browser. Kimono My House is an unreal TREASURE TROVE of import collectibles. Seems totally out of place, but this place is PACKED with trinkets, on top of a random warehouse. Just a plain, nondescript building on the corner. I never leave empty handed. Did I need a small plush Totoro trinket with a leaf umbrella and a green sac and a Sailor Jupiter transform brooch and pen? HELL YEAH! Part of this place's charm is its inaccessibility. It's on the roof of a building- you have to climb three or four flights of stairs to get there. The proprietor is friendly but for the most part uncommunicative. But Kimono My House is Old-School. They have Anpan Man. They have all the old-school Macross toys, including the Zentraedi battle pods and officer pods. Godzilla miniatures. Bootleg tapes of 1970's kung fu shows. The "Go Riders." Anime stuff- the complete selection of Urusei Yatsura figures. And they have the more obscure new stuff- I saw some Pinky Street here. read more

I just went there. It's a wonderful toy/specialty store, but you have to be into the Japanese anime (which you must remember includes favorites like Totoro) and monster genre. It's not easy to find, so be sure to check out their Web site for directions. You have to walk up three flights of stairs (and there are no signs outside). Once you get there, you can't miss it. Wow! This place was so cool. Filled with vintage and limited edition Japanese toys. Lots of different kinds from Astro boy, Star Wars, sailor moon, totoro, batman, and more. For any anime or toy enthusiast, it is a must see. The prices are very reasonable on most items. Their hours can vary which may be tough, but they generally are open Friday through Sunday. There is no sign out front and they just kinda open the warehouse garage door which peaks into all of the crazy mess of toys. It's in the middle of an industrial area and is quite an adventure to get to, but is so worth it. Take your comic and anime loving friends. They are sure to get a kick out of this place.
