Being from Michigan, we've got certain foods that we've had or have ate in our lifetime that are just a 'thing' for us. My girlfriend is from Louisiana, and i feel like they pretty much eat anything. So when I told her about a Pastie -- and how we ate it any time we went hunting in the UP in MI, and she gave me this crazed look.... I knew at some point i was going to have to get her to try one. Let's get up to current day --- i was looking for a place where we could go eat dinner and came across Mr. Pastie on Yelp. Amazed and shocked -- i checked out the pictures and knew that i had to get some of them to try. I came in during the morning -- and WOW the selection was huge. Never had i saw some one do a philly style, mexican, or cordon bleu pastie. My mind was blown. I purchased SEVERAL. Some that I was eager to try, some more basic ones i could give to my girlfriend and my roommate (who was from Mississippi). It was a hit. It was great to be able to share some well crafted pasties with my friends and family and share some of my "home-style" food with them. Onto the store --- it's very small, but everyone in side was extremely friendly. Especially when they found out that I was from Michigan. They even wanted some tips and feedback from me on how they tasted. So --- here is my feedback. Delicious. Tips? Go try one. It's a dough pouch filled with a variety of meat or vegetables options. Beef and potato can be purchased hot or frozen. Most other varieties are typically available frozen. I love pasties, but unfortunately, they're not easy to find in California, at least not "authentic" ones. Once upon a time in Eastern Pennsylvania, they were popular with steel workers. Think Bethlehem Steel. At Mr. Pastie's, these delicious pasties are made by just 7 or so employees. Amazing. To our dismay, we didn't have the opportunity to see them actually being made, since they're made in the mornings, and we arrived in the afternoon. However, you can see the machines they use for the dough. The edgings of the crust are all finger-crimped. I loved these! I got the Original Traditional beef, which was generously filled with potatoes and beef. It could've benefited from a tad more seasoning, but I prefer food under seasoned, as opposed to way over seasoned. If you want additional flavoring, you can add ketchup, hot sauce, or bottled beef gravy. I loved it plain. What I loved most was the crust. Absolutely loved the crust!! Especially the ever so slight crispy, but doughy edges. Just make sure to enjoy them immediately when they're slightly warm, and at their peak of freshness. You can take them home and reheat them, but I just don't they'll be the same. They're also sold frozen in grocery stores, but I'm not so sure they'll come out as perfect, unless you have a huge massive commercial oven at home. This is a simple, no frills take out place, so don't expect any seating whatsoever, nor atmosphere. Not to worry though. If you do it right, you'll enjoy it right away in their parking lot...and you'll want to come back again, like me! I'm definitely coming back one more time before we leave here! read more

If I'm passing through Pen Argyl I'm stopping at Mr. Pastie. Good variety and easy to make. Cooking instructions are suggestions as far as time and temperature so keep an eye on it if it's your first time trying these meat pies. I also would recommend covering the folded crust with tin foil to avoid burning it, just like a pie. read more

My brother and I came from California for a friends wedding. We both have had meat pasties in Australia and England, this place was very very close. It was a lovely trip to the past, the owner came out when we were purchasing and was so sweet. Being able to see the entire staff making everything by hand, smiling and genuinely enjoying their work enviroment. read more

I helped make pasties for our church when I was a kid. Grinding meat, cutting potatoes, grinding carrots, cutting onions. That was over 40 years ago. I have not had a pastie since. A few days ago, I set foot in Mr. Pastie's in Pen Argyl for the first time. A handful of very pleasant workers were assembling baked goods. A friendly gentleman greeted me at the counter. I bought one baked and one frozen pastie. Biting into my pastie, I was instantly taken back to my childhood. This is an extremely similar product to the one we made, and I am so grateful I finally tried their product. I *will* be back! read more
