A Welsh immigrant named Robert Morris Jones (1827-1886) arrived in 1848 and set up several slate quarries. The industry continued to expand throughout the 19th century, reaching its peak production in 1903, this part of the country was full of Welsh immigrants working in slate quarries. Before World War I, the Slate Belt became the world's greatest slate producing regions despite being a small area of 22 miles. The Welsh workers needed a hearty meal, and over 70 years ago, a lady opened up Mr Pastie Bakery. I enjoyed my pastie and fruit pies! The service was wonderful and welcoming! Allison is a great host, and she makes the pasties by hand! It's a work of art, really! You can choose from a big menu of pasties. The ones they have baked and hot are the traditional beef with potatoes and onions. The rest you can call an hour before and she'll have them cooked and ready for you, or you can take them home frozen and bake them for around 50 minutes. They are perfectly made, so delicious, comfort food with flaky pastry. They also have fruit pies, I got cherry and apple, and they were great! So happy to see history and culture preserved here!
