We heard great things about Mr. Wong from chef friends as well as yelp and we were so disappointed. We worked going to this place into our schedule as our post Harbour Bridge walk meal. We entered the restaurant and noticed the nice ambiance and the tables of people all around us looking happy. Perhaps it was our appearance of not being dressed up for a night out, but weren't greeted immediately (the hostess was chatting / laughing with her colleague.) When she finally noticed my husband by the podium she smiled and welcomed him. She notified us that the wait would be 45 mins, took our phone number and notified us that they would text us when our table was ready, but if we didn't hear back, "come back at a quarter past 10 pm to check." She swiftly returned to her conversation. We went outside not knowing what to do for 45 mins, I instructed my husband to inquire if there was a bar where we could wait. He didn't want to interrupt her conversation, so he waited a few mins for her to acknowledge him again and she pointed out the bat on the main level to the left. It was very crowded but I found a seat and we ordered a Peach Iced Tea and a Tokyo Protocol. The bartender we originally ordered from kindly notified us that a colleague would be making our drinks and we saw him begin washing and drying glass as the restaurant was busy. A woman brought us our drinks a while later and they were both very good. We sat conversing about the plans for the next day while waiting for our table (with air conditioning blasting us in the head.) A few patrons around us were collected at the bar for their tables and 10:15pm finally came! My husband went back to the hostess to check in staying that we hadn't received a text. She started that the next table was ours and he told her that we were at the bar. We had two other patrons nearby get seated again and we were so over this restaurant by then. Let's tally up so far! 1. Rude welcome 2. Not offering the bar to wait 3. AC blasting right at the bar 4. Waited a while for our drinks 5. Everyone around us were getting called for their table except us. We asked our original bartender for our bill and he stated that it could be transferred to the table. We explained that we had been waiting long and were told we were next and saw others get seated before us, we were done waiting and wanted to leave. He apologised and got us a table right away and even went to the manager to let him know what happened. When we say at our table the manager apologized again and told us that our drinks at the bar were on the house for the confusion. We were grateful and happy to finally sit and order. Upon looking at the menu we were excited to try a few different dishes. We ordered the variety of steamed dim sum, wok mushrooms, crab fried rice, and kung pao chicken. In my defense, I inquired to know if the kung pao had a twist or prepared in a way that made it unique to the restaurant, the server recommended it and said it was good. (and he accidentally spit on my face while telling me about the chili's in the dish.) The dim sum came out and each was described. They were big pieces and pretty normal. Nothing special about these dumplings. The rest of our meal came out all together and the rice looked amazing! It had this crunchy stuff all over it. We dug right in! Holy SUGAR! The mushrooms and kung pao were drenched in a sweet sauce. The chili's weren't spicy. Maybe we didn't order the right dishes. I was so sad that the food was just meh. We were paying a lot of money for a horrible experience and mediocre food. The presentation wasn't even special. HUGE DISAPPOINTMENT. Oh on top of our food being so bad that I described it as a punishment meal (I felt obligated to eat as much of it because of the high cost) our server never came back to check on us or even give is the bill. He was there but never helped us again; we had to ask for a box and the check from another waitress helping the tables next to us. My husband went to the bar and tipped the bartender that helped us as he was still doing dishes (he wasn't a barback, it was just so busy) We left exact change and left. I wasn't the happiest with crab fried rice (seemed like they just threw a bunch of crab dust all over the rice - which took away from the flavor). Also, from the reviews and description I thought that this place was going to be a tiny, family owned business. The place is huge and we had to wait for an hour just to sit 2 people. The skin was very delicate, but I didn't think it was very juicy. The xiao long Bao was good, but not as good as other places I've had. They were also larger than normal and boo with no ginger. Pork belly wasn't special but the salt & pepper Morton Bay bug was like nothing I've ever eaten. Imaginative. Save room for dessert although it is a difficult decision. On the weekends, they have a special morning yum cha only menu, whereas for dinner, they don't offer their dim sum menu except for the platter. So I made a reservation for lunch for the best of both worlds! Mr. Wong is located in an alley...you won't be able to see it from the Main Street (Bridge St) so I had a hard time finding it. I ordered various dumplings, the wagyu puff, shrimp toast, and the pork hock. I have to say that the pork hock is the best pork hock I've ever had. They shred the meat off the bones and deep fry them in cubes and serve it with sweet and sour sauce. So yummy! My favorite dumpling was the golden crab dumpling which comes with a soup. I was not a fan of the shrimp toast. The toast was pretty tough and you could not taste the foie gras at all. The prices here are a bit high for dim sum (compared to other options like Tim Ho Wan) but it's definitely a unique menu that you can't get elsewhere. I'd recommend coming here to try read more

A fabulous meal with very attentive service. We got there early and -- probably because of the early hour -- were immediately seated. The restaurant, located on a quiet, quirky alley in the middle of the CBD, is beautiful and apparently always crowded. There are at least four seating areas including a counter that fronts one of the kitchens and a very large bar. The service was very knowledgeable and quite welcoming. We had the steamed dim sum sampler to start and it may have been the highlight of this great meal. Everything was a dumpling but each had wonderful flavors (mushrooms to scallops and shrimp). We followed the dim sum with the pepper prawns, mapo tofu and green beans with pork. All were elegantly served and each had just the amount of spice for the dish. Scrawny portions for the prices paid. If you are white and have never travelled to China, this is the place for you to waste an exorbitant amount of money on food that you can get for cheap in Chinatown. Any Asians reading reviews of Mr Wong should note that most of the five star reviews were left by white people that wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Konichiwa and Nihao. The ambience, decor, staff dress etc. are not reminiscent of "old elegant China", rather the atmosphere is just that of a classy restaurant. Anyone who grew up in the Canton region of China where dim sum originated can tell you that yum cha and classy are oxymoronic. Despite the lack of understanding towards actual Chinese decor, the food quality was indeed high. I ordered the Xiaolongbao, steamed rice roll (cheong fan), angus beef fried noodle and tossed egg noodles (low mein). All tasted fine, but two dishes stood out and not in the good way. As mentioned in the first paragraph, portions were tiny. The Xiaolongbao was good but for $13 you only get 6 pieces - may as well get the same dish from Din Tai Fung for cheaper. The angus beef fried noodles were too salty as well. There were items on the menu that clearly aren't Chinese dishes, such as the deep fried bacon cheese bun, which leads to two implications. Either Mr Wong does not understand Chinese cuisine, or the restaurant is a tourist trap catered towards white people that don't understand Chinese cuisine. Service was apt, and we did not wait long considering we rocked up as a group of 7 without making a reservation and were sat down within 5 minutes. TL;DR if you're rich and don't care about authenticity, Mr Wong is a place where you can get delicious semi-Chinese dishes. read more

Quite possibly the best meal we had in all of Australia. I'm really against overpriced, fancy, done up Chinese food but this place is unbelievable. The ambiance is upscale, service is impeccable but it's the food that really shines here. The crab fried rice was spectacular and the fried tofu was good but not mind blowing. But it was the "Shandong style" Roasted Angus beef shortrib that was the star. The soy and shallot sauce it was dressed in was insanely delicious. Since they were sold out of Peking duck they suggested this instead and we were glad they did. This place isn't cheap by any means and you definitely need reservations days in advance. With reservations we got our table at 10 pm but the place was still packed. All for good reason. One of the best restaurants we've eaten at anywhere. read more

This was my first time having dim sum and wow am I ever glad this was the spot. Really cool, tucked away in an alley, if you blink you'll miss the entryway. The staff were nice, though we were somehow upsold bottled water without asking for it, and they have a really interesting selection of dumplings! I had the spinach and mushroom dumplings, and they were really delish, but they have all sorts of other cool fillings like calamari & foie gras! After having only been in Sydney for an hour or so we had already penciled in Mr Wong as a must do, we weren't even too sure they would be open being so close to Christmas but they were and we were very lucky that we Didn't even need to line up. The setting of the restaurant itself is awesome, very trendy and a warm feeling about it, staff were friendly but the only small let down was the fact we were seated for 10 minutes without even a drink order being offered. But then the food..... Ridiculous, so full of flavour and all he dishes we had blew us away. We will certainly be back next time we come to Sydney. The food is however mediocre, or bad. The fried rice was quite good with plenty of shrimps. But the string beans and beef cubes were too salty and is quite average. The beef was too dried. I could get the same food in any average Chinese restaurants which would cost half the price. The conclusion is: I am paying at least $10 more for each dish for the decor, not the food. The two dishes were too salty even. Not impressed. Since it is a nice place, it deserves a comment about their service. It was mediocre. They took the order and delivered the food. What a great experience. We sat at the bar, which we do in America. Apparently it's not a popular option here, but as such, we had the bar table to ourselves! Fried rice was perfect. Light, fluffy, not covered in soy sauce or oily. Sautéed greens was so simple and flavorful. Perfect accompaniment to the dishes. Then the fried Balmain Bugs, which is actually a butterfly fan lobster found in Australia, was great. Light airy breading and the bug was as good and succulent as lobster. This place is the place to go for Chinese dim sum style of food. The line was about 50-75 deep about 15-20 minutes before they opened. If I was giving a review only for food, it would be a 5 star, but the service was pretty bad because there were so many people at one time. We didn't even know who our server was that night, that's how bad it was. We kept on asking different people for water, the check, to order, pretty much everything. We had our 2 young kids which was hard because they get fussy and can't sit around for a long time. What we ordered: -Half order of the duck pancakes: very expensive for no reason. The duck tasted good, but it wasn't great. -Crab fried rice: recommended by the server--again, good, but not great. Nothing made it that special. -Fried eggplant: this was my favorite dish. More interesting flavors and who doesn't love fried stuff? -Lobster dumplings: the second favorite dish. Nice wrapper and lobster filling. Overall it has a great ambiance, the servers dress nicely, and they pour heavy with the alcohol. Started with the duck pancakes - great flavours and just the right amount of crispy skin. Followed up with in order of brilliance; Cripy eggplant (this was the best eggplant I have eaten ever); Beans with Pork, Chicken Kung Pau & Steamed Rice. To finish we shared Deep Fried Icecream (this was also brilliant). The only reason I am not awarding 5 stars, is because you can only book for tables of 6 or more. Loved the decor of the place - very old style Chinese furnishing & decorations mixed in with contemporary elements. Had lunch there to celebrate my mum's birthday & we tried their dim sum menu. The food that we had was excellent & it tasted better than your average Chinese restaurants in Chinatown. Highly recommended dishes are the Xiao Long Bao & the Foie Gras prawn toast. Prices for dim sums range from $9 - $12 so it is slightly more pricey than other places. However the food were surprisingly not as oily as I usually expect from yum cha dishes which was great. The staff are all friendly & helpful and their service was pretty good. Overall I enjoyed my first visit to Mr Wong & I will certainly go back again for dinner and try out their drinks menu & desserts! read more

I can't say that Mr. Wong is the most authentic Chinese food I've ever had. However, the overall experience we had dining here in a large group was fantastic. For starters, the decor and feel of this restaurant is not like a traditional Chinese restaurant. It is definitely more hip with exposed brick, clear windows into the kitchen, and lots of antique decoration along the shelving. It definitely feels like more modern, Westernized decor. We ordered a handful of dishes to share among our large group - ranging from the duck pancake wraps, to crab, lobster, pork noodles, stewed pork shoulder, crab fried rice, fried eggplant, a sashimi dish, and more! I must say that the standouts were the duck pancake wraps and the stewed pork shoulder. For those who are traveling from the states, the seafood is a must! The prawns, lobster, and crab were HUGE and unlike anything I've ever been served. Definitely not dishes for those who are on a diet, but everything was so rich in flavor and fat that we all left feeling bloated and content. We decided to go here based on recommendations from friends and because it was in our travel book. It is in a random alley, so don't be scared off by this. First off, make a reservation! The place is huge, but it gets packed! We luckily were able to walk in before a rush of people flocked in. The food is delicious but spendy! Come here and you will get a good meal, but you will pay for it! I believe our fried rice was $26, although the portions are large and are meant for sharing. My husband had the sweet and sour ham hocks and LOVED them! He gave it a 10/10 which is rare for him. I am a vegetarian and had the vegetarian low mein. My favourite restaurant in Sydney. Hard to find, but once inside it transports you to a different world. Fun, with seriously good food.

I arrived for lunch and got a seat immediately at the bar next to the open kitchen. Service is slow, but I was able to see how diligently the cooking staff worked and how important it was for them to provide quality dishes for their customers. The chef would turn away rice because it didn't meet her standard. The waiting staff were polite, courteous, and checked with me periodically to let me know my food is coming. I had the steamed lobster and scallop dumpling, steamed bbq buns, and Mr. Wongs special fried rice. I got a little irritated waiting for my food, but I was humbled by observing how hard the cooking staff worked. The place was crowded at lunch time and I assume it gets crazier during dinner. My advise is to bring it down a notch, chill, and eat a Snickers if you get hangry. Remember that the food is made to order and it is worth the wait.
