I enjoyed browsing this store on a lazy Saturday afternoon. There was a very large selection of records but not as much in the Country section as I would hope but I still managed to come out of there with a few winners for myself. Prices are good on stuff that others may not know about so if you like various artist be sure and look for some of those less recognizable by the general public. I like that it is relaxed in there and large with lots of space. Go for brunch up the road at the Hi-Lo and then take a little tour of Hymie's. read more

Hymie's is definitely my favorite neighborhood (Longfellow) record shop! It looks small from the outside but this place is PACKED with vinyl gems. Soul, rock, funk, country, ska, alternative, jazz, soundtracks... Hymie's has a super diverse assortment of music. I found an Eartha Kitt compilation, Elvis Perkins' Ash Wednesday, and a dub compilation among many others. Also, they have a huge section of 45s which could take a whole day to explore. The records are also very reasonable priced. I love that Hymie's has places to sit too... nice when you're waiting for your friend to finish picking out their records. Hymie's owner is super friendly, talkative, and helpful too. Overall, I can't wait to revisit Hymie's! read more

Came in from Boston and did a google search for used record stores near me....Hymies's did not disappoint! I would say that this was the most categorized, interesting, just freakin' coolest used record (they sell new too) shop I have ever been to. The owner, David, is very personable and friendly. He also recommended a killer Indian restaurant about 12 blocks North where I had some VERY good saag and onion chutney. David- you made my night, man! Highly recommend Hymies's! read more

All of this just feels right. I have only been to a handful of record shops, but this one takes the cake. I put together a scavenger hunt for my partner's birthday and placed this in the lineup for the day. I wasn't sure what to expect....I love everything vintage....him, not so much but he loves music. We both ended up loving it. The place is so much bigger than it appears. It just keeps going back further and further. There are cool resturant-style booths set up in the middle, and there is a listening station as well. Categories are laid out pretty easily to figure out for all of us record shop newbies. I felt cooler just by being in Hymie's. There were lots of good records and cool artwork up in the shop as well. The lady working was friendly enough but allowed customers to browse around at will. If you like music I would for sure recommend checking it out. read more

I have only been to Hymie's once but I loved my experience there! I love a store like this. Mostly used lps and 45's, good selection that on the day I was there! I was quite impresses that they had so many classic albums that I think every collection should have! I was there pre- all these re releases of stuff, and now most of these lps you can by and any Barnes and Nobles.. But the fact of the matter is, owning a copy from a 1st or 2nd pressing warms my hear just a little bit more then a new shiny piece of wax! This store has those classic and more! I've collected vinyl since a very young age, and have alway's loved this store. Before the internet places like this were not only where to buy records, they were also where to find information. Didn't know who sang a certain song? All you had to do was sing a little of it for Hymie and he'd tell you who it was. He was such a cool guy, really knew his stuff, I learned alot about music in talking with him. Sadly Hymie died about 10 years ago, but thankfully the shop's still there, although it is now in a different location. Even if you're not crazy about listening to music on vinyl, you gotta love the old album covers, truly works of art. You can buy frames for album covers at many art stores, even Target, they look great hanging up, especially on a rec room wall. If all you wan't is a cover then you can browse records that are scratched a bit and are dirt cheap. The prices here aren't that bad on really good shape ones either, and LPs cost alot of money to ship if ordered online. It is so much fun browsing the bins in this store, and music nostalgia is everywhere.The've even got some antique record shop furnishings with label names like Columbia, RCA, and Mercury. I wish they sold that stuff here too, never seen anything like it anywhere else. read more

I feel this record store needs to be visited multiple times to be appreciated fully. I took my first trip to Hymie's today, and walked away with a record I have been looking for in good shape over the last few years: Pink Floyd's "I Wish You Were Here". There it was, in the "Recent Arrivals" bin, and only 8 bucks. Overall I found the prices to be very reasonable. This store is very well organized...you can tell the owner and staff love vinyl, and obscure music. They have a ton of 45s...I mean a ton, maybe even two tons? They have a lot. I will definitely have to go back often....since I bet this place has quite a bit of turnover with the great location, and loyal customer base. I'm a fan. Hymie's looks and feels like a used records store should. Mellow, friendly staff, eclectic decor (love the old turntables displayed throughout), and always something interesting on the sound system. Their selection is skewed heavily toward oldies and "classic rock." If you're looking for anything from the 80s forward (including new releases), you may not find it here. Hymie's also has what is probably the largest selection of used 7" records I have seen anywhere. Everything is well organized, and prices are extremely fair. read more

Large selection to browse, its like an attic full of old albums (hence, can be a little dusty), vintage feel to the whole place, but very NEAT and well organized...I can spend hours there browsing! Prices are pretty cheap. Too bad there wasnt a huge selection for the artists I was browsing for, but hopefully I will have better luck next time. Every time I come here I find something I need to add to my record collection. This is by far my favorite record store I have ever been to. Anytime I'm close to the cities I come here. It's usually a once a month I am there. Such an amazing unique little place. I could spend hours there and never get tired of it. If I have a free day, it's usually spent here. read more

We'd heard Hymie's is legendary and my boyfriend remembered visiting it in the '90s. We found a large, well-ordered store, with lots of selection, creative art and album covers on the walls, and '70s easy chairs that look like they've launched 100,000 sits. We were greeted by an arthritic but sweet Boston terrier (always a bonus) and, later, by another unexpected pet - a mouse that has apparently tried to move in since the neighboring restaurant closed. It freaked me out a little bit, hey, mice need shleltwr too, I guess. Overall, we enjoyed the layout and organization of the place. Giggled a bit over some of their 'special' categories: 'Difficult listening,' educational records (subtitled with something like: 'Do something with your life already!'), adult 'topless' records (which turn out to be all men), etc. They seemed to have a bit of everything, although I was surprised by how shallow the selection was for some artists. (Do I really need every Kim Carnes' record ever made, while I can't find anything but an overpriced 'Best of' record and a bunch of Ric Ocasek under The Cars?) Prices seemed a little high in some areas, especially when we took out the records and saw some vinyl that was not worth the price tag. This is also a good place for local bands; my partner found Flavor Crystals and Chatham Rise here. My biggest complaint, besides the selection not being quite as amazing as legend has it: The lady behind the counter was cold and not helpful. It irks me when hipster places feel like 'cool' equals disinterested and rude. In the end , they are still a business and should at least feign interest in their customers. I don't want to feel like I need to fit some kind of 'cool' standard to shop there. read more

It's a great record store. I consistently find records that are hard to find and reasonably priced.

Large, all-vinyl record store in the Longfellow neighborhood of Minneapolis. While I'm not quite as over-the-top enthusiastic as some people are about this shop, I am still a fan. Hymie's has a large selection of used vinyl records, including lots of 45s. The stock includes a variety of genres -- rock, R&B, country, jazz, soundtracks, etc. -- up to about the 1980s. Everything is priced reasonably, and the customer service is always outstanding. If you're an oldies fan, you'll probably like the selection here. That's the niche that Hymie's serves in the Twin Cities -- older music, including some 1950s and 1960s rock and R&B albums, on vinyl. I haven't been overly impressed by the level of stock turnover when I've made multiple visits to Hymie's within a few weeks, but I've only done that a few times, so it's hard to draw conclusions from that small a sample size. Overall, it's very nice to have a large all-vinyl shop like Hymie's around that has many records you can't find elsewhere in the Twin Cities. read more

The fun of delving into vinyl on a rainy day was deeply marred after the sales were complete. My companion waited for me to bring the car around so the albums we'd purchased would not get wet. While he waited for me to return with the car in the entry way where the door had been left open the whole time we were in the store he observed the store's dog walking toward the street through this open door. The man in the store started an argument with my friend about the dog and physically shoved my friend out through the door into the heavy down pour. The man in the store blamed my friend for the dog walking through the open door which had been open the entire time we were browsing. Seems the store worker was having a very bad day to assault a customer. I don't know if this was the owner or an employee but either way it was incredibly inappropriate. One surly star! read more

I love the colour of this building. They have tons of records, a helpful staff with a wish list, tons of band's flyers so you're always updated, and sometimes they have shows here. Oh yeah and they have those little books to put your 45s in and sometimes they have writing from the original owner so you can peek into the real musical life of a teenager in the 50s. read more

If you're coming from out of town and have one place to stop for records this is it. Ridiculously low prices on a huge assortment of all genres. If you're looking for a sweet deal on older music stop here before you go to any of the other record shops. Wall-to-wall vinyl. Any record enthusiast would be in bliss upon walking into Hymie's. The selection is widespread and the prices are very reasonable--on average $2-$3 for a LP. Listening stations are great to check the quality bad content of the records. Cute coffee shop is attached in case you need a boost or your stomach starts growling in the hours you could get lost perusing all the records. Two thumbs up. read more

When I close my eyes and imagine what a record shop should look like, that mental image is Hymies. The shop has a great selection of well-curated vinyl (and 45s) that are reasonably priced. Poking through the records is a great way to spend a few hours. You'll probably find something great to spin. I moved to Minneapolis from Chicago about a year ago and haven't found a vinyl record store I've really liked yet. I thought that I would try Hymie's seeing as how it is fairly close to my house. When I walked in the door, I felt a little overwhelmed (but in a good sense) in regards to the size of the shop. I didn't know where to start, there is a huge selection of vinyl to browse. Everything is organized in a way that makes sense to anybody coming in off the street and the prices aren't ridiculous. The gentleman working there was very pleasant and told me about future events at the store later in the month. There are also couches and chairs equipped with turntables and headphones to give records a listen. The atmosphere of the store is also pleasant and comfortable. There isn't any sort holier than thou music snobbery vibe either. I would recommend Hymie's Vintage Records to anyone! read more

My favorite record store in the Twin Cities. Good stock, no junk. Lots of stuff you won't find at other record stores. Everything is priced at the lower end of what it should be. Their monthly/bi-monthly sales featuring cheap LPs (usually around $.50) and 45s (around $.10) are a nice way to roll the dice on some records you otherwise wouldn't and find new music. read more

I can easily spend hours browsing and listening at Hymie's. Some of the sections are good for a laugh.. Difficult Listening, Awkward Christian Music, The Movie Was So Bad But the Soundtrack Was So Good, etc. It's connected to the Blue moon coffee shop. read more
