Kids pizza, tenders and summer sides
    Sarah E.

Went after the fair at 11:30, restaurant was empty except for 2 tables. Walking in the door the building smells old and damp almost like a dirt floor cellar which was immediately off putting. Dining room was sticky and dark. There is a full bar, pop/hip hop music was a bit loud and out of place for the time of day. Kids meals were cheap. I tried the three summer side salads and they were okay, broccoli salad was good, the potato salad was thick and super mustard-y, pasta salad was meh. The staff were attentive and friendly but seemed inexperienced. Prices were fair even though for almost $40 after a tip for lunch it sort of felt like I had wasted my money afterwards. The sweet tea was decent but very sweet. There was a large covered outdoor seating area and I think we should have sat out there. I'd definitely recommend running a dehumidifier in there.

    Apple pie

Food was just disappointing. The southern bbq "nachos" barely had any meat. Less than a cup of meat. It took nearly an hour to get our food yet only one or two other tables had people at them. The food was overpriced for the actual quality. I took a picture of the apple pie. Just straight up pig slop.

    Cheesesteak

This place was unbelievable! The food was delicious, our server (April) was the sweetest, and the service was SO QUICK! I'm not kidding when I say this is the best cheesesteak I've had in years!

Food has usually been good. However this time got to go order and was ripped off. They charge $16 for chicken salad platter that barely had chicken salad and crab dip that had way more chips than dip for $10. Definitely not worth it. Called to talk to owner who was very rude and disrespectful. Will not be going back.

    Grilled cheese!?

The food was savory...tasty...and the cocktails are worth the wait. Small town flavor!

Diner food, very well prepared. Nice covered patio. Good beer selection, a few craft beers, including Hazy Little Thing on tap.

The North Star is a clean Virginia roadside diner offering delicious food. My neighbor and I were visiting Buchanan to have his John Deere mower serviced, and we asked the salespeople where we could get a good lunch. The staff unanimously recommended the North Star, but we were cautioned not to order the double-cheeseburger unless we were very hungry. They were right. It is rare to get a burger prepared exactly the way I prefer one (cheese, ketchup, and loaded with grilled onions), and the North Star didn't disappoint. My friend ordered the double-cheeseburger and loved his meal as well. The fries were really good, and reminiscent of New York diner fries. My wife and I have been back more than a few times when we are in the mood for an excellent burger.

The menu is basically burgers and fries and nachos and hot dogs and ice cream. All things delicious to be sure, but not my normal fare. This past weekend however, I was in Buchanan to spend some time with my dad during a weekend trip home and we decided to poke our heads in and have a "snack". We ordered the loaded nachos, carnival fries, and a small side salad for me. The loaded nachos were actually really good - they have ground beef, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos and nacho cheese on them. They were warm and fresh and crispy. My dad devoured them. The carnival fries were amazeballs. I mean, they're the Buchanan carnival fries - need I say more?! Served with a spray bottle for vinegar on the side - YUM. Perfection. The little side salad was fresh and good - sparse - but with really good fresh lettuce, peppers, tomato and onion with crunchy fresh croutons and a choice of dressing. The prices are reasonable - $3-5 for everything and our waitress was adorable and super attentive and friendly. I still didn't get to try a shake here - but maybe one day. Plenty of on-street parking and the inside is decorated like a cute old soda shop complete with the soda fountain bar and a working juke box.

I also got The Yardbird sandwich after the server recommended it. It's basically just chicken salad and lettuce between a ciabatta roll, but it was simple and great. And what the heck: I can't visit a bakery that has multiple sweets without getting one. I also listened to the advice of the server when she recommended the orange scone. She was right again! It was tender and tasted like a Froot Loop. Blue Sky is located on the corner of a busy street. There are lots of tables, but if you can, sit at the bar that looks out onto the street to see the hustling and bustling college town.

Sometimes, when college students leave great reviews, that means good food that isn't too expensive. True here, especially for what you get: generous servings on amazing bakery breads. I had the "Sorry Charlie" on a slice of focaccia -- topped with tomato slices and melted cheese and a satisfyingly crunchy, warm crust, with a simple but nicely refreshing black bean and corn salad. Dessert treats are also worth a splurge. The people couldn't be friendlier with customers of all ages enjoying themselves. (And they have a coffee bar. And a "speakeasy"!)

I was already not in the mood for anymore drinking after spending a weekend in a major tournament in Lynchburg. Anyways, for a Saturday evening, this place was pretty packed both inside and outside. They just do them all very slowly or at least they did when I was there. We came here on a Monday evening, and it was somewhat busy but there were visible empty tables and a couple spots at the bar. We went to the bar and waited awhile before the bartender asked what we wanted. I didn't ask for a flight because he seemed too busy. Whatever I wanted they were out of, but I ended up with an Imperial 16-point IPA which was quite tasty. I also got some chicken nachos, but I had to go stand in line to order them. They were adequate but not worth the wait. The place was very disorganized. They had workers always standing by the hostess desk, but the bartender was overwhelmed. Seemed like they should have had more than one, after all it is a brewery. Would have loved to try more beer but we just left and went back into Lexington for another round at another place. I don't know maybe it was just a bad night.

My dining companions ordered different things off of the menu and let me take bites: spring rolls (yum, especially with the sauce), empanada (my favorite), falafel (great) and soup (I didn't taste). They also offer vegan desserts, which I was tempted to try but was stuffed from my healthy lunch. The restaurant itself is very small with not a lot of seating. I'd say maybe eight people can sit down inside, but there are some tables out on the sidewalk for outdoor seating.
