Mrs. Ken is lovely but Maya's behavior and unprofessionalism is deplorable. I had an appointment scheduled for Sunday and the place was all locked up. I called multiple times to see what was up with the phone ringing and then completely going to voicemail indicating she closed her phone. Maya did not inform Mrs. Ken of any possible circumstances that may have arisen to postpone my appointment. Moreover, I had to call Mrs. Ken to find out what was happening since Maya refused to call me back or send me a message. It was through Mrs. Ken that I found out that Maya: 1. She already spoke to me; 2. Already did my service; 3. Had confirmed all my information; and 4. Was being professional. If I had already done my service, why would I be there and waste over 30 minutes waiting for a response? It speaks volumes on Maya's professionalism that she deemed a client unworthy of the simple courtesy of corresponding with them and then lie to her employer. Emergencies happen and had I been informed I would completely understand but the fact that lying and making a client be left in the dark is incredibly disgusting behavior that is not appropriate. The upseting part is the fact that if someone can lie like that to their clients and employer, who can speak on the quality of the services offered? Perhaps I dodged a nail infection and I won't thankfully ever know. Mrs. Ken is very kind and nice. I felt bad interrupting her weekend due to this. Maya is the best nail tech I've ever known and I have been around the country. I have extremely difficult nails that split badly. The quality organic products she uses are the only product I have ever found that actually last longer than 5 days. I tried every kind of polish including gel dip. This product is the best out there and Maya is very skilled in applying it. My manicures last 2 weeks at least, I can make it 3 weeks if I'm out of town. read more

Went here on a Saturday afternoon. I was a little confused about which door to enter through (it's the green one). Mrs. Ken is in the back of the salon and the ladies will direct you to her if you ask. She's absolutely amazing and really sweet. I came in with bushy misshapen eyebrows since I've been dragging my feet on finding a new place since I moved from the city. I've found my home though and at half the cost! I was skeptical at first but she really is that great. Just make sure you schedule an appointment ahead of time. She's just one person doing all the waxing which makes her schedule pretty tight. I'm writing this review a couple months after getting a bikini wax here. I'd been trying to go somewhere else but they'd cancelled or postponed my reservation 4 consecutive times so I finally made one here instead after seeing all the great reviews. I spoke to Mrs. Ken on the phone and she was very professional and welcoming. On the day of my appointment however she was nowhere to be seen and someone else actually did the wax. I'm new to waxing, but the previous times have been very professional, clean, and sterile. This person put on old, used rubber gloves that had holes in them, used the same sticks repeatedly, and broke off more hairs than she pulled out. She also kept trying to convince me to get something I didn't want, and used clippers (that still had hair in them) to trim down all my hair to stubble - which proceeded to get all over me and the chair. Overall, it was a very unpleasant and uncomfortable experience - certainly one of the more painful waxes I've had, and also just a bad wax. Most of the hairs grew back in like they'd been shaved (because they were broken) and there wasn't great coverage to begin with. The whole thing kind of felt like a bootleg operation as well because it's in the basement of a nail salon with a completelt different vibe and they only take cash. It cost me about the same as the best wax I'd ever had, so it really wasn't worth the money or the experience. read more

You know that rare place on Yelp that has ALL 5-star reviews, and you wonder if it could possibly be that great? When Yelp filters out 30 of the 5-star reviews, it's hard not to get suspicious, since it's known for having trolls who write one great review about a place, where they may or may not work, or whose owner may or may not be their BFF. But let me tell you, 5-star businesses exist, and that's what Mrs. Ken's is. On the eternal hunt for great waxing in the 'burbs (you would not BELIEVE how hard this hunt has been), I came across this Yelp page. By great, I mean safe, effective, close by, relatively inexpensive (this is a biggie in the Main Line/suburbs in general!) and with great customer service. On a recent Saturday, I called in the morning to see if Mrs. Ken could possibly fit me in, and she did. 10 Things to Know about Mrs. Ken's Wax & Nail: 1. She is located in A Cut Above in Bryn Mawr, but you can call her directly at the number listed above. 2. When you go in, let the receptionist know you're there for Mrs. Ken, and she'll direct you to the back of the salon, where you'll wait in a chair until she's done with her previous client. 3. She is basically the sweetest lady ever, but she knows her stuff and takes her job very seriously. Waxing and nails are all she does. She will talk to you the whole time about everything. She's funny and super sweet, so this is not a bad thing. 4. You'll undress while she's in the room, but she turns her back while she's getting all the stuff ready. Undressing is obviously not necessary if you're getting your brows done. =P 5. She may start out by talking about how much you're going to like getting the wax done by her and how her clients are very loyal. Don't let this sway you--she's not doing it to be pushy or braggy. She just wants you to know how seriously she takes her job and the quality that she delivers. 6. She will get every hair off your body (that you request, of course), so... 7. Be prepared to block off time for her to do this. An hour, at minimum. This is not an in-and-out service, so don't expect it to be quick. See notes on quality. It is, however, mostly painless. 8. She has a sliding scale of payment, depending on just how hairy you are. Others have cited prices for specific services, so I won't go into that. It's cash-only, but there's a Wells Fargo ATM right behind the parking lot in case you forget. I found out about Mrs. Ken's waxing through one of my good friends, Grace and let's just say she's the one who took my bikini and Brazilian waxing "virginity" away. The first time I went to see Mrs. Ken, I got the bikini wax. Surprisingly, it was not painful at all (granted, I took 2 Tylenol 30 minutes before)! She used the European strip-less hard wax and the whole experience was just a breeze. Because of her professionalism, I literally got rid of my shyness and worries within 5 minutes. The waxing job was so painless that I decided to come back and get a Brazilian for my next appointment. Now, if I said the Brazilian was painless, I would definitely be lying. It did hurt, but the pain was not excruciating (maybe because I only took 1 Tylenol this time?). I believe this it because Mrs. Ken knew what she was doing and with years of experience, she was able to minimized the pain. Also, she made sure that I was relaxed and continued to maintain a conversation with me throughout the process. Everything was over in about 35 - 45 minutes and I was very satisfied with the results! Went to Mrs. Ken last night for the first time, and I can honestly say I'll never get waxed anywhere else for as long as I live in the Philadelphia area. She uses a hard wax that is much less painful than the soft wax other places use, plus it pulls out the hair and root completely and doesn't leave a sticky residue. I couldn't believe how quick and effective it was! She was very thorough, and very sweet. Mrs. Ken has been an aesthetician for longer than I have been alive and her pride in her work really shows. The next day I have no redness or tenderness like I've had from other places, and I can tell that the results are going to last a long time. This place is worth a 30 minute plus drive, especially considering how reasonable her prices are. Far less than I've paid for waxing at nice places in Center City, and hands down the best I've ever had. Now I can see why her customers are so loyal. It doesn't get any better. Mrs. Ken is the QUEEN of hair removal. I first decided to give her a chance (for a bikini wax) after reading all of the fabulous reviews in her honor, and I'm sure glad I did. I do not spend a single second of my 45-minute appointments feeling uncomfortable or anxious in any way. She plays soothing music and chats with you as much as possible to keep you distracted from the pain, which is very minimal to begin with. She is quite funny and very sweet, and she reads body language like a champ. The hard wax she uses is very effective. After a few sessions, you'll find that the hair comes back much more slowly and is much softer than what you normally experience with shaving. It is not at all painful, except for one or two highly sensitive moments. As long as I'm living in this area, there is no one I'd dream of seeing for my hair removal needs! She is a miracle-worker. So, I must have obsessed over where to get my first Brazilian wax for about a year before I decided on Mrs. Ken. It was really important to me that I find someone experienced who also would be sensitive to my (dis)comfort level. My standards were also super high because I was getting waxed before my honeymoon. I was pretty shy about the "intimate nature" of the procedure, but Mrs. Ken put me at ease immediately. She is gentle and funny, quick and efficient. Also, she put on some nice relaxing music, which helped take my mind off of things. She told me everything that she was going to do and just had a great bedside manner in general. Mrs. Ken has been doing this for a long time. I completely forgot to be nervous. Since it was my first time, I did a lot of research beforehand. Mrs. Ken uses good hard wax (the blue stuff) so my skin stayed smooth far beyond my honeymoon. I have been back twice more for high-cut bikini waxes and have had consistently good results. Her location is not the most luxurious, but I would rather pay a fair price for a job well done than pay an inflated Main Line price for ambiance (and possibly attitude).
