I am not a resident here and am writing my review from the perspective of a visitor. I have dear friends who live here and I must say how lovely it is to visit the community. The grounds are well kept and everyone from the landscapers, the cleaners, to the medical personnel walking to and from are always so pleasant. They, as well as other residents, always seem to take a moment and give a friendly hello. From what I hear, the services provided by the Gardens fit the desires of our friends who reside here. Another wonderful plus is that the Gardens is a pet friendly community! It is certainly one of the friendliest, loveliest, all-inclusive retirement communities I have visited and they truly deserve their top ratings. read more

It was wonderful! Utopian in some ways, depending on what you are seeking. Mostly well educated inhabitants who oversee the day to day operations by commitee are friendly, well informed and inclusive. Surroundings lush because of exotic gardens and meeting places under enormous trees but climate is hotter than I would have liked. Poor air quality the day I visited due to thick smog. I've lived here for a year, and I'm very happy I chose the MSAG community. After the death of my spouse two years ago, I was a bit lost about what to do next, and where to do it. Medicare Fraud Concerns Raise Red Flags at Mt. San Antonio Gardens A friend's family member was at this facility. Recent findings suggest Mt. San Antonio Gardens may be engaged in systematic Medicare fraud through its skilled nursing care program. The allegations center on a senior administrator whose billing practices could violate the Medicare False Claims Act. The situation is deeply problematic: residents at The Gardens have already paid for skilled nursing care as part of their contracts. Yet evidence shows the facility might be collecting payments twice--once from residents and again from Medicare. The alleged scheme exploits Medicare's three-day hospital stay requirement. Before Medicare covers skilled nursing care, patients must complete three days of medically necessary hospital care. Staff members reportedly orchestrate artificial delays in bed availability, forcing patients to stay in hospitals longer than necessary. Once patients meet the three-day requirement, the facility bills Medicare for up to 100 days of care--care that residents have already funded. These practices reportedly date back to 2019. While administrators claim ignorance and unintentional oversight, the systematic nature of these actions suggests otherwise. The Board of Directors must now choose between two paths: Self-report the violations immediately, potentially reducing penalties and demonstrating good faith or risk severe financial consequences when--not if--a False Claims Civil Lawsuit emerges. I've been a resident since earlier this year. This is an amazing place with engaged, friendly residents. I'm very happy with the staff, dining, services and activities. Contrary to another review, most residents are in independent living, not assisted living. The grounds are gorgeous and well maintained. This is an extraordinary community. I have lived here eight years and have not regretted my decision to come here. It is a community of engaged, interesting and people committed to enhanced living and respectiful of individual life styles. Moreover, residents are so involved in the governance of this non-profit single site community (including on its Board), that there is great involvement and transparenccy in decision making. The Life Care Contract(TYpe A), increasingly rare also means that one does not need to worry about increased costs with higher elevls of care...a comfort to ourselves and our families. As a watch friends who have waited too long and because of health are no longer eligible, try to manage care at home or be caregivers, I know that one cannot wait until "ready." read more

We have lived in an independent living cottage at Mount San Antonio Gardens for 20 months. We moved there so that any level of care we need for the rest of our lives will be provided. The Gardens is the only continuing care/lifecare community in the area with a five star rating by Medicare. This is the highest possible rating for quality of care. All of the pressure is taken off of our children to care for us or find us care. Our cottage is situated in 32 acres of beautiful grounds. There is a state of the art wellness center with a great gym and exercise rooms. The best part of the Gardens is the other residents. The residents come from a variety of backgrounds, and skills, which they apply toward running the 63 committees of the Gardens club. All activities are organized by the residents, from the 50 member chorale to the library and the diversity and excursions committees. If you choose to you can have stimulating conversations during the 3 meals a day served in the dining hall, or you can pick up food and bring it home to the quiet of your residence. Do you want to speak Spanish or German at lunch? There are groups that do that on a regular basis. My husband says "you can't afford not to live here" due to the tax advantage of the portion of your fees that are considered a prepaid medical expense. Moving to MSAG is the best decision we ever made, after deciding to marry each other! read more

I visited Mount San Antonio Gardens at the end of December and could not be more disappointed and, frankly, offended by the lack of professionalism of the admission representative, Joanna. I waited for over a month to write this review because I wanted to be calm and rational instead of reactionary. I called several times and left messages to schedule an appointment to visit which she did not return. I was in the area so decided to stop by to get some information about the facility. I was first greeted by one of the residential care coordinators who was friendly and asked questions. When Joanna showed up the first thing she asked about was my grandmother's insurance. When I told her she had both Medicare and Medi-Cal, Joanna basically checked out of the conversation. Because the facility is not a Medi-Cal facility she told me that they were not a good option for my grandmother. She didn't ask any questions about the level of care of my grandmother would need or wait for me to explain why I sought out this particular option due to my grandmother's financial situation. She largely remained quiet while I pushed ahead to try to advocate for my grandmother and myself. Then kept saying over and over while shaking her head, "it's not going to work. We're not a good facility for her." That may be true and I respect that, but there wasn't an effort to try to understand what we are looking for. She also didn't try to offer any suggestions when I would explain why the situation was difficult. I had to probe and ask her if she had any suggestions for me moving forward and she did have one after thinking about it for awhile. I'm not sure if she's just new and that was the problem or if she was just busy. Either way I felt very dismissed and it mostly felt that she didn't want to take the time to engage. I also don't know if she's ever had to place a relative in an assisted living facility. It's incredibly overwhelming for anyone involved and families are searching for some compassion and advice. Families understand that not all options are going to work for every family but the staff don't have to cast anyone aside. I left the location in tears. Everyone else I interacted with was great but Mt San Antonio Gardens should understand that your first point of contact should be the most welcoming. read more

I have dealt with the staff nurses and residents of Mount San Antonio Gardens since 2006. In my humble opinion they are a top-notch organization and want only the very best for the residence. There is no doubt in my mind this is a place I would want my mother father or grandparents to stay and live the latter years of their lives. read more

Mt. San Antonio Gardens has some great people working there, but only about a third. When I got the tour years ago, the administrative people seemed sincerely nice, and the grounds were really pretty. The Independent residents were really interesting and friendly, and I was sold! It was a lot of fun when I was healthy, but now, as my health has declined and I am more dependent on workers to take care of me, I am starting to figure it out why a lot of them don't seem to care about helping me. When you move in, they take a big chunk of money from you, and when you die, they get to move someone else in and get that big fee--so not much incentive for them to keep you alive. A couple of the nurses intimidate me, probably because I asked for one thing too many, so I just hope that the next day I will have a nice one. I have asked for the doctor's phone number when I had burning (bladder), but she wouldn't give me his number and said she wouldn't be able to reach him because it was a weekend. It got so bad I had to go to the hospital, where they said the infection had made me "sepsis" (sp?) I got IV's and eventually got over it and went back. The doctor supposedly comes once a month, without notice, and if I am not in my room, too bad--I have to hope I can see him next month. When I have asked administrative people for something, a lot of the time I don't hear back, so I have to remember (if I can!) to ask again. There is a quarantine again this year (is it November or December?) and they often go for weeks at a time and then happen again later. Although they have signs on the buildings to stay out, they let sick employees come in and cough all over you. How can these quarantines ever end? My kids have called the outside government agencies and Ombudsman, but they don't call my kids back for days and say they have to write a complaint on the computer. They never did much to help anyway. When there is a quarantine, they cancel all the activities and close the dining rooms and bring you a box lunch in your room. Christmas dinner is always festive and they go all out, and for New Years Eve, they have live music and dancing. But, this year they have extended the quarantine past Christmas. I bet they get to save a lot of money this way. My family will stay away, as requested by the sign on my building, so I will just stay in my room and watch TV with my box lunch. Oh, by the way, I am not sick and I see only one or two rooms with a closed door (sick resident). As I said, it's mostly the employees. If I had it to do all over again, I would have got my kids involved in deciding on a senior place to live. In my next life I will move into a fun place for just independent living, and which does not take a huge fee from you to move in, or maybe a place where you buy your unit instead of the big fee and nothing to show for it. Then, I would either hire private help to stay in my unit or home, or have my kids look for an assisted living place that has an excellent rating, and one that also does not ask for a lot of money up front. Maybe I should move even though I paid all that money to be here. Maybe I will ask the nurse to ask the doctor for a better anti-depressant. I hope they don't figure me out, but if I can help someone out there, it was worth it. read more
