WOW WOW WOW! I'm a…read morephotographer and I shoot a lot of weddings. At the end of the evening when we are on our way out we always grab a piece of cake for the ride home. We do this for two reasons 1) If the cake is good I add the baker to my references and pass on their names to future clients and 2) It's wedding cake, who in their right mind passes up wedding cake??? I eat a lot of wedding cake, k? Just for the record, I'm not a cake expert, this is based on my opinion and the very limited knowledge I do have. The second I saw this cake I was in love. It was the most gorgeous cake I've seen yet in my line of work. 6 round tiers, starting with sky blue icing and lightening to white as it went up, with gerbera daisies strategically placed around the layers that added a splash of color. The white filigree piping was immaculate in my opinion and fit the theme of the wedding decor nicely. The cake was balancing beautifully without any leaning or slumping which can happen easily with that many tiers. It looked strong. The smell coming off the cake was incredible. I think it might be what heaven smells like. We had the pleasure of speaking with the father of the bride about the cake. What first blew me away was that his wife, the mother of the bride, made the cake. And if I'm not mistake, A Piece of Cake, Winfield, KS, is indeed her business. Then he told us that each layer was a different flavor. I can't remember them all but I believe there was chocolate, strawberry, banana & caramel & one with a raspberry filling. Then later it was time to cut the cake, and once the cake service gals started taking the layers off and began cutting up the servings, the smell was even more heavenly!!! And the cake came down ever so gracefully. Usually the cake just falls apart when they start taking it down and cutting it up, but this one stayed strong in the individual layers and the servings were just as beautiful as the cake was as a whole. Now for taste. We had the chocolate. Best. Tasting. Wedding Cake. EVER. And I regret we didn't have the opportunity to sample each flavor. We did speak to someone who helps make the cake and she gave us some insight to their process. It's not my place to give away their trade secrets, however I will tell you that they mean business when it comes to the taste. It was moist and actually more dense than cake usually is, which I actually prefer. It wasn't just boring old chocolate either, it had a smooth creamy-ness to it and I know I got a chocolate chip or two in some bites. It was like a multiple personality chocolate cake. Just off the charts!!! I'm not a huge fan of frosting but this frosting was mild yet tasty, not overly frosting-y in the way that makes you kinda gag when you've had to much, you know what I mean? Each bite was good and I didn't get frosting overload. The cake was the focus and the frosting was just a compliment to the cake, which is how it should be. I think they are a smaller business and I wasn't able to find a website for them but if you are in the southeast part of KS or the northern part of OK and want an amazing wedding cake try to get a hold of A Piece Of Cake in Winfield! I personally would use them if I had the need and they are close to 4 hours away from me. It would be worth the trip. I had the pleasure of working for this family as I was their wedding photographer and they are some of the most wonderful & personable people I've had the pleasure of meeting in my line of work.

Once for a cake tasting and initial looking through of pictures. The second time, she sat and listened to me as I told her what I liked (or didn't like!) about certain cakes, and then made my cake more beautiful than I could have hoped for. And of course, it tasted amazing! Her prices were fair and reasonable. We had such a good experience that I am suggesting her to my sister, who is getting married in the next year. I'm secretly hoping that she will pick A Piece of Cake.

But, if you're looking for the undertones of buzzing energy, an artsy/independent vibe, a place where people pause to literally and figuratively drink-it-all-in, this could be a good fit. If you're into snug coffee houses with live music nights, this might be it. I used to visit more often. I was a big fan of their cookies, soups, side salads and iced tea. When I was there more recently, all the foods/drinks were still there and still as I remembered them, but apparently the vibe shifted a little during Covid and the requisite remodel has remained. Now it feels a bit snugger, a little more hectic, a little less convenient to know where to be to wait for your food. The bakery cooler/display is no longer in front showing the foods of the day and the menu has never been very clear on its own (with so many options), it's a bit anxiety provoking just to find options and select a meal. I don't see the display of teas that I used to entertain myself or the open waiting area where I used to wait. And the staff I knew have since moved on and the new staff treat me like (what I am to them) a lost and confused stranger. Personally, I vibed with the old staff a little better and I liked the former lay-out better, but those are all personal preferences. This community hub is still buzzing, it's just somehow I'm now a bit out of place...like going back to high school or college, looking for a connection and it's not quite there. And, yet, I still encourage you to stop by. If a vegan/gluten free person is looking for a place to eat, I still have them check the College Hill Coffee and Oasis Coffee Shop menus first. If someone is looking for a cozy, snug, college/community hub, I still direct them to CHC. When young people are new to the area and looking to meet other young people in the area, I still point them to CHC. If a new artist/musician (of any age) is trying to meet like minded people, I still suggest CHC as a place to start. If someone wants a cookie, hands down CHC is the place to go. CHC is like a busy YouTube coffee shop but with real people/food and without the obligatory cat. If you're looking for something less commercial than Starbucks and more energized than the calm plants and tones of Oasis Coffee Shop, this independent coffee nook within easy walking distance of Southwestern College might be exactly what you're looking for.
