After traveling for 13 hours, we stumbled into this place while looking for a place to kill time until our hotel rooms were ready. Tucked inside a tunnel it doesn't look like much from the outside but ended up being just what we needed. Maybe they could see how visibly jet lagged we were, but from the moment we walked in the door everyone was extra nice and helpful. We started off with a couple beers which come in this metal tankards which I thought was kind of cool. For food I ordered the bangers and mash and my friend got some kind of chicken special. This pub is absolutely amazing! I booked a table here because of the convenient location, never having been here before I wasn't sure what to expect. The pub entrance is hidden right under the bridge and is much larger than I had anticipated. It has a gorgeous, traditional atmosphere with wooden decor and stone plate flooring. The staff were super friendly and accommodating, the food was simply stunning. Very well presented and great quality. Especially their salted caramel panna cotta with pistachio brittle was absolutely amazing. Definitely coming back to this one, and absolutely recommend a visit. Do book a table if you want to guarantee a space, though. read more

Came here initially trying to find somewhere close to London Bridge station which was not a restaurant but a casual eatery to meet for lunch. Since then, I've primarily been back in the evening initially due to its location but there are now other things I like about the Mug House. The Mug House is slightly off the beaten track of the usual London Bridge / Borough fair and, as the other review mentioned, you can be distracted by the London Experience and also the bigger Pub just ahead with the outdoor seating. This pub has a really nice cozy atmosphere, in both parts of the establishment. The waiting staff are friendly and attentive in the bar and in the restaurant happy to try and accommodate your wishes. I've eaten in both parts. The Pub part is, well a pub, there is no table service and has bar snack type food which hits the spot when you start to get the munchies after a few drinks. On a normal night (i.e not Christmas time), it usually remains fairly civil with the ability to have a conversation and a chat to your colleagues. The bar area where you order is small and can get a little 'cluttered' with people but it's OK given the other benefits of the establishment. The restaurant side is table service with a more 'dining' menu however, not fancying that much food on one occasion, they were OK with us ordering from the bar menu. Although we didn't have the 'big' meal, we were not rushed off our table even though it was 'peek' time (Christmas period) and I am sure there were many customers who would have happily taken our seats and spent more. It was a genuine surprise to have entered a pub that seems to contain so much history to it. It was full of quirks and kept to its original old decor with it's wine barrels as small drink tables and concrete floor. Old furniture shoved untidily into exposed shelving on the walls that it became part of the norm and it's decor. On the website it says it has the feel of a Dickens' novel. At the back was the more formal dining area with more larger tables, all made of solid old rustic looking wood, walnut colour with a old wine bottle as a candlelight holder. There was only one staff working in the dining area. At first approach he seemed cold and unwelcoming when we asked him about our reservation. Without saying much he just pointed forward and use hand gestures to indicate to us to follow him. But over the course of the meal he warmed up and became pleasant in his service, smiley and attentive. From him we ordered the following: Wild mushrooms on toast with walnut pesto A lovely array of textures alternating from the bouncy mushrooms, creamy nutty pesto to the crunchy airy toast. Although simple it was delicious, delivering very adequate earthy flavours. Plate of smoked salmon with sweet and sour shallots. Perfectly cured salmon, fresh and full of flavour. The pickled shallot not only uplifted the flavour but added a nice crunchy texture to the dish along with the shaved radishes. Very nice balanced flavours. Duck confit with white beans and chorizo Very surprised at the quality of cooking of a dish that usually takes time and attention to detail to produce a duck that is moist and not overcooked. But for a chain pub it did very well. The duck was cooked till the skin lost all its fat and crisped on top yet still remains to be juicy and tender. Seasoning was perfect even in the lovely fresh tomato chorizo white beans stew which was light in its soft textures. The chopped chorizo added a lovely burst of flavour and a little more bite without being interruptive. Sausages and mash This is the typical expectation of pub food. Quite disappointed seeing how much potential the kitchen has from the previous dishes. The mash was bland, lacked creaminess and although the sausages were plumb and juicy it would have benefited with a bit more herbs. The onion gravy was nice and flavoursome though Triple cooked chips These came chunky, almost like wedges. They were incredibly fluffy, crisp and seasoned well. Very moreish! Sticky toffee pudding This was lovely and moist, so airy and springy too. Not as heavy as some which was great for such a filling main. Served with a choice of clotted cream, custard or ice cream. We chose the latter for that lovely hot and cold balance. Delicious. Treacle tart Sadly this was quite dry even with the lovely sticky treacle as the pastry wasn't buttery enough and was quite dry and dense. Overall I was very impressed at the standard of food of a Davy's pub, a company owning several pubs across London. Mug House definitely delivers well in terms of food and atmosphere especially if you are looking for a traditional pub for food. It's quite hidden, just before London Bridge itself following the stairs on the left and opposite the London Dungeon entrance itself. On an afternoon it was pretty quiet but with one staff working I'm kind of glad because service could have been a lot slower. read more

It's tucked away in an underpass and has a great selection of wine. The bartender was super knowledgeable so it was fun chatting to him. It has a bit of a rough and tumble atmosphere which I liked for a wine bar. The food was fairly average. We ate here out of laziness but it's probably better to just come for drinks and then go somewhere else for nicer food. read more

This is a lovely tucked away wine bar, part of the Davy's chain. An extensive wine list and bar snacks are available (olives, nuts, crisps etc). The bar is quite large and underground with lots of nooks and crannies to drink away in. Quite musty and old Londonish. Nice for after work drinks and tourists (if they can find it). read more

Hidden away under London Bridge is this cave of a wine bar. So close to work, so close to my heart. Although I haven't thoroughly perused their wine list, I notice that there are only a few choices available (usually what's in season). There is a select menu with some meal deals, i.e. 3 courses for 18 pounds or so...which rocks my world, you know you did. I've had the burgers here, along with their smoked salmon, and their starter platters of breads/crackers/dips/cheeses. All were up to par, but not phenomenal. The area inside is quite small, but it's a perfect place to chill out after a long day busting your balls for the proverbial man. Have a good vent with your colleagues at the Mug House and hit up a club afterwards (ditch the colleagues). read more

A good meal, a good meal, my kingdom for a good meal! Fortunately, I don't have to give away my kingdom...errr studio flat... for a good meal, I simply have to walk down to London Bridge and go to the Mug House. Tucked into an arch of London Bridge on the cobblestone walkway that is Tooley Street, the Mug House is one of those places where if you blink, you will miss it - particularly if you are distracted by the strange oddity that is the London Bridge Experience, with painted faced actors and all that is right across the street. The first thing that struck me upon entering the establishment, apart from the truly unique, cozy atmosphere, was the friendliness and attentiveness of the staff. The Mug House prides itself on its wine selection, and the staff was more than enthusiastic when describing the wines and which one would go with which meal. I left this to the girlfriend though, as I was too distracted by their surprisingly good beer selection - including three different Meantimes. I opted for the open faced goats cheese and aubergine sandwich - which I imagine is what angels taste like. I actually went back just a few days later and ordered it again. The Mug House is a great place for an intimate date meal, or simply a relaxed lunch with a friend in a quiet little hideaway free from all the crowds and distractions that the South Bank has to offer. The Mug House loses a star for two reasons, one of which is basically beyond their control: I find it to be about £2 more expensive than it should be, and I dislike the fact that when looking out the door, all one can see is the strange crowd that lines up for the London Bridge Experience. Even on a Friday night, this pub was pretty chill - we found a seat and were able to talk in normal voices! Maybe it's a reflection of this pub's general popularity but I think it probably has more to do with the fact it's opposite the Mudlark and is a bit hidden. I like it best out of the pubs in the area because of its more relaxed atmosphere but it is on the expensive side, I think a coke and pint of lager came to £6.50. read more

This pub is worth coming to, just to drink your ale out of a tankard. This is a real novelty these days. Unfortunately the Old Wallop (cough courage directors cough) is not the best ale, so I would only come here as a novelty. They only have 1 lager too, which is alright. This is a fair place to come for an after work drink in the area mind you. It doesn't get as busy as some of the other local pubs. I think a lot of people don't notice it as they walk under the bridge, due to the noise from the London Bridge experience, on the other side. You could have trouble finding friends in here, due to the nooks, crannies and lack of mobile phone reception. read more

So far the best fish in chips I've had in London (out of 3 other places). The fish still had the skin and a few bones (I appreciated it more, felt authentic). We had some good drinks and excellent service. You receive 25% off of your bill if you attend the London bridge experience next door, which was a nice bonus as it was included in our London Pass. Good pub food isn't easy to get right. Sometimes you just want a decent burger, a plate of fish n' chips, or something else typically British, but it would appear that pretty much every pub can cater to you if that's all you're looking for. Where do you go if you want a quick, cheap bite to eat that's actually nice? While I'm on the subject, let's get something cleared up: there's nothing wrong with British food. We may get slated internationally for our bad food, but this is just a very tiresome stereotype. Sure, there are a whole slew of pubs serving up frozen pies that don't exactly help our cause, but if you're a tourist willing to dig a little deeper than the shiny Angus Steakhouse exterior then you can find some real treats. The modern face of British cuisine is fresh and seasonal, and it tastes good. On that note, we are brought to The Mughouse, situated in (or rather under) London Bridge. It's part of a chain owned by Davy's, the wine bar, but they're the first of the chain to make the change to "Gastropub": they've brought in a new chef (Chris Bish), extended their beer range, and are focussing on serving good quality food with a home-cooked feel. To start we had the crab cakes with sweet chilli sauce, and the ham hock terrine. The crab cakes were good. Perhaps over-potatoed a little bit, but overall they were exactly as described. If you went to a pub and ordered Thai fish cakes, and these came out, you would not be disappointed. As for the ham hock terrine - well, as you can see, it is big - almost too big for a starter, but I find that this is almost never an actual complaint. It comes with a dollop of piccalilli relish and a slice of toasted bread. It's big, and tastes exactly like a ham hock terrine should taste. It was good. The burger (my main) was frickin' amazing. Apparently it was forged from fillet off-cuts from the Queen's butcher in the cracks of Mount Doom. I don't know about all of that, but it tasted damn good - definitely one of the better burgers that I've had in recent times, and I'm not shy about ordering burgers (I have an ongoing personal quest to find the perfect burger). I tried some of Nuhar's pie and it was everything that a pub pie should be, and then some. Freshly-made that day mince filling? Check. Crumbly, buttery and intensely satisfying crust? Check. My only regret is that we were both too full to finish it in its entirety. I even left a few chips. We don't have much of a sweet tooth, so we ended things with cheese - more specifically, three different types of cheese with crackers. It was good. There's a board explaining what cheeses they have in. Take heed of it and order appropriately. Sorry for the photo of half-eaten cheeses, we got a bit over-excited when they arrived and forgot to photograph first. You're definitely going to want some wine, it being a wine bar and all. Let me suggest that you skip the house red and instead go straight to the E S Malbec Finca Sophenia 2009 - only an extra £10, but tastes so infinitely better that you can't put a price on it. Apart from £25. So yeah, that was some good pub food. For that selection of food, sans wine, you're looking at a shade over £40 - which I think represents good value for money.
