Not a very "Brooklyn" experience, but it is a good "Ale House." They have many interesting beers on tap, which my friend promptly took advantage of by getting a Creme brulee ale and a heavy (almost undrinkable) Imperial stout. For those who are less ambitious, they had a beer special menu. Their budget options were a bottle of Session Lager and a hoppy and very drinkable pint for $3. Pints for $3 aren't easy to come by, so this was a great catch. The German beer steins on the wall, wrapping around the bar were a good decor choice. The first few Smashing Pumpkins they played were nostalgic, but after 5-6 songs in a row, it got a bit excessive. Someone sure loved their Corgan that night. read more

I wandered into this bar because they had TV's showing a basketball game my friend wanted to watch. I liked the neighborhood feel of the place and the bar menu was relatively big. We ordered a large bottle of Chimay red label and I purused the immense beer and scotch list. Very impressive! Unfortunately, the service was really slow and I had to ask for everything before it would appear on the table. Like... share plates, another round of drinks, the bill.... The server just didn't seem very attentive. I dunno. Maybe she was super busy. They have an ostrich burger on the menu that's pretty good and the burger that comes with BBQ sauce, american cheese, mushrooms and grilled onion was pretty good. The potato skin appetizer could use some work though. There wasn't enough sour cream and besides cheese, sprinkling of bacon and something that looked like a tomato salsa, there really wasn't anything on the potato skins that would make them stand out. Even the presentation was mediocre. Though I wouldn't run back to this place, I'd go back if I knew I had a beer lover friend who wanted to go out for a pint. read more

I'm gonna break this review up into two parts: Bar: If you're going to Mugs for a drink on a warm summer day, then you can't go wrong. The backyard deck usually has a couple seats open, and their selection of brews is pretty good. The food there is pretty standard pub grub and is very reasonably priced. 4 stars. Restaurant: I'm kind of disappointed with Mugs every time I've ordered anything more than just chips. Not once, but TWICE in the last two months, I've got to the bartender, ordered a burger for takeout, sat at the bar patiently for my meal, and both times I waited over a half hour for my food. Both times when I asked whether my food was ready, the bartenders said something to the effect of "oh yeah, it's been ready for a while" and went to the register and pulled my takeout bag out. Seriously? Twice this has happened. I wait a half hour for a burger when the bartender knows I'm sitting there waiting for it in an empty bar? That's just bad service. 1 star. So if I even those out, it's 2.5 stars, but I'll be nice and round up. But remember if you ever order out from them, ask your server or bartender if your food is ready every 3 minutes, otherwise, you might not get it at all. read more

I guess it's a sports bar, but nobody there was really paying attention to the TVs. Great bar on the north side. I've been there a couple times and it's always busy but never packed. We usually grab a table in the back away from the bar. The service is great and the staff is helpful with a pretty big beer list. It's also one of the earliest bars to open in the area (as far as I know), which is a +1 in my book. Sure, it's not too classy to be doing shots of tequila at 11am, but sometimes you just have to meet friends somewhere to prepare for the day (in my case, Idiotarod). read more

This is a classic bar with great brew options. It's completely low key without being a "dive" bar. On my visits, the bartender has always been knowledgeable and helpful when it came to selecting a beer. The selection is very good: approximately 30 micro beers on tap, plus some bottle options as well -- it was unclear how many bottles were available. The front room is rather small (bar seating for 8? and table seating for around 12), but the back room opens up. And they have a pinball machine, which pretty fun. I didn't eat here though, but I'd give some food a shot here... maybe a burger? Good food would really make this a prime spot. Even just for a beer, I would absolutely go back. Overall impression: this is a very good place to go for a beer -- or a place to hang out with friends and take down a bunch of beers -- and with food available I don't think there's much of a downside to coming here any night (/day) of the week. read more

Just had dinner there, man, kaiser rolls for burgers? really? the pickle was slimy and tasteless, not to mention it was pretty thin, probably an 1/8th wedge, oh and the skin was pretty damn tough. Had williamsburger, man, where were the caramelized onion and mushroom? And because of the kaiser roll the burger was so dry it was just edible with enough ketchup to soften it up. ginger ale was flat, so was the tapped stella. how much is a pint of stella now days? it was 5 dollars! Stopped in here with my friends on our exploratory tour. We'd walked all over & ended up in Williamsburg- tired & hungry we needed foods and beers- this place happily provided. Good beer selection, esp if you're into craft beer- but nothing jumped off the beer list that screamed CHEAP. Food was good. Not cheap, but you got what you paid for. Been here a few times with friends. Both times I've had the same experience. Excellent beer selection; the menu has one page for food and the following 10 pages are beer bottles. The beers on tap are all pretty good, and the prices aren't totally outrageous. Service here is a bit slow, especially with food. The first time I went the food took an hour to come out, with a group of 8 or so. The other times the food came out quicker, but still we waited a good while for food that is so quick to prepare. As for the quality of the food, not as good as some other bars/pubs I've been to. The fries are good and the nachos are yummy, but when I order cheese fries and nachos I want cheese, a lot of cheese, not a single slice of melted cheddar. Don't be stingy with the fat! The shepherds pie was not that good to me and the fried shrimp on the po' boy was mushy and just bland. Mugs can be great - excellent beer selection that is cheap and frequently changes - good food (also surprisingly cheap) - nice vibe. Unfortunately, as Mugs grows in popularity, it has become insanely crowded on weekend nights and the staff are often unable to keep up with the crowds - wait times for food can be insane, with waitresses often forgetting about you several times during a meal. Went here last night with a friend and was very pleased with the beer selection and menu. You can get a burger and fries for a mere $6.50, which is a hard to beat price. The only reason I can't give the place one more star is because of the terrible bartender (Drew). We were sitting at the bar, right in front of him, yet he made absolutely no effort at all to take our initial order or keep our glasses full after the first round. I don't want to sound a little hyperbolic or anything, but this is my favorite bar in the world. 30 taps that rotate, big fresh Imperial Pints, dark wooden walls that glow with the reflection of the polished brass rails... You can never have just one at Mugs. The bartenders are not only friendly and knowledgeable on the topic of beer, they never mind letting you taste something if you have a hankering. The food isn't sensational, but it's pretty darn good for softening those heavy pints. Go during the day. It's not crowded, just the world's nicest regulars, Turner Classic Movies playing in the corner, and folks reading their newspapers and books. This is a good spot to find rare beers and chow down on burgers and fries. The food is good and well priced. The bar maids dont know much about beer but they are friendly and get your order right. I am a beer guy so the place is definetly a great beer spot,but during the early summer days they dont want to put on the A/C and it gets Muggy at Mugs. The flys are a problem, especially when you see them chillin on your burger. All in all, if you can swat a fly and wait until the July for cool air this place is worth it. I don't think there is anywhere else in the 5 boroughs that serves such quality suds in an imperial (20 oz.) pint for $6. Food is standard pub fare that is reasonably priced. Specials changed daily. What I like best is the laid back vibe and lack of hipster attitude that infects so many bars in the neighborhood. I think their bartenders do a fine job of staying informed of the large choice of beers. Waitstaff is friendly and efficient. The regular beer festivals are a blast. I sure hope that's a typo or that you get 5 big soft pretzels bc otherwise WOWZA! That's an expensive pretzel! In any case, the beer list was good and the bartender was very helpful in determining what we all wanted based on what we tended to like. We tried a few and settled on some delicious choices. It's a solid pub. Big, nice open windows when the weather is fine, space for groups, tv's for the big game and a good sized bar to belly up to! Very reasonably priced food and a great beer selection. The food was pretty generic bar food but while the spinach quesadillas were surprisingly flavorful, the potato skins weren't worth it. All burgers come with a heap of fries which make them a deal. The beers are what will jack up your tab. Bottled beer menu covers PAGES in the menu while the beers on tap are posted on chalk boards on the wall and rotate with some frequency. If you're tired with the normal 6 beers on tap in the area, try this bar! Our service wasn't as bad as other yelpers have complained about (I would argue our waitress was slightly too attentive) but it was early (7-9pm) on a Saturday. She was nice enough and kept coming over to check if we needed anything else. read more

Honestly this is a 4 and a half star bar... but seeing as it's one of the only spots in Williamsburg with a couple TVs and being a sports fan without cable TV I love a bar with some ESPN (College basketball: Big Monday). The fact that they have a bunch of good microbrew on tap (most are 6 dollars for a 20 ounce "imperial" pint) doesn't hurt either. Burgers (6.50-8 bucks with fries included) are an absolute steal. It's a bar, so foodwise the nachos and wings are also pretty solid suggestions. Rasta Rye is a solid beer I'd recommend that is usually on tap. A rotating cask beer selection is a solid addition to this beercentric bar. Finally, the fact they have a pinball machine on top of all this is why I'd say it's a great bar, even though some people fault it's lack of ambiance... *I feel a need to address some issues some have bought up with speed of service, simply put I've never had any issues with it. Growing up in the beer wasteland that was early Bensonhurst/ Bay ridge was a challange back in the day. I stumbled upon this beer Mecca a long time ago by accident and have never deserted it. Besides the best selection of serious micros around. This place is like a beer university. There is a certain, Aura that no other bar possesses. It is usually the perfect blend of young and old. Burgers in the 'Berg (Williamsburg): The Place: OK...the beer's at this place are second to none...that's a given! They have a HUGE assortment of all kinds of beer's (micro's, domestic, foreign, wheat, stouts, lagers, you name it...) However, the burger was extremely LAME! The atmosphere is fun for a large group of friends, and the jukebox is pretty awesome. All night Rush, The Clash, The Police, and Cheap Trick and many other greaties from the 80's were playing. The Burger/Service: What can I say...we waited over 1 hour for our food. Which I didnt mind because I had two 20oz beer's in front me. But this is a warning for anyone who is going there just to eat....don't do it! Our waitress was very nice and kept up with our drink orders. The burger was shitty. I ordered the "Williamsburger" - Medium Rare, Chedder Cheese, Caramelized Onions, Sauteed Mushrooms and (YUM) Bar-B-Q Sauce. However, the sauce was thin, runny and tasteless. In addition, the burger meat was dry and looked like the kind of meat you'd get from a high school cafeteria. One of the only sports bars that I ever drink at. Yeah, I pretty much despise sports bars, but Mugs is one of the few exceptions. The reason is their unwavering commitment to supporting microbreweries and handcrafted beer. Mugs is at the forefront of the microbrewery movement and definitely one of the good guys. I've been on the search for a new local spot and I'm so glad I've found it. Just happened upon Mugs while I was passing by and decided to stop in. Chatted with Andrew the bartender about a daft I may like and he nailed the recommendation, which is pretty great considering there are over 40 on tap at any given time (Upper Pass Move On Up, Milk Stout). The burger was delicious and cooked to the exact doneness as requested and the fries transported me to my dad's kitchen when he'd make me fresh cut french fries. Great atmosphere, surprising prices considering the location, and 10/10 food. A 5 star rating is well-deserved. read more

Just moved to the hood from the west coast and Mugs was one of the first places I hit up for the beer. Came here last night and love the atmosphere. Although the place was pretty dead, I got to chatting with one of the waitresses, Lauren, and got some inside on all the beers they had on draft, as well as some local surf spots!! After giving me the run down on te beer fest drafts they had up (which were super strong in abv) she got me hooked on the Bear Republic Double Rocket. And go figure I'm from Cali so it was nice to have a taste of home. all in all prices are very reasonable probably the cheapest in the area, service was very friendly, and the bartender looks like Mick Jagger!
