We stopped by Muji spontaneously while walking around nearby. I was excited to see a location in PDX and was eager to browse around. I will say the store layout was a bit interesting, with some areas that felt more cramped. It was fairly crowded when we went, so I did have to squeeze by people to make my way through the store. I spent some time browsing the clothing section and found several items that caught my eye. The clearance section was a bit disorganized and the sizes were not labeled clearly unfortunately. Customer service at Muji was friendly and adequate. The staff working in the fitting room area were especially helpful. It would've been great to have more fitting rooms available, as the line moved slowly and took up a good chunk of time. You are also limited to bringing in 5 items at a time but you can swap out items as needed. I ended up purchasing multiple tops and a few pants for everyday wear. Unfortunately, I didn't get a chance to browse the homewares section but was pretty satisfied with my clothing purchases and shopping experience. Was excited to see a MUJI store, as there isn't one that's local near me. This store is pretty large in that it has clothing, stationary, home goods, food, and even a little cafe inside. They have some really nice looking pieces from athliesure to work, I wish I had more time to try things on - but the line was long for the fitting room. The quality of the clothes looks to be on the higher end as well, with a lot of signature type styling. My purchase was rung up quickly and the cashier was also very nice & friendly! This was our first visit to Muji, and we were impressed by the clean layout and well-made products. Unfortunately, our experience exchanging an item was less positive. We returned the next morning (11/25) with a stained item for a straightforward even exchange, but the cashier insisted on charging the full price even though we originally used a discount given to us by following them on social media. After some unnecessary back-and-forth, he eventually agreed to process it as an even exchange. Muji tends to have higher quality products than a lot of similar stores. The design of their products is also better. Everyone who works there is always helpful and nice. I've purchased a lot of cotton t-shirts, sock, etc there and they've all lasted a long time. They also have attractive dressier clothes. MUJI is a Japanese clothing and home goods chain. The store in Downtown Portland is the only location on the West Coast, as the company closed all of the Californian stores during the COVID pandemic. Having visited MUJI stores in Asia, I would say the selection in Portland is not as extensive. The clothing and home goods selection is comparable, but it is very noticeable that the food selection pales in comparison and is priced a lot higher. The store does have a unique offering as it has a robot barista in store making automated drinks. Judging the product offerings, I will say that the clothing is of good quality and sold at affordable price points. If you like UNIQLO, MUJI is a nice alternative that you might like as well. It is also a good place to peruse if you like clothing with no logos. In addition to clothing, I like their pure essential oils though they are pricey. As for food items, they carry a selection of products from Kuze Fuku which is a Japanese specialty food brand that manufactures their products in Oregon that are worth trying. Although the selection is not as extensive as their Asian stores, I do think the Portland MUJI is worth visiting as they have some unique offerings to make up for it. read more

In the writing utensils section, there were so many different types of writing utensils and you could even test them out. I also liked the selection of snacks. I tried one of the packaged cakes and it was moist and tasty. I love Muji and was happy to find that there's a store right here in Portland. They have a good variety of clothing and home goods here and even a robot barista. I would call this a medium size store compared to the ones I have been to in Japan. I love the quality of clothing here and the price reflects it. It's not cheap but the quality of the clothing does justify the higher pricing. My daughter loves the clothes here as well, we buy all her lounging and "home clothes" from here. She loves their skincare and they have the cutest section for pens and stationary. I wish there was a cafe here, but there is only a tiny one for coffee and tea. There is no parking, we usually find metered parking on the street and there are parking garages nearby. A lot of times the smaller sizes are sold out, but you can usually find what you are looking for online if you can't find it in the store. read more

The interior cap broke and leaked oil all over the clothes in my bag. The Manager would not let me exchange it for a new one even after I proved it was defective. I just came back from Japan and was so excited to have one local. But unfortunately when I went to check it out, I was underwhelmed. The store gave too much of a Portland feel. The clothing section had no rhyme or reason unlike the stores in Japan. They had weird music playing. The store smelled like a vintage Portland store not clean and fresh. The other sections were better organized and had a lot of similar products. I'm not sure if it's by choice or they don't have access to more beauty products. But the beauty section was tiny and had nothing special. I was looking for more lip glosses and body lotions. I was annoyed that they had local soaps over muji products. Where I live, in Vancouver, BC, there are MUJI stores, so I was fairly familiar with this store just upon entering it. The store layout and merchandise is all quite familiar to me (although I admit, this store is larger than most MUJI stores I'm used to). The clothing and items are well made, of quality materials, and the layout of the store is quite organized. The store pallettes and finishes are all of a sparser Japanese aesthetic, and I admit, I'm quite attracted to this type of clean, unadorned look. Neither my daughter nor I needed anything, really. We weren't here to buy anything. My daughter brought me here to see Jarvis. Who is Jarvis, you ask? (Well, I certainly asked!). Jarvis is a robotic barista. When my kid told me this, I thought she was pulling me leg (as she is known to do. I'm quite gullible). But no, there really IS a robotic barista here, making coffees - some rather complicated, too! - and it is a sight to behold. My kid used to be a barista when we lived in Seattle, and even she admitted, Jarvis makes a helluva good cup o' Joe. Everything at this coffee station is automated. You place your order in a laptop-like monitor, you can watch Jarvis do his thing, there's never any spillage, all ratios of all drinks are spot-on perfect, and you can see the progress of your drink's completion by way of an illuminated circle on the bar top with your name in lights beneath it. Since then their offerings have grown but they have maintained their rigorous attention to quality goods at good prices. I love having a MUJI store in Portland! Every time I come to this store I always end up buying something whether it's clothes, snacks, home goods or stationary. The 0.38 pens are my favorite pens for home and work and they come in so many different colors. The customer service is usually not very good, but everything is fairly priced in this store and I'll continue to shop here! It's in downtown Portland so you'll need to find street parking or use a parking garage if coming by car. I stumbled upon MUJI when Google Maps suggested Artly as I was searching for a coffee shop near Pioneer Courthouse Square. Intrigued by the robot, I decided to give it a try. The menu offers an expansive selection of espresso and tea beverages, including classics like the cappuccino and more unique offerings like the rose latte. I placed my order of a matcha latte with oat milk on the tablet, and my order was added to the queue with two customers ahead of me. I ended up waiting about ten minutes for my beverage since the robot ran out of milk (and required human intervention), but I wasn't in a rush and spent the time browsing the rest of the store. When it was ready, my matcha latte tasted like it was prepared by an expert barista - it was smooth, creamy, and subtly sweet. While I'm not sure if this is the future of coffee shops, I definitely enjoyed the experience. read more

During my visit, I needed two items that were essential to my lodging. MUJI has a very welcoming store front. Filled with stylish decorations fit for the holiday or season. The prices can fluctuate on cheap to why-is-this-so-expensive really quickly depending on what you are here to for. Luckily the items I were looking for fell under the cheap umbrella and I was able to find one for them on sale. The other item I was looking for was a bit more difficult so I had asked a staff member for assistance. They were very friendly and helped me search for this item but they did not appear to have stock. The good news is I left without spending more than needed on exactly what I wanted. This one star review is for Francisco, the customer sales representative who checked us out. After noticing we were overcharged by 15% on one item purchased once we saw the receipt, we went back and showed him and he said "Well if you want to get the money back you'll have to line up again." That was his first response. Not I'm sorry. Not "Oh that's not right. Let me fix it." Instead it was immediately defensive. When I asked why I would need to line up again, he said it was because it wasn't "his fault. It just rang up that way." Sales Customer Representative 101: when you're an employee and you scan an item and it overcharges the customer, yes. It is your fault on behalf of the store. Francisco was then insistent on me lining up again, and so I did. Not wanting to cause a scene. When it came to my turn again I got Francisco as a rep again (karma sucks sometimes doesn't it?). He immediately looked at me, rolled his eyes, then said "I can't help you. You'll have to wait for a manager." I asked him what was the point of lining up again? A manager could've helped out previously. Finally Devon a sales manager came to the rescue and was professional and kind. He immediately checked out receipt to confirm the error and said what Francisco NEVER said. Which is "Oh I'm sorry about that." And quickly processed the refund. I don't want to get this person fired. But he definitely needs a few training sessions in how to handle issues and problems that arise in customer service. Francisco was unprofessional, dismissive and never once seemed to realize that he's representing a fantastic company. Next time, do better please when you overcharge a customer. When the tag says one price and the computer rings it up as a higher price, that's a system / product representation error and should be rectified as quickly and smoothly as possible. read more

Stayed away for as long as I could because I knew I'd have no will power. I was right! This store speaks to me! Living in a condo with little storage, the design of their bath, closet, kitchen items is ideal. Simple, streamlined and stylish. Upon entering, you are immediately immersed in their Zen environment with wooden beams, white industrial ceiling, neutral colors of cream, gray, navy surrounding you. To the left is the office area where you are encouraged to try out the pens and stamps; journals and writing tablets everywhere, even hanging from the ceiling. I bought a narrow gray case to keep my iPad and Samsung cords and chargers; for $5 it makes my life so much easier. The closet area contains cloth and wire baskets of all sizes, hangers, hooks and more. They were having a sale on their cleaning system which consists of a pole that extends with different attachments - a squeegee, mop, scrub brush, swifter type sponge - and you could buy any three for $10. That was the first item to go in my basket! Genius. The bath and bed area had lotions, soaps and cleansers all in neutral colors, bed linens and towels, and items I didn't think I needed until I saw them! They had a small, tiny single toothbrush holder. Took up only the space required to balance the toothbrush. That in a nutshell is MUJI. I passed on that item because I don't like anything on my bath vanity, choosing for sanitary reasons to keep my toothbrush in the drawer, but I still thought it was genius. They had a small section of Japanese treats and since I'm a marshmallow junkie, I had to buy a bag of tiny marshmallows. They had strawberry and chocolate flavors, even though they are white, but I stuck with vanilla. They have some of Japanese milk breaks, chocolate covered Cheetos (which I was too afraid to try) and a variety of crackers. Plus a coffee and tea bar. The clothing is very neutral, monochromatic, boxy and gender neutral. Mens, women's, kids, it all looked the same. The manager told me they recently changed the sizing to match US rather than the presumed smaller Japanese sizes. But since the clothing is so boxy, you can easily size down. Tried in a long denim jacket and I was swimming in the a Small. They do alterations on site; $5 to hem. Make sure to check out the travel accessory wall for neck snuggies, cord holders, bags of every size, travel size lotion bottles and cases - all in navy, black or cream. Oh, and they even have a room filled with houseplants that adds to that Zen feel. Customer service was great. One of the items I wanted was not available so he sold me the floor sample and gave me a discount without me asking or even wanting. Just wish there was parking by the store since downtown is sometimes a bit seedy to walk through. And I live there! MUJI is located in the Meyer and Frank building on SW 5th which doesn't allow street parking. I was there on a Sunday so it was easy to get a spot 2 blocks away, but during the week it would be challenging. Haven't shopped in a store like this since I was in a Japan, and also when I am in Hawaii. MUJI is a great addition to Portland and based on the crowd that was there late in a Sunday, I think they are here to stay. read more

The first time I went to Muji was the day they opened . I was walking past during my lunch hour and saw a really long line around the block (pre-Covid), curiosity got the better of me and I went in. The space is very warm and welcoming and I love the muted color palette of the store . I love that their philosophy revolves around minimalism , recycling, reducing production and packaging waste .Apart from the plethora of household items ,clothes, beauty products, bedding ,stationary they also do alterations , embroidery and have a cute coffee spot , a section of plants and some selected treats and snacks . Prices are all over the place ,some are very reasonable priced some expensive . I love the whole process of looking through things and experiencing the different textures and smells at this store . The staff is professional and not overbearing at all . Parking is a challenge and I would highly recommend parking at one of the Smart parks and just walking over . read more

What I found was candidly a lot of gender neutral, boxy outfits that I don't know whether they'd look good on anyone. Perhaps this is in style, but I expected to find a few things I could wear for a trip to NYC and upcoming job interviews and I didn't find anything. They sell clothes/shoes (both men and women), stationery, small trinkets, travel bags, skincare, essential oil diffusers, housewares, and even snacks/drinks. They also had a coffee-making robot, which you can order from! Personally, I am a big fan of their stationary. They have 0.38mm pens, which I didn't know I needed in my life. :) Prices are pretty reasonable for the most part. There is a small fitting room for those who need it, but no bathroom in the store. The staff are professional and check out was easy. The music and scent of the store were also not offensive, in my opinion.
