i cannot recommend this business enough. i traveled from Kansas to portland with my golden pothos and saw my leaves drooping and dying. i was stressed but happy to know i lived right around the corner from hammer and vine. i took my plant in to get the help it needs and i learned so much. the service was impeccable. she walked me through everything while caring for my plant. replaced my soil, cleared the dead leaves, gave me fertilizer, and the best advice. she even helped me propagate for the first time! i'm very new to owning plants so i appreciate her knowledge and kindness. i ended up buying a small vase for $6 to propagate and a cute ceramic mushroom piece for my pot. overall i spent $13 on physical items yet gained everything else for free. such a good deal! i will be back to purchase and support! read more

Excellent selection of succulents, air plants, tropical plants. The also sell gorgeous blown glass vessels that they make, yes, it's true! And ceramic pots and other types of vases as well. These type of plants are so on trend and instantly give your house a modern touch. I particularly love the hanging vessels with the air plants, with an odd number hanging from a simple horizontal bar. Remember, even though they are "airl plants" they do need water! The staff is very educated so ask how best to care for your plants. They have a booth at the Portland Saturday Market in the old section between SW 2nd & Ankeny, now called Ankeny Market Place. Got myself and a friend a mounted Moose Horn Fern (similar to Staghorn Ferns) from H&V as a housewarming gift and I'm so happy with my selection. The staff here are just so friendly and knowledgeable about plant care. This little shop is easy to miss from the street with just a little awning to mark its existence but it's such a hidden gem. There's plenty of street parking and a small hidden parking lot that I discovered later but will remember next time I visit. My daughter's birthday is around Christmas. The day before her birthday, she started to feel ill and so canceled her plans to celebrate and to travel to be with family for the holidays. She and we were bummed! The night before her birthday I ordered a plant from Hammer + Vine. I texted H+V the next day explaining my daughter's situation and to see if the plant could be delivered that day. They promptly texted me back, saying they were not planning on delivering to her neighborhood, but would try. And they succeeded!!! My daughter was thrilled! I am an outdoor plant person but I do try to do an indoor plant or two...I am up to six now. I have cats, very low light and I over or under water. I will manage to keep a plant alive for a long time and then it just dies. I try to be good though and I appreciate buying something healthy to give me a head start so I am less likely to commit planticide. This store makes you want to plant everything. The selection is perfect - not overwhelming or underwhelming - that perfect amount to inspire you and give you options. I could not resist a tiny pot and a succulent and I appreciated her offer to plant it for me - even better since then I leave with zero waste and she can reuse the little planter. She also has great knowledge and is very easy going...sometimes people who are super smart in what they do seem unapproachable but she is super nice and wants to help you which I appreciate to become less murderous with my interior planting attempts. read more

Looking to spice up your home with some beautiful plants? Look no further. Hammer + Vine created a wonderful experience for my boyfriend and I. We came in hoping to grab some succulents or cactuses for his apartment and, after reading a lot of reviews, decided to come here. It has a great location - super quaint and VERY green. The blonde woman who was working was extremely kind and insightful, she helped my boyfriend and I figure out which glass we should plant our cactuses in and allowed us to build our own tiny garden. Everyone was so kind and inviting and I will definitely be coming back. The prices were really great, as well, and seemed very fair. They have small succulents or cactuses 3 for $10 or medium/large sized for $6-10 each. Also, the frogs!! Such a sweet touch! I enjoyed my first-time visit and found an awesome pot and moss pole for my monstera. I like that they source locally made merchandise because Portland is full of talented artists, and their selection really reflects this. I also bought two great plants for half off, couldn't be happier. I will say, I'm not likely to buy any moist-soil plants from this location because I saw fungus gnats flying around. I'm terrified of those things now that I've suffered through an infestation once, and the plants that come in from this store that are tropical or otherwise non-succulent need to be isolated before integrating with the rest of the houseplants. I found this plant shop on Google and follow them on Instagram. I messaged with them on Instagram to find the right ZZ plant for my dad's birthday. They were so nice and sent me pictures of options and then I ordered it online. Since my dad lives locally they delivered it to him and handwrote the note I'd typed out to accompany it (which I thought was extra nice!) I was extremely disappointed with this store. Not with the selection, but with the customer service and lack of interest in their community. I bought a staghorn fern here, a week later I went to put new moss in and there was bacteria infecting the roots. I asked for advice, they said to send in pictures and bring the plant in. I did, and they never got back to me. When I brought the plant in, after trying to save it, they basically wished me best of luck. I spent $60 on an already failed plant, and they didn't care at all or offer me my money back, or even store credit. SHAME ON YOU HAMMER AND VINE. With the plethora of plant shops in Portland. I highly recommend you look elsewhere. read more

Can I just live in this store forever!? Hammer + Vine is tucked away but oh my word what a hidden gem it is. There's a little something here for everyone from hanging vines, succulents, air plants, terrariums, and huge leafy varieties as well! I had been on the search for a monstera and everywhere I went the prices would be steep for the size of the plant, or they only had one monstera in the entire store for over $60. Hammer + Vine on the other hand had several monstera and each was only $30! While I wish I could've purchased everything because 3 for $10 succulents and 3 for $20 large tillandsia air plants are suuuuper tempting, I left very content with my monstera and an aloe plant! I've ordered plants from them several times now, and I haven't been disappointed. I have been to the brick and mortar store, but their online shop is so easy to use. Their local delivery is quicker than I expected, and so careful. The plants are excellent and healthy, their prices are very good, and the handwritten thank yous on the purchase are so thoughtful. Occasionally I'll be a little disappointed when a plant I love is out of stock, but that's to be expected with such a lovely small business. read more

I've been adding plants to my house the last couple weeks after owning it for a year now. With COVID19 going on, I searched for some local nurseries to support. I came across Hammer + Vine and have ordered three times from them in the last couple weeks for both plants and planters. Everything is super nice and cute and their customer service is awesome. Jennifer assisted me with my last order notifying me the planters I bought were too big for the plants I had ordered. She sent me a video and picture of the planters they had in stock, which would work for the plants I purchased, leaving me a refund. On top of that, she is planting the plants in the planters before having them delivered. Can't wait for COVID19 to leave, so I can go check out the store! read more

Great little boutique! Offers individual plants for sale as well as potted and decorated with other cute trinkets. They also have terrariums for sale. They also sell air plant fertilizer and materials for constructing your own terrarium if you want to put it together yourself. I picked up a few medium air plants and a succulent to fly back to NJ with me. I used the $5 off coupon from yelp! Very satisfied with my little babies. I wish I was able to pick up one of the larger ones but they were a bit too expensive for me $25-$40 dollars depending on size. Overall all though I loved my purchase and experience there! read more

I got a coupon to get a free plant from the home and garden show. Before this i have never heard of this place.There was a larger selection of plants than I thought there was going to be for being such a small place. The staff was really nice and helpful. They even had small things like shells, dried starfish, and rocks/minerals. Oh, and the amazingly cute pottery. A little expensive for some small things, but can't blame them it's a small business. This little store is small but they manage to pack a lot into it- I find myself spending a lot of time looking around each time I step in. They even have little frogs living underneath the register- so cute! . There are so many different types of plants and little gifts, I have to stop myself from buying it all. The last time I stopped by, I ended up getting cool looking carnivorous plant.
