Words cannot describe how wonderful and whimsy this place is! Just walking in the front door is like a wonderland of happy colors, textures and great design. I'm so glad my husband was with me or else I would have gone overboard. The selection of goods was incredible, you could find just about everything there. The staff were friendly and kind. I was even able to find some neat tiny dice to give my coworkers for only 5 cents a piece. I had to take a picture of my cute aesthetic haul! What a unique, delightful, intresting and cool place. I never made it to their NW location. In talking to the staff today they have existed for a long time. This place has several diffrent vender booths selling, new & used furniture, clothing, kitchenware, decor, old doors, international items, skin care, antiques, and so many unique items. Easy to find street parking. You could spend an hour or 2 or 3 at this place looking at the amazing things they have on 2 floors. Make sure to check out all the nooks & crannies. Staff are nice and fun! I found the prices a bit high on some things and other things more reasonable It was pretty busy with all of people shopping. So a little tight to move around at times. I do wish the cashier/check out area was more well defined. People did not know where to go to get in line in the order the staff were doing it. So mabye some signs. This is my favorite store in Portland. I bring all of my out-of-town guests here. There's so much variety, but everything has the same basic characteristic: cool factor. The store curators share their finds from around the world and provide a place for local artisans to sell their wares. It's an experience just to browse the creative merchandising and super fun to hunt for little things to bring home. The back right corner (from the entry) is a delightful treat. The back left corner has an incredible book collection. Downstairs almost feels like you're in a warehouse for an enchanting movie set. I love it! read more

Cargo started in 1996, but moved to this location in 2014. It is a historic warehouse with old growth beams/flooring and a really cool old elevator. Their first floor is the "Emporium "which means they have other vendors, including clothing, jewelry, ceramics, cards, plants, fabrics/textiles, home decor, and more. In the basement seems to be their import furniture. This was my favorite section, as they had some really cool larger pieces. They import items from Guatemala, Vietnam, the Philippines, Japan, India, Mali, "and beyond." It's a fun place to shop! I stopped in to help celebrate a new addition to the store called "Mercado Lula" who stocks Mexican goods by Mexican makers for home and kitchen. They got glassware, ingredients, cook books, etc. Check them out next time ya round. There's street parking and parking lots nearby avail. Cargo has been my go-to for gifts for many years. The selection of imports, though often priced pretty high compared to what the artisans were likely paid, has always been good. That being said, the last few times I've been in I have seen obvious sweatshop merchandise that is readily available on Alibaba being marked up at a ridiculous level. Selling plastic charms/beads for $3 a piece that you can get in bulk for 5 cents was morally iffy for me, but the selection was still good, so I kept it moving and continued to shop there. However, yesterday I went in and immediately noticed that they were selling a blatant knockoff of the iconic Tokidoki x Lesportsac collection from 2006. Again, I guess maybe there's nothing super wrong about that, but I noticed that they sharpied over the "made in China" on the tags of all of them... That feels pretty dishonest even if I ignore the fact that the item is a poorly produced knockoff of an artist collaboration. When I saw a bunch of jackets made of really low-quality material with a tag that looked exactly like the ones you find on low-cost overseas fast fashion websites, I did a quick google search and immediately saw that the jackets cost $17.50 on Alibaba and are being sold at Cargo for $138... I get that you have to make money, but portraying yourself as a business that sells curated imports and supports artisans is kind of wild if you're also going to price gouge on mass-produced polyester fast fashion from China. If you have a lot of money to spend and few hangups about ethical sourcing, this shop still has a good selection, but I will no longer be recommending this store to friends. read more

This is a great place to shop for so many things. It is a hodge-podge of artisan goods, imports, vintage pieces and much more. It's the kind of place where you should go browse with no preconceptions and just go with your impulses! The prices are good and the interesting asian items in the lower level are fun to look through. Not all are authentic antiques though so pay attention to the feel of the patina-chunky means newly made-velvety means genuine vintage! We went home with some beautiful 'corny' napkins, a variety of Japanese paper products, a beautiful peace dove incense holder, some rainbow pencils and more. I still regret not buying the marigold garlands for Day of the Dead! We will visit again especially for the fun ride in the entry way! read more

What a cool place to browse around! I had seen this listed in a things to do in Portland article. The store is packed (like seriously wall to wall) with interesting, diverse, and colorful items from around the world. Housewares, clothing, jewelry, kids toys, books, fabric, furniture, ornaments, art and things to make art. The list could go on. While we were there a class was being held to create decorative boxes. We were told there is a calendar for upcoming events. There were plenty of staff to help you find what you might be looking for or to answer questions. Prices could seem high depending on what you are buying but we saw a whole rack of vintage kimonos for under $50 that were a great value. We ended up buying a few things for the grandkids and a couple ornaments for our tree. Definitely a fun place to stop by if you want to do a bit of shopping for some unique stuff! read more

Just a warning--The basement has a very large memorial that is reminiscent of day of the dead. It was a hard thing to walk into after holiday shopping upstairs. I've lived in Indonesia and was happy to see some things from there such as traditional puppets, fabrics, masks, etc and also Japan. Great Knick knacks to buy and things to browse. This store will make you go "wow", simply because there were so much to look at! It reminds me of more organic and hippie-ish Anthropologie because their displays were tastefully done. Vibrant colored textiles, carved wooden objects, dolls, furniture, clothing, bracelets, art, kites, lanterns, ornaments, hair accessories, door handles, paper flowers, kids toys, and so, so much more! Most with an Asian origin. Piled high and on every imaginable space. Visual feast or sensory overload? Treasure or dime store items? Definitely depends on who is doing the looking and the shopping. Used to frequent Cargo when they were down in the Pearl. The colorful lanterns hanging in mass outside lured me in, such a contrast to the Blue Hour and other restaurants and shops surrounding them. They have now moved across the River on SE Yamhill a block off Water Ave. The lanterns no longer hang out front but the elaborate display on the stairs and doorway shouts CARGO. Again, it lured me in. I'm always amazed by just how much stuff is in this place! Who dusts it all? Baskets overloaded with inexpensive bangles from India. A wall of creepy doll heads. An area dedicated to houseplants, and I must say they were all thriving and beautiful. A table stacked with books about China, Thailand, Vietnam, etc. Colorful paper lanterns hanging above. Everywhere silk branches of pink cherry blossoms, yellow forsythia and white Japanese bells. So much stuff! They now have a small Japanese cafe, Giraffe, in the corner to the left of the front door, selling lunch items, drinks and Japanese snacks plus some Japanese pantry staples. An area called Tasi is dedicated to jewelry from local artists and stands out with its simple white frame and clear window design. Inside Tasi is clean, streamlined, calm. I linger there. The main counter is still loaded with Ayala Bar designs, which I love and on many. She makes colorful jewelry from pieces of material and metal, each a piece of art. This counter has lots of sterling silver jewelry plus a large assortment of brass and metal jewelry. While I love the Ayala Bar jewelry, Tasi jewelry and houseplants, that's not what I am here to buy. I'm here searching for that unique find, a treasure, big or small that I just have to have! As usual, I leave empty handed. The overloaded shelves are fun to look at, but there isn't anything I want to own or display in my house or on my person. There aren't any items that seem like gifts that my friends would enjoy. So I snap a few more pics on the way out and since I'm in the area, wander across the street to check out the party store. read more

I like what I bought the items are really cute- but the cashier charged me $25 for items that were priced at max a total of $19. I paid cash and wasn't offered a receipt (my fault for not asking). By the time I realized what happened, I was already too far away to go back. Even if one item was double charged accidentally, it wouldn't have been $25 as the grand total - so it's kinda odd to me. I think you can almost deck out your digs with Cargo's items. It's really an international-lover's paradise for unique items. I had blinders on and just had my heart set on hunting for a rustic shelf for MiniMe's new apartment- but Cargo isn't an Antique store. However, a few of their items can be passed off as that. This isn't for the stream-lined in mind either. What you'll find though- are fabulous costume metal jewelry, dramatic African cowrie shell Necklaces, Tibetan Bracelets and so much other Home stuff- plus some Masculine items also. Some of Cargo's products themselves are on the higher end of the price spectrum. There's a wonderful range of eclectic and Global Mix details to really give your home some real good funk. Nothing here is understated- it's actually just straight out bold in a colorful and natural way. Truly like Cargo's stunning style. This place is an experience unlike any other! If you like Etsy and wish they had a brick and mortar store where you could view items from local artisans and relics from all over the world, this is the place! Whenever we have family or friends over to visit, we usually bring them here to see what's new! It's like walking into an art installation. I always tell people it's like World Market on acid and that usually piques their interest. I've purchased a lot of jewelry, clothes, and gifts for my wife. About half of her jewelry collection is from Cargo. She gets tons of compliments every time she wears a piece from Cargo. Now, to make the place even more exciting, they now have a vinyl record section and coming from a DJ in a past life that's been buying records for over 40 years, their selection and price is like any other good record store!
