This is how we got our dog back from Mukota Kennel. DO NOT TAKE YOUR PETS THERE!!!!!!
    Michele N.

We dropped our hound dog off for a few days while we went out of state. We picked him up and got him home and he had been bathed, which we didn't ask for so we thought wow, these are nice people. WRONG. Our dog had been bitten by another dog in their care. Deep bites. My guess is theyour bathed him to get the blood off so we wouldn't notice. I emailed them promptly and was told nothing happened to my dog in their care and he had not been bathed. So that's why he has deep bite wounds and smells like dog shampoo? DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMALS HERE!!!!!!

After reading this Kennel's website and speaking to their staff, I was hoping this would be the ideal place to board our dog when we vacationed in a nearby town. Their website description of 20+ acres of land, hand walking free of charge access to their own private outdoor area and staff on site 24 hours a day sounded wonderful. Sadly not everything advertised was actually true. I had made reservations for our dog to be boarded at Mukota Kennels 2 weeks before the week of July 2nd, 2012. I even arranged for a visit to their Kennel the week before so that my dog could get comfortable with his surroundings. This is were my concern started. The chain link kennels the dogs stayed in were about waist high at their tallest. I could see a taller dog having trouble staying in there. Although they had access to a private outside area, the dog doors to the outside (which were on pulleys) were closed both during my initial visit as well as my subsequent visit (which I will get to in a bit). There was no way a dog could go outside on their own unless the staff opened the door. It also seemed to me that ventilation in the kennel area was not the greatest. Although I did not experience it first hand, it seemed that this would be an ideal breeding ground for kennel cough. The teen age staff that I encountered that Sunday afternoon seemed friendly enough and my dog was friendly to them. I am sure they would have interacted with my dog fine (had my dog actually stayed there). I confirmed my appointment for the following week during their open hours between 4PM-6PM on Sundays and told the staff I would see them next week. If I was uncomfortable at the my experience during my first visit, it was my drop off experience that was the kicker. I arrived at Mukota at around 4:30PM on Sunday afternoon and saw the kennel sign on the door stating they were closed. Must be a mistake and since they had staff on site 24 hours a day. I though there must be someone at the house. So I knocked on the doors. No luck. I walked around and called out in case someone was one the phone or on in the restroom or walking around the property. No luck. Called and left messages on their phone number twice. No luck. I waited around the property for an hour hoping someone would return, but unfortunately no luck. I peeked inside the kennel area. It was dark, all the dog doors were closed and only a room fan was running to keep air moving. So there I was, miles from home on a Sunday afternoon with a 100lb dog in my car and no place to go. Thankfully, Yelp came to my rescue! I was able to locate Our Town Kennel in Peterborough, NH about 40 minutes away who was still open on a Sunday afternoon. See my review for them also on Yelp. In the end, I understand stuff happens. Life throws us a number of emergencies that we cannot possibly account for when running a small business. In my experience, a follow up call, an explanation, an apology, etc. would have gone a long way for customer satisfaction. However, I never received that call even though they had my contact information. Its for these reasons that Mukota Kennels gets a single star for me. Maybe someone else may have a better experience with them, but I cannot recommend them.

This is my dog Hoss @mukotakennel. They call him handsome Hoss. He's a happy boy!

My dog's nose had cuts from the fencing more than once and the staff was actively rude and participated in rumor mongering.

We were also told that the grooming would be recorded so that we could watch the session if anything weird happens. When we picked up our dogs, it became clear that the boy's grooming was incomplete. He had little knots on his head and a large knot on his tail, as well as a new bald spot on his chest. When we spoke to the groomer about it, she said that he was difficult and wouldn't sit still so that she couldn't complete it, and she said that the bald spot was a cowlick. This didn't *seem* right, because he gets groomed 4 times a year and in the previous place they never had any issues with him at all, and we pet his chest all the time and would've noticed a bald cowlick spot before. She was also not told that the girl was supposed to get a pretend grooming session at all, so that never happened. Since the boy has never been an issue before, we wanted to see the video that we were told we could see if we requested it (we wanted to know what might've set him off), but then we were told that we couldn't because the video system has been down for weeks. The manager I spoke with didn't care and just told me that the groomers rent out the rooms so they aren't responsible for what they do. We contacted the owner but she hasn't responded and instead blocked us on the company Facebook page. Best case, this place has terrible communication amongst the staff and the groomer, poor customer service, and a broken video system. I wouldn't trust my dogs there.

They also said they did transport to the daycare facility and boarding on occasion. It seemed perfect. I should mention that there are Kara's pet care facilities in Portsmouth, Berwick, and Falmouth. First I was asked to set up a meet and greet with one of their associates at my home so she could meet my pets. It took me many tries to get through many unreturned phone calls, but finally we did set up the meet and greet and that went well. Then I was asked to set up an app and an account before we could actually schedule any dog care. So I set up the app and the account. Then I was asked to drive my dogs to their facility to see if the dogs would "be happy there." So I drove my dogs 25 minutes to the facility. When I got to the facility I was told that they were supposed to stay there for a day assessment and then I should come and pick them up. This was not communicated to me earlier, and I had not budgeted an extra hour of driving back-and-forth. Then they would reschedule the assessment and they would come and pick up my dogs for the day-long assessment. All before any dog care could be scheduled. So, still not on the calendar. So to summarize: you need to go through a long process of scheduling a meet and greet, then you need to have the meet and greet, then you need to sign up for the app, then your dogs have to be assessed to see if they will be happy. I'm just thinking that anyone who's busy enough to need dog care is too busy for this multilayered, multi-step, poorly communicated process where phone calls, texts, and emails are returned only about half the time.
