I rarely change a star after yelping. It only took a DC blizzard to get us to return to the "scene of the crime" where so many things went wrong on our June '15 visit. The manager told us that she would take care of us if we ever wanted to give them a second chance. When I gave my information, the receptionist remembered our story. It was so unusual that she recalled several things that went wrong during our visit. The most disappointing detail from the first visit was being put in the wrong building. The second visit was completely different from the first one. We were shown several rooms since everyone knew how unhappy we were on the first visit. We stayed in an efficiency with a full sized kitchen, roomy living area and a king sized bed (at a discount to make up for the nightmare visit). The windows had lots of natural light and the place was cozy. The place was clean. We weren't afraid to sit down. The housekeeping manager checked on us and made sure we had towels and extra toiletries. The manager really cared about our comfort. She was mortified to learn about our previous visit. The only detail that remained the same from both visits was having an employee in the dining area that didn't seem to enjoy working there. I felt as if I was interrupting her tv time when I helped myself to the milk the the fridge. The complimentary breakfast included: sausage, meat patties, biscuits & gravy, scrambled eggs. hard boiled eggs, cereals, waffles, bagels or toast, yogurt, pastries, oatmeal and grits. There was also coffee, tea and four juices. Giving management a second chance made a difference. read more

I showed up this evening with my party of 12, having booked 4 rooms (with a printed confirmation in hand). The front desk clerk is completely useless and ignorant. After searching for a couple of minutes she tells me that she can not find any rooms for us. She reads over the printed confirmation sheet...says it doesn't help her, she has no rooms booked and tells me that its not her problem. After going around and around with her, she refers me to Expedia. While standing at the front desk, Expedia calls her, tells her that the rooms were booked, they attempt to provide her confirmation #s, etc. Same result, she doesnt have any rooms booked and it isnt her problem. We have to end up, last minute rebooking rooms at a nearby hotel (Days Inn). PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE, save yourself the headache and aggravation of having to deal with this establishment and the useless lady at the front desk. read more

I stayed here over Christmas, so review is somewhat outdated. I had stayed here and the adjacent property which was a Holiday Inn Express for several years. The HIE closed and the Mulberry took over use of both buildings. However, the staff reported the newer building that once housed the HIE will soon be a Comfort Inn by Spring. The Mulberry is right off the Ft. Eustis Base making it very convenient for those visiting the area. We have at least an annual swim meet on base and this location works out perfectly. Parking is not an issue unless they are sold out, then it is tight. The lot remained clean on our two day stay. The trash can by the door was kept tidy through the weekend. The exterior of the hotel is well maintained and a Christmas wreath adorned the front of the building. No issues with check in and the price was definitely right, some where around $75. Staff was nice and helpful. This is a no frills type of property, so don't expect a lavish lobby. However, it was well kept up. The room on check in was clean. It came with a refrigerator at no additional cost which was appreciated. However, no microwave and most likely they could accommodate if one was needed. The bathroom is ridiculously small, but everything worked. There were plug-ins around for electronic devices. Bed sheets, pillows and cover were in good shape on the two standard beds, however I did not find them comfortable. There is also FREE WiFi which is always welcomed. A FREE hot breakfast is offered in the older Mulberry property. I found it adequate for the price point of the hotel. The area was kept up and clean each day. Staff was in the area, but no advert chatting with guest which is always welcome by me. The property is clean, staff friendly, price is surely right. I am at a 3.5, but rounding down due to the bed not being comfortable for my taste. In my opinion the current rating of a 2 is not correct at all and consider them on par for price point. I will most likely end up here, or the new branded Comfort Inn when opened. read more

Booked room there for 9/13/23 to 9/16:23 through their website, while on the phone with their aydsyyhdhss front desk .They never mentioned that they were renevating. My fiancé arrived to find the main lobby full of refrigerators and couches standing on their side. Other amenities shown on website were no available. The swimming pool was cllosed, there was construction supplies all over. scaffolds, lumber, paint cans . When she got to her room, the door appeared to have been forced open by a crowbar. The safety lock , a hook that goes from the door frame to a hook on the door was broken. The hook on the door was missing. the deadbolt didn't work either and the ac wasn't work ing. She took pictures of all of it and called me. I ca Lord the front desk and questiond why we weren't informed about the renovation work, that some amenities were not available. She checked out about an hour after getting there. Didn't spend one night of the 3 knight booked for safety reasons.. The manager told me they won't refund my money. Absolutely do not recommend this for anyone right now at least until renovation are done and place cleaned up. I'm only giving 1 star because the building is still standing where it supposed to be. People were not respectful and got nasty when challenged about the condition. The ordered mMy fiancé off the prop and called the police. Not much to look at from the outside, even less from the inside. The main lobby is so fresh and clean, but walking down the corridor of the back building looks like a place a person would be held hostage, because who would stay there willingly? We only got through one night. There are pee stains on the floor, the kind that nobody has even attempted to clean. Smells like grannies and cigarettes in that place. Stains and sticky substance (old soda?) on the walls, on the floors, in the corners and crevices. Our beds weren't even made upon arrival and they left us ONE bath towel in the room. The carpet is so dirty it has that waxy feeling on it, definitely wear socks, maybe sleep with your shoes on. I'd give this place no stars if I could. read more

You walk in and immediately get smacked in the face with the smell of mothballs, went down the hall to our room and all you smell is weed I could frankly careless if it was a smoking hotel but being put into a room next to someone who's burning when you have 3 small children is a no go for me. Stayed in the room for 10 mins and walked out, garbage wasn't changed, carpets weren't vacuumed, the vent for the AC looks like it hasn't been clean since the place opened, hole punched into the wall I didn't even tear apart the beds like I normally do whenever I go into a hotel bc of the fear of what I would find. If I was having a motel party when I was younger this would've been a good place but for a family of 5 staying one night to visit there loved one on base is a disgrace. We checked in the Mulberry Inn on Wednesday. The service was awful after checking in. The manager seemed offended because we were black. My son and his family was forced to move to a substandard room that smelled of urine The beds was hard as rocks and had millipedes because they had their two-year-old dog with them. The manager raise the price of the room yet they downgraded the room the staff majority white seem to treat us as though we were Low class citizens. I don't recommend the Mulberry if you are a person of color because they have really no respect for people of color so if you are a black you do not want to stay at the Mulberry Inn. read more

This hotel met my expectations and then went beyond! The staff is very friendly and helpful. They have a continental breakfast, game room, fitness center, and theater room. You can rent movies at the front desk. The rooms are spacious with wonderful heating units and very clean. They have a mini fridge, a microwave, an ironing board, and on site laundry. After two other hotels I've stayed in on my trip with my husband from fort jackson to fort Eustis this one is astounding and affordable. There isn't food in direct sight, but a short drive down the road and you'll find fast food and 7-11. It's very close to fort Eustis. read more

Easily the most uncomfortable bed I have ever attempted to sleep in my entire life. I had stayed at Mulberry Inn years ago and it was decent so when I had to make a quick trip to Newport News, I thought I would revisit the Inn. What a mistake. The Inn was being renovated, but apparently not anywhere near the room I was assigned. It was so dated and not the cleanest place I have ever stayed. If I hadn't only been staying one night, I probably would have left, but to be honest I wasn't spending much time in the room anyway. Back to that bed - I finally figured out at about 4 am in total frustration that if I laid across the mattress sideways my back didn't hurt quite so much. So as to avoid a long drive home after seeing the sites in Williamsburg, my wife and I decided to get a hotel room in nearby Newport News. Prior to booking a room, we read many reviews and were chary about the many popularly priced places which also carried complains about cleanliness and safety. Thus we opted to pay a little more to stay in a Deluxe King Suite at the Mulberry Inn, as was not far from Busch Gardens, it hosted a substantial complimentary breakfast, it also had an outdoor pool, WiFi, a business center and was not notorious for being unclean. We had two different room experiences at the Mulberry Inn. We checked in a 8:45pm and unbeknownst to us, the second shift desk clerk mistakenly assigned us into an efficiency room for the night. This room had a two burner stove, an efficiency refrigerator and a microwave. I was put off by bathroom which was a 5x6' water closet with a toilet and a tub and almost no room to move. The room had a 32" tube Zenith television which must have been 10 years old. These quirks were disappointing but we might have chosen to grin and bear it until the unkept state of the room became evident. The lighting was dim (one lamp did not work), the carpeting was uneven and there were cobwebs, bugs and bathroom grime which prompted us to call the front desk. The night clerk tried to placate us by offering us a switch to an adjacent efficiency which looked no better. It was only the next morning that we discovered that we should have been in The Plaza" with the Deluxe room layout, and more updated amenities not cell block "D". The Mulberry Inn has a theater room for watching DVDs on a bigger screen 24 hour exercise room and a game room with a full sized billiards table. Both the administrative building and the Plaza have a computer with an attached printer which serves as the business center. I was disappointed that the maid had usurped the Plaza business center computer as her streaming video station for most of the day. There is a decent outdoor pool for warmer months. I went for a swim in the morning and in the mid- afternoon and found that there were several unsupervised children ediving in the pool. This seemed to violate a couple of hotel posted rules but it was not my place to intervene. However, I noticed that after their swim, two of the children retreated to the maid who was still watching streaming media on the business center computer. It would seem that hotel amenities should be reserved for guests and not dominated by the staff and their wards. The Mulberry Inn offers a breakfast from 6am-9am weekdays and 10am weekends. There is a waffle maker, cold cereals, yoghurt, scrambled eggs, hard boiled eggs, bagels and breakfast meats. One morning, there was biscuits and gravy along with sausage patties. The next morning sausage links but no gravy. This breakfast is a nice feature. However, there were some anomalies. The first day had yoghurt which was 5 days past expiration, but this was corrected on the second morning. The first morning had very ripe bananas. The next day's breakfast had a bunch with splotchy black spots indicating that the bananas were over ripe. In addition, Moreover, the orange juice on the first morning tasted fine but the next day both the orange and cranberry juice tasted like they were just colored water. After the day staff discovered our difficulties, they sought to make things right about the wrong room. Their efforts allow me to make a hesitant recommendation for the Mulberry Inn, especially if you are attached to Fort Eustis. That being said, I advise inspecting a room before finishing the registration process as the Mulberry Inn hosts several classes of rooms on the same campus with varying quality and price point so make sure you get what you have intended to reserve. read more

We rented a room here for a week from the internet. The place looked beautiful, well kept and clean. What we found when we arrived was totally different. The property was no where near the condition shown on the internet. Doors into rooms were kicked inward at the bottom, hall walls were dirty and the outside of the place had cracked and peeling paint in places. Our room which should have been ready at 3:00 was not ready. When they had a room for us we went to see it only to find a room that smelled like cigarette smoke with a TV that did not work. The management was very polite and understanding in issuing us a full refund to our card. This could be a beautiful property, and from what I was told is part of Comfort Inn. Although their website says they're pet friendly, not every room is. We booked a studio, studios aren't pet friendly. The website doesn't mention that just certain rooms are pet friendly. They do have a nice "pet area". They put us in another room and discounted the rate. Which was nice until we saw the new room. Floor felt wet and or damp the entire time, seen roaches, and it's not located in the best part of town. It's not the Ritz but it was nice and I would stay there again. Some of the rooms are on the second floor and there's no elevator. If you can't do the stairs, I would mention it when you book. If you need extra towels or anything, you have to go to the front desk to get it. But the pool provides you with towels, so that is nice. The room was clean. No evidence of bed bugs. My family enjoyed the pool, but there was an incident with a filter which left a mark on my husband's back. They said they would handle it. The breakfast was crowded, but they opened an extra room. We got a good deal on this hotel from CheapTickets. I picked this hotel because for the price everyone kept talking about how great the breakfast was. There was a waffle machine, pancake machine, scrambled eggs, sausage, 4 different types of cereal, hard boiled eggs, bread for toast, beagles, mini muffins, yogurt, apples, and either banana or oranges. There was also coffee and 3 juices apple, orange, and cranberry. Our toilet was broken and would run unless you would mess with the handle. The handle was actually hanging out of the front of toilet! So I'm not sure how they didn't know about it and have it fixed before we got the room. There was also spilled milk or ice cream left in the bottom of our fridge. My husband's bed was comfortable but mine was very lumpy and fell towards the middle. We also a lot of lumpy pillows. There was 4 of us staying in our room but we kept getting enough towels and wash clothes for 3 people and they were very rough like sand paper. I suggest bringing your own towels. They also had a vinegar smell to them. I assume they use it as part of the washing process. My husband joked called them our exfoliating large hand towels because that's exactly what the bath towels are like!! We lost a hair tie under the dresser that the tv set on and I ended up throwing it away because it was so dirty under there i'm pretty sure it's probably been years since they swept under there. Overall for the price I can say that it was ok and that I definitely wouldn't of payed the regular price they charge!! read more

Not much has changed, the rooms are the same..overall so 3 stars from me because I think the rooms are dated and could use a refresher the wallpaper, curtains and quilts on the beds....in all still very good staff decent house keeping, some rooms are pet friendly!!!! Good areas to walk the dogs! The pool is nice they take good care of it. The breakfast in the morning is included and for Being included its a great buffet style variety! Anyone who stays here will feel at home when they're away from home. Close to ft. Eustis so if the on post hotels are full certainly just come across the way. Military friendly! Family friendly! check in was quick, the building was under construction but the entrances to my room were filled with plaster dust. it was everywhere in the hallway and stairs. we got in late and had been at the hospital with my daughter. we traveled 200 miles and chose Mulberry because it was close to my daughters house. the room wasn't bad at first look. I pulled the sheets down to check for bedbug infestation but did not see any evidence. there was no comforters on the beds just sheets. when I turned the heat on there were rocks or something that blew out of it. the room did not have any cups or ice bucket no extras which I thought was weird. we were exhausted and layed down to sleep. I woke 3 hours later getting bit by bedbugs! I was able to catch a couple and put them in plastic to show the manager. I went to the bathroom to take a shower so we could change and leave but the shower didn't work! the water didn't come on at all! we had to wash in the sink and put our clothes and anything else that may have touched the bed in plastic bags! it was horrible. I immediately called Priceline since that is who I booked the room for 3 days through they said the manager had to approve the refund. the manager argued it because I didn't go to him first. it took a lot of arguing and he did cancel the rest of my reservation but wouldn't refund the first night. i brought him the bugs I put in plastic and had the nerve to say I brought them with me. very disappointed and overall disgusted. never again! read more

I am the most germaphobic person in the world and finding a "cheap" hotel that is nice enough to stay in takes a lot of research --all while hoping for the best. Hands down an A-okay hotel to stay in. The room was clean and not musty like I read in some other reviews. The bed was clean and comfy. The microwave and fridge were also clean. The bathroom was up-to-snuff clean! There was a hair dryer and ample room to move throughout the room. It's not the Hilton folks, but it will do and I felt safe. Close to Fort Eustis too. There is a nice little breakfast --both hot and cold. Don't expect a crazy buffet. The dining area was clean and I wasn't grossed out. So that was a plus. I cannot stress enough: Do not be wary of the pricing. Melody at the front desk was extremely helpful. Thank you Melody. I think the only thing that I really noticed were the quality of the towels. They weren't the greatest, but they did the job. Just a note: when entering the parking lot into the hotel I wish that there was a more defining notice or sign for the entrance. This was hands down the worst place I stayed. The place was dirty and rooms were smoking. Despite the fact that I asked for a non smoking room and they assured me that I would I got a smoking room. We had to cut our trip short and left early. Please if you see any other option consider those and keep this as your last resort. read more

For the price that we got this room for, this is a bargain. The staff was friendly, and most importantly, the rooms were very clean. We had no issues here except the shower didn't drain too. Breakfast was a little crazy because of all of the people in a small area with little seating. But it was a continental breakfast so it meant we didn't have to even leave the hotel and spend the extra money; that's worth it in my book. The surrounding area seemed a little rough, but the convenience of it being right off of the expressway had its obvious benefits. And it was only an hour away from Virginia Beach. Again, if you're looking for something upscale with nice scenery and a lot to do in the area, this is not the place. If you're looking for a clean place to stay as you stop through here on the way to another destination, this is the place to be. read more

Let me start off by saying that the staff was extremely kind and helpful. Unfortunately, we had the worst experience at this hotel. We checked in late on Friday (Saturday morning) and we got room 142. It smelled so musty but we put up with it and went to bed. Now, we did check for bedbugs and didn't see anything. In the morning, we got to really see how bad the room was. There was mold on the chair in the corner, white mold marks in the carpet in front of the bathroom door and around the dresser. When I took a shower it leaked behind the wall and soaked the carpet. I asked to be moved and they did. Again, the staff was extremely accommodating and apologetic. We were moved to room 106 which appeared much better and without stains, mold or smell. We were in a hurry and didn't bother to check for bedbugs. Well....the next morning we awoke to a bedbug crawling on the sheet. After inspecting we found a couple more small ones. We immediately started packing away our belongings and I called the front desk to tell them. No manager was on duty on Sunday so the front desk personnel asked if I could capture one and bring it to her as proof to show her manager. I got 2 in a cup and took them to her. She said a manager will be contacting me on Monday (today). This is my first incident with bedbugs as I have always checked our rooms whenever we stay anywhere. The place is nice and has many amenities (billiard room,fitness room, pool,theater room), the hot continental breakfast is excellent and staff is amazing but, the hotel has its problems. Going rate was $95/night but I had asked about the manager special that's advertised on their website and got it at $70. We stayed at this location on April 30, 2016 while visiting our soldier in Va. Since we were only staying one night, we quicklupy looked for a hotel nearby Ft. Eustis with a kitchen available, and one that offered hot breakfast. The staff was accommodating, and pleasant. We arrived early after a long 6 hour trip and we were allowed to check in early. The room was vey small, and was furnished with a small refrigerator, dual range top, and microwave. We needed a full refrigerator for all of the home-made treats that we brought for our soldier. Once we inquired for a room with a full kitchen/refrigerator which is what I thought I had booked, we were relocated, and charged a reasonable fee of $15. However, we still had to contact the front desk for the kitchen pits, tools, dishes, and silverware. Why rent a room with a full kitchen, and have the guests spend time calling housekeeping, and the front desk? Except for the bathroom, the room size and kitchen were in the average range. However the maintenance, and housekeeping need serious upgrading and training. The toilet had a slow leak, the stovetop had grease splatter, the rug didn't appear to be vacuumed, and there were some red looking worms all over. I know that there are some critters in the south, but we informed the front desk, and although they send maintenance to pick the worms up, and asked them to vacuum, they picked up the worms, but when we retuned from Bush Gardens, we were disappointed that the room had not been vacuumed. We were tired, and only staying for one night, so we didn't want house keeping to come to the room again. We wiped down the stove, made our dinner, showered, and went to bed. We asked for a late check out and that was honored, but will not be staying at this location again. read more
