We had a great stay here in the Bob Timberlake cottage along the marina. It is a beautiful location with a lovely waterfront view of the boats. The cottage itself is well appointed with a coffee maker, mini fridge, microwave, and hair dryer. The decor is nautical with lots of wood details. Our only issue was the humidity in the room left the bed linens feeling a tad damp when we returned to the room at the end of the day. There is a coffee bar where you check in and a continental breakfast is included in the morning that had juices, coffee l, cereal l, pastries, eggs, bacon and pancakes. Great location on the water. Close to downtown Smithfield. Sadly for the price not a great place to stay. It does have historic appeal. However, the bed mattresses were too soft (made sleep very difficult). The carpets although vacuumed still smelled dirty. It is probably the best place in town to stay- expensive. Myself and my boyfriend have frequented this spot for a while now. Ms. Pat is our favorite bartender. But all of the staff is wonderful. The drinks are wonderful but the food isn't as wonderful as it used to be. The food here has nothing special to it. At least I say that about the lunch and dinner menu. Now the Sunday morning brunch buffet, That is something you must experience. Made to order omelets and all of the sides and fixings you can imagine for breakfast. The bathrooms, even when the restaurant is crowded, are always nice and clean and well stocked. If something is empty the staff is quick to remedy the situation. We were excited for this stay, but that waned quickly Positive: it's a replica lighthouse, has a jacuzzi tub and room service from a decent restaurant is available. There is also a marina there if needed. You're not far from the James River bridge and most anything else in the Hampton Roads area. Negative: this is an expensive place to stay, especially on weekends; once you're past that, it expressly says "children are not permitted for overnight accommodations in this suite"......lies. We spent both nights up at random times due to a very unhappy infant (who wasn't supposed to be there in the first place). My other half was met with low grade hostility from the front desk staff the next morning when she brought it up. The view is everything!! I was a little disappointed in the dish I ordered because it was overrated. I ordered the Lasagna dish which was mostly cheese and not a lot of seafood and I don't recall there being much at all. The service was okay but with it being as hot as it was, we had to continue asking for water service. We stayed here for the second time. The 1st time the 3rd floor King with oversized shower. The second time with a jacuzzi tub. Problem was the tub was way too small. I'm a bit taller and it was too short for me. Views are pretty, staff friendly. The balcony was very nice. The bed wasn't very comfy. Room was clean and spacious. My only knock is the CONSTANT air fragrance being blown in the lobby. We both have asthma/allergies. It gave us a headache. It gave my husband a runny nose. Not everyone can handle smells. When we checked out their were two infusers going. The smell seems to travel everywhere, on the towels, elevator. read more

Smithfield Station has been one of my top local choices for fine dining for more than a decade. On my most recent visit there, I was very disappointed and unimpressed. They will not take reservations, so I was a little anxious upon driving up to see that the parking lots in front of the restaurant/hotel and across the street were nearly full. This was on a Saturday late afternoon/early evening. I thought that maybe we did not beat the crowd to the restaurant and would be waiting for a table. However, I should have kept in mind that the parking lots are shared with the marina, the hotel, and Windsor Castle Park. There were many empty tables in the restaurant, and we were seated immediately. The ambience of the dining room was unchanged: bright, clean, casual, and nautically themed. Table service was prompt and friendly. I noted that there were few, if any, changes to the menu items from years' past; however, in keeping with the times, the prices have increased noticeably. Unfortunately, while the prices have gone up, the quality and quantity of the food served and the thought that went into its preparation and plating have gone down considerably. The steamed shrimp ($21.95/lb.) were not deveined and, therefore, were a chore to peel. Furthermore, they were served without finger wipes, so they made for a messy first course. The blackened shrimp and salmon ($27.95) came with a piece of salmon smaller than is served at Ruby Tuesday's and four medium-sized shrimp. The bearnaise sauce accompanying them was improperly prepared as it was separating on the plate. This never should have left the kitchen! (We also thought that there was too much conflict between the flavors of the blackened seasoning and the bearnaise sauce; that is a matter of taste, but something to consider.) The seafood combination platter ($31.95) came with four medium-small shrimp, four small bay scallops, a moderately sized piece of flounder, and a nicely sized but very bland and mushy crab cake. It came with two of the most tasteless hush puppies I've ever eaten, or, in this case, did not want to eat. I would have felt that I was overcharged for this dish even at half the price. I was also dissatisfied that the entrées were served with a choice either a potato or a vegetable, not a potato and vegetable. Again, the portion size of the side dish was small. My conclusion: ambience and the dearth of competition for fine dining in Smithfield will not be enough to keep this restaurant afloat without prompt and significant changes. Pick up your game, Pack family! We can get better meals elsewhere at half the price. read more

Where was the She Crab Soup, the seafood? My friend's bloody mary was weak at best. We had a pleasant one-night stay at the Smithfield Station Inn. The staff at the front desk were friendly and helpful. We stayed in the fly fishing room in the boardwalk cottage, which was well appointed and very clean. The view from our porch was so pretty! It was a bit too cold to enjoy it but there are chairs on the porch for nicer weather. We slept great on the very comfortable bed. We would stay here again. The inn loses a star because we realized when our neighbors arrived back home to their room (there are three in the cottage) that it had shockingly thin walls. We could hear every word and even the "plink" when they put their room key down on the table. Awkward! Also, while this wasn't noisy or bothersome to us, the bridge runs directly behind these rooms. I ordered the sweet potato entrusted rockfish, which our server informed us was either a hit or a miss with patrons. Unfortunately for me, it was a miss. The glaze sauce was far too sweet and overpowered any subtly that the rockfish had. The dish came with Smithfield ham, but it was difficult to distinguish. It was a complicated dish that could be re-worked into something better. I was at least appreciative of the uniqueness of the dish. The entree came with two sides and I ordered the full portion so I didn't leave hungry. I also got the ham biscuits as an appetizer, which was good, but I think you can find better in Smithfield. I ordered the Ham-Hattan from the cocktail menu (a Manhattan garnished with ham and melon) for the novelty value. It wasn't bad, although it became salty near the bottom and I'm not a huge fan of that. Give it a few stirs as you drink it to keep the ham from making your drink too briny. It was a good meal, although a little on the expensive side for the food and atmosphere. The waitstaff was hospitable and the menu selection was above average. I would gladly go back. read more

We picked this place based on a friend's recommendation and stayed here for one evening. It is a family owned business with a very nice staff at the hotel and restaurant. There are a few small shops on premises including a particularly cool little wine shop. The hotel: The double queen room over the restaurant was clean. The bathroom was much smaller than what one typically expects in a newer hotel, but this place is several years old. The tub could have been cleaner and the floor was in desperate need of re-grouting The outdoor pool was clean and quiet although the towels provided were in need of replacements, they were small and not in the best condition. We enjoyed dinner at the restaurant. The beer was fresh, the servings were large and tasty and the service was fantastic. I'd give the restaurant 4 stars and the hotel 2.5. It is definitely worth a visit for a short stay. read more

We have stayed here 4 times this past year and unfortunately we wont be coming back Original experience was excellent but each stay since progressively gets worse. Final staw...New years ever pool side cabin rental. Manager finds blame everywhere else but the hotel. Phone in room works intermittently ... must have been the weather Heat did not kick on for first 45 minutes we were there. Thermostat was set at 68 upon arrival.... Mind you it was 14 degrees out. Excuse .. It was working when maid cleaned the Room. Only 2 towels in Room. No wash clothes hand towels.... me that's the normal amount.for a nights stay...bs...weve previously Next blame elsewhere tactic.... Room service not the responsibility of the hotel but they had old menu in the room and sent us wrong food and charged us for 2 drinks we didn't get. Became comical. They substituted our ap for tortilla chips with bbq and sweet bbq sauce on them in lieu of the menu beef nachos lettuce cheese we ordered. Final laugh was when the remote for the tv stopped working...we went to bed. Sorry to say we won't be back. Service will be the downfall and that is a shame because it is beautiful. read more

The wife and I live in Norfolk and decided to drive out to Smithfield area and we stopped at the Smithfield Station and had a great meal. Very nice restaurant that had a good view of the water. I can't say enough great things about their barbecue it was fantastic. I enjoyed the barbecue so much I can't even remember what the wife had other than a crab dip which was also excellent as an appetizer we will definitely be back even tho it's a good ride not just around the corner. read more

As a child, I would greatly anticipate our forays out to Smithfield Station. We lived in Williamsburg, and would take the Jamestown Ferry across the river. The ferry itself was super fun (bring a bag of bread crumbs for the gulls!) and then the drive through the scenic farmland was always spectacular. But obviously the true highlight of the day was the delicious brunch at Smithfield Station. The view across the marina is spectacular, the service is outstanding, and the food speaks for itself. Over the years the menu has changed as the chefs have changed, but overall the quality is outstanding. As long as I can remember they've been ahead of the trend and provided locally caught fresh fish, meats, and local grown vegetables. I firmly believe this makes all the difference in the flavors of the dishes they prepare. Smithfield Station is a supreme example of traditional Virginia coastline cuisine, served with the grace and elegance of hospitality that only the South can provide in a gorgeous waterfront setting. Between the service and food, this place was just terrible. They have a breakfast buffet with an omelet bar from 8-12 on Sundays that we had heard good things about, so I went to check it out with my family. We were seated pretty quickly and immediately got in the buffet line - that's where the problems start - no plates. So we alerted a server and waited for about 5 minutes with a line steadily growing behind us. Our first pass at the buffet was okay. Almost all of the fruit was gone, but there was plenty of biscuits, gravy, meat and eggs. Food: The gravy tasted like wet flour - that's it. The hash was slimy and everything was meh, except the waffles - those were good. At second pass at the buffet, everything else was out, empty trays everywhere and this was about 45 minutes before they were supposed to shut down. I don't know if they couldn't handle the demand or just didn't care, but as we were paying about $15 a person, I was pretty unhappy. After brunch, we were finishing our drinks and catching up - it's Sunday brunch after all and the living is supposed to be easy. Not so much, the manager and waitress are standing about 5 feet away, talking about another party they had coming in. Apparently they needed our table, because the manager asks the waitress the 'stall' the party and comes to our table and starts clearing our drinks, and asking us if we needed anything else. Then she just hovered giving us the clear 'get the hell out' signal. Finally - One ladies room, with one stall out of order, leaving one stall for a packed restaurant, leading to a 7 person line. We overnighted here for a friends wedding and the hotel itself was decent but I would not rate it as superb. The room was a decent size with a king size bed and nice views of the marina but the bathroom was tiny. For the price we paid for the room my expectations were a bit higher. We tried the breakfast buffet in the morning and at $13.95 a head, I have to give it a thumbs down. Biscuits and gravy were a major fail. The biscuits were stone cold and the sausage gravy was tasteless. The scrambled eggs were overcooked and tasted like they had been sitting around a while. If you are going to do eggs then make sure you get the omelet guy to make something fresh for you. Really bad call on my part. They have bagels available but no toaster in sight. I mean, really? Who wants to eat an untoasted bagel? Oh yeah, beware if you order orange juice. They tack on $2.25 for a small glass with no offers of a refill. I reserved this room online and entered 2 adults/2 children and received confirmation. When I looked closely at the room I noticed their was no couch to pull out. I called to verify 4 people could sleep because I would be arriving in Va to bury my mother and I did not need any issues. Patti conformed I could get two queen beds and an email was sent to me with "yours in hospitality" Randy Pack. When I arrived no one was at the counter. I got my family of four and 10 pieces of luggage upstairs to the lobby. Maria finally came after I called the number and gave me my room. She tried to explain how to get to it and it wasn't available by elevator. I was patient and circled the building twice with my family and luggage and could not find the room. I went back to see maria and told her I could not find the room. She said " she was not required to personally bring me to the room" and "your white privilege will not work with me". I finally found the room thanks to another hotel customer. I arrived in the room and it had a newly wed couples name on it and I noticed there was nowhere for my daughters to sleep. I went to talk to the general manager to ask why my room is not what I reserved online. The older gentleman by the name of Dee Garland said" It was not his problem and their was nothing he could do to make me happy. I received my money back but no one showed any empathy or emotion to my situation. This is exactly why I called before arrival to avoid a situation like this in a devastating time in my life. This restaurant is part of the Smithfield Station marina complex located on the outskirts of the town of Smithfield. The town itself is a charmingly (mostly) restored old 18th century port city on the banks of the Pagan River (tributary of the James), and is a wonderful day trip destination for Tidewater history buffs. This facility, however, is a typical marina restaurant --- complete with burgers, fried seafood, imitation she-crab soup, and lots of beer drinkers --- and really seems out of place within Smithfield. Having said all that, the views of the tidal marsh and river from the outside deck are very nice, and, because the whole complex is a bit off the beaten path, the facility is a little more quiet than the average marina. The bar scene is typical marina, but pleasant. All the waitstaff we encountered were pleasant, and very helpful. Additionally, the complex contains a small hotel and several other retail shops, and is often used by local Tidewater boaters as a day trip destination away from the hubbub of Hampton Roads. If you like the marina restaurant scene, you'll probably enjoy the Smithfield Station restaurant. But then, you'll know not to be demanding of food quality, preparation and presentation, anyway... read more

My husband scored a great deal through Groupon for two nights at this charming inn, a bottle of champagne and chocolate-covered strawberries and a $40 voucher at the on-site restaurant all for $250! We decided to use our Groupon for Columbus Day weekend. It was a wonderful weekend get-away from where we live in busy Washington, DC...about a 4 hour drive away. The inn is located on the waterfront, along the Pagan River in charming, historic Smithfield. The lobby entrance was a bit tricky for us to find since it's in the middle of several entrances of shops all in the same compound. Just look out for the sign 'lobby!' Staff was very friendly and accommodating. The inn is family owned which is always a plus for me. It was a very quiet weekend, which was nice. We had a view of the water and sailboats from our cute, little patio on the 3rd floor. The room itself was clean and spacious. We stayed in a part of the inn that was recently renovated. The king sized bed was very comfortable. The room had a tv and access to free wifi...the right amenities if all you want to do is veg inside your room! The room also comes with a fridge and coffeemaker. And the bathroom is equipped with soap, shampoo, conditioner and lotion from Bath and Body Works. Location is supreme since you're a very quick drive from Main Street where Smithfield Ham Shoppe, museums, antique stores and other tourist spots can be found. If we decide to visit Smithfield again, staying here again is definitely a possibility! read more

I was quite disappointed with this hotel. The carpets were worn. The bathtub was old and stained. There was only one mirror in the room (one of my pet peeves) and it was in the small, dark bathroom. Breakfast sucked. I would rather pay for real eggs than free powdered eggs. I just want some real eggs when I travel. My boyfriend complained about the saltiness of the ham. I don't eat meat, so I can't attest to his complaint. They didn't even serve meat or eggs on Saturday. I will stay at the Hampton Inn when I next visit Smithfield. read more

Nice room (Lodge king w/balcony, everything in working order and above standard. Small balcony but adequate to relax in deck chair watching the marina. Restaurant was good with choices that were definitely not run of the mill. Close to historic Smithfield which is a really cute if not cool town - like stepping back in time. All members of staff were aces - friendly and competent. Close enough to Willamsburg/Norfolk/Virginia Beach if you're looking for a more active location. Con's: I can't think of any. Wonderful, peaceful place with great customer service. We stayed in the boardwalk rooms and had a great time. Rooms were newly decorated and very comfortable. A bigger bed would have been nice, but slept like a baby. The entire town seemed very friendly and efficient. We got a $40 gift card for the restaurant - and it had good seafood. There's free breakfast and its like a holiday inn breakfast - eggs, bacon, waffles, cereals, few pastries, some fruit, coffee, and bagels, yogurt. The lady in there was super nice, helpful and super efficient. We went antiquing on main street - check out the perspectives gift store- beautiful, well priced finds. We went to Bacon Castle - oldest brick building in N. America, Old St. Luke's church, a museum, watched a play at the little theater, and ate twice as Olde World Cafe. The hotel accommodations were decent but our balcony door would not lock. We called the front desk and were told that they could not do anything about it and that all the rooms might have the same problem even if we were moved to a different room. So we ended up moving two love seats in front of the door and hoped for the best. Also, we ordered a bottle of champagne and chocolate covered strawberries but the strawberries were old and subpar. After leaving, I realized I had left a pair of earrings behind. It took me the better part of a day to get a hold of someone that wouldn't put me on hold for ten minutes or ask me to call back later. After finally giving my address to someone, they asked for a credit card number to charge the shipping to. They literally charged me $1 to put my earrings into two envelopes and pay for the $0.47 postage. The best part of the story is that my earrings were stolen and there was no way to get them reimbursed because the hotel didn't get delivery confirmation or insurance on them. I would only recommend this place if your in a bind. read more

We spent two nights in the Captain Sinclair suite in the lighthouse celebrating our 20th anniversary. It is very nice with a gas fire place, double headed shower, jacuzzi tub, metal spiral staircase up to the light and great view. We saw a bald eagle our first morning. We enjoyed it very much. We had trouble with the gas fireplace each night, they fixed the first night but still did not work properly the second night. We went to the bar each night and had local Devils Backbone vienna lager and even ventured out and had a hamtini (a manhattan with cantaloupe wrapped in the local Smithfield ham). It was much better after the ham saturated the drink a bit. A fun experience anyway. read more

Be warned the "special night" food comes with all sorts of conditions including ending at 7PM. If that not bad enough you also have to be in specific areas of the restaurant or your not eligible either, so you better ask. Strikes me as bizzar and quite frankly super annoying to the point that I'll never go back that someone sitting ten feet from me got half off for the same food I was eating. read more

Husband and I got a Groupon for 2 nights. We went over Thanksgiving--their Thanksgiving meal special was delicious! The only other meals we ate there were continental breakfast, and they have some pretty good waffles in the DIY waffle iron. We stayed in a newly-renovated room, which looked different than the pictures on Smithefield's website. I was pleasantly surprised. The king-sized bed was very comfy, and the room and bathroom both were pretty big--much larger than a major chain hotel room. The town itself doesn't have a lot going on, but Main street has those cute shops you go into and browse for a few minutes but don't buy anything because it's not really your style. Luckily, it's not far from Jamestown or Williamsburg, which is what we did. read more

Really quaint boutique hotel located on the water and across the street from the Windsor Castle Park which was great for walking and running. Hotel is walking distance to the really cute downtown. Hotel was super clean and staff was extremely friendly and helpful. The rooms are updated on the newer section of the hotel and bed was very comfortable. If you don't book the water front side of the hotel the park side is also very pretty as you overlook the marsh waters at Windsor Castle Park. read more
