Good drink, good food, good atmosphere, small space

First time here, nice space , nice crowd friendly place. Stopped in for a couple apps ....ordered Nachos & wings. The wings were really good, we ordered Dry Rub which had great flavor with a kick. I wish that's all we ordered. DO NOT ORDER THE NACHOS, probably the lamest excuse for nachos I've ever seen or unfortunately hands down the worst, take them off your menu, honestly I don't even want to describe them. This place is honestly so good. Been here a few times with friends for food, drink or both and I always leave happy. It's a cool vibe, not super big so it can be a pain to wait to order on busy nights, but it's always worth it. The bartenders are friendly and really good at mixing drinks. There's also always a great selection of beers on tap. Last night I ordered the Impossible burger & rosemary fries and two Moscow mules. Delicious! Their fries are ridiculously good. Came here out of convenience as we were staying in the area for the weekend and we were not disappointed. We had some beers, poutine, chicken wings, and split a Reuben. The Reuben was delicious along with the poutine. The chicken wings were good too and have quite the kick to them. Mule Bar is the most recent addition to the bar / restaurant scene around the Winooski traffic circle. It was opened in early May by the owners of Montpelier's Three Penny Taproom. I had pretty high expectations because of the raving reviews I've heard / read about Three Penny but this place is mediocre at best. This place has approximately 16 craft beers on draft and most are local. They carry a few not-so-exciting beers from "micro" breweries like Ballast Point and Sierra Nevada. The local beer selection, I think, is pretty boring. They pretty much carry the same exact beers as farm house but in a smaller selection. Come to think of it, Monkey House has a more interesting selection -- they even carry Hill Farmstead - Edwards, a beer to die for. Also, the food has a lot to be desired. The poutine is just regular shoe string-ish fries that are borderline crispy with mediocre gravy and cheese on top. It's 10 bucks. I guess you could call it standard Burlington price but it's ridiculously pricey for what it is. I'd take Misery's Smoked Meat Poutine over this any day. It's 10x tastier, bigger portion, and most of all, same price. I guess one upside is that the whooping 11% meal/room tax is already included in the price. I feel like no tenant lasted a long time in this location. Hope this sticks around for a while. Good service though. read more

I have gone here quite frequently since it has opened and I have to say I am pleased! I really like the clean atmosphere that they are going for. It's very simple, but not stark. They have a great rotating selection of beers and a menu that changes pretty frequently as well. The prices for food are a bit high, but being in the food industry myself, I can understand that since they are using local products. Staff is friendly and super knowledgeable, especially in the beer department. My favorite cocktail is the G&T with their house made Quinine. Try it out! read more

Like some of the other reviews, this place would have gotten 4 or maybe 5 stars, but the Brooklyn-wannabe bartender copped too much cool guy attitude for me. When we arrived our first bartender, wearing a Toronado-SF hoodie, was genuinely a cool guy who wanted to talk beer, unfortunately for us, we got stuck with Joe Cool for the rest of the night. The good: excellent beer selection from the 802 and afar. The fries were some of the best I've had, and the pork belly was amazing. The local cheese selection was solid, but the Banh Mi, was lacking. It needed some spice and there was no Sirachi sauce to be found in the house. The burger was above average and the smoked bluefish pâté was as food as anything you'd find in BKLN. The decor was great, the music top notch, the service, not so much. I don't live in VT, but have relatives here, so I'll give it another try next time. read more

I don't understand the lofty price point on the 12 ounce pours here. Sure, if you've got a 2XIPA or Imperial Stout on tap, I can understand a smaller pour due to the alcohol content, but $7 for a Stone IPA? That equates to an $8.75 of decent, but not particularly rare or fantastic beer. For comparison's sake: Vermont Tap House in Williston pours pints of Founders' Breakfast Stout and Ballast Point Sculpin... Anyway, Mule Bar is a nice addition to Winooski; definitely the best tap selection in town. I just wish they'd ratchet down their prices a little bit, otherwise it's a bit out of my range to become a regular. read more

Bartender Paul is great. Good beers on tap. Lost Nation Gose is always available--tart wheat with sea salt and coriander. My favorite. Frequently have various Hill Farmsteads on tap. The decor has a Scandinavian vibe, largely blonde wood. A refreshing change from the dark wood/lodge/subway tile look that has been so pervasive in recent years. I often come to sit at the bar and watch the Celtics lose. A good place to watch a game (on mute) but it definitely isn't a sports bar. Have also brought friends to sit at tables and chat. A great neighborhood place and worth the trip to Winooski if you aren't local. read more

This place makes my week. I usually stop in on Thursday's or Friday's after work before I head home (as I live right around the corner). Awesome atmosphere, very knowledgeable bartenders (these guys know their beer) and the food is fantastic. Beer menu is constantly updated and I check Facebook on a regular basis to see what is on tap. They also have some cool events. I have grown tired of Burlington's bar scene (being a UVM grad) and this place is very refreshing. It's also fun to sit outside in the Spring, Summer and Fall -- enjoy a beer and chill out. It's my new place. Great staff, great beer, great service and good vibes. Also, food is all local. Lots of local and organic options. Try the fries with Old Bay seasoning on it. I'm a big fan of mule bar. I love the vibe. Its like a down-to-earth version of the farmhouse bar. Still classy, with relatively inventive drinks, and a fantastic rotating beer selection for smallish bar. They price their items to come up to exact dollar amounts so its really nice not to worry about change and cents. They also have a great mussels deal. Very Wednesday, its 10 dollars for a Heady Topper and an order of mussels. The Head Topper is normally 7 dollars, so you're basically get an order of mussels for 3 dollars. The mussels preparation changes on the chef's whim and its a nice mix. I've had it with a thicker broth and bacon, and i've had it with a thinner sauce and andouille sausage. Be aware that the mussels might contain pork for those that don't consume pork. Definitely one of my preferred bars in the Burlington area. I come atleast once a week and so should you! read more

We walked here from our Air B and B. Lots of outdoor seating but we sat inside. You order at the bar and they bring you your order. I had the smash burger it was good but the fries were the best. My daughter had the chicken sandwich and said it was one of the best. Lightly breaded but still moist. Friendly fun crowd. read more

I approached Mule Bar with skepticism (I forget why...maybe someone whose opinion I do not particularly covet expressed a lot of enthusiasm?), but I have been converted into a devotee. The food is surprisingly good! It isn't even your normal, greasy-salty-and-deliciously-heavy bar food, it is definitely an attempt at elevated bar cuisine that is usually successful. I was in London recently and it actually reminded me a lot of some of their more bourgeois pubs--lots of dark wood, flickering candles, hot fried food and curt, but professional, bartenders. The crowd (as of now, it is still a young restaurant) is comprised of business travelers staying at the nearby hotel, mid-twenty something friend groups, and the occasional artsy types on a date. The din is generally very subdued. Oh, and on a funny note there seems to be a VERY drunk, probably homeless man that camps out near by and ostentatiously presses his face up against the window glass until they tell him to leave or ventures in and, teetering, demands a drink. I've witnessed this several times and the staff are polite but firm. I've been out of the country and haven't visited in a while so I wonder if it is still a ritual occurrence... Anyway, I'm kind of (selfishly) sad that their business has picked up a lot, because it was pretty wonderful to get the bartender's full attention and not have to aggressively table-hunt. The only complaint I have ever voiced about the establishment (and it is probably more of an observation) is that they could stock more strong IPAs...but that is a personal preference. We're not all hop heads. read more

The place is small but not cramped, has outside seating and a great beer selection. Three Penny Taproom was a favorite spot for the two years I lived in Montpelier and I've long wished the guys behind TPT and Mad Taco would head north. My fiancee and I biked up to Winooski on their third day open and Mule Bar did not disappoint. Could tell they were still settling in, but were unsurprisingly already busy. One of the owners checked in and chatted with us more than once, both the bartender and server were attentive, and the chef delivered our food with a big old cheesin' smile. Really nice selection of craft beers (many we had never seen before) and the menu was seriously drool worthy. We were between meals but could not pass up the poutine: a reasonable sized serving of pretty solid fries smothered in very tasty sage gravy with just the right amount of cheese curds. No nonsense...just delicious. Cannot wait to try more of the offerings. I do hope they consider adding at least the style of the beers to the chalkboard (it was just the name, brewery and ABV) like at TPT to make ordering a bit easier. I love this bar. Can get crowded on Fridays and Saturdays but it's a nice place. Water in a corner, so you don't have to ask. The jack rose cocktail is amazing - apple brandy, lemon, lime, and house grenadine. Nice bartenders. Very much recommended. I always get excellent service. Can't ask for more. read more

Loved the burger and fries, cannot wait to get back to have another one! The burger would get 5 stars, if I was only rating it... However, I have not received good customer service here. I have never had anyone ever check on you after you get your food (lucky it has been great), but it seems more of a self service place, with tables. I am not even sure if there is really table service at all. It took us a bit to get the bartenders attention and it was not the friendliness encounter. So, if you want great beer and a burger, come here - but if you are looking for sit-down and service, it is not the perfect place. P.S. they did not have any type of hot sauce at all (or at least no one brought us any after we asked ;)! read more

No slaw like the meat eaters in our group got on theirs. This was some lazy taco mang. Staff was ok, you had to have some initiative to get the ball rolling. I went solo and sat at the bar because I read they had a "Heady Topper" deal on Wednesdays and I hadn't tried it yet on my visit to Vermont. The deal was $10 for a can and a serving of mussels, which was a good deal because the beer goes for $7 by itself. I also got the American Girl burger which has cheddar and bacon (which they butcher and cure themselves said the chef). I expected high quality because of the price at $14, but I really was blown away by how great this burger was. Usually I like sauce or ketchup (which they also make in house), but this burger was perfect as is. The meat was seasoned perfectly and surprisingly flavorful and the bacon was thick cut (more like pork belly) and just amazing. I'm not a huge mussels fan typically but I really enjoyed their mussels. Large portion, full of flavor and delicious garlicky broth that I sopped up with the grilled buttered thick crusty bread that came with it. I asked for more of this bread to get every last bit of the liquid. I had to give compliments to the chef who was out saying hi to customers and he was charming and friendly. He sent me out a cheddar fritter just because, which I appreciated and makes me want to go back and try their BBQ burger that this fritter comes on. The bar staff was friendly and attentive but gave distance and was low key. They let me hang out on my laptop for a while after I ate which was very accomodating. Overall I'm critical of restaurants/bars and food especially, but I just had to write a review for this little bar in Winooski because they far exceeded my expectations and that happens so rarely. read more

Heard great things about this place with respect to craft beer and food, so had to check it out when I was in the Burlington area, and I wasn't disappointed. When I visited, there were three Hill Farmstead beers on tap (Abner, Susan and Edward) and all were reasonably priced for the size of the glasses I got. The bartender was friendly and knowledgeable and let me sample pretty much all of the 16 or so beers that they offered. No flights, but depending on the beer, they will give you a half serving if you request it. Everything tasted fresh. Their menu changes daily, but there are a few constants (the Mule Bar Burger, Veggie burger, fries). Their kitchen technically opens at 3pm, but sometimes they will open earlier than that, depending on how quickly their chefs can get ready. The burger I had was good and while it's a little bit on the spendy side, I think the bar itself is worth it for the selection of craft beer. read more

He was VERY inattentive, uninterested in waiting on me and once served, never followed up to see if I needed anything else.
