Dr mullins is the most incompetent moron of a podiatrist you will ever encounter. First when he performed my surgery he looked like he was under the influence of alcohol. He was acting very strange and looked half asleep. Not only that he permanently ruined my big toe. I'm far worse then I was before surgery. His ass will be sued in the near future don't go to him if you want to walk normal ever again. read more

Went to see Dr. Mullens for concerns of having residual glass in my foot from cleaning broken glass baby bottle over a year ago. I went in and had bilateral foot X-rays done. His resident scraped the spot where I had pain and said she couldn't see anything and Dr. Mullens said I have corn. 3 months later I get a bill of $650 from my insurance for callus trimming, not covered by insurance as it's "cosmetic" contacted Stanford and tried to have them update my medical record as "corn trimming" was not what I went in for. I'm told to make payment arrangements with billing. I can pay for the bill, but I don't want to because this is an absolutely ridiculous amount given that I have great insurance which would cost less had I gone in for a surgical appointment. Be careful when going to Stanford healthcare for appointments. I changed my providers to PAMF after this incident. read more

I was referred to Dr. Mullens through my primary doctor for foot pain. Upon meeting him I was extremely impressed by his engaging manner. His entire focus is on you, the patient, the entire time and he really listens to your complaint. Immediately he ordered an ultrasound and an x-ray and those were done in house. When those garnered no results he ordered an MRI. I brought the disc from the MRI facility and he diagnosed me with plantar fasciitis. It was so easy. After a detailed report, he personally made cast impressions of my feet, not handing that task off to an associate as I would have assumed. It was extremely impressive. If you were lucky enough to have him as your podiatry physician you will be in excellent hands. I was also told by one of his staff that his father was also a physician so it runs in the family. He has a winning smile, a humble and humorous personality. read more

I went to Dr Mullens from another doctor's referral. The most recent visit was for planter fasciitis. I found out about the shock wave treatment which will provide faster recovery so I called Stanford Health. The receptionist told me Dr Elizabeth Reilly is the only doctor which does the shock wave treatment. When I asked to schedule an appointment, they wanted me to see Dr Mullens before scheduling the treatment. When I see Dr Mullens, he said he can do the shock wave therapy but wanted me to pay $600 in advance for three treatments because insurance will not pay for them. After the first treatment his nurse walked me to schedule the rest of the treatments and to insure payment before I leave as if I am running off without paying them. I find out later that Stanford Health cannot issue me a receipt and describe the type of treatment. If I have to pay for the treatment out of my own pocket, I certainly want a receipt with the description of treatment from Stanford Health for tax documentation. I called the billing office for such statement and all I can get is a statement showing running balance of my visits. Nowhere can I see the description of the three treatment service and the $600 payment. Stanford Health has to improve on providing patients with statement showing date of service, type of treatment detail and payment from insurance or patient. Patients do not want a statement showing summary of running total. I finished my three treatment which it only lasted 5 minutes each time. My foot is still in pain after the three treatments. I did some research from the shockwave treatment and there is a video showing how the shock wave therapy is being administered. It is no where near what Dr Mullens did to my heel. Dr Mullens should care more about the well being of his patient and be honest by saying he is not familiar with the procedure/treatment would help. He only cares about payments in advance instead of the final results. read more

Was put on hold for over 5 minutes, she picked up, I asked for the next available appointment and she put me on hold for another 5 minutes before I hung up. This is the 3rd time I called. First two times, it went to an answering service. He's probably a good Dr. but his front desk/receptionist is losing him business. After months of foot pain, I finally gave in and called my doctor for a recommendation on a podiatrist... they recommended that I call Dr. Mullens, so I did. Before even seeing Dr. Mullens for the first time, I was so impressed when I arrived for my appointment and was seen ON TIME! This was not a one time occurrence as both offices I have seen him at (San Francisco and RWC) run on time. Dr. Mullens listened carefully to how I described my foot pain, made some recommendations, gave me a toe spacer since I was having pain in my toes, and asked me to come back in a few weeks to see if the pain had subsided. Though the pain was less after Dr. Mullens' initial recommendation, it did not go away. On my second visit, he recommended minor surgery to alleviate the pain completely. He was patient with ALL of my questions (I had a lot) and ultimately when I decided not to have surgery, gave some other options to help manage the pain. I went home, discussed with my husband, and changed my mind to have the surgery. I couldn't be more pleased with that decision. I had the surgery, and I rested at home for a few weeks. Here I am, three months later, I have no foot pain at all. I even went skiing this past weekend after initially thinking I wouldn't be hitting the slopes this year! I highly recommend Dr. Mullens - he put up with my incessant questions, he did an excellent job with the surgery, and he was extremely jovial throughout the entire process! read more

Yelp! is a help in finding the right doctor. But even more reassuring are the recommendations from other doctors. He has earned the respect of those professionals -- as well as demanding patients like me. For foot issues and injuries, here are my three reasons why I recommend him to you: 1) A persistent plantar wart I had picked up barefooted at my gym's sauna was not going away. My general practice physician and two different dermatologists, after many months, finally gave up and recommend Dr. Mullens. He understood how these "bad boys" do not just go away, especially in older adults. Jonah was gentle with his precision handling a scalpel and thorough in explaining the steps in my treatment protocol. He succeeded in getting me back to pain-free walking--and martial arts. 2) A Jiu-Jitsu ankle injury: I managed to break an ankle (fractured fibula) so I again needed an experienced podiatrist. (He did not even make fun of my late-in-life pursuit of happiness through Jiu-Jitsu.) 3) It takes a team; Dr. Mullens has that at S.O.A.R. and at the Surgery Center in Burlingame. Dr. Jonah Mullens was articulate, friendly, and patient. He diagnosed my foot problem, fixed the problem on the spot, gave me his email address (without me asking) and suggested that I contact him in two weeks to give him an update. When I emailed him after two weeks, he replied within a few hours and told me that my foot was healing as he expected. A few days later, as he predicted, my foot healed entirely. Just a perfect doctor. Not many of these around. Six stars! I saw Dr. Mullen at SOAR. He moved here from Pacific Foot and Ankle Institute some time ago, I think. The previous reviewer Robert S. might have called an out of date number. Even if it had been the correct number, one star to a doctor that he had never seen is probably not fair. I was referred to Dr. Mullens for a really painful and bothersome toe issue. Dr. Mullens not only took great care of the issue, his bedside manner and professional attitude made the difference. My issue required several visits, and the front counter staff as well as the nurses and other doctors were all knowledgeable and pleasant to deal with. Only once was my appointment delayed, and that was due to a previous patient requiring extra attention. Other than that, they were quick and courteous and on time. Thankfully the pain is gone and the issue has been resolved, but if something else comes up in that area, I'll definitely be requesting Dr. Mullens again! Highly recommend! read more

I've been in to see Dr Jonah Mullens twice to remove in-grown toe-nails (pesky little things), and he's been great for my feet. He took his time with me, answering questions I had, and going into detail about the procedure. Sounds like this procedure is very standard for podiatrists (that means they do it all the time), so it meant even more that he didn't just roll through the motions as quickly as possible. It's always nice to have a doctor willing to explain what he/she is doing during the operation, and pointing out things to be careful of during recovery. After my first op, I actually had a bit of a scare, as I thought one of my toes had gotten infected (my bad of course....as I wasn't careful for a few days). I was able to get Dr. Mullens on the phone, which says a lot. Turns out I just needed another day, and all healed up great. Best of all, my feet don't hurt anymore when I squeeze them into my climbing shoes!!! Well...not anymore than they're suppose to ;-) read more

I have been a patient at SOAR for a long time but never a patient of Dr. Mullens until now. I tore my achilles and was referred by the office to Dr. Mullens. Dr. Mullens is very nice guy, he took the time to listen and took time to explain the options to me. I have decided to have surgery to repair this based on his advice. We will see how it goes but so far I am very impressed with Dr. Mullens' professionalism and knowledge. Took my appointment at the last minute, didn't seem rushed, clearly explained everything. I'm looking forward to a successful recovery. Update 11 months later: Thanks to Dr. Mullens, I was back to walk somewhat normally within a few months. It has now been 11 months and I fell 98%. Dr Mullens saved my life. OK, my FOOT, first...and since I can walk again, with no pain or limping, I can now "Suddenly" get back to enjoying SF as it should be. So---that's basciaclly my life...which he saved. If you get my drift. We consulted in Jan; he said "Id suggest surgery....but have not worked w/ you long enough" So we decide phys therapy, accupuncture etc. Guess what ==by April, NO change. Zero. So I say :Lets go surgery One my smarter decisions in my recent life. It was a breeze. His staff set it all up. Took all of 2 hours, and I'm back at home, sucking down the vicodine and could instinctively tell the foot was going to be better (it hurt, but not in same place, and was not a jagged pain). Oh BTW---did not pay a CENT!!!! Insurance covers it all. Sure enough, surgery on June 23, and here is is Oct 26 or so; WELL on road to revodvery. Glad i ddin'nt waint LONGER!!! Dr. Mullens himself can actually carry on a conversation (about other than medical stuff), wears cool shoes, dresses snappy, goes to Burning Man on reg baisis, and is about the further from a "Boring foot doc" as you'll ever get. I've played sports my whole life and after 4 years of college soccer my feet were killing me. I had this terrible pain in the arch area that hurt worst right after a game or practice. I went to see Dr. Jonah Mullens and he patiently listened to my description of my pain and knew immediately what it was. He said I had Plantar Fasciitis and that he could provide me with a custom orthotic that would likely help with my pain. Well it's been two months now and I can't tell you how great my feet feel! I did not reach a "live" person, but was connected to a voice mail recording. I left my name and number (twice) and expected a return phone call as the recording stated. Two weeks later I still have not received a response. If the office is so busy they cannot take a call, it is certainly acceptable to have an automated system take a message and get back to me. I went to Dr Jonah Mullens to have an ingrown toe nail removed I was freaking out and he re assured me that it was going to be okay and it would not hurt. Sure enough he is so gentle I didn't feel any pain what so ever. The needle to numb my toe hurt a bit just a pinch but not nearly as bad as I thought and when he had to remove the nail I couldn't feel a thing. Truly the only doctor I would go to again extremely nice and friendly and makes jokes to lighten the mood so it would distract me from what he was doing. Without a doubt 5 stars. Top reasons: -Knowledgeable but not "doctor condescending" - fully explained things to me and legitimately listened to my dumb questions -Punctual. My first appointment actually started 5 min. early! Wow. -Likeable. Sounds frivolous but for someone that stuck sharp objects in my foot, it's important he can carry on a conversation. Finally, Dr. Mullens USED to use receptionists that simply wouldn't return phone calls - really took away from his service. I made some simple suggestions to him and explained my frustration. I am extremely happy and satisfied with my care from Dr Mullens at SOAR. After years of foot pain, 1 minor/1 not sooner surgeries later-100% better, NO pain when I walk! Dr Mullens and his staff were able to expedite internal referrals quickly. I have been treated great from other physicians on the practice as well as from the medical assistant and the cast room guys. They run relatively well on time, especially compared to other physician offices. The ancillary offices I was referred to have been good as well and coming as a SOAR patient I was scheduled quickly and efficiently. I would refer to Dr Mullens for any foot issues. After seeing a different podiatrist for over a year, I switched to Dr. Mullens (based on recommendations). He helped me with what was a partial tear of the plantar fascia. I made the decision to have surgery (after trying all non-surgical options) and am pain free now (am one month post surgery). Dr. Mullens was patient with me, discussed the various options with me and, most importantly, performed a successful surgery. As others mention, he is genuinely concerned about his patients and also gave me his email so I could ask him questions throughout my recovery.
