We stumbled upon this cheese shop when trying to go somewhere else when we were coming back from up north. The place was packed and I can see why .... there was an abundance of different cheeses, and the Mullins brand were marked at such great prices. There was cheese curds, blocks of cheese, shredded cheese, Sprinkle cheese and more. No cheese shop in Wisconsin would be complete without a place to order your own fried cheese cards. It was near 100° out and fried cheese was the last thing on my mind but when in Rome. they were lightly battered and worth it. Over great cheese and new products in there retail store. But the cheese curds are not what they used to be in years past. They are now in more of a block cut forms vs a normal cheese curds clump. Also seem to be more prepackaged and on the shelf for a while vs being bagged fresh that day. Still good but not as good as they were, or what you can get from other cheese factories that are doing less volume. read more

We waited 30min for food, had to go up and ask about our food. Still took them additional time to figure out where our food was after they told us we already got it. This is the 2nd bad experience. I have been stopping at Mullins Cheese for at least the last 20 years. It's a deer camp tradition. I am happy to see an independent family run business grow and flourish. I am so disappointed that it came at the cost of quality. Their curds used to be hand crafted and warm. Now they are machine made and perfectly uniform. This was the last time I will shop there. Stopped here twice on our way up north and again on the way back south. It was my first time trying cheese whips, and curds (not the fried ones). They were both a nice little snack to munch on by the lake. Both the curds (not the fried ones) and whips were tasty and easy to serve. Little to no preparation was required. You get such agreat bang for your buck with the prices and options here, SOO MANY FLAVORS, smoked gouda, garlic jack, fries (pizza?) priced at deals you can't beat anywhere else. One pound for a bit less than $5! Makes great gifts for people nearby and far away. Their fresh cheese curds are a nice treat too, and are so fresh you can feel them squeak as you bite in. The Mullins Cheese Outlet is just that, a cheese factory outlet, tucked back in a far corner of the factory and off the main road a bit. (Follow the signs, it's easy to find.) The Mullins factory is enormous and a new wing was under construction when I was there, making it even larger. The factory and outlet is in the village of Knowlton, nestled on the shore of Lake Du Bay in Portage County. It's a hop, skip and a gelandesprung off I-39 at exit 175 between Stevens Point and Mosinee, or between Mosinee and Stevens Point if you happen to be going south on I-39. Take Wisc 34 toward Wisconsin Rapids a couple of blocks then turn south (left) on County DB. Mullins is just inside the unicorporated edge of Knowlton. Pass the factory and turn right at the sign. The store is around back, just past the S curve. Inside, you'll find an enormous cooler filled with a wide variety of cheeses that Mullins makes along with gift boxes and a selection of meats for snacking or picnicking. In a chest cooler, you'll find more cheese, in other chest coolers you'll find summer sausages and other snack meats. Yet another chest cooler is full of cheese spreads, some made with Mullins cheeses. There's also cheese curds, cheeses molded in the shape of beer mugs (with a frosty head) football players (in green and gold, of course) and various other shapes. There's a gift area with the requisite t-shirts, refrigerator magnets, coffee mugs and the usual suspects. At the counter, there's a wide variety of snacky stuff, beverages, fudge and even gourmet sodas (pop!) from Stevens Point. There's something for every cheese lover here (except Limburger. Or maybe I just didn't see it.) Give Mullins a visit next time you're in Central Wisconsin. read more

I occasionally get the urge and travel about 2,000 miles to come here. Well not really but whenever I am in central Wisconsin I make sure tp stop by Mullins. On my last visit, I got the very fresh white cheddar curds with extreme squeak! There is a great variety of cheese and meats at the shop and the location is just a couple of minutes off the freeway. You have to drive around the factory to get to the store, but it is well marked. I highly recommend checking it out. read more

The happenstance for my visit here was random. Coming back from a fishing trip, we noticed a sign for cheese and said, "we need to check this out". I am constantly seeking out the hard cheese of Italy on my travels which are unavailable in quality and quantity here in Northwest Montana. I was directed to Mullins Cheese Inc. by a group of coworkers. When asked what two things does this local area of Wisconsin do unequally well, they said maple syrup and Mullins Cheese. So off I went... The retail shop is around back. If you're coming in from the highway, cut right through the main parking area of the facility and head to the back. Look for the signs. Once around the corner it becomes clear. The shop offers an array of locally made items, from cheeses to some touristy items. The staff will greet you with their hair nets and latex gloves from working in the factory section of the plant. You can see right into the manufacturing section from the store. Pretty neat. But the best part for the consumer is a wide array of cheeses for sale, all very reasonably priced. If you are from out of town and looking for something to bring home, this is a must see. It is only 10 minutes south of the airport and right off the highway. Not having been familiar with squeaky cheese, I loaded up with a few sacks of freshly made curds. I now understand why they call it squeaky cheese. Haha very funny. Well even four days later the squeak remained, albeit a bit less for those back home. Now that i have eaten through the block of 10 year old cheddar, I see they don't do mail-order. Just great... read more
