As stated, this facility does not have the finances/funds that the Humane Society does. It takes all animals. Staff and volunteers work very hard to make things work with what they have. Maybe some attention should be shared with the people who give up these animals. It's an endless stream at the door. There is a staffing storage here as everywhere else. These guys were beyond helpful and prompt in their service. My friends and I found a bat on the ground outside the outlets and they were there in less than 30 minutes, gave us instructions to care for the bat in the meantime, and assured us the little guy would be ok. Our dogs were supposed to be held in quarantine at Multnomah County Animal Services (MCAS) from September 22nd to October 1st. When MCAS hadn't returned our dogs to us by October 7th, we called Duckler and retained him that very same day. He wrote a letter to MCAS announcing his representation of us in this case and appealed all six of the Notices of Infraction (NOIs) we were issued on September 22nd. Before retaining Duckler, we had placed no fewer than 100 phone calls in to Director Sadler and Supervisor Farrell at MCAS demanding an explanation for why they were holding our dogs well passed the quarantine deadline and ignoring all of our calls. After Duckler joined us, we received the dogs back on October 15th, along with, what we found out months later, a very disturbing surprise. Nine months later (7/7/21), after our landlord removed bamboo from the surrounding inner fence line of our MCAS-approved secure backyard, the fence posts became unstable and our dogs managed to spill into the neighbor's enclosed backyard. Though not hurt and knowing exactly who owned the dogs, she called MCAS anyway. When we arrived home just 30 minutes later, we found out from neighbors that MCAS had detained the dogs once again. When we rushed to MCAS to find out what happened, we were given two more NOIs. But this time, the NOIs read that the director would be moving to suspend ownership of both dogs. With some money left in trust with Duckler from the first round with MCAS, we called to re-activate him on our case. It turned out that the six NOIs that were issued to us on September 22, 2020 (the ones we appealed and were never given a hearing date to dispute) were dismissed in favor of a new set of six NOIs that now read, "any further violations will result in the director suspending ownership of this animal". We were given these in a stack of redemption papers on October 15, 2020, which MCAS told us were copies of the originals from the September 22nd quarantine. Sound fair to you? Read on, it gets worse. The fence incident of July 7th kicked MCAS into high gear, so we did the same. We tried to get updates on the condition of our dogs from MCAS and received nothing in return. Because we had an attorney, they couldn't give us updates on our dogs at all. Not even whether they were alive or dead. They were in protective custody is all that they would tell us. Months passed and we were no closer to a resolution than we were when all of this started. Note: Our dogs are not being kept in the main area of MCAS where the "adoptables" get treats, frisbees, toys, walks, music, etc. They are in solitary. Pumped full of anti-psychotics and anti-anxiety drugs with no human contact save for a vet who drops by to pretend to look in on them every few days. Being treated like convicted criminals when their case hasn't even been heard on appeal yet. MCAS schedules their hearings on their schedule, not anyone else's, Duckler would tell us. The County Senior Attorney isn't returning his emails and he doesn't appear to have any other moves, but we just had to be patient. He was doing all that he could. Doing all that he could amounted to drafting a letter to MCAS stating that he was once again representing us in the fence matter and submitting our formal appeal of the new NOIs that we were just issued within the same letter. Then finally, during the first week of November, our hearing for the alleged incidents of September, 2020 is set for November 17th. Over 4 months after the fence incident occurred and our dogs were detained. But reading over the hearing notice carefully revealed that MCAS was combining the September incidents (Level 4 behavior classification) and the fence incident (failure to comply) into one hearing. You don't need to practice law to see that the second citation (failure to comply) presumes the outcome of the first hearing which hasn't been heard yet. If that doesn't telegraph a rigged system, I don't know what does. And now we're going against MCAS, the bully of bullies, alone with a less than 7% chance of emerging victorious. They are dragging their feet with our requests for discovery controlling the "public" information that we are requesting for trial. It's dirty pool from the very top at Sadler's desk all the way down to Supervisor Farrell's cubicle. They don't care about your animals, they only want to bend the rules to their favor to keep you quiet and maintain dominance. Your thinly veiled threats fall on deaf ears over here, we won't stop until you're out. read more

My spouse and I were interested in adopting a rescue dog and set our sights on a dog at this shelter. The employees were very helpful. We met the dog, decided to adopt him, and were spoken to in detail with regard to care and future plans. They were professional and comprehensive. Within the first week of having him in our house, we had a couple of questions. There was always someone available and qualified to address our concerns. Responses were accurate. We have adopted twice from MCAS. Our most recent adoption was just a few weeks ago. All of the staff that we worked with were so friendly and great to us. We initially made the trip in to meet a specific dog, that was available on the website, but found out that dog was in the process of leaving with a family. We then decided to meet another available pup and immediately loved her! She appeared clean, well feed, and well cared for during her stay at MCSH. Her kennel was clean when we did our walk through and she wagged her tail when the staff appeared. While waiting to meet with the counselor for adoption I walked through the facility just to check out some other animals. All habitats appeared clean and the animals in great conditions. I know these type facilities don't have the money and volunteers like the large humane societies have but this place appears to be pretty great. I even got to meet a chicken a woman was adopting! I thinks it's great they take in all types of homeless animals! Please make this a place to consider when adopting a new family member. Our girl is already amazing and doing so great. I know there will be other great ones just waiting for someone to choose them and take them home. read more

I am really conflicted about how many stars to give them. I know they do great and hard work dealing, rescuing, and managing animals. It's a thankless job that's done away from the public eye, for the most part. The pay is probably not that great either. However, I have been dealing with the neighbors nuisance dogs for the last 2 and 1/2 years. The dogs are outrageous, and they Park day and night. They wake us up even though I wear earplugs at night. I called immediately and requested that they send someone to try and catch the 2 very large dogs that were still running around on the next street. The Multnomah County Animal Services & Shelter is the central shelter of the county, where almost all the stay cats are taken. They are on the West side of Troutdale, be sure to see their map on the official web site. It's an out of the way place. You can bus via Tri Met, close to the shelter. The shelter is technically behind the Troutdale Motel 6, but you will need map help to find it. We had been looking for our lost cat, when we arrived, one of their staff people immediately showed us how to look for our cat at the shelter. They've got bulletin boards showing all the newly found cats, often a photo is included. If you see a cat that might be yours, they can help you locate it. Many of the cats are there on site. There is also a Cattery where you can see some very beautiful cats, happy in their cages, listening to relaxing jazz music! This would be an excellent place to get a cool cat. You should also fill out a Lost Pet card and leave that with shelter, it's also available to complete on their website. You can also post a flyer (standard paper size) in their lost cats book, a photo really helps if possible. Their Lost Cat literature will tell you about various other places to list your missing pet, such as CraigsList (the lost and found area) and the Dove Lewis lost and found information at dovelewis.org. While on the Multnomah County Animal Services website, be sure to check the videos of their lost pet intake kennels. That's a quick way to see most of the cats that have been recently rescued. However it is not a substitute for going to the kennels every 3 business days. Between visiting and using their regular video, you can watch for your pet. After several visits to the shelter, our cat Newman is still missing. We lost him near Glisan and NE 91st Avenue on 3/10 and we can not find him. It's great to know that this Multnomah County Animal Services staff is here to help during the sad process of looking for your lost pet. The staff has been very helpful and the shelter is well maintained. You can tell they're working on a tight budget and could use more donations and more budget. Don't forget, their website is a great resource for helping find your pet, especially the "Lost Cat Behavior Tip Sheet," and the regularly updated video of the shelter's newly arriving lost pets. read more

They get to say, sorry, we are full today, or that animal doesn't fit our criteria, or we have to many boys, Vs girls. MCAS has no choice but to take any and all. That's why it can be crowed and over whelming when going into there.. I found that volunteering somewhere else didn't make one but of difference! The real difference is being a responsible pet owner, spaying/neutering your animals, making a life commitment to the owns you gather, being that voice to other pet owners, and also adopting, and fostering!! Open your home to fosters if you really want to make a difference, that way these animals are adoptable, aren't getting sick and stressed out, and maybe acting out.. MCAS, has proven to me that every animal counts!! & they all care!! I have a medical foster that couldn't walk, she had Neuro issues from being hit by a car, her body wasn't working correctly. She showed the will to live, by scooting to her litter box to potty. They put her into foster and gave her the chance to get better. I had to syringe fed her for the first 2 weeks, because her senses were off.. She is now able to walk and do Normal things like every other kitty. We were looking for a dog in 2017, and was paired up with a German Shepherd/Pointer Hound mix. The volunteer who brought the dog to us did not feel comfortable handling this dog. After taking the dog home, it was discovered the description they gave us was completely different than what we experienced. Unfortunately this dog was not the best pick for us and we did have to give her back, hoping Multnomah County Animal Services would be able to rehome her to someone that would be able to focus on the behavioral issues that were not mentioned to us. It seems to me the staff and volunteers do care about these animals and want them to go to good homes, I think that the volunteers need more training. read more

Here is the thing. I went to The Cat Adoption Team places, went to the Oregon Humane Society, checked out some Petco's or Petsmarts. I heard that the Multnomah County Animal Shelter was the most hard up, and it is. It's depressing. It's not nearly as nice as the other shelters, but I get the feeling they don't get nearly as much funding. With that being said, the staff was outstanding, the cat's seemed really taken care of, and most importantly we got a 5 year old long haired Tabby (Winnie) for $15 and with a cat food donation. She was spayed, had all her shots, came with a micro chip and license, and a free first vet visit. The volunteers do a wonderful job and it was the best $15 dollars I have ever spent. She is a wonderful cat and a great match. I know it's not the ritziest shelter, but cats and dogs don't get a choice as to where they end up. read more

They have lost multiple pets without consequence. My dog passed last week and her vet MT. Scott Animal Clinic in Se Portland (I DO NOT recommend their services) said they go through Multnoma country animal services to pick up the pets from the clinic to be taken for general cremation. My dog was tagged for private cremation meaning MCAS should NOT have taken her and I should have gotten her ashes back. Due to the negligent and careless officers employed by MCAS I will not be getting my dog of 14 years back. From my understanding this has happened to others before. Before I was even made aware of this situation she was already cremated and they had already spread her ashes somewhere is Washington without my consent. The manger at Mt. Scott animal clinic has blamed this situation entirely on the officers and the training provide by MCAS officials stating MCAS officers are overly tired and sometimes are made to work 12 or more hours a day and that is why the mistake was made. I've tried to reach out to MCAS and left voice mails asking to be called back regarding this inexcusable egregious mistake and no one has called me back or answered my calls. read more

After thinking of getting a dog for some time, hubby and I looked at dogs online and then went in to meet some. We walked in, and I couldn't stop crying. Like Alena's review, it is definitely hard up. Cold floors, visibly upset dogs, including a 10 year old chihuahua that was not only shaking, but CRINGING every time a dog would bark, which was constantly. As the past owner of a one eyed, toothless chihuahua from this same shelter, I cried. The entire time I was in this shelter. Yet if I only got one dog, even I couldn't handle taking a 10 year old one. Now, I'm considering going back to save it... if it's not too late. I wish I could save them all. Anyway, I appreciate that this place is re-homing animals, I plan on donating to them . They were giving away dogs for only $25 but there was a long waiting process, which is why we ended up going elsewhere, and the fact that the dog we wanted already had a list of people that wanted her. In the end we went to Southwest Washington Humane Society, where the dogs had beds, more space and it didn't seem nearly as depressing-but that makes it more depressing. That is where we found our now spoiled rotten 2 1/2 year old leg-licking, blanket burrowing nerd dog that we're not sure how we ever lived without. I hope that my donations, and others can help the Multnomah County Animal Shelter out, because it needs it. The animals need it. read more

It's true that MCAS isn't as ritzy as OHS--but hey, they're a public agency, and they aren't getting the big donations OHS is I'm guessing. But that's not what you're paying for, is it? (And on the subject of paying....I want to point out that pets are more affordable from MCAS, because you're not paying for the building, but rather for their care.) I adopted both of my awesome kitties from MCAS, and could not be happier with the service I was provided, by hardworking volunteers who care deeply about finding these animals loving homes. I'm writing this review because, just today, I received a follow up call from them asking how the kitten I adopted 6 months ago was doing (she had some health issues). How's that for service? I recently adopted a 6-month-old kitten from this shelter and am very pleased! It's nothing fancy and the dog area can get a bit loud (they do offer ear plugs to use though, which is great) at times, but this place was where I found my dear Higgins (formerly known as Avery) and fell in love. We'd looked at the various PetCos and PetSmarts in the Portland area and the Oregon Humane Society, but this shelter had the most helpful staff/volunteers. There were a few bores, but for the most part everyone we talked to had a passion for animals (our interviewer, Cheryl, spent about an hour and a half talking with us!) and was more than willing to answer any questions we had. I have never owned a pet that didn't live in a tank, so I spent about a month visiting the shelters and much longer than that reading up on cat ownership. Things you can do at MCAS: 1) Peruse all the awesome dogs, cats and other small animals up for adoption. 2) Fall in love with the animal of your choice. 3) Take home a great animal that is fully licensed, microchipped, spayed/neutred and ready to love you forever. 5) Go back to the shelter and have them help you get re-united with your little ball of wonderfulness when it finds that one little hole in your fence and gets out. 4) Work with a great staff and group of volunteers that really care about finding the right animal for you and the right situation for each animal. We adopted our super great dog from MCAS in January. When we decided to foster dogs we went back to the shelter to offer our home to a dog needing a temporary home. The staff and volunteers we have worked with have been absolutely amazing. Their dedication to helping animals is infectious. We now volunteer working with dogs at the shelter and for outreach events in addition to fostering. If you are looking for a great pet or a great place to volunteer, I highly suggest a trip out to Troutdale to work with MCAS. It's true, MCAS is very, very old, and slightly depressing. However, I have gotten every animal I have ever owned from there, save two, and I have loved and adored every one of them. With the very small budget they earn and the rickety old place they have, they do absolutely outstanding. Despite it being small, cramped, and dimly lit, the place is practically spotless. They clean it regularly and are quick to act if a person notices a dog or kitty made a mess, which a few of the puppies on my last visit had done! One thing to note is that many of them do have kennel cough, a few of mine had it when I adopted them. It's practically impossible to wipe out completely and with the place being so small, it seems most of them get it. However, they know this and will give free medication and check-ups if your kitty or dog has it. Their prices are very reasonable. All the animals get full check-ups, vaccines, neuter/spay, and a microchip, and that's all included in your pet adoption fee. The cat I currently own was $50 in total, and I adore him to bits. My fiancee jokes that when he's not around, my cat is my boyfriend. The biggest reason that I adopt from here is simply because it's the most crowded and busiest, with the least amount of space. They need all the help they can get to take care of the animals, and they need all the adoptions they can too, as they are a tiny no-kill shelter! read more

To start off I'm only giving two stars bc of the sweet lady that helped me find the cat I had, in the animal area desk, going out of her way to help me find a baby. But besides that that was the only good thing about this shelter. I went in and got a kitten and paid $130 for her adoption, I knew she was very shy to begin with but I thought she'd do well with my other cat but they just didn't get along so I decided to take her back. Well they told me I had 2 weeks to bring her back for my refund and I have to make an appt and so I called several times the first week and NO ONE gave me any call back after multiple messages I had left. They literally waited until my 2 weeks were up to make an appt with there manager Amy. I told her the situation and she didn't care and she still scheduled me an appt after the fact. AMY told me I needed a appt to bring the cat back so I go in thinking I have an appt and she isn't even there and all I had to do was sign a paper. So basically I'm out $130, they lied to me and took the cat back. After this incident I'm NEVER returning and I'm letting all my followers and friends know how unprofessional this all was. If anyone's curious where to adopt go to OHS they really took care of me nicely after this whole ordeal. read more

I really like MultCoPets. We rescued two wonderful pit bulls from there and the process is very smooth and not overly expensive. I feel like they ask all the right questions to ensure the animal is going to an appropriate home. They also offer follow-up vet care and throw in a free collar, leash, and meds if needed. I knocked one star off because on one visit to see a dog someone 3 hours late for a hold was given a dog we had already picked. We had gone through the process of meeting and falling in love with the dog but right as we were going into the paperwork stage another family showed up that had placed a "hold" on the same dog. If they had not already been three hours late for their appointment MultCoPets would not even had shown us the dog but the staff said since the other party was late it would be "first come, first serve". This was not the case and we left very sad and feeling that we were treated very poorly. Despite this one bad experience I still consider this to be a far better option than OHS. read more

I read a review of this shelter recently by Alena C. who concluded: "I know it's not the ritziest shelter, but cats and dogs don't get a choice as to where they end up." It resonated. A lot. Although we only recently lost our boy Spike, I believe the best way to remember and honor a lost pet is to open my home to another one in need. The memories are less painful when the gaping hole left behind is slowly refilled with the joy of getting to know my next shelter dog. And that's all I'll ever have, all I'll ever want - shelter dogs, 5+ years old. Because they're cool. You skip all that puppy crap (literally), all those torn shoes, all that potty training, and you get right to the good stuff. A playful dog who is able to be calm and just be, who may already have decent manners, but who is open to learning all the new ways of happily existing in your home and following your rules. Sure they will require additional training. What dog doesn't? Training is an excellent way to further build and nurture a bond with your new dog. We found our recent addition at Multnomah County Animal Shelter, and I swear it was love at first sight. This is a county-run facility, and there is no mistaking that fact. While there is a capital campaign currently underway to raise funds to build a fantastic new facility (and I strongly urge anyone who cares at all about animals in need in our county to get onto their website and donate to the Shelter Dreams effort), it is definitely a concrete jungle built in a time when concrete block and chain link were the functional choice. It's loud (what shelter isn't?), and it's a little on the dark side. But you know what makes this place a lot brighter? A terrific staff and volunteer force who care for the animals, and it shows. When I arrived shortly after opening, everything had clearly been scrubbed down with disinfectant. Shelters by definition are not the cleanest environments, but they work hard here to keep it as clean as possible to try to reduce the spread of things like kennel cough or other things that like to hang out in such environments. They have meet and greet yards where you can get to know the animals a little better, away from the kennel runs and the excitement and bustle going on inside. People there know about the personality traits of the animals in their care, and can relay that information to you to help you find your best match. I urge anyone looking to adopt a family pet to check out the wonderful animals who come through the county shelter. While the environment here is not the warmest (yet), the people are, and the animals certainly appreciate your consideration. read more

After a frustrating day dealing with the Oregon Humane Society (see review) we decided to make the trek out here to troutdale. First of all, this place is not as far as I thought 10 min on I-84 and we were here. Don't let the troutdale address dissuade you. The facilities were sad especially contrasted with the palatial digs at the humane society but the animals looked well cared for and the staff extremely helpful. if you are looking for a cat this is where you need to go. There were 35 plus cats, including half a dozen kittens. We arrived at 11 am and left an hour and a half later with a microchipped, healthy 4 month old orange tabby kitten with a free vet office visit included. read more

I found a kitten that was in my front yard, cold and scared. He was infested with ear mites and fleas, but was very healthy. I put up signs, posted on craigslist and no one claimed him. I called several organizations to have the kitty get his shots and medical treatment and to get fixed. I was even told by a vet in my neighborhood that the proper thing to do is call the county. Multnomah Animal Services were the only people who picked up the phone, who were friendly, caring and helpful. Peg talked me through everything. I brought him in, and they took him in and gave him the works. Unfortunately he had to stay for 5 days (3 days legally to claim him). I was concerned that he would come back looking unhappy. When they handed him to me, the person said "he's acting like he didn't just have surgery". They gave me a name your own price special for adoption (usually kittens are 100 dollars to adopt, but I named my own price!). They gave me helpful tips on how to care for him, and supplied me with a microchip, free one year licensing, and lots of information (they even was honest and told me about the typical cold a cat could get while being in there). I had a bad day, and they definitely cheered me up due to their kindness and positive energy. My only complaint is, they deserve more people volunteering here! and a bigger facility. I didn't get to see where the animals stayed. But I know they are filled to the rim with cats and dogs (this isn't their fault by any means!). They have a high adoption success rate, and they are a NO KILL shelter. Oh and they have a kitty and dog cam online, how awesome is that?! A tax funded government agency that functions like a six headed monster with twelve hearts. There are a handful of good people working here along with too many others whom I would personally fire on the spot for unprofessional misconduct! We had intended on participating with this organization, but after two horrible experiences adopting pets we believe our money will be better spent elsewhere. Repeatedly we were transferred to the voicemail for persons who never returned our calls. We were deliberately misdirected and told to contact an administrator about our cats who was actually the guy in charge of dogs only and were completely ignored. When we brought in our last kitten that we adopted, the new tall guy at the front counter psychologically anchored on repeatedly telling us that we needed a vet, because we mentioned her tummy was mishaped. The kitten had a hernia that was later repaired, but the new guy sounded sociopathic towards animals. During that encounter the other guy at the front counter stepped in and took over to help us. We were also never notified in a timely manner about the results of a rabies quarantine and were therefore placed at risk of death. Lastly when we returned to adopted the second cat the female at the front counter became combative, because I didn't understand what she was asking us. She threw the paperwork at us, slung the door open and then spent the rest of her time telling her coworker about her family's bathroom habits. She acted like someone hanging out in a bar instead of doing her job in a non-threatening manner. We are reasonable and generous people who house, feed and look after stray and feral cats around our home. Someone must captain positive change at this facility. read more

I found an injured, hypothermic cat laying in the road near my house on Sunday afternoon. Thank goodness animal services will come out 24/7 pick up an injured animal and get it to a vet. I was scared to touch the injured cat, he looked pissed. They showed up about 20 minutes after I called. I was surprised to find a found cat ad already on Craigslist the very next day, super fast! I would go here any day over the OHS. They don't seem to be in it for money as much as OHS. There people are a lot nicer and there adoption fee's are more reasonable. If the goal is to help homeless pets to find new home then why do some places charge $375 for a very young puppy but for a 1year old puppy only $150 either way I feel it's a bit much. When I still have a life time of fee's and vet bills to pay and toys and so on.. If the money is to help other animals to the charge less but require a food donation to. I adopted my four-month-old kitten from MCAS two months ago. The process was fairly efficient for a county shelter ;) I worked in an open-door shelter (much bigger than this one) and can very confidently state that this shelter is a fabulously hopeful place to land as an animal. Fantastic people, volunteers, and foster network. Don't hesitate to adopt here. My kitten is the first kitten I've ever encountered with no URI issues. And he was processed through an animal shelter...Impossible! Their foster volunteers make this happen so animals who will not thrive at the shelter do not have to be at the shelter. Someone needs to use a fine tooth comb and go through this office for integrity and honesty. Definetely was shown an interesting experience one that left me wondering about sincerity, employees not happy with their jobs and a lack of genuine dedication in helping people. Had underlying tones of revenge If I pursued anything further. Pretty scary this exists in county government. I adopted a wonderful cat here several years ago. He was well cared for at this shelter. I love him dearly. There was a gentleman staffer who had a real kindred spirit connection with the animals. I would give this place 5 stars if they didn't euthanize the animals. I hope people who read this adopt an animal from a shelter that does kill, in order to truly save an animal's life. As with any government agency there's never enough money, trying to get the officialsto alot the money needed s not easy. I got my cat from them and it was an excellent choice. I had also check out the other animal shelter, both are great but the adoption fees at the other one was more than I could afford. They even paid for the first vet visit. I found the staff helpful. Sadly we need to remember that local laws often don't allow for some agency to deal with wild animals. I would get a pet from them again. read more

I will never go back there again because my third and last visit was torture to my wife and I. I have been looking on the Internet at their website for over a week straight each day and went in to look at a cat that was not posted and right at the last moment of processing to get this cat they said we're sorry this cat has already been taken. They had no posting of this cat on the Internet they had no posting on the cage they had no idea that this cat has been adopted prior until we got into and almost finished with the paperwork. My wife and I cannot have kids and this was something we were looking forward to for months coming here and checking each time. Then the next day I went in and found a Nother cat that was similar that was also not posted on their website and I wanted to purchase it and they said it has already been taken so they done it to me twice and I will never return. On top of everything else they sent me over to one of their people that care for their cats when they don't have room which is a foster parent. Come to find out they had no information on this cat , it was a terror and we could not even get near it and on top of that it's half of the left leg had been injured and they said that it had a slight problem and drug his left paw slightly but come to find out it drug half of its left leg. The lady with the cat said we never seen it act this way before and then she text me after we left and said I can tell this cat needs more help before we let it out for adoption telling me no one has looked at it and it is extremely skittish and you cannot get near it. So that was the third try and the last. Beware ask lots of questions. read more
