    Can I keep her?
    Brian W.

Writing this review only from the viewpoint of a volunteer... I lost my best friend about a year ago. It was devastating of course, and I'm still not ready to adopt another fur baby yet. Thankfully, I was able to find my temporary fix here at Oregon Dog Rescue. The fostering program is awesome! You fill out a basic online application and then you get nearly weekly emails with opportunities to foster. The coordinator is very good about sharing all relevant details: good with kids, plays well with other pets, etc. they provide all of the food and supplies, too! The dog walking program might be my favorite! No minimum monthly commitments like most agencies to stay active as a walker... you sign up on their website and they offer four slots per day: 7am, 10am, 12pm and 4pm. You get an hour to spend time with a dog in need of some company and exercise. The employees are friendly and approachable. I have very positive things to say about my extended bout as a volunteer here at ODR! I definitely plan to adopt from this place when I'm finally ready... and I'll get my canine fix in plentiful doses in the meantime!

My family has adopted three dogs from ODR and have had good/great experiences with all three. Our most recent adoption appointment was a little chaotic and I the person helping us couldn't answer some important questions (about crating or aggression) because he had been in foster care which is great but information that needs to be known by the person facilitating the adoption.

We found our little buddy here and are giving him his forever home. What a sweet little guy. The process was very easy yet in depth with a lot of questions making sure that the new parents are suitable. The staff couldn't have been any sweeter. After the adoption they let us choose a free toy and piece of clothing from several boxes. Great experience all around.

I adopted a 6 month old pup from Mexico at Oregon Dog Rescue. Cute and sweet as can be. However, he had some major health issues that occurred during the first 2 weeks of adopting that ended up costing me thousands of dollars and that left me with a broken heart due to Oregon Dog Rescue's poor customer service and communication at the management level. I am sharing my experience in hopes that someone will learn something valuable before jumping in head first like I did. During those first 2 weeks of adopting: -My pup came down with a case of all over hives. I rushed him to the emergency vet (of course it was the weekend) and they resolved it with Benadryl and a week of steroids. Still not sure what caused it...a reaction to something and a weakened immune system is my guess. -He came down with kennel cough that turned into life threatening pneumonia. Upon adopting, ODR states that many of their dogs come down with kennel cough within 2 weeks of adopting; at the first sign of a cough, you're told to get them on meds which I did. His kennel cough escalated into pneumonia within 2 days. I rushed him to an emergency vet (occurred on a weekend again - not ODR's vet next door) and the doc said, "He's down to 50% of his lungs. If we don't do something now, he may not make it." I agreed to whatever they suggested to give him the best chance of surviving which meant staying overnight in their care. -After his first official visit to an outside vet, I found out he had Giardia which was not reported when adopting from ODR. After spending a night at the first emergency vet, I transferred him to ODR's vet next door. I was emailing with Kim and Deb from ODR management; there were emails flying back and forth which were brief and confusing. I asked to speak to one of them on the phone or in person to clarify my options. I was denied that request. Their vet asked me, "Are you keeping or surrendering him?" I was filled with sadness and confusion. Was I fully responsible for his continued care? Would ODR help since kennel cough originated from their rescue? Insurance wouldn't cover anything since we were in the 14 day waiting period. I felt like I was backed into a wall without a clear understanding of my options. I agreed to surrender with the dog's best interest at heart. My heart was broken. A few days later, I wrote a plea to ODR's board of directors, explaining the situation and my desire to re-adopt once cleared. I re-iterated the fact that I'm committed to supporting him financially in all scenarios going forward. -I was told he's going to foster care for a month to observe his health. I was supportive of that. -I asked if I could re-adopt. They replied but didn't answer my question so I called to speak with management. I was told they weren't around. I received an email minutes later from management: "This was the board's FINAL decision and we ask that you CEASE calling the rescue." -I emailed them again, asking if I could re-adopt. They replied, "We are NOT approving of you re-adopting and we will not be adopting to you in the future." I feel completely misunderstood. I was the best mom for this dog and I did everything I could do to save his life which was an emotional rollercoaster and cost me thousands of dollars. The least ODR management could do is speak to me on the phone or in person, human to human, and seek to understand. Instead, they chose to close the door in my face and treated me like the worst human in the world. I will never adopt from Oregon Dog Rescue again due to management's poor customer service. Yes, it's ultimately about the dogs but the humans saving the dogs deserve to be treated fairly too.

Pros: we found our new family member here and she is so wonderful. One of the ladies here that helped us was so kind and i appreciated when we were initially called to meet a different dog she did warn us that they were very anxious and may not be the right fit, but we could meet other dogs as well. I appreciated that we were given a long time with each dog and they have an in office cat to test how well they do with cats. We ended up adopting the second dog we met. Cons: It is a bit hard to get an appointment so be sure to check the website constantly and apply asap if you see a pup you're interested in! They did not know a lot about most of the dogs, especially the ones coming from Mexico, so you really do have to trust your gut, which is hard when all animals act different in a shelter. There are some dogs in foster care, though. It's also a lot pricier to adopt from here ($425 for our adult dog, more for puppies and less for seniors), than, say, most county shelters. But that does include 1 vet visit with the wonderful clinic next door and all needed vaccines. They also let us pick out a couple toys to take with. One of the ladies was a bit gruff with us but I think she just really cares that rules are followed, which I totally understand. It's clear to me this shelter really cares about their dogs and wants them to go to good homes, I would work with them again.

He's turning old and grey, such a good little dog:)

We requested a low energy dog and was told the one we were interested in was like this. His ad mentioned some training required but that he was otherwise laid back. The shelter told us he was only leash reactive. This was not the case. We brought the dog home and he was high energy and needed an incredible amount of training. Most notably he was highly reactive, which requires special training, and we were never informed he was like this. Reactive dogs can turn aggressive if it is not dealt with. His vet records, which were only given to us after his adoption, showed that he had a long history of reactivity and being on anti-anxiety medication that we were never told about. We reached out to the shelter for help 3 days after bringing the dog home and they didn't respond. It wasn't until we told the shelter that the dog was not a fit for our family that they responded, 2 days after our initial request. The shelter then told us we had to wait 9 more days before we could return the dog to their care, even after requesting a sooner date because he was causing a lot of stress to our household. When we returned the dog, the associate did not let us inside, and took his leash from my hand. I asked if we needed to fill out any intake paperwork. She said no so I asked if we could fill out paperwork because there was a lot of information they didn't tell us about the dog. She said no again, said there wasn't anything else they needed from us, and shut the door in our face. We had to wait nine days for an intake appointment that lasted less than a minute and required nothing but us passing over his leash. This was after we explained the amount of distress he was causing our dogs and the safety risk he posed due to his energy level and my partner's disability. It is clear that the shelter does not care where their dogs end up. This was an incredibly stressful 2 weeks for both my family and the dog because the shelter was not honest about his personality. This dog needs to be with a very specific household, and based on everything we told them about ourselves, we were not it. It seems it was more important to them that he was adopted by somebody, rather than him being adopted by the right family who could provide him what he needs. He suffers the most in this situation.

They're a professional dog groomer, previously with Petco for four years, and now working at a private dog spa in Eugene, so trust me, they know a thing or two about pet supply stores. They immediately said Sellwood Pet Supply is one of the best they've visited. The store has a wide, thoughtful selection of essentials and unique finds, many of which are hard to come by elsewhere. They carry goodies like Himalayan Yak Chews, plus a fun range of dried meat snacks for dogs, from sardines to frog legs to octopus, just to name a few. We also loved the old-school whiteboard showing what's on sale, written in colorful markers, a quirky, personal touch that made the place feel warm and real. The staff were incredibly friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable, answering all our questions with patience and a sense of humor. It was such a refreshing contrast to the often snooty vibe of some high-end boutique pet shops. This spot is a Sellwood gem! I highly recommend stopping by if you care about quality products and kind people who genuinely love pets.

I give a big thumbs up for Sadie's Safe House Chihuahua Rescue! Shanae is absolutely wonderful and…read moreso kind. I found her by accident but am so glad I did find her. She helped me adopt my puppy Rickey, formerly known as Mickey Mouse and he is just a love. The entire process was smooth and uncomplicated. I was nervous about the home visit at first but Shanae put us at ease right away when she arrived and brought Ricky for his meet and greet. I knew the minute I met him he was meant to be our baby and Shanae agreed, the hard part was letting him go until the adoption event when we could adopt him. But that gave us time to puppy proof our house and get ready for him to come home. They have a pretty fool proof method so that people don't have reasons to return their adopted puppies or dogs due to impulse adoptions. So that one week waiting period was hard on us, but I totally understand the reason for it and agree with the reasons for. All the puppies and dogs come vaccinated and spayed or neutered and have all health issues tended to and are made known to the adopters so they/we can continue care. This is a fantastic rescue agency and is a great cause to donate to for people looking to donate to a place that truly helps animals, they are 501C3 and all donations are tax deductible. So if you aren't adopting please consider a donation to help the dogs still needing homes. If you are looking to adopt please consider Sadie's Safe House Chihuahua Rescue :)

I've always known I've wanted a little chi chi of my own but waited years and years until I knew I was in a place to care for a pet the way I wanted to and the way a sweet pup should be cared for. So once I graduated from law school and had been working as an attorney a few years, the time was right. Not only is Shanae the most animal-knowledgeable person I know, she is also the most incredible rescuer I know. These animals are her heart and soul. She makes ZERO profit financially from this rescue (it's literally a nonprofit org), the only "profit" she is looking for is that each little angel that finds its way to her ends up in its forever home with a safe, wonderful family. Having my pup has changed my life. I feel like I have found my soulmate in my puppy and that we were always meant to find each other and be in each other's lives. She is my joy, my comfort, my emotional support, my little cuddle, my confidante, my fur-child my everything, especially after the past year we've all lived through. And I owe it all to Shanae. Any animal coming to Shanae's rescue is literally coming to a safe house. Every animal is vaccinated and fixed/spayed, micro-chipped and loved before they arrive at their forever homes. There are so many other organizations out there claiming to be "rescues", but the "rescuers" are really just trying to turn a profit by selling animals. Sadie's Safehouse stands out because Shanae's one and only goal is to get these properly-cared for pups into forever homes where they will continue to be properly cared for. Shanae has seen it all - abuse, people returning animals after a week, a month, years, etc. She vets these adoption applications based on her firsthand personal knowledge and caretaking of these animals and what types of homes they will best fit in with. Nobody knows them better than she does, so if your application gets denied, you should know there is reasonable and important justification behind it. Shanae has answered every question and addressed every concern (even my overprotective puppy mom ones) I've ever asked, every time. She's calmed my nerves and been the best support in the world for a first time puppy mommy, even a year after I've adopted my girl. If you have questions about a stray bad review online (or if you ARE a bad reviewer) please feel free to give me a call. I am MORE than happy to have a conversation about how insanely incredible and selfless Shanae is and would love to talk your ear off about how much this rescue has changed my life. Shanae is an Animal Angel in my book. She's the one rescue in town that I am 100% confident is an actual Safehouse. And I will continue to tell everyone I know about this rescue and support her and these pups. You should too.
