COVID update: the library is back open for limited serves. Books can be reserved online and picked up by appointment only. The only downside is that it can take awhile on hold on the phone to get an appointment time. This is a very nice branch of the library. After visiting a number of the other branches, I feel lucky to have such a large branch close to my home. My toddler really enjoys the kids play area. This branch also offers a lot of different programs through the week for children and older adults. I haven't been to any of these, I cannot comment on the quality. read more

What a great library! There seems to be a decent amount of parking spots available throughout. Apparently there is underground parking available as well so I will have to look into that next time! I was not a fan to begin of this building, but it's grown on me. At one time, there was hope Hillsdale, the crossroads of Capitol Highway, Beaverton Hillsdale Highway, Bertha Blvd and Sunset Blvd, would be a new urbanism center, with the library anchoring mixed use shops, office and housing. Hillsdale has schools and pools, restaurants, services, a grocery, even a farmer's market. What ultimately happened was a free standing library building a block from the shop area. Designed by Portland's Thomas Hacker firm, the building is airy. There is a surprising amount of natural light. The warm wood ceiling is supported by a series of steel structures reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright's Great Workroom in the Johnson Wax Building, Racine, WI. Unlike more crowded branches, there is almost never a wait for the computers and you can use your own computer via WiFi. There is a good size parking garage with an EV charging station underneath. There is plenty of table space with outlets. There are children's areas too. Several small study rooms which would be great for tutoring. There is a small park across the street and the first ever McMenamins pub for a beer and burger after your studies. The building solves the problem of Hillsdale's hills with a large interior stairway which seems a waste of space. That provides an entrance and tony Sunset Boulevard address, while most people use the door on DeWitt. Venturi's Seattle Art Museum has the same design. I like the building now after using it. It is the first LEED certified library in the city and if you look you can see those details - excellent. Chill newish neighborhood library. Your and my government at work. Great job. read more

I am grateful there are still libraries. I like that people work there and we have all these resources. I don't think it's a place to let your child run wild and scream and cry. Parenting aint easy, but when I went to the library as a kid -----you were super quiet, no exceptions. I love my library but can't bear that this branch (and others) have not been able to be open in any meaningful way on July 1 when the whole state is now open!!! I will make the trek to Capitol Hill to go inside and get my 'On Hold' books. Also it took me 10 minutes to figure out that Hillsdale is still in pandemic mode. This architectural stunner is also a nice place to spend the afternoon. Their selection of books is somewhat lacking, as it's not a huge facility, but you can special order books from other branches and they usually arrive pretty fast. Most libraries I've visited seem stuffy and dusty, this one is bright and airy. I got a library card six days after moving to town. In other cities, I've had to jump through hoops and prove my address to get a card. Here, I just walked in and said I wanted one, and they gave it to me with minimal fuss. My previous library here was the Belmont one- tiny. The Hillsdale library is a sigh of relief because it's bigger and is a really nice building. There's a parking garage if you need it, too. If you need a computer for whatever, then there's a bunch to choose from. Lots of natural lighting and a fair amount of books. I'd say it's a step or three up from the library that I'm used to. I stopped by here to check out a couple of travel books for my upcoming trip. What a wonderful staff they have here. I was greeted as soon as I entered and then asked if I needed any assistance. Well, since I don't go to the library that often I obviously needed the help. The assistant not only looked up my books for me, but then took me directly to where they were. Then she assisted me with changing all my personal information in the system, b/c I hadn't used my library card in ages and it was at least 10+ years old. What a wonderful experience here. I would highly recommend a visit here for your library needs. read more

This library is very nice, clean, and well let! Although there are not a ton of books in this library, it is a nice place to spend an afternoon. The only time this place sucks is when there are like 50 high school kids outside sending each other many texts and saying OMG. That is the signal to leave. read more

This library is absolutely gorgeous. The staff is beyond helpful and fun (I mean, who doesn't love a good librarian, right?) and have more of a "welcome to the party" attitude than a "sit down and shut up" attitude that you can find in most libraries. Tons of services here. If the main library gets too loud (which it can, on occasion), there are "quiet rooms" that you can retreat to. They also offer 1 hour of computer time with printing (.10/page) and you can even check out a laptop. Pretty cool! The collection is not vast, but decent. If there is something you're looking for that is in another branch, they can get it for you. It was also the easiest card registration process I have ever been through in a government building. read more

Part of the mulnomah county library system, this branch received the LEED gold certification as a green building. That means its sustainable in every sense of the word. It also means that its a nice looking brick and glass structure with SO many windows that bring a crazy amount of sunlight inside. Good sized, but not as overwhelming as some other branches. What an awesome library! This location is smaller, but in a very nice building with parking below and tons of windows. I love the fact that you can view your account online and even place holds on books. I was able to find most of what I was looking for, and place a hold on the one book that I didn't find. Although the hillsdale location doesn't always have the titles I'm looking for (in fact, I'd say they carry about 80% of popular titles at any given time), their small, cozy library is just right. I love perusing the racks on a weekday afternoon, especially when the weather's crummy. The library has huge picture windows along the west side, so it gets a lot of natural light. The librarians do a great job and the space is always clean. I wouldn't plan on a quiet reading space during the weekends, however- that can be hit-or-miss and the library can get quite noisy. read more

Books. They seem outdated this days, what with all that Kindle iPad stuff going on. Mainly I'm into libraries these days for the CDs, and this particular location has a small but usually interesting selection of stuff. It's also in Hillsdale so their aren't as many literary loving homeless people hanging out front either, which makes it a bit more attractive than the downtown library. read more

I've moved around a lot in my life, and the first thing I always do is apply for a library card in my new location. So, I've known and used a LOT of different libraries across the country. It's simple--Hillsdale is the best. Great ambience, a lot of books and shelf space, private cubicles for studying, a lovely corner sitting area for reading. But mostly, it's the people who work there! Knowledgeable, helpful, cheerful. Yes, I know it sounds like I was paid to do this review, but it's really the truth. read more

The parking can be difficult. On the street I have had to drive around the block, and inside the garage it requires intense concentration and delicacy of manuevering to park without scraping a pole or another car. Once inside, though, the library is spacious and airy. The books and other materials are well organized and there is plenty of light. read more

Beautiful, bustling neighborhood library branch. They have a nice browsing collection, and, the nice & helpful staff can help you order stuff from the other libraries if you need more. This system "floats" cds and dvds from other branches, so, what you return stays there unless it's been requested. You might discover a new band or filmmaker each week! read more

I needed a Ballot Drop Box the other day!!!! It's 2012 Boys & Girls!!! I wanted to ROCK my vote! I really like dropping my ballot off in person. I'm nostalgic and romantic that way. I went on my lunch hour. So, I was pretty excited to find a drop box super close to where I work!!! This Multnomah County Library is nestled in the super fab Hillsdale neighborhood. The architecture of this building is way attractive. Very Sharp. I found a parking spot quiet easily. Hopped out of my car and found two nice volunteers waiting to witness my ballot drop. Sadly they did not have an "I voted" sticker for me. I tooted my own horn loud enough, anyway. Hahahaha I'm from California and have many lovely memories of voting at the polls. I'm glad we at least have the option to drop our ballots in person here in Oregon!!! I know it's not perfect, but I don't think any way is. I was happy to have this Beautiful Library available to me to make another Voting memory! read more

I love my library. The staff at the Hillsdale Branch is awesome, always very helpful. The branch is new and lovely. They have, unfortunately, cut back the magazine subscriptions, so one must go to Central Branch to get a good variety. But, the computerized catalog (which can be accessed from any computer) is excellent. The holds system works very well. read more

I love coming here. It's quiet, clean, and has a friendly and helpful staff. I've used their study rooms for training purposes in the past, which has worked out well. Nice, new, well-lit library. The staff has always been friendly and the building is kept clean. However, the selection at this branch is pretty limited, so you're better off ordering a book online from another branch and having it sent here for pickup. I also wouldn't recommend this as a place to study, unless you use one of the few study rooms, since there are often lots of kids running around. The parking garage is also poorly designed and bit of a nightmare. I opt to park further away rather than traverse the gridlock in the garage. The elevator from the garage to the library is also SUPER slow. It's much faster to just walk out of the garage and walk up the main stairs to the entrance. read more

This is the closest library to me and convenient for picking up books I've ordered through the library website. However, it is not a quiet place nor conducive to either reading or studying. Half the square footage is given over to a huge, open, and always full children's section. There are little to no attempts by either parents or librarians to maintain some quiet. It's basically an indoor playground. read more
