Repaired some inherited silver pieces well and polished them to boot! When I went to pick them up and upon inspection I wondered if a couple more repairs could be possible to make the pieces look 'perfect', they took them back and reviewed with the silversmith and told me it wasn't recommended because it could weaken the metal too much. Mumford Restoration is very good and very expensive, so I could not afford to have my new/used Hitchcock desk restored here on a teacher retirement budget. But I was very impressed with their assessment of the piece and suggestions on how it should be tackled. In addition, as I was finally escaping away for a short vacation for the first time in years, they very kindly agreed to keep the desk and stool safe for me until I return next week to pick them up. I thot that was immensely kind of them. Their premises are neat and tidy, parking is comfortable and well-lit, the office is clean and well-organized and so is the shop. The people who work there are also very professional. No bare bellies, scraggly beards, or saggy jeans here! Their paperwork is easy to read, forthright, and up to date. I would have no difficulty entrusting my things to them for excellent repairs. I have been treated so nicely by them, even tho I can't afford them. ..i just had a conversation with the Mumford Restoration owner Bernard about restoring my grandmother's clock. He gave an a restoration and repair estimate of between $2600-$4,000 plus. Pick-up and delivery would be $195 additional each way. I had questions about the repair process and any possible repairs and/or broken or missing parts if any. My clock hadn't worked for 10 years and I'm unsure what work/.parts might be needed. Bernard rudly responded to my questions noted above saying this sounded too complicated for him; he doesn't want to work on my clock; and that I should take my $2K-&4K+ restoration repair job to their competitor, Pender Restoration in Raleigh, which is what I will do. He offered a full refund for the two they had subcontracted, and asked for photos which I then emailed. He responded promptly and with an apology. That takes class. I'm not a fan. Mr. Mumford and crewmember did collateral damage while repairing an item. The additional problem occurred because he was in a hurry, gave unclear instructions to his partner, and failed to take precautionary actions. He returned to repair both items - the original repair plus the one he created. When we expressed concern that the item he broke wasn't in the same condition, he failed to acknowledge the problem, and left clearly exasperated. read more

Total rip off they over charge: We had 3 estimates to have the fabric on wrought iron patio chairs redone and fix the graphite on 2 rocker patio chairs. Their estimate was OVER $3,000 while 2 other places estimated between $1,100 to 1,200!!! Needless to say we had one of the other places do a perfect job for a 3rd of the price! Another time we had Mumford fix a broken frame on our leather sofa and it broke within 1 week again. They just put some screws. I suggested a metal flat bar to brace the wood beam....they sent a more experienced guy to do just that it lasted. Brought a old rocking chair for repair. Was told entire chair was taken apart and re-glued. Was charged $200. Chair broke again several weeks later. Took the chair to a different shop and was told they didn't re-glue anything. All that was done is they added a cheap screw to the arms. Total rip off. Go elsewhere. read more

Sent a request to have a chair fixed. It is an oak dining chair that one of my son's friends broke the back off. It is a clean break and could easily be fixed with a couple of dowel rods. I could do it, but just thought I would get a professional to do it. chair doesn't even need touch up unless they scratch it. $350 was the price quoted. Seriously! I can get a whole new table and 6 chairs exact same one for less than $1000 on eBay. I like the chair, but not that much. I'll attempt the fix myself. read more

In a recent interstate move my antique cherry dining room table suffered great damage. The table has two pedestals with three curved legs on each pedestal. Four of those legs were broken into pieces. One of the dining room chairs also suffered breakage. I really did not think there was much hope for the table, but I called Mumford Restorations and asked for an opinion and estimate. Our moving company broke the marble top on our 1880, handmade, oak sideboard in two. Bernard came and reassured us that it could be repaired in an aesthetically acceptable manner. He took it to his shop, and while he was on vacation, his crew finished the work, and brought it back. We were not happy and left it on the truck to go back to the shop. Bernard called when he returned, and said he wanted us to be completely happy. He redid the repair and it looks beautiful. This piece is important to us and we are thrilled. If you don't know exactly where the break is, you will not find it. Additionally, he cut the final bill with no prompting from us. That was the right thing to do. Bernard Mumford and his shop refinished a hundred year old Mason and Hamlin parlor grand piano. It has been in our family since the early 1900's and moved around quite a lot. It was in good shape but needed restoration of the wood, keys and brass. Bernard took it away in May and returned it in August. What a beautiful job he did. It is gorgeous. He worked hard getting the appropriate materials (and when he could not, made them himself). His price was more than fair considering the hours spent in stripping it and refurbishing it. He invited us to the shop a number of times so we could observe the process and make suggestions. Bernard was extremely accommodating.
