They did it; they finally did it. After years of threatening to do it and before they actually completed the infrastructure with which to do it, Muni altered the 22-Fillmore's route so that it now ends near Chase Center in Mission Bay rather than a little farther south in Dogpatch. Although time and COVID and life have made it so that this drastic change doesn't affect my life now as much as it would have had my life remained the same as it was when they started planning this, I'm still annoyed. I loved riding the 22 up Connecticut Street and down 18th Street, and I loved the approach to 3rd Street. I even loved it when they moved the final stop from the corner of 3rd & 20th to the corner of 20th & Tennessee, annoying language-immersion school and all. Little did I know that that temporary final-stop moving would be permanent, as in eventually removed completely. Instead up dipping and diving gradually into and up Potrero Hill like it used to, the 22 now continues east on 16th Street until 3rd Street, where it turns left. For those keeping score at home, the new route of the 22-Fillmore is identical to the original route of the 55-16th Street before that line turned into the 55-Dogpatch (bad name!). See, the 55 was created because the 22 couldn't continue on 16th Street, since there were no overhead wires. They were going to change the 22's route once those wires came into being, but Muni upgraded its electric buses before that happened, and the new buses can travel quite a long distance on battery power without being connected to the overhead wires, so the 22-Fillmore now zips down 16th Street all the way to Mission Bay. Look, the new 55-Dopatch route is interesting, but I miss being able to take a 22 from near my house to Dogpatch without having to change buses at Bryant or Potrero. I know that I probably need the exercise of walking south from Chase Center to wherever I go--or used to go--regularly in Dogpatch, but I miss seeing what's left of the Potrero Hill mural without having to get off a bus and walk. And I miss 18th Street. read more

Little did I know that the 22-Fillmore chugs and hefts its way up the hills from Bay Street in the Marina all the way through the Fillmore, Western Addition, Castro, the Mission and Potrero Hill before its last stop at Third and 20th in Dogpatch. 90 stops in all [that *must be round-trip] Who needs Uber? So whether you're headed north to Union Street for shopping, dining and errands (Admire the bay views and wave "hello!" to The Mrs. Doubtfire House at the corner of Broadway and Steiner before the 22 switches back to a less hilly part of Fillmore Street) Or headed south into the Mission and onto Potrero Hill and Dogpatch, this 24-hour line is a workhouse of the MTA. Fares increased to $2.75 for adults/$1.35 for kids July '17 and now the till spits out the transfer/proof of payment clocked to *exactly 90 minutes from when you boarded. Sigh- no more generous 4 -5 hour transfers torn from a paper booklet from drivers inclined to cut commuters an occasional break. read more

I ride this bus line a lot when I have to return back to work from a break. It's really frequent so I don't have to worry if I'm late for a shift. This bus line actually runs well into the late night hours. The trip across town is really pleasant because most of the time you see less people riding but more than my favorite bus line. You get great views of San Francisco when riding. There are some key sites that make this line famous such as the Mrs. Doubtfire house. There are shops along the way too. Japantown is along the route with the 2 line. Drawbacks: the equipment on this bus line has not updated which was a problem for me when I first worked or ridden as a passenger on this line. If you ride during the late night hours it can be real tough because most people are either sleeping or drained out. read more

Had to go to Concentra Occupational Health and the downtown location was pretty full so had to come down towards Mission Bay. Before planning on coming down, I didn't realize there were no buses other than the 22 that went anywhere near 16th St. The part I hated was when I boarded the 22 on Church, there were no signs so had to go bus chasing to make sure I wasn't late. It runs near where I stay in the Church Station area and it links me to Japantown, an area I always feel drawn to (thats another review though). I have good luck on this bus. I always seem to score a seat. and I like to watch the neighborhoods pass one by one. I also catch it back a lot. I when I go to the Fishermans Wharf area I like to walk along the bay to the Marina Neighborhood. Then I can catch the 22 back to Church station. There used to be a perfectly fine bus shelter here. One of the old style with 3 walls and 3 seats along with a nice map to help you find your way around. It was so nice because this has to be one of the WINDIEST intersections ever. Well just last month they decided it would be a good idea to replace this perfectly good and working shelter with one of the new ones with the wavy roofs. This would have been fine with me if it had retained the functionality of the old one... The new bus shelter is nothing but one glass wall with a small roof. ONE WALL. No seats, no protection from the elements, no map, no NextMuni service. NOTHING! It boggles my mind why they would take out a good, working bus shelter to replace it with a dysfunctional wall. The 22 line is one of the most "colorful" lines in the MUNI system. This line goes from one extreme to the other (Bayview to the Marina). And what a fun ride it is in-between. It was the 22 line that single-handedly gave me the inspiration to create my zine, Xploited. Every morning that I would commute to work on the 22, I had a great story to tell my co-workers. My day in the office always began with a "You will never guess what happened to me on the bus this morning!". From the rowdy school kids to the homeless ladies falling asleep on me only to awake and ask me for the lunch sitting in my lap, I have seen it all on the 22. I never had the opportunity to read anything while riding this bus because I was too busy looking out the window or observing the people onboard. I spent the first few years of my childhood in Catholic school. Thus I have this compulsion to confess everything I feel guilty about. Forgive me Yelp, for I have sinned on the 22 Fillmore. I often take this bus line because it runs all night, goes right by my house, and takes me north to the Marina or east to the Mission/Potrero area. So there are a lot of sins. * Sometimes, when the bus isn't crowded, I sit in the seats designated for elderly people and disabled people even though I am none of the above. * Sometimes I ride the bus all the way to the end even though no one else is on the bus anymore. Have you ever had one of those days? I woke up this morning and my alarm had not gone off. Not good. And just the beginning of a spiraling downhill morning that included missing my morning workout (now I feel like a slug), having to rush through my shower (I really need to shave my damn legs), running out of coffee (grrr.), discovering my favorite pants are still at the drycleaners (grrrrrr.), my hair has decided today is the day to strike for independence (I hate curls) and it's raining (GRRRRRRR!!!!!!!!). I am not looking forward to walking through the door to work. I am not prepared for a day of meetings, calls and at least three fires to be put out. I dedicate this review and bus line to Wesley Willis. The debate about whether this schizophrenic poet's recordings are art or exploitation will need to be settled by scholars bolder and wiser than myself. What I can say is there is a kernel of truth in many of his lyrics, particularly from his numerous songs that center around riding the bus. Lyrics from songs like "Fit Throwing Hell Ride" and "Hell Me On The Bus" (where he masters the use of "hell" as a verb!) swirl around in my head as I cling to one of the poles for support, trying not to suffocate an elderly person with my man-bag. I've witnessed fights, drug use, and sunflower seeds being spit all over the floor on this bus line. I have also witnessed many acts of kindness and met some very nice people on this line that meanders across the city. The 22 has been my willing chariot late at night after a raucous show at the Bottom of the Hill, and it's been my designated driver after many nights of many beers in the Mission. So when I am on my own "Fit Throwing Hell Ride", I think, "What would Wesley do?" (He would probably tell the driver to do something unspeakable/illegal with his Doberman) and chuckle to myself. This bus is a rolling douche apocalypse. This bus actually stops on every single corner between Mission St ( or whereever the hell it starts) and the Marina. I have never been on this bus when someone hasn't -reeked of booze, -having a conversation with themselves, -was smoking their marijuana, -someone blaring rap music at full blast and singing along -the crackhead with the "I am a victim of domestic violence and only need $10 bucks for a room for the night" speech to the whole bus BUT, the all time favorite - when a homeless guy faked a seizure, then tried to pickpocket the guy who was coming to his aid. The tough thing was I used to take this in lieu of a cab from 16th and Valencia all the way to Fillmore and Union. It absolutely sucked!!!!! "You have been deemed a regular on the 22 Fillmore." Well, then, a review is in order. I live in the Western Addition and work in Potrero, so the 22 and I are indeed well-acquainted. How do I feel about this? That's kind of like asking how I feel about fog. If I weren't OK with the 22, I'd have to move. First the good. This route covers a huge swath of town, hitting a bunch of fun neighborhoods with corresponding fun places to go. The Lower Haight, The Mission, Pac Heights, the aforementioned Potrero and Western Addition - that's a nice representation of SF. Additionally, the 22 comes by more frequently than many routes and runs all night. The downside... the 22 is wicked slow. A ton of people ride this bus, meaning that 1) it is frequently crowded, 2) it invariably stops every couple of blocks, and 3) each time it stops it takes awhile for people to board/exit. Also, as the 22 is part of the dysfunction that is Muni, no matter how frequently it's scheduled you'll sometimes wind up waiting for some time. Case in point: I walked to work this morning because the arrival times were 27, 29 and 42 minutes. My advice, aside from planning for slowness and checking NextMuni, is to look at the bus ride as a little downtime. Do the crossword, read, contemplate what color superhero cape to order from Amazon, people-watch. Whatever keeps you out of trouble and un-cranky. Bottom line: props to the 22 for getting me from Point A to Point B on a near-daily basis, even if it's not always in a timely fashion. read more

A good book when you're feeling mundane - anything by bukowski; it's reassuring to know life can be hopelessly great. I sit in dive bars these days spending hours peering over the front-table crew; could one of those half-eaten deadbeats with the trucker cap and stained shirt be the most brilliantly literate person I've ever seen? It's likely. And instead of knitting awful tops for cousins you don't like, bobbing your head to white-phones on the fly, you should spend more time on the Muni bus. It may not have been the reason I moved to this city... but it's certainly one of my favourite's now that I'm here. The people stuck together in that space are the most fascinating you'll ever set eyes on - yesterday I rode the 22 all the way up, and next to me were these two homeless men chatting merrily about their mamma's. On the occasion that a pretty thing stepped onto the bus the taller one would spring to his feet and a reveal an elaborate mock-bowling action, screaming after her "strike!" Once a group of kids ambushed the bus train robbery-style and took the line off it's electric track to try to steal pitbulls puppies. True story. Then there was the fist fight that erupted right over my head. Blood almost got on my face but I ducked and it spattered onto the window. My coworker was on the back of that bus and saw the fight start. I saw it end. I've met a boyfriend waiting for the 22, broken my ankle running for the 22 and gotten into a fight with a Marina bitc-um, I mean lady when she started getting all kinds of racially offensive on the back of the 22. Oh, and it's also full of l-o-t-s of waiting since the schedule is routinely interrupted by a driver whose "leader" called out that day. You're not a San Franciscan if you've never taken at least *ONE* ride on the "22 Feelmore". I have seen drug deals take place in the back. The crowd? A mix of Pac Heights yuppies in the front, and a lot of urban kids and homeless in the back. And why is some kid *ALWAYS* trying to blast a stereo in the back? Uggh. If you have an iPod, blast that shit and take a window seat. It's crowded on this bus 90% of the time, especially if you get on @ Church/Market and head towards the Fillmore. It's one of my least-favorite MUNI lines, but I just zone out on my iPod and try to ignore it. It's usually on-time during the day and rush hour, but slows down tremendously after 8PM. read more

The other day, I heard someone giving someone else directions to the Marina from where I live near Church and Duboce. She recommended taking the 22, "sketch as it is." Sketch as it is? Is that code for "with brown people?" WTF? I take this bus every day, often multiple times a day. In the morning, I take it to Mission 16th BART, even though I could take the N or J instead, or even any of the undergrounds at Church. But I'd rather press up against folks on the 22 than deal with the downtown-commuting iPhone addicts on the rails, any day. On the 22, when someone bumps into you, they say, "Excuse me." People get up (no matter how drunk they are) to give seats to women with children and to disabled people and to elderly people and to just tired people too sometimes. Also, the other day, when someone DIDN'T say excuse me for bumping into someone else on the 22, one of the frequent riders started yelling at him, "What happened to 'Excuse me'? What happened to 'Pardon me'? WE ARE ALL EQUAL ON THE BUS." So true. Amen. read more

It's an adventure that we wear like a badge of courage -- yes, we are survivors and we like to share what we have endured. I could tell you several stories about this bus but for now I will only recount one that I can't get out of my head. One afternoon I boarded a 22 and thought "Aha! A free seat! Perfect." I'd been walking up and down hills and wanted to sit on my ride to Dolores Park. I come to the seat and was about to plop myself down and then I saw it. There on the seat, someone left a bloody lump of gauze and bandage. The damn thing wadded up and placed on the seat, like it was a dainty corsage set on a chair at a dinner party. I noticed a few drops of blood on the floor below the seat, one the size of a dime. Yes, I am in the most beautiful large city in America. It also happens to be home to many of the most disgusting people on earth. Overheard on the 22-Fillmore: "I've been talking to my boss about trying to get some more hours. And hopefully, I'll be able to get that done pretty soon. So, my roommates and I were having some trouble paying our electric bill, so I went down to PG&E to work out some kind of financing, and the guy at the desk was someone I went to college with. So that was, like, waaaay embarrassing. We sorta caught up, and the end result was we now get 20% off our electric bill. Which is REALLY great. Now, if only our heat was electric. Wait, is our heat electric? I don't know." Moral: if you're a 20-something white female hipster who has a college degree but is, for some reason, working a job where you have to ASK for more hours, one of the risks inherent to your lifestyle is running into a classmate who ISN'T pissing their life away, and having that classmate judge you based on the shallow life decisions you're making. But, hey, let's not dwell on this life lesson, because that's depressing. Have another PBR and buy that tweed slouch cap you've had your eye on. I'm sure that will solve EVERYTHING. read more

The deuce deuce...or as I like to say, "the little bus that could". Look, sometimes it smells like urine. And you'll learn a lot about snitchin' from eavesdropping. That being said, this is one of the most absurdly convenient lines in the entire northeast quadrant of the city. This bus drops you off in the heart of the Marina, Cow Hollow, Pac Heights, Lower Pac Heights, Western Addition, Lower Haight, Duboce Triangle, Castro, Mission (Dolores Park, 16th, Valencia, Mission, AND the industrial area), Portrero Hill, Dogpatch. There could not be a more convenient line for the happening neighborhoods of the city...and if none of those strike your fancy, get off at 16th and Mission, and take BART with your Clipper Card up to Civic Center, SOMA, Union Square, Financial, Embarcadero/Waterfront. In short, if you want to hit up any of the best corridors for restaurants, nightlife, or shopping, this line will take you there. It runs frequently, and is rarely late. Sketch factor? If you are a dude, the worst that will happen is that you will hear a drunk homeless man sing Baby Bash for half the ride. If you are a girl, it's a little worse, as said homeless man will sing said Baby Bash songs in your ear, but just move over a seat and you'll be fine...although he won't stop singing. Today was yet another perfect example of life in the fast lane on the 22 Fillmore: Waited 25 minutes during morning rush hour. Wondered if constantly feeling like a sardine will eventually turn you into one. Learned a few new cuss words, courtesy of the 12 year old preteens on their way to catholic school. Watched a crack-head pee his pants. Got yelled at by an old Chinese lady for what I assume must simply be the fact that I exist. Had to walk an additional three blocks because the driver decided my stop just wasn't cool enough to stop at, even though I had pulled the line in plenty of time. And all of that with a horrendous hangover. The Double Deuce really is the barnacle on my ship of love. read more

Ah, c'mon guys she's not all bad. What I like about this line is the different demographics it picks up; Yuppy 30 somethings from Potrero Hill, Trendy kids in Hayes/Castro, Juvenile delinquents in the western addition, Japanese grandmothers from Japantown, Bros and assorted ladies who lunch in Pacific heights/the Marina. When they all get on a bus together what do you get? A city! read more
