The 44 O'Shaughnessy certainly tops MUNI's list of busy routes. Sometimes Next Bus predictions are accurate. Other times the predictions tend to be off, it's also good to trust your sightings. One of the features that make this route interesting is how it goes up and down O'Shaughnessy Blvd. This route serves Glen Park BART Station, Forest Hill MUNI Metro Station, California Academy of Sciences and de Young Museum. Getting on the 44 O'Shaughnessy is between rush hour commutes. That is 5 am - 7 am, 9 am - 2 pm and after 6 pm. This is because it's easy to get a seat upon boarding the bus.

Even the muni prediction is screaming AAAAAAAAA. Jaysus.

What has been wrong with the bus prediction service recently, on the 44 O Shaughnessy and the 5 ? I see there's a 22 minute wait and decide it's way too long, so I start walking. And three minutes later the bus whizzes past me??? It's maddening and seems to be happening more and more.

After years of threatening to do it and before they actually…read morecompleted the infrastructure with which to do it, Muni altered the 22-Fillmore's route so that it now ends near Chase Center in Mission Bay rather than a little farther south in Dogpatch. Although time and COVID and life have made it so that this drastic change doesn't affect my life now as much as it would have had my life remained the same as it was when they started planning this, I'm still annoyed. I loved riding the 22 up Connecticut Street and down 18th Street, and I loved the approach to 3rd Street. I even loved it when they moved the final stop from the corner of 3rd & 20th to the corner of 20th & Tennessee, annoying language-immersion school and all. Little did I know that that temporary final-stop moving would be permanent, as in eventually removed completely. Instead up dipping and diving gradually into and up Potrero Hill like it used to, the 22 now continues east on 16th Street until 3rd Street, where it turns left. For those keeping score at home, the new route of the 22-Fillmore is identical to the original route of the 55-16th Street before that line turned into the 55-Dogpatch (bad name!). See, the 55 was created because the 22 couldn't continue on 16th Street, since there were no overhead wires. They were going to change the 22's route once those wires came into being, but Muni upgraded its electric buses before that happened, and the new buses can travel quite a long distance on battery power without being connected to the overhead wires, so the 22-Fillmore now zips down 16th Street all the way to Mission Bay. Look, the new 55-Dopatch route is interesting, but I miss being able to take a 22 from near my house to Dogpatch without having to change buses at Bryant or Potrero. I know that I probably need the exercise of walking south from Chase Center to wherever I go--or used to go--regularly in Dogpatch, but I miss seeing what's left of the Potrero Hill mural without having to get off a bus and walk. And I miss 18th Street.

So whether you're headed north to Union Street for shopping, dining and errands (Admire the bay views and wave "hello!" to The Mrs. Doubtfire House at the corner of Broadway and Steiner before the 22 switches back to a less hilly part of Fillmore Street) Or headed south into the Mission and onto Potrero Hill and Dogpatch, this 24-hour line is a workhouse of the MTA. Fares increased to $2.75 for adults/$1.35 for kids July '17 and now the till spits out the transfer/proof of payment clocked to *exactly 90 minutes from when you boarded. Sigh- no more generous 4 -5 hour transfers torn from a paper booklet from drivers inclined to cut commuters an occasional break.

If you happen to be taking this route during peak hours, the first bus or two is usually very crowded. I'm a regular passenger on the 29 now that I am attending San Francisco State University. Since the 29 also passes by several schools along the way, it does tend to be crowded with students everyday. Otherwise being the route taking students between San Francisco State University and the Bayview District. It'll be very nice to see more improved bus frequency on this route.

The 29 Sunset is actually kind of a cool route since it's Northern Terminus is way up in the Presidio and it goes through the Richmond, Golden Gate Park, the Sunset (on Sunset) and then swings past Lake Merced, through Ingleside and Excelsior, hits John McLaren Park and then chugs on over to where Candlestick used to be. That's a killer route. You could legitimately see a lot of The City going from one end to the other. I'm tempted to give this whole ride a shot. OK, I digress. I use this to get up and down from Baker Beach. It's super handy because you can jump right up from the beach and easily connect with your West-East bus of choice. I like the 1-California, but you can get the 38-Geary, 31-Balboa, 5-Fulton and a few others if you so choose. And, that's just North of Golden Gate Park. By the way, two pro-tips: First, if you need to run up and hit a liquor store on a Beach Day, good 'ole Tiger Liquors is on Clement and you can go up and down pretty quick if you time it right. Also, if you are heading home but want to hit a bar before catching the 1 or 38, look no farther than Trad'r Sam for some super stiff umbrella drinks. 5 Star Muni Route.

And since you don't have to tip it costs about the same. Initially the cars were always spotless, and you got dropped off/picked up where you wanted. But of course now I've been in some awfully dirty Waymos and I've had some issues with pick up/drop off in busy locations-most typically where SFMTA has messed everything up. Uber/Lyft just do whatever they want and stop wherever (blocked traffic be damned,) but Waymo appears to be making nice with SFMTA. So sometimes I have to walk a few blocks which sucks when I'm on crutches. Also the seats in back don't really fold down so I don't recommend using a Waymo to move. Yeah I tried it. It's hard to fit big stuff in a Waymo. I'm sure that's by design. Maybe someday there will be a Waymo box truck...just hoping.

Not sure if it was bc of the North Beach festival today but it was rough - the seats are surprisingly uncomfortable in the back, very upright and stiff bucket seats, smooth driving offsets this somewhat I guess - acquiesce to all vehicles - also doesn't Waymo know that when you signal here, no one lets you in?!? We were very late to dinner, plan ahead. - Waymo = Way More. Pricey! From Chinatown/Little Italy to Hayes Valley it was $33.76. - it was a little dingy, moonroof had prints, stains and there was a used cup in the door. Prob the street fair folk today. The lows outweigh the highs for me for now. A novelty and they are still ironing out all the software kinks. Whole fleet can't operate on freeways currently.

I suppose that if the goal was to create a station devoid of loitering, then this was a great design. It's simply....basic. However, the best part of this station is the basic design. The old station required passengers going west (along Grand Avenue) to walk a large flight of stairs onto a busy overpass, cross that road and then walk down the overpass to Grand Avenue. The new station has a pedestrian underpass -- allowing you to get to Grand Avenue or Airport Blvd. much more safely and quickly. It really is appreciated after the sun goes down! I used to hate the old station. In fact, I preferred to drive from my home (in Palo Alto) just to avoid the hassle -- even though I had to pay for parking. This station has caused me to prefer taking Caltrain to any meetings in downtown South San Francisco. It's close enough (on foot) to most areas of the downtown that I don't need to bring a bike on the train. While I think that the station is simple (and the cost overruns and construction delays were annoying), this is a very nice and basic train station that might be overlooked for its simplicity. However, sometimes, "basic" is better than complex. It is in this case.
