One of MUNI's most crowded bus routes! This bus route takes me directly to SFSU from Mansell and San Bruno in about an hour. If you happen to be taking this route during peak hours, the first bus or two is usually very crowded. I'm a regular passenger on the 29 now that I am attending San Francisco State University. Since the 29 also passes by several schools along the way, it does tend to be crowded with students everyday. Otherwise being the route taking students between San Francisco State University and the Bayview District. It'll be very nice to see more improved bus frequency on this route. read more

This is the bus that takes you to Baker Beach. It also takes you back from Baker Beach. That is why it gets 5 Stars. The 29 Sunset is actually kind of a cool route since it's Northern Terminus is way up in the Presidio and it goes through the Richmond, Golden Gate Park, the Sunset (on Sunset) and then swings past Lake Merced, through Ingleside and Excelsior, hits John McLaren Park and then chugs on over to where Candlestick used to be. That's a killer route. You could legitimately see a lot of The City going from one end to the other. I'm tempted to give this whole ride a shot. OK, I digress. I use this to get up and down from Baker Beach. It's super handy because you can jump right up from the beach and easily connect with your West-East bus of choice. I like the 1-California, but you can get the 38-Geary, 31-Balboa, 5-Fulton and a few others if you so choose. And, that's just North of Golden Gate Park. By the way, two pro-tips: First, if you need to run up and hit a liquor store on a Beach Day, good 'ole Tiger Liquors is on Clement and you can go up and down pretty quick if you time it right. Also, if you are heading home but want to hit a bar before catching the 1 or 38, look no farther than Trad'r Sam for some super stiff umbrella drinks. 5 Star Muni Route. read more

This is the most beautiful bus route in San Francisco. Catch it at 19th and Lincoln (just two blocks from N-Judah and lots of great restaurants). Ride it up through Golden Gate Park, the Richmond, and some unbelievable views in the Presidio to magnificent Crissy Field. Bring a camera and sit on the right side of the bus to catch some great shots of the beach, Golden Gate Park, SF Skyline, the Palace of Fine Arts, and Alcatraz. Choose a seat next to the cleanest window and get your lens right up next to it to minimize the effects of glare, dirt, and graffiti. (Even if you hate smelly public transportation, you really ought to check out this route at least once - you can really take in the sights when you don't have to drive. And you don't have to worry about parking, unnecessary air pollution, or tracking sand all over your car interior.) read more

29 Sunset was a nightmare bus line when I was a kid and is the Walking Dead of SF public transportation today. Gee, you know, a funny thing happened not too long ago. 29 Sunset buses that were behind schedule or off duty were taking unauthorized shortcuts through the quiet residential streets of the SF Richmond District. Many of them were speeding where kids played and where elderly and disabled people were trying to cross the street. The drivers clearly knew they were breaking the law and many had smirks on their faces because, no matter how many times you reported them, they still got away with it. Fast forward a few years and the SF DPW and PG&E have several blocks in the area closed for weeks and completely torn apart due to collapsed sewer lines and damaged underground cables. Sinkholes had formed and large areas of asphalt were warped. Hmm, do you think that continuously driving a multi-ton public transportation vehicle that's supposed to be on a 4-6 lane road had anything to do with it?!?!?!?! I'd give this bus line 1 star but MUNI has been doing a better job of curbing the off-route 29 Sunset drivers...for now. read more

The city desperately needs a rapid version of this bus, to address bus bunching, and to run it more frequently, especially during peak hours. So many students and youth rely on this bus to get to school and it is not serving San Franciscans who depend on it. read more

This bus has made me late for school more than once. They seem to get bunched up, all going in one direction. If you miss your bus at the wrong time, you are stuck waiting for 50+ minutes for the next one, despite the muni website saying that it is "due". Then it is either overcrowded, or just skips you. I used to dislike the 29-bus just because it would take FOREVER to arrive, but now it comes every 10-15 minutes (well, most of the time). Also, if you're one of those people who complain about the bus being late all the time, well, has it ever occurred to you that YOU'RE the one who shows up late to the bus stop? I always check nextbus.com on my phone and the bus is right on schedule. ;-) Anyways, I had an unusually bad headache today (unusual b/c I almost never get headaches) and I could not wait to get out of my night class and go home. Thank goodness class ended early (9pm) and I headed straight to the 29 bus stop. I checked NextBus and saw that the 29 would arrive in nine minutes (sweet! by the time I get to the stop, 7 minutes should pass). Well, the bus came on time and the bus driver was the sweetest man ever! He SANG the requested bus stops. That's right folks, if you were to request a stop, he would sing the bus stop. E.g. I've only ridden the 29 a few times. Each time, I had to wait quite a while for the bus to arrive, but the flip side was that none of these buses were crowded, which is rare for runs spaced out this far. I like the design of this route and the diversity of neighborhoods it goes through. Muni could have done a better job of numbering. The 28 and 29 share a route part of the time; bus lines that run at the same stops shouldn't have similar numbers because that increases confusion among riders (like the 47 and 49). Unfortunately Muni does not have sufficient funds to run this highly demanded route. Being from the Bayview area, the 29 does provide a great way to get to the Sunset district, and importantly through Stonestown, etc. Muni did a great job on providing for additional lines and a higher frequency on the 8x lines, but the 29 needs to be looked at as well. When I was a daily rider of the 29, it would be dreadful, and whenever I did visit my friends who attend San Francisco State University, the bus ride from the Bayview district to school would take over an hour. Peak-hours make this 29-route a bit crucial as this bus does get very crowded, WAY too crowded even. Also never rely on "nextbus.com" especially for the 29 route, it truly is unpredictable when it will get to your stop. read more

I normally take this bus to SFSU & anywhere around the Sunset District. PROS: -It's one LONG Muni line that goes almost everywhere in SF besides Downtown. Inbound starts from the Bayview District -- Portola -- Excelsior -- Ingleside -- Merced Heights -- Outer Sunset -- Richmond -- Baker Beach. -It goes lightening fast at night! I had to take this bus from SFSU to Geneva & Mission at 9 PM after my night class. Took nearly 14-17 minutes. CONS: -Always packed from August-May at 6-10 AM & 2:30-6:30 PM, no really it is... Lots of students from middle & high schools, SFSU, & CCSF entirely filled up the bus even on 5 stops. The most annoying thing about the crowded 29 is when they purposely skip your stop when you're waiting with over 4 people. What an uncomfortable ride that frustrates passengers! IMPROVEMENT: -Like really, when can MUNI start running their 60 foot articulated buses for this line during rush hours so that way it wouldn't be that crowded? In my perspective it wouldn't be that bad for a 60 foot bus to run up on MANSELL AVE & try making a right turn on BEVERLY ST. I think they should really test it out, just once! -I would say make the 29 run more often like in every 5 minutes; however, they don't have that many buses to do so. If you're trying to get to 19th Ave. & Irving from Ingleside for instance, you're better off catching the 28 Nineteenth Ave line if you're in a hurry. Soo stay safe! read more

Though the 29 runs a great route...you don't run it enough during peak transit hours. THIS BUS SERVES TWO MAJOR COLLEGES AS WELL AS A MALL AND A BART STATION...please take that into account and start running more buses!!! I know you can't use the extended bus because of the route through narrow neighborhood streets....so the only other option is to run more 29's in the morning 6-10am and evening 4-7pm to accommodate COMFORTABLY all of your patrons. Never came =/ So here I was, being a tourist in San Fran, happily waiting for the 29 to come and stop at lincoln and 19th. 10 mins passed..... 20 mins passed.... 30 mins passed... 35 mins passed... no bus! I ended up walking to the 43 and by the time the 43 came, there was still no outbound 29 in sight! it was a nice/sunny tuesday afternoon! I was on my way to lincoln park, would've been a nice ride on the 29... so happens that the outbound route for this bus doesn't exist! read more

I have to give the 29 4 stars just because it's such a fun people watching, or when busy in the morning, people rubbing experience. I ride between Irving and Balboa Park regularly. This is where most people ride it. In the morning it's about 60% Asian girls headed to State or City, 25% Asian guys headed to State or City, 10% old Chinese ladies, and 5% randomness. Pass-ups are a norm in the morning. So sorry if you were planning to get on at Taraval or Phelan; maybe there'll be room on the next one. Or not. In the evening it's a totally different bus, especially if a group of homies has elected to take a field trip from Bayview to the mall. w00t. The 29 does usually run on schedule in the evening. In the morning, a given bus might or might not show up, and if you are on certain parts of the route (Sunset south of Judah, or on the hill between 19th and Ocean), the bus that shows up might or might not stop for you. So, really, from the "transportation" perspective of "public transportation," it's worth 1 star. But aside from that it's pretty entertaining. I mean, how awesome is it to blow past five consecutive stops, all crowded with people holding out their passes in hope and futility. Especially when they're all old ladies. Ah, schadenfreude! The good: The 29 is the only bus near where I live that will take me directly to school. The bad: The 29 is habitually slow, and waiting for it can often take forever. The GPS at the 29 stop tends to lie, showing earlier (or later) times than it should, and if you're not there right before it's about to show up, you can expect to wait twenty or thirty minutes before it shows up. I've been made late for class a couple times because of this stupid bus. If you have to use the 29, you're stuck, but if you don't, find a different bus! read more

When I rode this line YEARS ago, it was scarce. Like Haley's commet scarce. Kidding. NOT! When it would come it would be chalked full of people. Obnoxious, loud, pick at you for no reason type of people (usually seated towards the back). It's not very efficient either. It takes forever to get from one destination to another because there are so many damn stops. This is during the weekday. Don't even get me started on weekend service. Now that I drive, it seems like the 29 always stalls the lane I'm in when I'm trying to get to the BART station in the morning, or making a right on the street that leads me my apartment. I get so munch anxiety taking this bus. I usually catch the 29 on Mission and Geneva going inbound and it's usually already full when I board. Gets worse after Balboa Park Station. It gets better after stones town. I usually take the 29 in the morning and sometimes it sooo stuffed that I cannot breathe. I am not clausterphobic or anything like that but imagine being shoulder to shoulder with 50 strangers breathing down your neck. The bus makes sudden stops and turns and everyone bumps into eachother. Then you have 1/2 of those people talking loudly on the phone. The 29 makes me hate people. Seriously Muni, would it kill you to get the double-length bus for this route?? After all the damn tickets you collect now, i'm sure funding is not the issue. This review of Muni 29 is so overdue but I must say this bus is slower than the SBS in Singapore. I went to the beach a long time ago and the bus did not show up. What is the deal with that? Even the LACMTA 460 is faster than this. I do not have that much to like about this route because of its poor performance. IDK why but they should invest in upgrading the fleet because its not the bus that I expected in suburban SF. It would make sense if you try to take the 28 and walk a few miles. I live in the Sunset and commute to the Western Addition/ Lower Pac Heights for work. The 29 to the 38L beats the alternative route (N Judah to Parnassus, then switch to UCSF shuttles) by about ten minutes most mornings. The problem with it is that there are frequently 15 minute gaps between buses. I'm also curious as to how well it would work to get from the Sunset to Candlestick Park and back on a 49er gameday. read more

One of the longest bus routes in San Francisco, the 29 one of the most popular buses taken by many students of all ages. With that being said, this is also one of the most crowded. The entire route takes nearly an hour and a half so if you really need to get to Bayview or Richmond, consider another route or getting a ride from a friend. Me and the 29 have a storied past... some may call it an epic rivalry... one where I come out on the losing side after it's all said and done... I really doubt that's epic, but one of these days I WILL win. Probably not. I use to take this to high school but realized very early that I would always be late, so I ended up taking the 23 instead. That's where it all started. That's when the pain began and the voices in my head became louder. It seems like 99% of the time I catch the 29, whether it was in the past or present, I have to wait AT LEAST 15-20 minutes and it's 75% full, to the point where I can't sit down until two blocks from my destination. I wish I was exaggerating... but I kid you not. The 29 is also filled with old people (occasionally with their signature old-woman shopping cart not folded and always in your way) and students (in every size, age, and shape, accompanied with their backpacks that they NEVER FUCKING TAKE OFF!)... and wannabe thugs going to Stonestown. And the bus stops at EVERY! FUCKING! STOP! Especially on Sunset... a packed bus full, stopping at every stop from Sloat to fucking Irving. You would think the 29 would be faster than the 28 since Sunset is generally a faster street with less traffic and less stops than 19th Avenue. But you'd probably be wrong most of the time. If you wanna get somewhere on time, don't catch the 29. Even though the 28 sucks, your best bet would be to catch that, especially if you're getting to Richmond. The 18 might be better... but since I rarely take that bus, I really don't know. The capacity might slim down if you're heading the opposite direction and you get past Balboa Park, but the neighborhood definitely gets worse. read more

more like the twenty-never! This is the biggest reason that I could no longer live in the Presidio. The 29 seems to be the first line that bus drivers call in sick on, and in the Presidio seems to have some sort of weird scheduling - like sometimes the driver decides to stop at California, or decides that after you've waited 45 minutes for the bus, she needs to go make a pitstop at Tiger liquors. I'm usually guaranteed a seat since I wait at one of the first few stops going outbound. It gets filled up pretty quickly along the way with all sorts of folks, young, old and in-between. Never really had any major issues with this bus. There was probably only one time where it took days to come, but other than that one day, it's been quite consistent on arriving. Going back to Bayview, it's really jam packed. But after San Bruno Ave area, the bus gets really empty and I can finally breathe. No, no, no, no, I rode this Flying Dutchman of public transit for 4 years in the '90's and I no longer fear damnation. The 29 Sunset is not all a scenic romp around the Park. Rather, it assures an endless depressing crawl from Balboa Park Station and writhes on for hours and hours until it finally drops you somewhere on Geary, where all your friends have already gone home thinking you were too lazy to get out. The 29 Sunset is waiting 72 minutes in the morning rain and then being late for school despite getting up early to catch it. The 29 Sunset is the MUNI route that is always packed, always late, and frequently with a special sauce of extra unpleasant. Oh the stories could go on - the crazy ranter, chuckled at by the entire bus until he pronounced that "the end of the world was neigh and those that didn't die would be (kitchen knife appears from filthy sweat pants) STABBED!" This bus line usually works just fine from Noriega to State. The only problem is that during peak hours like from 7-8 a.m the bus is too packed, so if you have class at 8:10 or something i would recommend trying to get on the bus before 7:30. This is a stop where you cant wait until the last minute and if you try you may find that the next bus comes in 20-30 mins. About once a week the bus is late or sometimes two come up at the same time...why??? bottom line is if you have an option ride something else but if you dont then its fine. read more
