I was so excited to not only see there was a Mayan museum in the heart of the resort area of Cancun. And one that has an actual Mayan dig site with an authentic temple. We were only able to do a very quick trip to the museum before we had to fly out, but within the course of an hour, we were able to have a great walk through the (humid) jungle archeological site seeing the various buildings and the temple while also avoiding the tons of wild iguanas running around the path. They did a great job keeping the trail clean and well marked to make sure you don't stray off or get lost. Signage is in both English and Spanish so you can learn about the various structures and their meaning/purpose. It was great being able to see these ancient structures and learn about the rich culture of the area. We then did a speed run through the museum. And, honestly, I'm glad we didn't have much time for that. It was so hot and humid and the building's air conditioning was broken so even if we wanted to spend time there, it would have been so uncomfortable the entire time. There are countless artifacts both from the dig site outside and throughout Mexico and tons of resources to learn about the history of the Mayan people, but the vast majority of the signs are in Spanish only. So, if you cannot read the language, you might find yourself missing out on a lot of the information. But, honestly, everything on display is so fascinating, I think you would still get plenty out of just looking at the items not being 100% sure what it was you were looking at. I just wish the A/C was working. In all, this museum is small, but it packs so much within its grounds. I would absolutely say this is a must visit location if you are staying at any of the resorts in the area. And I can't wait to come back on our next trip &, hopefully, be able to spend a longer, more comfortable time in the actual museum portion of the space. read more

Mayan ruins on the Cancun Hotel Strip! Muy authentico! This place is pretty sweet. It's a cool building, with cool architecture, but not too terribly practical. You have to get all the way to the top floor to see the exhibits. At the ticket booth reads a sign, "The galleries are hot. We have no air condition. No refunds." They were right. The gallery is up on the third floor. No, the elevator didn't work. Instead they had a corkscrew ramp that sent me going round and round and round in circles to get to the hot gallery at the top. The gallery was pretty small, with some pretty cool artifacts, and a human skull, with some awesome carvings, and some jewelry. All Mayan. So cool. There's also a temporary exhibit that had portraits of working Mexicans posing in the photos with the tools of their trades. Outside, is a super fun nature walk along an improved trail that takes you past several small ruins (one with painting still in the interior). The path terminates at a half pyramid that you can walk around, but not up. There's a small bookstore that seems lacking at the exit. It's a fun, fairly inexpensive way to get some art and culture on your trip to Cancun, to get to see ruins without having to go way out into the jungle is pretty special. read more

Great cheap and easy activity to do after lunch when it's super hot and bright. We came here one afternoon to get a break from the mid-day heat and sun. It was a nice and easy visit. This is in the hotel zone. Our 7 year old kid enjoyed walking through the outdoor part through the jungle (searching for iguanas). It was nice and shady and peaceful. The indoor part was fine. This is a great cheap and easy activity to do after lunch when it's super hot and bright, to stay out of the sun! We could have taken a bus for 12 pesos or $1 USD from our hotel, but we didn't realize. read more

Great museum!! About $4 to get in (US dollar) per adult. It is a good sized museum with wonderful artifacts! There are 2 levels: top has artifacts on display.. they are all extremely interesting and does a great job showcasing how smart and advanced the Mayan were. Bottom level has an archeological site. You walk through a small portion of the jungle and walk through ancient ruins. At the end of the trail, there is one of the last pyramids in the Cancun Hotel Zone! The walk is about 10 mins round trip. Many mosquitoes and iguanas.. but I mean, it is a jungle!!!! The museum on the upper level is very accessible. The archeological site is all a dirt path with tree roots growing everywhere. Loved it!!!!!!! This is a hidden GEM!!!!! (Also has a gift shop with the coldest AC) The bus on the hotel zone also drops you off right in front. read more

Disorganized and poorly maintained. Admission is 100 pesos (credit card accepted if the machine works), and staff at the entrance were unhelpful. The museum requires walking up six ramps--elevators have been "under maintenance" for ages--and there's no A/C at the top. Restrooms are on the ground floor, hidden behind lockers. The outdoor ruins are shaded but involve a 10-minute walk on a rocky path to reach the pyramid. Nice to see ruins in Cancún, but honestly, Tulum or Chichén Itzá offer a much better experience. read more

Wonderful (air conditioned) exhibit of both Mayan artifacts and modern art, with access to the San Miguelito archeological site. This is a worthwhile place to visit if you have a few free hours in Cancun and don't have time to visit Chichen Itza. Admission comes out to about $4 USD, which is a great price for what the exhibit is. There is a lot of information (in Spanish and English) on the history of the Mayans, the Yucatán Peninsula, and local mythology. I learned a lot on my visit. The exit of the exhibit will lead you to the archeological site, which is a tropical walking path you take at your own pace. The pyramid is quite small, about the size of a 2 bd house, but still nice to visit. The gift shop is also a good stop for all types of cheap, yet quality souvenirs. If you can pull yourself away from having margaritas on the beach, take a cheap cab and go. ;) read more

Great stop for your morning or afternoon if you are looking for something to do that is outside your resort but not far on travel or time. This location is steps away from popular resorts like Hotel Emporio, Royal Uno, Seadust, and The Royal Islander. It is also right across the street from a shopping complex, excursions park, and gas station. The fee to get in is very small, I think it was like $4-5 a person when we visited. Inside access includes a small museum that showcases a sampling of Mayan artifacts with a good amount of historic narrative woven in as well as a small art gallery featuring local artists. Outside, you find a couple of trails spread throughout what used to be a Mayan community complex. You will see ruins that show a few government buildings, living quarters, and a small stair step temple occupied by the Mayans at one point in time. Be on the lookout for local fauna - lots of reptiles and birds make this little sanctuary home. The outside paths are shaded by a small little forest that makes it feel like you are in the middle of the Yucatan jungle instead of the Cancun strip. Great stop for families and those who are looking too add a little adventure to the usual pool/beach/buffet Cancun vacation. read more

We walked to the museum from our hotel and it was a nice experience. There are lockers available as most large bags/water bottles are not allowed. Seeing the ruins was really neat and we were surprised by several iguanas along our way. The alebrije sculpture displays were beautiful! This museum is located in the Hotel Zone in Cancun and was right near my hotel. They have some intriguing and beautiful pottery and sculptures from various Mayan cities in the region. The pottery pieces are incredibly well-preserved and sophisticated. The building which houses the museum is rather attractive: it was designed by architect Alberto García Lascurain and was inaugurated in 1982. It only costs $80 MXN (about $4 US) to enter. Beside the exhibits on display in the museum, you also gain access to The San Miguelito Archaeological Zone, which contains some Mayan ruins. I think the whole place is worth a visit if you're interested in adding a little culture to your Cancun vacation. read more

This museum is a gem, easily accessible from the hotel zone in Cancun. We took the bus for $1 USD from our hotel. The buses run frequently, and the drivers were all super nice and helpful. Admission is only about $3.50, and they accept credit cards. Lockers are free - you can bring in your purse but no backpacks. The museum is beautiful. The exhibits are on the second level. On the first level, you can access Mayan ruins. The ruins are nestled among the trees...it's a beautiful trail to walk through and the ruins are well marked with explanations. So, while you might not want to leave the beautiful Cancun beaches....it's a great place to visit to gain a deeper appreciation for the Mayan history. If you are limited in time, do this museum and you can skip the neighboring El Rey ruins. We did both (refer to my review of EL Rey). read more

Raining or not this is a nice, small museum with a great collection of artifacts and an outdoor area with several ruins. We have stopped at several Mayan Museums including in Merida and Campeche. This is third on the list - with Campeche first and Merida second. Yet, this museum is not to be missed - especially if you like local art, culture and history. We walked the paths of the outdoor exhibits in the rain. Very nice. Primitive and thought provoking. The building is also very nice, designed with exhibits on the second floor and parts of the building shading an open first floor Garden area. read more

Rich in culture and education Well, this was really an experience. I brought plenty of pesos with me, so I opted to take a day trip on what they call "the hotel zone" (or zona hotelera in Spanish). I started in the morning at about 10 am. As I stated in my review of Lomas Travel (check it out), I learned that the bus ride that covers the hotel zone is less than $1 American dollar (I think it was maybe 12 pesos). I rode the bus to the El Rey (check out the review) and then walked to the beach. From there, I walked to the Museo (I could have waited on the bus but I was in a walking mood) and visited the 7-eleven across the street. After that, I visited the mall, stopped at the souvenir shops, and found something to eat before heading back to my hotel (by bus). I was not overly exhausted and it wasn't night fall yet. The sun was setting but I still beat the dark. While in Mexico - visit something other than the hotel AND try to do as the natives do!! This is what I was thinking when I left, but I was surprised to find it was still very much "Americanized". Back to the Museo - the entrance was pretty nice and it had a guard nearby. He didn't speak much English at all - as much of the staff didn't (I know enough Spanish to communicate so it worked). I paid at the entrance and it was about 75 pesos (100 pesos is $5 USD). NOTE: if you use USD there may be a conversion fee AND they give you change in pesos. They have restrooms and lockers at the entrance, which came in handy because backpacks, camera bags, and tripods are not allowed. AND, that is definitely enforced. I had a tripod and bag, so I had to store it in the lockers (they are free to use). I was tapped on the shoulder because I missed the sign Also, near the entrance is the gift shop. I looked around to see what I should take away. They had some nice books - reading material and t-shirts. Missing was food or beverages. Once inside, I stopped to look at the sculptures and art. I was able to read some of the translated signage. I was delighted to learn about the culture, as that was my main mission. I had Chichen Itza on my list of things to do but I figured at least I could see the pyramid and some of the Myan Ruins here. Just in case I wasn't able to make it (and it turns out that I wasn't). After a few steps into the Museo, I was following a sign to outside. Now - this part of the story gets creepy (at least for me - because I didn't do my research). There weren't many people on the trail and it was definitely a hike!!! There was one other family (other than myself of course) on the trail. So, here I was - now outside on how much or how long of a trail, I did not know. Now, to be specific the trail was more like a wooded area and I could hear what I thought to be Iguana's moving about pretty rapidly. I was hopeful it wasn't a snake. So, I didn't stand still very long. There was also some weird nest scattered about, at least a nest that I hadn't seen before. To add to my increasingly weird feeling, no workers or staff were outside (and I hadn't met up with the family yet - the one that was on the trail as well). It was extremely hot on this summer day, and although I thought that I had remembered to bring everything - I didn't bring water. I took pictures (pretty quickly and took everything all in - again quickly). When I met up with the family, they were coming from the other direction and a quick few questions let me know that I wasn't far from the pyramid and that the trail would wrap back around and I would go out the same way I entered. This of course was done in my broken Spanglish and I thought that's what they said so I continued. Finally...the pyramids!!!!!!!!!!!!! And pretty much the end. All in all, it was a good experience and I wish I had done my research before entering, I feel it would have been more of a good experience if I had. I was tired but I pushed through. We really enjoyed this museum! We ended up staying much longer than we anticipated! The outside Archeological (ruins) were great! Keep your eyes open for the cute iguanas roaming around in their natural habitat. If you want the informative experience of taking one of those all day LONG tours but with a very short drive/walk from the hotel zone this is it!! I have gone on one of those all day bus trips and it was good but this time around I did not want to be gone all day and I am glad we didn't. The exhibit signs outside are all in Spanish and English. This is not true for the inside exhibits which are sadly in Spanish only. Lockers are plentiful, free and mandatory for just about everything (including purses and water). Roughly $3 per person and small kids were free. All credit cards accepted. There is a free parking lot in front off the Main Street, so you do not have to drive up and down the street searching for a spot. read more

Our first attempt to come here was on a Monday when we got to Cancun but they were closed. We came here again the next day but the archeological site was already closed so we only had access to the museum but paid the same full-price entrance fee. The museum itself was quite boring and useless since 90% of the info were in Spanish. It's a very small museum and there's really not much to see. read more

Small museum at the end of the Cancun hotel zone strip. Costs 75 pesos to enter. The museum has a gallery section with some artifacts and has a walkway with some ruins in the back. While not as impressive as say the more famous pyramids, still interesting. It's a nice way to get some culture while wanting to relax if you don't want to make a long trip. Even tough part of the museum was closed for renovations they had two galleries with artifacts; carvings, statues, jewelry, bowls, totems... for different eras of history. Those were definitely impressive and worth the trip. Only thing to note is that apart from the main signs per section that are bilingual, the rest of the information is in Spanish only. read more

I'm not a big museum person, but this place is slightly interesting and can be visited in an hour or so. There's 3 exhibition rooms upstairs, and there's not really any order or structure to it. If you don't know Spanish, you'll just be looking at the items and reading summaries. The better part in my opinion is the ruins area, where you will see actual structures, and the pyramid at the end is worth it. I didn't go to Chichen Itza, so this was the closest I would get to an almost conserved structure. read more

This place is wonderful. The artifacts are displayed nicely. The campus has both indoor and outdoor artifacts. Upstairs you'll find pottery, drawings and other artwork that made up the Mayan culture. Photos are allowed without flash.Downstairs outside has a walking path that winds around through ruins of houses and Palaces. In Addition to this there is a garden area with colorful statues of different creatures which is perfect for those facebook photos. I would recommend using mosquito repellent if walking the path as that I did get several bites. Go when they open to avoid crowds. This is definitely a must see attraction. read more

Great place to take a breather from the Caribbean heat, the parties and the alcohol. We went just as the bus dropped us from our daylong tour at Chichen Itza, so for us it was an extension of a day of culture. It's right next to our resort, so it was super convenient. There are two parts to this museum. There is the outdoor part mimicking a rain forest, with imitation ruin pyramids amidst an endless curtain of trees. If you love animals, you will enjoy running into iguanas everywhere in this garden all the way up to the outskirts of the Royal Caribbean. If you fear these creatures, don't worry! They are more afraid of us than we are of them. The other part of this museum is indoors on the top floor. It's a lovely place, reminded me of The Getty in Pacific Palisades back home because you have a view of the ocean from there. It was a nice review of Mayan history complementary to the great tour from which we had just returned. read more

Maya museum is located in the hotel district - Cancun. The building and grounds are architecturally attractive. The museum consists of two different parts - a new building that houses Mayan artifacts and an archaeological site - San Miguelito. The museum is a bit small but houses a nicely displayed selection of items. The San Miguelito site is a nice gravel path walk way through the ruins of several homes, out buildings and a small step pyramid. Well worth a visit and entrance is only about $5 USD. read more

We had no time to go to Chichen Itza so we came here to see the pyramid. We came during the week and there was so many school kids around. The museum has only one floor to explore besides the archeological site. The hiking in the archeological site was amazing to explore the Mayan ruins which I really enjoyed. When I went, there was a photography exhibition that I liked more than the museum itself. You can expect to spend less than an hour to cover everything in the museum. The only downside is that it doesn't have a coffee shop and they don't sell water in the gift shop as we were really thirsty but somehow survived! read more

We did this tour as part of a group from the Royal Caribbean and Royal Islander resorts, having a Royal Resorts employee, Fernando, being our tour guide. It was a wonderful tour through the ruins and then went inside to see many artifacts, my favorite being the incense burners. Our tour was a little over an hour, but a self guided tour would probably be shorter. I recommend wearing pants and long sleeves as you will be wandering along pathways in the jungle. The pathways are well marked and easy to follow, with signs and descriptions along the way in English and Spanish. The inside part of the tour only has information written in Spanish, but well worth going through to see the extensive amount of items in the collection....that is where the incense burners are. The cost of the tour is 59 pesos and they only accept Mexican money. The museum is located across the street from Captain's Cove. read more

Beautiful display of Mayan artifacts (indoor and air conditioned - BONUS!!!) the grounds and excavation site are stunning. We also saw several iguanas lounging on the sidewalks of the museum grounds - cool! Inexpensive and well designed - it's a must see. We stopped here on a whim, just wanting to kill some time on our last day in Cancun. We were very pleasantly surprised, the museum is of world class caliber. They have extensive exhibits that show many artifacts and explain the daily lives of the Mayan people of the Yucatan. On the grounds themselves are some ruins that are not that impressive, but the wooded walk and beautiful paths to get there are very enjoyable and romantic to relax and stroll through. We toured the museum as it was a short walk from our hotel. There was no charge for the kids, only for the adults in our group. There were many artifacts that appeared to be Mayan or Incan and the museum was also air conditioned which was great getting out of the sun for awhile. One of the better bargains in the Hotel Zone. Take the bus. It is easy and cheap. This is a nice air conditioned museum that provides an overview of Mayan history and culture. There are also ruins on the site and a nice shady trail with plenty of iguanas and birds. All in all a relaxing way to spend a couple of hours if you don't want to hike around El Rey or run the all day gauntlet to Chichen Itza. read more
