I dragged my brother here on our Barcelona trip at the end of 2010. I was worried that art wasn't his thing and he would be bored, but I think by the end it was I begging for us to leave (my feet hurt!). The Picasso Museum is a must see for all art lovers. I had no idea how wildly different Picasso's style was between his childhood years to later in life. Most of us are only familiar with his outlandish pieces and cubism style. Some may be familiar with his Blue Period, but Picasso was painting even before that. We probably waited for 30 mins to get in and arrived as soon as they opened. So plan on being here for a while. read more

Call me a snot but I've always preferred Manet to Monet and thought 'ol P-man was a bit over rated. Until today. This place shows soo much of his earlier work along with his academic work. I cannot express to you how moving it was to see some of the less, I suppose, refined work from his days in Barceloneta or his extremely morbid work to include my favorites: - The Dead New Born - At the Side of a Dead Man - A Burial in the Country - La Diseuse - El Final del Número It also showcased some of his ceramics which he picked up while living in France. Do also check out the Vinyetes al Front, a temporary exhibit that is by no coincidence about anti-fascism. This week I have heard nothing but talk of political unrest. Apparently ol Pman was big with Ubú, Mayakovsky and other artists in the Army of Art against war. This is a way less busy exhibit but by no means less valuable. Very graphic in nature but well worth if it if you are a history geek like myself. Other useful info, 10 euros if you are over 25; 6 if you are under. Really close to the metro line and kinda easy to miss in my opinion but you'll probably see ample street vendors around the entrance. Otherwise, take your time and use the WC on the way out... clean and free ones are like gold! read more

To my delight I was able to get into Museu Picasso for free! I believe it was advertised that students still have to pay a reduced rate but either the advert is wrong or the cashier was very nice. The wait to get in can be very long. I waited I think around 30-40 minutes on a Sunday afternoon, though I've heard of people who waited longer. But it is worth it for the amount of time you can spend inside. Anyway Museu Picasso is definitely not a museum to miss for art lovers visiting Barcelona. It went chronologically through his life and was really interesting; I particularly loved the groupings of similar themes. I really loved the multiple re-interpretations of Las Meninas by Velasquez that Picasso had done - there are 58 in total and the museum has all of them (though I can't remember if they show them all)! I didn't love the audiotour - though it was very interesting, it seemed to skip around a lot with different paintings and you'd have to go back a lot to things you saw before, making it all a little confusing to follow. In all, a cool museum, worth a visit, and a re-visit if you really love your Picasso. Don't go when you're really worn out, which is the mistake I made a couple times for museums on my BCN trip! read more

We saw only the collection, not the special exhibition. It was a gorgeous collection. I am completely in awe of much of Picasso's early work after having seen it. The tiny scenes he painted on 2x5-sized pieces of wood (sometime with canvas pressed on it) were extraordinary little paintings. I am not into his later work, but I could still enjoy some of the smaller rooms where the museum display "process" pieces showing his progress on a singular theme in sketches and full or half-size paintings. Their room flow sometimes didn't make sense and we found ourselves looping back around ways we'd previously traveled. The museum staff spoke english and were quite helpful. read more

Being born and raised in New York City, i always knew Picasso as that guy with the funny angular weird drawings. Little did I know, he was a breathtakingly talented child artist. goign to this museum really grounded my understanding of Picasso and I highly suggest visiting this place to ANYONE. I came a few hours before closing (few as in 2-3) and the line consisted of 3 people infront of me. You can store your things in little "free" cabinets (free because you put in a euro, but get it back when you leave) I didn't get the audio guide, but still felt very happy to go. The English posts were sufficient and simply watching a child turn to an adult-- Picasso's artistic coming of age story, was amazing/self-explanatory if you go with kids.... uh... theres some sexy-time drawings up as well. read more

Picasso is one of my favorite modern artists and I studied his work quite a bit in college so this was a must see while in Barcelona. This museum does a great job with showing the progression of Picasso's earlier works. But the standout of the collection is "Las Meninas" and the studies painted as part of Picasso's homage to Velazquez' painting. Other highlights were "La Salchichona" - the striking painting of a woman in the traditional Spanish mantilla and the ceramics collection. Worth a few hours of your time but not to be mistaken for a comprehensive collection of Picasso's body of work. read more

The museum entirely dedicated to Picasso. If you are a fan of his work, you must visit this place. Their very extensive collection is quite an eye-opener for getting to know Picasso. The wait was extremely long though. We probably waited for over an hour to get inside. I especially loved his series of interpretations of La Meninas. Admittedly, I am not the biggest fan of art in the world, but I have traveled to various other art exhibits and enjoyed myself. I just felt like most of Picasso's famous art was off in Madrid or other locations, and what has left over were rudimentary sketches and several versions of the same painting. I guess thats what happens when you dedicate an entire museum to a single artist. Its small, and extremely difficult to find. You need to be good at maps and weave through the small brick alleys. Unless you're a huge art buff, I wouldn't recommend making the stop. read more

While I wouldn't cite Picasso as one of my favourite artists, I certainly have an appreciation for his work, and figured it'd be worth checking out the museum to see his work first hand and up close. I must admit, I was slightly underwhelmed by the experience. The collection felt rather small, and it's pretty easy to get through the entire museum rather quickly. There was a temporary exhibition on which was interesting, but felt like a whole lot of the same thing. My biggest complaint however would be in the layout and design of the museum. There isn't a clear route to make it through each of the rooms and as a result we found ourselves walking back and forth between rooms to discover other corridors and sections with work we hadn't seen. Clear way finding would go a long way to improving the overall experience. We also opted not to pay for the audio guide which perhaps would have made the experience a little more insightful, but in all honesty it's hard to imagine it being worth the added cost. And while it was neat to see Picasso's earlier, more "traditional" work, I was surprised at the seeming lack of more recent work. I suppose I expected more variety and much more of his cubist art. You're also not allowed to take photos of the artwork, which seems a bit silly to me. I suppose they'd prefer you to buy the replicas in the gift shop. All in all, not a *bad* museum by any respect, but not the greatest. Pro tip: there's a discounted admission price for those under the age of 25. Take advantage of it, if you can! read more

This museum was nothing special, to be honest. It's nice enough, but I'd suggest that you spend the money only if you really appreciate Picasso. I will admit that I saw some of his older work for the first time and did enjoy it. I ended up purchasing some prints from the gift shop and love them on my wall. This was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Spain. Some helpful locals gave us directions to the place, which sits in a small corridor. We knew we had arrived when we saw the line-up outside, but the line-up actually moved very quickly. I really loved the museum and all of the works inside. It was incredible to see the polished, classic work Picasso did in art school and the way his style changed over the years. It's a decently-sized art museum, two levels, and I actually loved the building the museum is housed in. I spent almost as much time looking at the architecture as I did admiring the paintings! The audio tour was a cheap addition to the regular ticket price and well worth it. The walkie-talkie type device was full of extra information and quick facts. If I get a chance to go to Barcelona again, I'm not sure I would re-visit this museum, but it was very worth it to see all of the Picasso artwork at least once. read more

I knew it was a smaller museum, so I was worried about cranking through the space in 2.5 hours. It took less than 2 to comfortably see the entire property. They featured a lot of his earlier works, in his formative years, and in my mind, surprisingly few of both the Rose period and his Modernist (Cubist) period. The flow of the spaces isn't necessarily intuitive, and with the chronological flow of pieces, it really needed to be. Side rooms jumped timeframes, and felt like afterthoughts. The area for Las Meninas was definitely the best organized, as it guided you through his thought process, and it was fascinating, but most of the greatest hits are elsewhere on display, leaving the character building pieces, but not necessarily the known pieces. I think there has to be a better way to organize all of it. I didn't feel like it was done when I got to the last room, and the lack of closure was rather disturbing. This was an absolutely delightful building, and delightful neighborhood. I came early in the morning, and wandered around the little streets while waiting for the museum to open, and I was just enchanted. So many charming storefronts, and I got the best picture of a group of schoolchildren heading to the museum, complete with dusty morning sun filter for added atmosphere. This was a decent-sized collection, considering that many of his most seminal works are in other locations. I found it all quite interesting, and I think they've laid it out very well so that a non-art person will find it very accessible and informative. read more

One of the best museums in Barcelona, especially if you are interested in Picasso's earlier work and watching him evolve in to the Avant-Garde cubist we know him as. Of particular interest is the in the permanent exhibit is a study of Picasso's artistic interpretation of Diego Velázquez's "Las Meninas." The changing exhibits are always inspiring. The building of the museum itself is amazing to look at and adds to the whole experience. The only thing keeping this from 5 stars is that the museum is missing works from the Spanish Civil War, many of Picasso's most important pieces. read more

3 words for this place. Lame, lame and lame. I was there on Tuesday in April. As far I know that's not exactly hi season for tourism but this place was packed to the point that there were crowds standing in front of everything. It cost €11 which is almost as much as Prado or Reina Sofia in Madrid and this place just doesn't compare. The crowds were so bad that you could barely move from one painting to the next. The info was minimal about these works and the small amount of information and background that was offered was so badly written that it was unclear what they were talking about or reffering to. The building is beautiful but almost all if it is off limits with ropes and tape herding masses of people through the exhibits. There are few places to sit. I give it a second star because the building is great and hey, it's Picasso even if this isn't his greatest work. read more

I was lucky to be there on Thursday because the museum is free every Thursday after 18:00. You can reserve tickets 4 days in advance online and you must! Otherwise you'll miss it. When I checked the website on Monday at 12:05am, the first 1 hour tickets were gone! I got 19:00 slot tickets. It was amazing to see his real work! read more

Picasso is one of my favorite artists, and alot of his work has inspired my own personal stuff. I love the creatitvity and symbolism, so I had to come here. The line was really long, but it was worthwhile to me to come and see it. There's just an appreciation of something that is so visually capitivating that it evokes emotion and feeling that sometimes can not be expressed into words. I like walking around and imaging what the artist must be feeling or thinking while they were creating these pieces. read more

His early stuff was great! I espesically love his "science and charity" painting. If you looked at it from the left to center; the bed looks short. However, if you look at it from the far right, it will look long. Genius! I didn't care for his later works. Just look like he didn't care anymore. read more

They did an incredible job of displaying his growth and change as an artist throughout this lifetime. I love that it was curated as a timeline because it gave me a great view and perspective of him not just as an artist but as a person. I did go for the audio and once again it really help me enjoyed a museum so much more. The neighborhood is so charming and just walking to and from the museum was a treat itself. read more

It's not the easiest museum to find in Barcelona. It's also not the cheapest or most time consuming. If you absolutely have to see all things Picasso then this place would be your heaven. Not being a huge Picasso fan but wanting to check it out anyway meant it was just ok for me. Probably not worth a visit for most tourists I'd say. read more

This Picasso Museum is impressive and I am only taking off a star because of their no photos/film policy in the museum. It's a winding, meandering space. There's a lot of work from Picasso's early student years, and his early time in Paris. You could sense the jovial, freewheeling times in Paris. Then there is work from the Blue Period after his artist friend committed suicide. There's a lot of his ceramics and pottery, which is endearing but seemed like hobby art. I really enjoyed Las Meninas! There's a piece that looks like Guernica. I forget what the name is. I like his abstract, colorful work during the maturation of his career. His early work sheds light that he has real talent to do realistic pieces. Earlier he did portraits and landscapes. There's also some sketches and drawings. Very wonderful museum if you like Picasso. For me, Picasso is dear. I remember doing a small research project in a high school Spanish class and learning about the Blue Period and Guernica. Here's to Pablo Picasso! read more

Wonderful museum in the old part of Barcelona. Consisting of 5 palais joint together to make this museum possible, you will see a large collection of mostly only early art works of famous Picasso there. Quite a large amount was donated by the artist himself and his family. Really impressiv show of just how Picasso was a child genius from early age but also was incredibly good at the classical way of making art at that time! I came really early one Sunday at shortly past 10 a.m. when they open. There were not many people at all then but it got more and more crowded by the minute. Later I saw a long line at the entrance, be prepared that you might have to wait up to 1 hour to get in. Except for the audioguide being quite broken (volume was almost impossible to set), the German audioguide was really bad because the speaker was obviously German but could not say Spanish names of villages and people right at all and had some kind of strange defect. I was mad, because it cost almost 5€ extra to get this thing! The info given was really well prepared but better get the English audioguide instead of the German one! The collection is shown in chronological order, but some rooms I almost missed, because the room numbers are small and rather high up at the doors and the plan you can take from the museum is also printed small. read more

The museum itself is gorgeous, the exhibits are lovely and interesting, and the best of it depicted Picasso's take on Las Meninas. This had one of the longest lines in Barcelona. We actually passed by three times but did not go in the first two times because of a long wait. Picasso was a busy worker and her has paintings scattered all around the world. There are much better pieces of his work elsewhere. I think the attraction to this museum (besides the Picasso name) is that there are not as many well known museums in Barcelona when compared to Madrid. We purchased our tickets online in advance for a combination ticket of the Picasso collection and the Dali/Picasso exhibit. Smart idea and it saved us an hour or more of a queue/ line. There are many ticket choices. I would suggest picking the combo we chose as its 12 euros each and kept us entertained for 3+ hours In past reviews I read this was a small collection of Picasso's work - but I have to disagree. With 14 rooms of his art work at 5-10 pieces of art in each room it was plenty I loved walking through the start of his art work in 1900s and continuing through the 1960s There's even 40 of his 42 pieces of pottery on display thanks to Mrs Picasso's donation to the museum on 1970 Worth every penny we paid for it. Seeing Dali's work side by side was such an added bonus. Amazed at the similarities in their work read more

It's a great place to go learn about Picasso but a lot of his works you've grown up loving are no where to be found. You CANNOT take pictures here and they will start to get aggressive if they catch you sneaking them more than once. Buy ticket online a few hours before and show up to your time. read more

I am not an art lover, so take this review with a grain of salt. I got tickets on-line and got there early one morning. You'll have to check your backpacks and pay extra for the audio tour. The museum consists of three buildings on an otherwise undistinguished alley northeast of the old city. The museum itself is very modern. It was interesting to follow Picasso's development as an artist through the chronological path of his work by the Museum. Not surprising that some of Picasso's more famous works are not here (must be in other museums) and are seen only in the reproductions in the gift store. I guess you can't visit Barcelona without going to this famous museum. read more

Go there only if you really admire Picasso and his work but if you are like my husband who thinks that Picasso is laughing in his grave at all these fools who think that his amateurish doodles are something really spectacular don't waste your time and money. Honestly this museum is not very impressive, poorly planned and rather small but you won't pay admission fees on the first Sunday of each month. Go early in the morning because there are a lot of freeloaders like us that will be waiting in line on that day. We liked seeing the progression in his work. It's a small enough museum that you can see everything quickly and get to your next place. Perfect for the guy who says yeah I want to see some art but really wants to watch a football game. But if you listen to every stop on the guide you can be there for awhile. Had a great time here! The collection seems to be missing a good chunk of Picasso's life though. Would have loved to see more from the blue period. Architecture was nice with beautiful transitions between old and new. Confusing in a couple places where to go. For example, when you see "No Access", it just means that you're going backwards through that section. Didn't do the audio tour and got great enjoyment out of it still. While not born in Barcelona, Picasso and the city are entwined together in history. This fascinating exhibition takes you through the early years of Picasso's work from his studies at art school, through the different styles he tried and ending at the beginning of his most famous style. However if you're really interested in Picasso's work there is a brilliant collection of pieces in nearby Caldes d'Estrac (about 35minutes by train) which was collected by Picasso's friend Palau i Fabre. This is not an art collection as such and are mostly gifts from Picasso to his friend and they show a whole different aspect to his work including a number of Picasso doodles which are a delight to see. Caldes also has a nice botanic forest behind the museum and a nice beach so is ideal for a day trip. read more

If you are at all into Picasso, then this is well worth the time -- the museum is particularly strong on Picasso's early career and work. Some really great pieces illustrate his early development as an artist. Once you get past this stage, however, the museum's chronological approach falls apart -- there are huge gaps and no attempt to fill them using either pictures or reproductions of other works. It's like the museum started telling a story, then lost interest and decided to only cover the periods of his career for which it has art. You need to get the audio guide -- without it, you'll get even less out of the museum. Even with it, this really seems like a museum doggedly determined to show off the Picassos it owns, with no intention of showing you any others, and no interest in helping you understand anything of his life outside those works. Some of Picasso's most important art, highly relevant to his time in Catalonia (e.g. Guernica) is never mentioned or shown because it isn't in this museum. This rather prideful approach begins when the text in the first room fails to mention the year of Picasso's birth, and it isn't until they casually mention his age when he painted some pieces later on that you can work it out (1881, by the way). Then, you have some idea how brilliant he was at an early age and have some context for the dates of all the works on display. Despite having works from these time periods, there's no mention of how Picasso avoided fighting in the first world war, what he did during the Spanish Civil war, the suicide of his friend at the beginning of his Blue Period etc. etc. In the last room, there's a great collection of pieces inspired by a famous old master, Velasquez' Las Meninas. Nowhere is the original Velasquez painting shown, except in the tiny screen of the audio guide. So the entire room of many paintings -- an extensive reaction, re-interpretation and exploration of a classic -- has no context whatsoever. It's a real forehead-slapping moment. Picasso's cubist Meninas works are brilliant, and it is especially great to see them all together side-by-side, but it's as if the curators just don't care. So three stars. It could all be so much better. read more

The Museum in Barcelona was nice but there were not many (if any) of his famous pieces here. However, the museum had many different lesser known pieces with information and stories about Picasso. The physical structure of the museum is nice. I've read where photography was not allowed but did not know about it until after we were finished. I took many photos of the pieces and were never told not to. I did not see many docents in the museum though when we were there. We went through the museum in about 2 hours. read more
