I've been on two tours and both accounts were AMAZING!! My brother and I went to the Un-Highlights Tour of the Met and the Badass Bitches Tour. We're both from the area, and the Met isn't so foreign to us - we've visited countless times before on school trips but viewing the museum through this lense was entirely different and so much fun!! Why did we go if we're from NY/NJ and Met isn't so new to us? Well we both loved taking AP Art History during high school. For myself I even minored in it during College! We both really enjoy museums and talking about art and this whole experience sounded incredible so we tried it out and loved it!! (that's why we did the second tour a year later!) So my advice is if you're visiting a museum for a second time -- do this. In my opinion when you first visit the experience and exploration should be curated by your own interests and observations. This tour was a great way to look at artifacts often overlooked because you're not familiar w/ the back story. The tour guides really help you bring each object to life by providing a unique backstory to the piece, the artist who created it, the room in which it was placed, etc. Truly a great space to connect w/ those around you and the pieces of art. During the un-highlights tour, we walked around and viewed several pieces and then ended w/ a scavenger hunt and writing a postcard. During the Badass Bitches tour, we did a similar tour of pieces made by famous women or of badass women, and at the end we did some cheesy posing alongside sculptures and got a Polaroid of it. Totally would recommend for company bonding events, they advertise for that. If it's within my bridal budget one day I would totally consider doing this as a bachelorette thing. The tour guides (graduate students often) are truly knowledgeable and wonderful to talk to you. If you go on an afternoon tour you're free to roam after the tour is over! read more

I recently went to the MET with a bachelorette party, and we did a private tour through the "Museum Hack" company. This has to be one of the best tours I've ever experienced! Our high-energy, enthusiastic, and fast-walker tour guide Lindsay, kept us engaged for the two hour duration by telling us funny/scandalous stories about particular pieces of artwork, used technology (iPad) to enhance the experience past what the plaques on the wall stated, encouraged team building games, and took us to exclusive areas of the museum. My favorite part of the tour was when we went to the rooftop gallery (who knew there was a rooftop at the MET?!) and took a group photo in front of the beautiful NYC skyline. At the end, we each received a Polaroid picture of our rooftop photo! Late Review, but late is better than never! I went on the 'Badass Bitches' Museum Hack tour during my trip to San Francisco a couple months back with Kate as my guide. I'm not someone one would generally ever refer to as a "feminist", nor am I generally a lover of museums. I'll look at a piece of art, think about it for the briefest of moments, and move on. Kate's overflowing energy kept me engaged for the entire two hours of the tour... two hours longer than the museum would have ever kept me engaged otherwise! Every year, me and the hubs take our birthdays off from work and do fun stuff all day long. It's pretty much the best. This year, one of the things we did on my bday was the Museum Hack Un-Highlights tour of the Met. Before we started, our fearless guide asked us if there was anything in particular we were dying to see. All of us were up for whatever she wanted to show us, so off we went. She led us at a brisk but not unmanageable pace (and I have lousy knees) literally hither and yon. We saw everything from marble statues (which we posed and took little take-home pictures with) to Egyptian crypts (and learned why an "unimpressive" specimen was on bold display) to an ancient Islander statue (and were educated on how he was used in trade). And so much more, as they say. We learned cool things about the artists of famous pieces, pieces that were interesting more for the stories behind them, as well as about how curators managed to get some of the art. It was fascinating and fun. I should say that, if left to our own devices, both me and the hubs are modern art people. We visited Gulliver's Gate, the miniature museum, and our tour guide was enthusiastic and informative! I think without this tour guide, we may have spent 30 minutes or so in the museum before growing bored and having seen everything. We did the Grand Central Scavenger hunt and it was great! You meet up outside of Graybar to check-in. We had a few minutes until the start time and I decided to grab an ice coffee at Zaros. I am receiving a lot of criticism for paying $80 for The Met. It's not fair, says the NYers. That's not the price. I knew people will make fun of me for paying that much for a tour + ticket. No dry, boring recitation of facts I'm never going to remember anyway. Our guide was really excited to be there, and took us on a fun ride, diving into stories that were actually interesting to the group, covering everything from "the ugliest piece in the entire museum and why it's here" to the more lurid details of the artists' sex lives...and how they affected the art, of course :) Now, we've just come back from our second fantastic tour -- this time at the Met in NYC -- and I've been converted. I'm more a of a "museum person" than I thought I was...it turned out that I just didn't like aimlessly wandering around massive, overwhelming museums without knowing what anything was. But when you look at museums the right way, at the right pace, and with the right guidance, they can be absolutely amazing. If you're an art buff interested in serious discussions about the meaning of every brushstroke, or someone who wants "just the facts", then these tours probably aren't for you. But if you're someone like me, who really wants to be entertained AND educated, then this is EXACTLY what you want. Our tour went by super fast! The Met is huge and overwhelming, and it was nice to have someone take us through some highlights and make it fun. You get a lot of fun extras- like, you interact with the art and talk to the group a lot. They also took a polaroid of us, and stuff like that. It was a good sign that the tour flew by. We had a group of 13 girls - some who had been to the museum, others that hadn't and aren't interested much in art - and it's safe to say, every single girl had a blast during the tour. Let's face it - most people don't go to museum for fun. More often it is to say you did it. Museums are generally perceived as boring, monotone, but yet necessary to attend to make an impression of an educated, well-rounded person. So you go to a museum and wonder a gallery after gallery. I'm a member of a number of museums here in NYC, but I never take guided tours. After speaking with Nick Gray, founder of Museum Hack, I signed up for the AMNH Unhighlights tour. It was by far the best museum tour experience I've ever had! Emily, our tour guide, took us to a variety of different exhibits, sharing great stories along the way. (My favorite: The story of Victorian taxidermist Carl Akeley punching a leopard down the throat.) As a very seasoned New Yorker and someone who does social calendaring for a living in the city I was really blown away by this event. I've been to the Met easily a dozen times and I learned and saw things on this tour that I'd never ever ever seen, had pointed out to me, or noticed. Other reasons I recommend this tour: It's interactive and fun! The guides are clearly passionate about art and their curiosity makes what they have to share even that much more rewarding. The per person price is a real steal! Especially when you consider you get keepsakes and that you can offset it with the Met's pay-what-you-wish policy and get an interesting tour full of info that you would never get otherwise. The tour includes some very cool takeaways which I'm not going to spoil. And lastly, even after the tour you can stay in the museum and see all the usual wings and exhibits. Fun! Fun! Fun! There's a reason why Museum Hack has 5-star ratings across the board: They know their biz and they're rocking at it. Note: This review is for the American Museum of Natural History tour and not for the Met. My friend and I decided to go, figuring, at the very least, it will be a fun two hours in a museum that we've both been to, but had not visited in a while. We arrived, met up with the group and our tour guides (Zak and Dustin) and off we went. As much as I'd love to give away some of the hilarious, amazing, and slightly disturbing facts we learned on the tour, I'd rather not and let others experience it for themselves. One of our guides said at the beginning of our tour: "We want you to leave loving this museum as much as we do." I can't even begin to tell you how true that statement was. I'm looking forward to and planning on attending another Museum Hack as soon as possible and would encourage others to do the same. Every step along the way is fun, informative, intelligent (and yes, still fun!), and worth every penny. Look forward to doing another one of these soon. read more
