The selection was good and the values were great but they do not have much rap selection.

The best vinyl place in Flint! The staff is amazingly helpful and kind. I could legit be in this place for hours and not even know that the time went by. So many vinyl records along with 45's, cassettes, and CD's. Its a truly great place with a good atmosphere. Highly recommend it. read more

Very unorganized. You can't find anything and the prices are way too high considering both the quality and lack of rarity of the records. I've shopped in here several times and never left feeling like it was a pleasant experience. The trade-in rate is not very good (what used music shop is?), but it's about the worst I've experienced. Every time I shop here, I only find run of the mill merchandise, nothing particularly rare or coveted that I just have to have. There's a glut of average "top of the pops" stuff that I wouldn't expect to find here, but that's all I ever seem to see here. This shop has a mix of vinyl records and CDs, but focuses more on the vinyl, which is surging in popularity again these days. I'm not impressed by the selection at all and it's extremely difficult, if not downright impossible, to find anything specific. The best bet is to come in without any preconceived notions about what you want because chances are slim and none that you will find it if you focus on finding that one "special" thing. A little more organization would do wonders for the place. If more than five people are in here shopping at once, it feels too crowded and people tend to "pile up" in one area and bump into each other. The service is not what I would have expected from an independent business. Usually, with small, indie businesses, customer service is everything. Not here, at least not in my opinion. Ask a question, get a snarky answer in response. No thanks. The place could stand a good cleaning. There is dust everywhere and I always wind up in a sneezing fit moments after stepping inside. read more

$18 for used cds. (Who the hell is going to pay $18 for a used Eddie Murphy cd? Especially in Flint?) $25 for used 2 cd boxed sets. $28 for home-made tapes of concerts. $10 for used records. Same price regardless of condition, band, etc. Lots of old turntables and junk. I left empty-handed and angry. I can not understand how they stay in business. They are basically begging you to shop online for new. Over-inflated junk. read more

Pete's is a place that you have to go to. It won't come to you. It's a record store in a classical sense, and not even in the the modern classical sense. There are plenty of record stores in Metro Detroit that have two big dogs running around and a big Punk section that's been imported directly from Discogs, but that's not what a record store is. That's like some sort of internet middleman. At Pete's you get what you get, and it's up to you to figure out why that's beautiful. Pete's has probably got everything if you know where to look, but be prepared to leave with things you hadn't considered. If you go into a record store wanting five specific records, you probably won't find them--not even if they're the surest shots you can devise. Be prepared to dig around. Be prepared to look through bins on the floor. Be prepared to look in the wrong section for the right record. Be prepared to ask. The staff at Pete's--which aside from one other guy, is basically just Pete--is excellent. I'm not challenging anybody to "get" Pete's--it's surely not for everybody. The people who are into vinyl are more diverse than ever, and what they want out of their vinyl experiences varies even more. But if you want to witness the genuine art and spirit of the record store, Pete's is a prime example. From Elvis Costello to Wilson Pickett to Bobby Blue Bland to James Brown to The Mothers to The Cars to Herbie Hancock, I've never left unhappy. It's definitely rewarding to be a repeat customer and get to know the staff--that'll get you into a whole world of records that are hidden or in the back--or just great recommendations from the staff themselves. I buy a lot of records on Amazon. I buy a lot of records on Discogs. But there is no replacing what Pete's does. It's not a one-stop-shop. It's something much greater. read more

18 dollars for a used Spyro Gyra CD....you can go online and buy it for 12...you can download it online for less than that. I have visited many used record places down near Detroit, every single one of them was cleaner and better organized, with better prices! read more

Musical Memories, like Dodds in Grand Rapids, is a throwback to an older type of record store. One run by an old man who thinks his records are worth a lot more than they actually are. Musical Memories has a really solid selection of oldies 45s and some expensive, but in good condition, rare oldies LPs. But the bulk of the store is shelf after shelf of poorly organized LPs that aren't in that good of condition and cost way too much. Yeah, I'm going to pay 9 bucks for a beat up REO Speedwagon record. If you dig, you can find some serious gems here, but the guy will charge you an arm and a leg. He also sells used CDs and offers to burn copies of the CDs for his customers for less than the price of the actual CD, which is ultra shady. read more

I really wanted to leave with a crateful of awesome records that I snagged at a great price... But I left empty handed. Musical Memories is a nice record store with a moderate selection of tunes but there is nothing outstanding about this place. As many of the more desirable titles are marked up and sold online, much of what remains in the store is nothing to right home about. America, Wham, that kind of thing. Most of the titles are unmarked and are in the 4-9 dollar camp when asked. This place isn't just limited to rock. There's some funk and soul too if you like to get down on that. The service is quite friendly and if you're on a specific quest, save yourself the dig and ask. read more

Pete Flanders place has been around for awhile - for those in the Flint area and are vinyl fans, I am sure you are aware. The place looks like its been around for awhile too. Junk everywhere - old records, CDs, turntables, etc. I mean, the place is cluttered. I had not been in there for sometime, but was in the neighborhood and thought I would drop by. Nothing has changed. I was met by two guys just sitting around. Place looked the same. Prices for sure are the same...too damn expensive for old junky records. I looked around for a couple of minutes, just took stock of the place. One of the guys asked me if I needed help. I asked about some Allman Bros. records. He says..'yeah, they are over here by us, come on over if you don't mind being crop dusted'. That is all I needed to hear. Being crop dusted by two 70+ year old men was not high on my list of daily activities. I left and will not return. read more

i spent many a year in this place buying cd's and chatting with the 2 guys who run it I have the music tastes and wide ranges that I do today in part because of them ! they were always very good to me and took time out to talk with me about music or if I was looking for a certain something .. Well, I can't say I agree with the other two shoppers on their experience at Musical Memories because my experience was the POLAR opposite. I enjoyed the 'old' feeling of the store (squeaky floors, dim lighting, endless choices). I found the 'old man' (disrespectful) to be EXTREMELY knowledgeable, helpful and he priced the purchased material very fair. I highly recommend Musical Memories as a place to browse and shop for oldies but goodies. read more
