Great bookstore in downtown Flint. Loved the selection. Dean has done a great job of giving a customer plenary of room to stroll the floor, have a cup of tea and browse for their next literary purchase. Congrats to the team there.

Finally, a really good used book shop/cafe devoted to providing a literary outlet that has been sorely lacking in the downtown area since the recent closure of Pages Bookstore. This cute, little independent bookstore just opened to the public over Thanksgiving weekend with a "soft opening," (a grand opening is planned for January) so it's still ironing out some kinks, but it's more than serviceable as far as used book/music shops go. With Jellybeans on Dort Highway closed for some time now, we finally have a decent used book/music retailer that doesn't mark up merchandise to stupefying levels and isn't caked in decades-old dust and toxic black mold with employees who couldn't tell you what's in stock if their lives depended on it. In fact, it's unbelievably well-organized and is clean, comfy and inviting, rather the opposite of most used book/music stores around town, whose business philosophies have mostly been along the lines of "why are you bothering me, I don't know where anything is, just pay for your stuff and go." In fact, the mantra is so different from other resale shops around town, that you forget you are actually standing in resale book shop! There's no off-putting, haughty slob eating a donut behind the counter talking about Star Trek versus Star Wars (thankfully), aka the Comic Book Guy from the Simpsons, which we seem to have so very many of at every other used/resale retailer in this town. It appears that Totem Books is very interested in advancing literacy judging from its impressive children's and junior/teen fiction departments. The large assortment of gently used/next to new children's books is terrific, with cozy little reading nooks with learning games and toys for the kiddos as well. In fact, there are comfortable little reading areas throughout the shop, beckoning customers to stick around awhile and soak up the atmosphere. The store's collection of adult fiction, ranging from bestsellers, mysteries and thrillers to contemporary authors, coffee table books and poetry, is pretty decent, but probably destined to improve with time. Also impressive is the large amount of well-maintained vinyl LP's, primarily original releases, all in excellent condition. Pretty much anything you might be inspired to pick up, they've got it and at decent, though not rock bottom, prices. Aside from books and music, you can pick up cute little DIY coasters made out of old CD's, as well as an assortment of vintage pinback buttons for only a few bucks. There was live music during Totem's "soft opening" launch, but it remains to be seen if that will become a permanent feature. Prices on average hardcover books run about $4-6 and vinyl records run the gamut, from $4.99 and upwards of $20, though most gems cost about $8. Granted, prices are a little higher for a used shop, but then again, this isn't the Goodwill or the Salvation Army, my friends. My husband and I scored two vinyl records for about $14 the other day, including an old Roxy Music that my husband used to have as a kid and an out of print LP that he hasn't found anywhere in years. I can't comment about the buy-back/trade-in rate for books and music, but it's something the shop was built on and will continue to be a part of its business model. The cafe area still has a lot of kinks to work out, but I'm sure that it will improve over time, since it still appears to be in the infancy stages at this point. Nonetheless, having a working cafe in a used book shop can't be considered anything less than a plus, right? I'm eager to see where this shop is headed in the future, but for now, it's a welcome addition to the Court Street area. Plus, I love the concept of shopping locally, so I try to as often as possible. Perhaps it will fill the void left by both Jellybeans and Pages, and then some.

This is a great place to stop in to get a sandwich If you're in the downtown Flint area. And their homemade scones are the best.

The couple running the place have been there for over 40 years. Some of the stock has probably been there for nearly as long. There's a veneer of neglect about the place in the best way possible. It's (dis)organized into piles and boxes on top of their older inventory, and they can direct you to the newer piles, or to older piles where you might find some stray cache of a particular genre. Or just start digging. Some of the inventory is pretty overpriced - especially the Beatles and Stones and other classics. But a lot isn't - at all. They have an eclectic selection of newer releases, reggae, psychedelica, local music, electronica, and who knows what else. Prices on this lesser known stuff are often more than fair. The atmosphere is laid back - it's like hanging out in your grandparents' basement. Some of the people who come in have been coming in a LONG time. An older fellow came in looking to haggle for a record and was told off for an insulting offer, responding with a "I've been coming to this store since the day it opened." This is a true neighborhood record store and something you just won't find anywhere else in this era of discogs and ebay pricing. Just go and support these people. They really appreciate it.

This store has been open since the early 80's and has been operated by the same owner a little over 25 years in the same location. Admittedly, the shop can be kind of easy to miss- you'll find it in a little strip mall across the street from Kroger and virtually next door to Jester's Lounge- but its inconspicuous location houses a world of interesting treasures. It's hard to imagine what's in store just from exterior appearances. First of all, this is a serious antiques shop. It's not a junk shop or thrift store commingling with that occasional rare find. No, this is a true blue, honest to goodness antiques store. From the rare and extremely valuable to the kitschy and suddenly popular again vintage wares, this little shop packs a punch when it comes to browsing for interesting artifacts of yore. Wall to wall, it's filled with centuries-old fine china tea sets, comic books, vintage depression glass, antique oil paintings and clocks, estate sale jewelry, old coins, 19th and early 20th century furniture (mirrors, chairs, china cabinets), retro lunch boxes, old chandeliers/lighting fixtures rescued from long-forgotten homes, vintage/antique dolls, kitsch memorabilia, vintage postcards, mint condition vinyl records from the 50's (and earlier), old typewriters, Art Deco figurines, and more. The owner seems to be a friendly chap who loves to chat and discuss antiques with anyone who walks in the door. I thought he was very nice and helpful, showing me where things were and offering up little anecdotes about most pieces, including how he acquired the piece, its history, how it was manufactured, etc. His stories are part of the charm of shopping here, I think. The store is small, but crowded. I found row upon row of cool things, but it is a tight squeeze, so be careful while traversing the narrow aisles for that one-of-a-kind treasure. I was slightly afraid I was going to knock something over, but the owner was super nice and told me not to worry and that he'd get something down for me if it was hard to reach. I thought it was nice that he informed me he doesn't follow the "you break it, you buy it" rule that some small shop owners have tried to adhere to (even though, technically, that's what insurance is for, which negates trying to enforce such a standard). I appreciated that he wasn't constantly muttering "be careful" or "you break it you buy it." I hate that. Toward the back of the store, it feels a little bit like a "catch all" room, teeming with unique items, like vintage memorabilia from long-gone businesses, old typewriters, antique objects ' arte, books, furniture, oil paintings/vintage illustrations, and china. The more I looked, the more I saw that I liked. Even though it was super crowded, everything was laid out nicely and well-maintained. I liked the eclectic selection and good quality condition of the merchandise. There are a few caveats, though. A lot of the pieces are not individually priced. If you're interested in something, you have to bring it to the attention of the owner and he'll tell you the price. A few of the larger items, like oil paintings and furniture, are priced, but smaller ticket pieces are not. That happened to me. I picked up a vintage green depression glass pitcher that I was interested in purchasing and he told me the price which he was willing to sell it to me at, which was only $15. I jumped at that and felt that was more than fair. He wrapped it carefully for me in an effort to avoid my new purchase getting any potential chips/damage and my transaction was complete. Another small caveat- it's cash only. This shop doesn't accept credit cards and never has to my recollection. That's a bummer and usually I avoid businesses with this philosophy, but when it comes to antiquing, it does still happen sometimes, so I made an exception. The owner does take layaway and down payments on items, though, to lessen the burden, particularly on larger pieces. If you're hoping to land some priceless antique tea set for a few bucks or a Homer Winslow landscape painting hidden under a pile of junk and forgotten about for $5, don't hold your breath. It won't happen. The owner seems to know his business pretty well and has a good feel for what pieces are worth and what they aren't. You won't unearth some rare relic of 19th century Americana for a few bucks because the management doesn't know its actual worth. In other words, this isn't the local Goodwill. The prices are fair and flexible, but you probably aren't going to walk away with something for a $1 that is worth thousands of dollars that was hidden away in someone's attic. You're better off trying your luck by hitting every garage sale you can tolerate in an effort to hit that kind of jackpot. Overall, it's a quaint antiques shop with a very personable vibe to it.
