It seemed like The White Lotus: Muskegon vibes to me but the whole thing went off without a hitch and was nowhere near dramatic or scandalous enough for HBO Sunday nights. Shoreline Inn is an imposing presence on the Lake Michigan shoreline and is far away from any other towers and is visible enough from far away for me to find my way back without having to consult Google Maps. This ten story tower was built in the 90s but some of the baroque, almost Gothic details make it look older. I couldn't figure out if it was a newer building trying to look retro or an older building that had been rehabbed before I looked it up. It doesn't look a hundred years old or anything but it wouldn't have surprised me if it was from the 60s or 70s. The seashells lining the facade up top are a bit gaudy but it's distinctive. I'll give it that. More retro details abound inside, like the weathered old suitcases affixed to the wall above the staircase from the lobby to the lower level. I can't speak to the cost, as my family got a group rate, and I didn't handle paying for my dad and myself who shared a room with my uncle. I think my aunt told me though, and it's not bank breaking but on the upscale side. Given that our room was pretty spacious and held a pullout couch that I slept on in addition to two queen size beds for my dad and uncle Bill it was reasonable. We had a nice view with sliding doors that look like they'd be for a balcony but sliding them open just gave you a slightly better view of the railings right against them. Shoreline Inn does have balconies for some rooms. I went to hang my swimming trunks on our railing to dry them out and accidentally dropped a sock on one three floors below. D'oh! Sorry room 316. The swimming pool and hot tub on the lower level stole the show for me. I hit those up on both mornings and the place was gloriously empty. One of the two hot tubs was broken and empty but it didn't matter with the area deserted. No bathroom inside the pool room so on one morning I had to wrap a towel around me tight and try not to drip in the hallway too bad. Fortunately the restroom wasn't far away. I can't even speak to our room's shower as I relied on the cleansing waters down here for the duration of our two night stay. The breakfast bar at the lobby bar has some good breakfast sandwiches and some good smoothies. No free breakfast but those free breakfast hours are always so prohibitively early. I'd rather pay and rest easy knowing I can sleep in late and get breakfast all the way til 11:30. Or take an eat morning dip before I eat. I'm on vacation, damnit! A wedding counts as a vacation, right? A small convenience store next to the front desk where they cash you out has the basic necessities you'd expect. I grabbed some ice cream and aspirin on my second night. And they have a nice room to gather across the hall from the front desk. The staff was unfailingly friendly and with three luggage carts I never noticed anyone stuck without one. A boardwalk right outside complete with park benches was nice and there's an outdoor pool as well. I never made it out to that one, though. The conference center of titular fame here hosted the reception. My steak definitely hit the spot but my dad said his chicken was just so-so. Our table killed a whole gravy tugboat worth of balsamic for our salads as my dad was the only one to opt for ranch. The appetizer were appetizing, the cake was sweet and my after dinner tea was soothing. There's a bar and grill next to the conference center with its private rooms and it appeared the kitchen for both was on our side. The foodrunners kept having to take food for the other side through the entrance doors for the guests of the patrons of the conference center and a short way outside to the Lake House Waterfront Grill (I just looked up the name) which looked awkward for them and for guests. I assume there's another route in the winter but I think that too is having to muscle past private party guests. Just not the best design. Minor quibble and I was more annoyed for the workers than us. I know what it's like to be a foodrunner! The television in our room didn't have a ton of stations. No chance to see the Tigers drop a couple games to the Mariners but I did see most of the first SNL I have in a few years after Uncle Bill wanted to put it on. I mostly killed time in the room by watching Kung Fu on my portable DVD player and reading a graphic novel. All in all it was a memorable and good time, one I'll no doubt look back fondly on whether I find myself back in Muskegon or not.

We stayed in room 903. Great view, nice room, nice pool. When it was time to relax I got in the bed…read moreand within 5mins I felt itchy. I looked and there were baby bed bugs EVERYWHERE! We immediately told front desk and they apologized and refunded us in full and moved us to an "upgraded room", which was infact a downgrade. I called front desk and said I wasn't happy with the room they moved us to, so she moved us to the exact same room 4 floors down. We left and will never go back! Beware!
