I visited this gym for the first time today and ended up cancelling my membership the same day due to my experience at the front desk. When I walked in, there was a "be right back" sign posted. At first, I thought no one was there, but then I noticed someone sitting behind the desk, partially hidden by a monitor. It wasn't clear whether they were the staff member I was supposed to check in with or if I was supposed to wait. As a new member, I didn't know the procedure and was already a bit nervous. When I acknowledged them, I was met with a dismissive attitude and asked "what do you need?" in a way that felt irritated, as if I was bothering them. There was no greeting, no explanation, and no effort to make the situation clear or welcoming. For a first time visit, that interaction set a very negative tone. A simple "I'm on break" or "I can check you in quickly" would have made a huge difference. Instead, the experience felt confusing and unwelcoming. I had specifically pushed myself to come in despite feeling anxious about trying a new gym, and this interaction completely discouraged me. I told the front desk person that I would come back another day, but honestly this was enough for me. I left and called my insurance company to cancel my membership on the walk home. I'm so glad I was able to get a refund because I prepaid for 2 months. This place has such great reviews, but my nerves are too bad to be in unwelcoming spaces. read more

I can't say enough good things about my neighborhood gym. The space is beautiful, well-kept, and equipped with everything I need, from up-to-date machines to multiple rooms where I can break away and do my own thing when I prefer a quieter workout. The hours are convenient, they offer good classes, and the personal trainers are knowledgeable, professional, and genuinely invested in helping people improve. It's busy enough to feel active and energized, but not so crowded that you're waiting around for equipment. The owner is a good guy who clearly cares about the community, and it feels good to support a local business. Highly recommend. read more

If you are specifically looking for a gym where you feel like you are royalty working out (but unfortunately have to share limited equipment with others) then this is the place to go. Chandeliers, arches, exposed brick etc make the vibe. However, this gym is essentially like a row home turned into a gym, so expect low ceilings on the bottom level, large fans for ventilation, and again, limited equipment. But then again, this place is convenient if you live in Mount Vernon (and can walk here instead of trying to find parking) and aren't looking for a big gym like Merritt or something else. read more

I did a free week trial and then a month long groupon for this gym 2 years ago. Nice quality gym. It is small, but they have most everything I need. Even during their peak hours they are not too busy. It is basically a really nice home converted into a gym. On e bottom floor, they have free weights. From what I recall they had two flat bench presses, 1 inclined bench, 1 squat rack, graviton pull up machine, cables, Dumbbells, 3 benches, kettle bells, lower back extender station. The second floor starts with reception and treadmills. As you walk into the next room, there is a bunch of universal equipment. Farther down are more cardio equipments like bikes and ecliptic le machines. There are 2 rooms for classes. Their classes are excellent which are small in size but there is plenty of space. The instructors are very friendly and motivating. 1 of the classes was even performed outside in the parking lot to provided ample running space. The gym is pricy, but i guess it helps to keep the gym from being overcrowded. It is very convenient to where I live. read more

Tried this gym on a trial; its small but quiet and has up to date equipment; I took several classes and liked the boot camp style classes. The 3 stars is for 3 things; 1. Spin class I took was not good at all; it was not challenging in the slightest - just very boring (I walked out of the class and ran 3 miles); the music was TERRIBLE outdated pop music that was set at a very low, unmotivating volume; the class was subpar in my opinion. Especially when there are very good, strenuous cycling classes all around Mount Vernon and Inner Harbor (also heard rumors Soul Cycle is opening up shop in Bmore). 2. Frankly, there are not enough classes. I came from a gym that offered 60 classes a week. There needs to be more options across the board. The classes I attended (especially the boot camp ones) were busy. 3. Parking! Where the f*#k can you park....and not pay $3-5 each visit. I go to the gym 4-5 days a week so factor the parking in with the 75/mth membership and you are well over 100 bucks. No bueno! Sadly, based on these factors, I am not joining this gym. I'm in love this this gym! We received complimentary membership while our apartment continues to develop (and eventually build a gym here). We've been going about a week and have had positive experiences every time. The only reason I can't give it 5 stars is it doesn't open early enough in the morning for me. But otherwise, it's a fabulous small neighborhood gym. They told us when we first went that most of the members sign up for these extensive plans with personal training, yadda yadda. But if you know what you're doing, you'll be satisfied with the equipment variety, the cleanliness and the classes offered. read more

This is really a neighborhood gem. Yes it's a bit pricey but really it isn't horrible for a nice gym. The building is really unique and adds to the whole atmosphere. The place is impeccably clean and well maintained. There is ample equipment except at peak times. Love the little yoga/stretching room. I'm mainly a runner and the cardio equipment has good ventilation with good strong fans. Bathrooms are always clean and showers stocked in case you forget your shower supplies (minus shoes though - be sure you bring your own shoes) Only complaint is the cable towers downstairs seem to always get hogged by guys who insist on using both at once for extended periods. If they were set up a little different it'd force folks to use only one at a time and allow multiple folks to workout. All in all though very pleased with this gym for the year I used it. read more

The best gym I have joined ever. I have been living in mount vernon for at least 2 years now and have been a member of MV Fit for 2 years as well. The one thing I like about this gym, not only is it convienent, but you dont have to worry about chatterboxes ruining your workout. The workout classes are awesome and they challenge your fitness level. The instructors are awesome. Mondays evening classes with Donovan are awesome,Tuesday night bootcamp at 7pm with Michelle rocks. Guy Craigwell classes will challenge you as well. Also the different fitness groups are awesome to. Thai boxing, fight club,fit club and boxing clinic just to name a few. read more

I'm a member of MV Fitness and it's really nice gym. It's cool to workout in some old, historic buildings; I only wish it was bigger. The times I've gone it hasn't been too busy which is nice. The staff is also friendly and helpful. What's really nice is that in the past city teachers didn't get a discount and now there's a substantial one---as long as you're full time and have verification. I live in Mount Vernon so MV Fitness is super convenient as it's a short walk. I work in Federal Hill so it's even better that I can go to Federal Hill fitness just the same. If you have a strong connection to both areas, it makes sense to join this gym. I opted for the membership where all classes are included. All in all, I recommend this gym! read more

I have been a member of this club for some time now. The facility combines a historic / classical structure with modern equipment. The staff is friendly and patient and the personal trainers are always willing to provide advice on exercises or using the machines. It is true that it sometimes gets busy, but they have made awesome use of the space. I have seen other reviewers express their dislike for the price of membership. But the facility is kept up, the equipment is new and its a full facility with towel service, showers, personal training and classes in a space that is kept clean and in a very convenient neighborhood. If I could give 0 stars, I would. My boyfriend and I are staying a few blocks away for the next week. Last night we dealt with a very nice man who said we could get free week passes, and online it says that we could get free day passes. My boyfriend went to the gym in the morning and did his cardio no problem, there was a friendly woman working at the desk. When we came back just now, at nighttime, to lift we were confronted by the nastiest man. He nastily told me that I could not have a free pass, because I was not a resident of the town. Then when my boyfriend questioned him stating that it does not say that anywhere online, and that he already has a pass he nastily and aggressively retorted "I'm not going to sit here and explain this to you." He would no longer honor the pass that my boyfriend had already received, and we politely walked out. Not to mention the gym is not well equipped. Old, dusty machines and a sad excuse of lifting equipment. Bad aura, and bad workouts produced here... that's for sure! Glad we didn't waste our time!! **EDIT-My response to your response: Two separate employees dealt with my boyfriend and I previously and granted him a free day pass. So, how is it that suddenly the last employee gets an aggressive and nasty attitude and does not honor the already given pass? Wow, talk about rude, well at least to the man who seems to own/manage it. The other employees seemed friendly, but was greeted by a very rude man who thought he was above others my second visit. I could look past the poor equipment and lack of any real weights if the management was nicer but that was not the case. It's funny how when they respond on yelp reviews they Continue to ignore what people say and respond simply copy and pasting their own policies. Would not recommend this gym unless it was free and even then probably better off at the Merrit nearby. Edit: to add to my review, as I stated predictably Justin only responded to part of my post. If you consider benches you can find at modells quality then I guess you're right.... their are many other better gyms for cheaper locally found with a better atmosphere and most importantly respectful management. read more

I should preface this by stating that my boyfriend and I are members of another gym. However, with our car recently stolen and our other gym not being walking distance, we bought ourselves a month membership at MVF on Living Social. Wow this place is pretentious. You can work out among hardwood floors and crown moulding, and there are even sweat-infused paintings for sale on the walls. The cardio section is so small and cramped that you and your neighbor are practically on top of one another. The downstairs weight room is even more cramped (Fire code prohibits more than 17 people at one time), which makes it very difficult to pump iron around 5 or so other MVF patrons, who I might add, tend to have the judging air of entitlement that only comes with having a $75/mo gym membership and chandeliers in your workout space. As soon as possible, we will be working out somewhere else. read more

Pros: The staff here are very kind and friendly. The personal training sessions were very useful and we learned lots of fun crossfits. The classes I attended were pretty intense at least for me but fun. Very convenient location. Beautiful building and fancy equipments! Cons: Some of the front desk staffs are not as well trained. Sometimes it took a while for them to repair the equipments. There was a knob missing from one of the equipments and it took a while for them to get a new one. Be careful about your personal belongings. Some random guys on the street can easily enter the facility and steal your stuff in the closets. Make sure to lock your closet! (I once got stollen my brand new smartphone even though I locked my closet :( ) read more

I started using this gym back in the Spring after recovering from surgery and simply love it. The staff is very friendly and the members are chill professionals and respectful of one another. I never have to wait to use equipment and have never exercised somewhere so beautiful. I appreciate the gender neutral restrooms and the private shower rooms. I haven't taken any classes yet, but they look like fun and the instructors walking around are enthusiastic and seem knowledgeable. Great neighborhood feel and so happy to find a LGBTQ friendly environment so close to home. read more

when I first saw the pictures I was dazzled. The paintings, old world charm really was a draw for me and the $25 price tag, compliments of living social, sweeted the deal. When you first come in its cool, attendant was friendly and helpful. Now the place is small and has limited equipment and that was mentioned in other comments I've read. What wasn't mentioned, and I'm beyond shocked, is that it's dirty and smells. The bathroom was beyond offensive and so was the sweat saturated weight room. There was mold on the shower curtain. How could it be this dirty! To ask that much money is ridiculous. I live very close but not close enough to walk so good luck with parking. For such a small gym I'm surprised they have so many large rooms for classes that are limit at that. My suggestion is to get a regular cleaning schedule that employees sign off on. Rather than eat a sandwich, talk/text on your cell phone, and chit chat with their co-workers some one could have Lysoled that shower curtain. read more

I really appreciate this gym. It's right down the street from me, and the convenience it offers me honestly makes up for the fact that it's slightly overpriced. My roommate has a membership at Planet Fitness and even though it costs less, she rarely ever goes because it's all the way in Catonsville. I joined a gym because I had every intention of using it, and MV Fitness is more than adequate for my needs. MV Fitness is a certain kind of gym. It is small and has a limited amount of equipment because of its size. It doesn't have a pool or squash courts or some of the amenities offered at larger gyms. At first I was hesitant in joining a gym without a pool, but then I realized that I never even once used the pool at my old gym, so who cares? The equipment they do have is up to date, and all of the cardio machines are positioned around/have personal TVs. The gym is very clean, well tempered, and quiet. I go to MV Fitness at different times of day. I work 7-3 so I've never been during those times (or before... no matter how much I wish I was, I am not a morning person) except on the weekends, but I've tried right after work, during the dinner hour, and right before close (10) and all different times on the weekends... and this gym is seriously never crowded! It's amazing. I almost never have to wait for a machine, ever. I mostly do cario so I don't spend a lot of time in the weight room downstairs, but you can see through the windows that it is never overly crowded, either. So even though it's a small gym, it's not cramped. As a private person, I really appreciate this. I haven't taken the classes because I'm not much a group exercise type, though I wish there was a little more variety in the classes offered because there are only one or two a day. That, and the fact that I think this gym could use one or two more elliptical machines and the locker room situation is not ideal (you have to change in the bathrooms--the locker area is coed and very public) is why I'm not giving MV Fitness 5 stars. The gym is an incredibly beautiful setting--think cardio ballroom--and this can't be overlooked. It might seem frivolous but it's actually really fun and motivating to exercise in such a nice environment. PS- I took my mom by MV Fitness when she was visiting me once and she was SO JEALOUS! She had never seen such a beautiful gym and said the convenience added by its location is more than worth the price and I agree with her. If you live in Mt Vernon, I really think it's worth it. read more

I've been a member of MV Fitness for ~5 years. As noted in other reviews, the monthly membership is on the high side. However, for me personally, it's worth the money. (1) I love the small, boutique nature of the facility. I never feel overwhelmed when I go to the gym. Other gyms in the city are more of a meat market, with atmospheres similar to a night club. I mainly use the treadmill and I have a personal trainer (Kim Resnick...more on her farther down). While there is not a huge selection of equipment, it's rarely crowded and there is always equipment available. (2) I need a gym that's close to where I live, or I will NEVER be motivated to go. MV Fitness is centrally located in MV and right across the street from my house. (3) KIM RESNICK! Kim is a personal trainer at MV Fitness and other gyms. Working with her has changed my life. I started training with Kim when I was pregnant (1st trimester) and have continued to meet with her ~ 2x a week for the last 18 months. Pricing for a personal trainer (I buy sessions in bulk) is very reasonable. Kim works around my schedule and has continuously adjusted my workouts to meet my physical needs. She sends me exercise routines to do at home or on vacation and helps review my diet. She also works with several family friends ranging in age from 30s to 80s. I highly recommend reaching out to Kim if you need a little help getting started at the gym or if you are looking for long term training. OK - some downsides to MV Fitness: (1) They have a very limited selection of classes and very few (if any) classes geared towards beginners/those needing a slower pace. (2) Most of the classes they do offer seem to take place in the evening, and use most of the machinery. So, it can be challenging to work out when there is a class taking place.(3) The equipment is starting to get a little outdated and show wear and tear. (4) The TVs on the equipment arent great. (5) They have limited hours. On weekends they dont open until 8am and close at 6pm. (6) Since incorporating a physical therapy practice into the building there is less space available and the equipment is more condensed (I loved working out in the back room prior to the PT practice moving in). Overall I would recommend MV Fitness to those looking for a smaller, less competitive atmosphere. If you are an advanced athlete, body builder, etc, this probably isnt the gym for you. read more
