I think this was my fault. As a midwestern person from the U.S. I have a snobby standard for BBQ, and should've just let it be. But this place advertised Texas style BBQ so I decided to give it a try. The service was good, friendly, and fast. The interior was quant, simple but gave off vibes of being a BBQ spot. As far as fresh, grilled food goes, I would give this place a 3/5. But as far as BBQ goes, this ain't it chief. We tried the beef ribs, pulls pork, quarter chicken, and sides of coleslaw and Mac and cheese. Hands down the best thing was the Mac and cheese. I ordered a mixed meat box and unfortunately they were out of several items. Common in a BBQ place later in the day and especially with a large party. I came here a couple of weeks back on my way to Phoenix Park from the Liberties. I had high expectations given the ratings and the quality of Pitt Bros which I felt was fairly close to the kind of quality of BBQ from American BBQ joints. Needless to say as we approached I had hoped for good things as the location definitely had the vibes of a decent BBQ if a bit upscale. Needless to say I was pretty disappointed, starting with the menu actually. The menu was listed by the meat of the animal, not the product, so you kind of had to guess whether beef meant brisket or beef ribs, and similar with regard to the others. I ended up ordering the brisket with a side of Mac n cheese and let me just say I have never had food that I could describe in a way other than "gentrified". There was 0 BBQ sauce, which would be fine if the meat had some nice seasonings or flavor which it really didn't. The mac n' cheese was pretty flavorless as well which I really wasn't digging. I think I had cole slaw as the other side or some other salad but it was pretty forgettable and had a medley of vegetables that had been segregated in such a way that they were really not appealing at all. The presentation was also abysmal, the entire meal was served in this small cardboard like to-go container that made digging into anything a challenge. A proper plate or something less narrow would be much more appreciated if I were to ever dare coming again. Needless to say I don't think I'll be returning, but I'll have to see how things feel next time I'm in Ireland. In the defense of the restaurant it did feel like they were understaffed and I do believe my friend mentioned seeing a "looking for chef" sign (though he said it could have been staff as well) so I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt with regard to whether they had an actual chef in or not. I wasn't expecting Texas quality brisket at an Irish restaurant. But did I ever get it! Perfectly cooked and seasoned, my -grandmother- would happily eat this. And she's picky as hell. Potato salad was just right. Which isn't easy, given how particular people can be about it. Right texture and taste, I couldn't have asked for better. This would be a 3.5 star review if there was an option! Really like the barbecue here but two things consistently irk me about this place... 1) The menu...why-oh-why is it so darn complicated?? Why can you only have combinations from the same animal?! What if you want beef ribs and pulled pork or brisket and chicken...well, boo-hoo because it's just not going happen here! You have to pick your animal of choice and stick with it...or weirdly you can have meat from all three on offer (cow, pig and chicken) in a mixed combo. Just don't try to mix two of your meats...stick with one or go all in; they are your only options!! It's the most bizarrely fascist BBQ menu I've come across! It's just all a bit nonsensical and as I said, irksome! Gimmicky menus often just get in the way of people being able to order what they want. 2) The service can be pretty terrible; I've found it lacklustre at best. Aside from these two negatives, the food here is really good. The beef ribs are excellent and it's great that you can order sausage as a side for all the meat lovers out there! Love that they have good BBQ sauce and garlic mayo on the tables so you can feel free to slather it on the brisket or pulled pork. I really love this place. Super casual, super simple & super tasty. I'm a very predictable person so usually get the same dish in my favourite restaurants. In this place my go to is a bird box with mashed potato & beans. Delicious! Really comforting, really homely and a good sized portion. The one thing I don't like is that they hide some veggies in the bottom of the box - i'm not against veggies but their veg are just randomly stuck in the bottom & don't add anything to the food. Yay another BBQ joint in town and this time, 7 and a half minutes walk from home... hooyah! Love the decor (forgot to take a pic... boo) and staff are super friendly to explain the menu and drink specials. As four hungry bastards, we all opted for the mixed grill selection so we could try everything, along with two sides... the pulled pork was gorgeous! The sides were a bit disappointing though, the chips were quite greasy with no crunch and the slaw was rather plain. At this point, only 4 stars as Bison Bar is still the leader of the BBQ pack but definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. My Meat Wagon has to be one of the best BBQ places in the city. Every time I go here I promise myself I will get something other than the pulled pork but it is so damn good I just can't will myself to try something else. It's not that the other stuff doesn't look good, it's just that their pulled pork is so amazing that I can't justify to myself not ordering it. My Meat Wagon might also be the most hipstery BBQ place in the city as well. The place is always full of ironic trucker cap wearing, skinny jeans clad 20 something years olds but don't let that put you off. It is still a really nice place. Laid back ambience, usually with cool funk or 90s hip-hop on the stereo. For about €12 or so you can get a big box of meat with two sides. I highly recommend their sausages and fries. They are both amazing. The sausage is like a lovely hearty chorizo and the fries are nice and crispy. The chips also come in a tiny shopping trolley, which is kind of cool. I've been to MMW a few times (5+) and while I've enjoyed each time greatly, the experience is rather unreliable. It's best to start with what I've found consistent over my visits: 1. The staff; friendly, courteous and helpful 2. Drinks selection; MMW stocks an abundance of different craft bears and sodas 3. Price: At 20 euro for a main and a drink, it's good value for the general quality you receive What I've found inconsistent, however, is the food. As the name might tell, the restaurant serves almost exclusively meat, slow cooked meat to be specific. Available is brisket, pork belly, pulled pork, cow ribs and chicken alongside a number of sides the best of which is the chorizo sausage. The inconsistency doesn't lie with the choice in food but its availability and repeated quality. The first time I went I was able to get a glorious beef brisket that would melt in your mouth alongside the chorizo sausage I love so much. However, on the next three visits they were out of sausage. Over numerous visits the brisket has ranged from being very soft and utterly delicious to dry and disappointing. My latest visit was the greatest show of that where everyone at the table noted the dryness. I want to close saying that the meat is never bad, I just feel that on some nights, it's not nearly as good as it should be. All in all MMW is still one of my favorite restaurants in Dublin and I'd recommend it to any and all carnivores. read more

Most places are fairly make shift when they open, it's to be expected. Work the kinks out, figure out what adjustments are needed etc. However, this wasn't the case with MMW. Went on the second night and the food was flawless. Perfectly cooked meats, which are done in a smoker imported from the states. I finally got to try MMW this weekend. I had been on a little pub crawl around Stoneybatter/Smithfield and was ravenous. I came in here with my partner and we were greeted by very friendly staff and seated promptly. Confusing is how the menu is described in other reviews, to me it's just extremely unclear. What is pig and cow and bird? So many possibilities as to the cut of meat or how it is prepared. We opted for the mixed meat board to share. The guy serving us said it is probably big enough to share but we may need to add an extra side if we were extra hungry. Food arrived fairly quickly and it was the perfect size for us to share. We were told there was no brisket, so the cow option was beef rib. Boy was I happy about this. This beef rib was one of the most amazing things I had ever tasted. The bird was a chicken breast with wing and the pig was pulled pork. Both pretty tasty. We got chips and potato salad as our sides. The chips were pretty good but the potato salad was bad. It was a very small portion in comparison to the chips and a couple of pieces of potato were under cooked and dressing wasn't great. Chips in a small shopping trolley is not my preference but whatever, it's not taking away from the taste. It's a novelty to some people and an annoyance to others. We asked for vinegar and it was brought out in a little paper condiment cup. Why no vinegar bottles? I do like the style of the place, the music and vibe BUT it isn't very comfortable. If I am potentially going to stuff my face and get meat sweats I want to be comfortable. Maybe I am getting old. Overall the beef rib was f*cking amazing, the other meats pretty tasty, chips good, onion ring and pickles OK and potato salad bad. The staff were really friendly and efficient. But what brings down the rating the most for me is the menu and how uncomfortable I felt sitting down and eating here. I also wanted to point out that I had wanted to try this place for quite a while but after a fellow Yelper was singled out by the business for writing a negative review and was approached by staff regarding their review whilst said Yelper was on the premises of this business I was reluctant to do so. A nice touch was the Stinger bars and Refreshers as you leave. I love me some Stingers and Refreshers. Will I be back? Absolutely. That beef rib alone is enough reason for a return. Sooooo I loved my meat wagon until yesterday. We got there at 6:50pm and we wanted a table for 4. We were asked to wait for 20mins and so we went next door for a drink. At 7:35pm I rang and whoever answered appeared confused about our booking. We eventually got a table at 7:45 and boy were we HANGRY. Music was very loud, we couldn't even hear the waiter - what's with these restaurants these days? Food was good as always but we couldn't wait to leave as even though we asked to reduce the music it was too loud to chat with friends. I wonder if the music is loud to achieve a quick turnover?! I've been to My Meat Wagon a good few times and I have to say I'm a big fan! The restaurant itself is a mixture of cool, casual BBQ and rustic shed. It's a rough and ready sort of a place with mismatched cutlery, kitchen roll napkins and where sharing your table when it's busy is the norm. The food in MMW is fantastic! Not being one for huge portions I usually go for the "Box" option of whichever meat I feel like on the day. The only thing I would say is that the menu can be a bit intimidating at first, given that it's just a picture of the animal and no clear indication of what exactly you can get. However, this was quickly resolved as the waiter explained how it works in a very easy to understand manner. Some of the little quirks of the place were endearing: - The chips coming out in the cute, miniature trolleys - The beer being served in the jars with handles - The bean tray and wooden spoon It was a nice change from just sitting at a generic table with a boring atmosphere. I'd definitely recommend this place. My main problem was that I couldn't drink too much because of how full I was. I'm not sure why it's taken us so long to visit this spot in our neighbourhood, but I'm so glad we did! It was a full house when we stopped in on a Friday night, but they managed to squeeze us in at a small table looking into the kitchen. We ordered the mixed meat platter for one (which comes with two sides of your choice). We chose the slaw, the baked beans and added a side of chips. The board was a meat feast - pulled pork, bbq chicken, beef rib, brisket... It was plenty of food for two people to share, and everything was smoky and juicy. Bbq sauce comes on the table, so you're free to sauce up to your heart's desire, but I personally found that I didn't need it. The meat was moist and tasty enough on its own. The beans were really good too, cooked with smoky chunks of meat, so could almost be a hearty meal by itself. I'd skip the chips next time, though. As cute as the trolley they come in is, they were soggy. They have a small but decent-enough selection of beer and wines to choose from, and non-alcoholic options like homemade lemonade. It's right next to Lighthouse Cinema as well, so perfect spot for grabbing a bite before or after a movie! read more

The staff are friendly! I like that they take your order & pull up a seat like they're having a chat when doing so. They've a decent craft beer menu to go with the food... I'm not really a beer drinker so I chose the Craigie's cider. The drinks are served in mason jars with handles. I like the idea but it's another sign that the Irish like their American hollibops!! We brought my fiancé's little brother with us. They chose to share a mixed meat board to try everything My Meat Wagon as to offer... Brisket, beef ribs, pulled pork, chicken, sausage & more pork... You'd totally have epic meat sweats if you tackled it alone but I think they do a smaller version for one.. That also comes with sides including onion rings, mashed potato, baked beans, coleslaw, corn on the cob and chips... And I chose the cow in bread with a side of sausage.. The brisket was amazing. It comes with an onion ring and carmelizwd onions... I poured some of their bbq sauce onto the tray so I could use that as a dip. Bloody gorgeous! There's some carrot and cauliflower on each tray... Today I had the joy of experiencing my meat wagon. My appetite is large and today I was feeling greedy so I had the meat on the board. The beef rib is an instant conversation stopper, a long block of impressively tender meat clinging to a Jurassic curve of bone. It surely upstages the brisket in theatricality, and possibly in flavour as well, though it's a close call. The brisket is cooked patiently to render much of the fat from the top cap, moistening even the leaner lower muscle until it gleams. The side made the strongest case for me was the beans that lap up wood smoke as they bake in the pit next to the meats. Delicious-finger licking food topped off with some great beers to choose from. Oh meat wagon my meat wagon. Craving a manly meal consisting of meat and more meat i stumbled upon this humble establishment. (Fries served in shopping carts is a concept too cool to ignore) The first question the waiter asked once i sat down was "how hungry are you" the waiter offered their special a meal for 2 consisting of every cut pf meat on their menu. After a few seconds of consideration the meat mountain was ordered and she was a beaut. The opportunity to taste a delicious variety of meat was astounding an assortment of pork, pig chicken and cow to die for. The pulled pork in particular was my personal favorite. However, i must say the side of mash lacked a note or being mashed properly, but who cares the meat was where it was at and the meat wagon certainly delivered. Ok. I'm gonna update my review. I went back again last night and there were two marked differences to my first experience: 1. Staff. This is the biggest difference. They were super friendly, and massively on top of it. It was freezing yesterday and they were having a problem with their heating inside the restaurant. I didn't know this and asked if they could turn up the heat. They explained the situation which was totally cool, scuse the pun, but also went to the massive effort of moving us so we could sit next to a temporary heater which they moved to be closer to us. Even beyond this, they were great. (We were greeted with a smile when we came in this time, and the same when we left, which was far from what we got last time) 2. Food. Last time, I got a burger. This was a mistake as it wasn't good. So, this time I decided to go for what the restaurant is billed for - the bbq meat. I went for the meat board which comes with beef ribs and brisket. The brisket is probably not to my taste as was a bit dry, though it had a really interesting smokey bbq taste which was wonderful. The ribs though were amazing. Juicy, falling off the bone, with that same dark, smokey taste. Really excellent. I got a side of beans which was also really great. My accomplice got the mash which again wasn't brilliant - needed seasoning and was quite dry, but we both also got the corn on the cob which was perfectly cooked and a nice fresh balance to the rest of the food. It definitely pays to go back to these places a second time, and well done to the staff on last night who showed up the staff that were on a few weeks ago! They really need to sort out the ridiculous menu though - just write the descriptions on there. It was pretty difficult to figure out what stars to give this place as once we got our food it was delicious. However, the difficulty of getting the food was almost too much to handle and soured the taste of the delicious meat once it came. Trying to figure out the menu is like trying to figure one of the challenges on the Crystal Maze. I was almost looking around for Richard O'Brien, ready to pop out with his harmonica and tell us we only had 30 seconds left to figure out what we were ordering or we'd be locked in there until rescued with a crystal. It seems like it's very simple on first inspection - three formats for getting 3 animals with 2 sides included in everything. In a box, On a Bun and On a Board. Each option had a pic of a cow, a pig and a chicken. This is where it gets interesting. As a BBQ joint, it's clear that there is more than one type of meat that comes from a cow/pig. None of this is written on the menu so it took us a while to extract what you get with each option from the staff. EG: You can only have brisket with the 'In a Box' menu. Even if you just want ribs.. you cant have them. If you just want a selection of the meats - nope, you can have 2 types of cow (what were they again? Can I write all this down on the menu till we figure it out?) with one of the types of pig. They had no chicken options when we were there. Can we not have sides and have the 4 types of meat (brisket, ribs, pulled pork and pork belly) - nope - you have to have sides and you can only have 3 meats. UGH. In the end after 4 trips by 2 different waiting staff to the kitchen to ask the chefs if we could just have meat we got sharing boards with all the meats and a selection of sides. If only we could have just ordered this in the first place from the menu. I don't get why it's so hard for Irish BBQ joints to let you pick what meat you want and what sides you want instead of all this set menu confusion. It puzzles me why it's so hard to just go to a BBW joint and order the meat I want. I JUST WANT MEAT! Very cutely decked out little spot in the heart of Smithfield Square. Staff were bubbly and friendly on arrival, and explained the (very well-priced ) special - burger & fries combo - which was deee-licious. Was in a hurry when I was there, so definitely would return for a longer evening. read more

Everything on this menu looks divine, if you're a meat lover of course! Can't wait to go back and get the sharing platter so that I can test out everything. My only complaint was that it was maybe the tiniest bit dry - a selection of sauces or dips wouldn't have gone astray. read more
