I had the special opportunity to take a three day intensive class focused on an Impressionistic Approach to Watercolors with the world renowned Watercolor painter from Uruguay, Alvaro Castagnet. He taught us to look for the revolution within the painting & not 'paint pretty' We don't make pussy cats we make lions! And being a Leo myself this was incredible to hear. Interesting new concepts I learned like Maintain dirty water and never refresh it. Never clean the palette so one can Blend colors you have never seen before. Look for Lost & Found brushstrokes. Alvaro reminded me, To Paint with authority / Do not ever lack authority. because, If you are not confident it will show In your painting. All Three days we learned everything from figures to Cafè culture to architecture to interiors and all the time messing up or having a success on repeat ; most importantly "Our mistakes in life are our greatest teachers." The demo portion of the class was a little hard to remember at first, but the instructors were so nice and came around to help us step by step, ensuring our pottery pieces came out perfect. I also really appreciated how kind and patient the staff was with both me and my mom. We truly had the full pottery experience and were given plenty of clay to mold and craft. What I really loved about this experience is that in three weeks, my mom and I get to come back and paint our pieces! Maybe they are all like that, but it literally just looked like she turned on her video camera and painted it for the 1st time. She had such a small space and had the original painting right next to hers so it was even smaller space and was hard to follow. Her painting also didn't look like the actual picture. And many times throughout the painting, it was hard to tell what color she was using. I've only been to one paint and sip in person, but she told us which color to use each and every time. The instructor also has no Enthusiasm and Just seemed like she rolled out of bed and was bored the whole time. Sorry but I would try online again, but if this is what online is like, I will stick to youtube, which is free. ​

A great way to get out and try something new. Painting and Vino actually takes place at several…read morelocations around the valley, but combining a night of painting... or trying something easy and fun, while having some wine or other beverage and/or food seems like a great way to spend the evening to me. Erica, who teaches the class, is there to go step by step to give everyone in a small group a chance to create their own masterpiece, or just enjoy the company if others! She will answer questions, make suggestions to help fix your errors, or prevent you from making them. She is very encouraging, and not judgmental and doesn't mind if you change things up a little as I did, when I tried this a few weeks ago. You get to take your masterpiece home at the end of the class. If you like it, hang it up. If not, do what you want Me, I like to hang things up as a reminder that none of us are perfect and you should keep trying. Maybe you just meet a new friend, or learn about others. I will post a picture of my Arizona Sunset, not because it is great... it isn't--but that doesn't mean I don't like it ; and many were better than mine (I do much better with photography), but because it was fun and might give someone an idea that yes they can do this. It is a great idea for a date night (and she even tells you how to make it a "couples painting"). It would be great for friends or a special night, or just to go do something, even by yourself as I did. The price is reasonable, in fact, I saw virtually the same painting being done elsewhere for almost 3x's the cost. Who knows, maybe you will find a hidden talent... or just have some fun doing something different!
