DO NOT USE THIS SHOP!!! 2-3 years ago, I took a car there with a simple issue. I was not mechanically educated then and they not only told me I needed two of the same part, they also charged me $400 in parts and labor for each. For a total of $800. The part cost $20-30(Crankshaft position sensor) and was a 5 minute job when I did it today. 1 Bolt, two clips, right on the front of the engine, easily accessible. I will never recommend this place. They also told my sister that the brake dust on her rims was from rusted brakes and that they were a safety hazard. LIE. Rotors, calipers, and pads were replaced under a year ago and there is only superficial rust on some parts. These people may try to scam you. Find a new mechanic. read more

I'll start by saying I am a brand new Long Island resident, and I'm in the middle of the (arduous) process of setting up my new network. Doctors, gym, manicurist, mechanic. The lot. It can feel like you're back in kindergarten sometimes, walking into new places with new people where you don't really know where to start - 'hello, I'm new here, can you help me?' It can be intimidating as a newcomer to a neighborhood when you're trying to set up all your new connections. You're not sure where to go, who to trust, or whether it will be worth spending your hard earned money somewhere. I am a first time car owner, and needed to set up a mechanic - starting with my NY State inspection. I'll make this very clear - I know nothing, absolutely nothing about cars or inspections and I had no idea what to expect. So, naturally, when I saw five star review after five star review for Ralph and his team, I knew this place had to at least be a good place to start. Ralph is just as affable, warm, and down to earth as his reviews describe. While I was waiting for my inspection to finish, a regular customer came in. He wasn't quite sure about something on his statement, and I overheard Ralph helping him break down his 'balance owed' with the patience and kindness that only a seasoned professional (or parent) could display. Howie went to fetch my car in the freezing cold - even though I'd parked it a little ways away because I couldn't figure out the street parking - and had me on my way in fifteen minutes. You're a champ, Howie, sorry about the walk! I always always try to buy local, and support local business owners. They are the fabric that make up our communities, and to be quite honest, it's just nicer to deal with someone who talks to you like a human, rather than just another customer in a multi million dollar corporation. I am a car guy. My parents found Ralph at N&M in 1980 after going through hell and $$$ with other mechanics. I wish I lived closer-I would take my cars there. Whether an oil change or major fix-they stick to their quotes-they tell you when you need something and they stand behind their work. They never gouge you or make you do any unnecessary service. There are few mechanics out there like him and his team and now his newer partner, Howie. I hate bringing my car in for repair! It ranks right up there with having to go to the dentist. Although the pain comes to me in two different places -- one in my wallet, the other in my mouth -- each of these hurt just as much as the other. Just thought I would start out by saying that. My eight year old car -- a 2000 Honda Accord with 108,000+ miles is a good and reliable car -- but like most things, when it gets old, it needs some TLC. I recently had to take my car in to have its brakes checked, and while I sat at work and waited for that fateful call that would tell me they car needed extensive repairs, I tried to occupy my time until that call came. Ultimately I recieved the call . . . apparently it did not need a complete overhaul, nor did it need new breaks or/and rotors, it did need to have its master cylinder replaced though, which in the grand scheme of things was not so bad and ended up costing less than $500. This was my first experience with N&M -- we had been using another local repair station, but they had come under new ownership and we had the feeling they were not completely truthful -- case-in-point -- the old place told us a few months back that we needed to replace the struts and/or shocks -- which they said would cost us $2,000+ -- we did NOT do it . . . and thankfully N&M said they were perfectly fine. So, N&M you have won my business for now -- lets hope you stay as honest as you have appeared to be so far. read more

After reading all the reviews here, I decided to try the place out when I needed to get my car inspected fast (I'd been issued a ticket the day before.) As soon as I walked in, I ran into a local friend who'd been taking his cars there for years (always a good sign!) My inspection was done while I waited; the price was more than reasonable and now I will get a card in the mail to remind me about future inspections. The guys there couldn't be nicer. Ralph is a nice guy. He's the boss. You will make the deal with him.. Charges you per the labor manual. So you can trust you won't get jacked up rates... But the labor manual shows a longer over estimate than it really takes.. Overall, go with Ralph cuz they get things done quickly. read more

My wife and I just moved to the area a few months ago so it was a bit overwhelming trying to choose a place to take our Range Rover Evoque. Based on the positive Yelp reviews, we chose N&M Auto Repair on Long Beach Road and we have been coming back ever since. Every time we've gotten work done here, the staff has always taken care of us. The employees at N & M are as nice as they come... They treat every customer like an honored guest. I needed to get the brakes checked out in my mother-in-laws car and I called mid day on a Thursday, Ralph said to bring it in early the next morning and they would be able to check it out right away. I brought it in Friday morning, they took it in immediately and his team was able to diagnose the brake master cylinder was bad. They were able to have the car fixed in just a few hours even though I only took the car in for an inspection. They are honest, do good work and their prices are definitely fair. I like that they call you with the breakdown and cost of the repair BEFORE they do the work and they use quality parts. My last mechanic would use cheap brake pads and rotors that lasted only about a year under normal driving conditions. The shop is clean and professional. Oh my gosh, I brought my car in on Saturday for an inspection, and I not only got it inspected quickly (I was out of there in 1/2 hour!), but I met some wonderful people as I waited. The owner and the repeat customers who were waiting along with me were so friendly that it almost felt like I was in someone's living room instead of a waiting room! The mechanic who inspected my car was thorough and very respectful. He took the time to explain TPMS to me without being condescending (other single women out there will get how important -- and rare -- that is). As stated before, I would have never called and spoke to you about the fact that you were rude and disrespectful if that was not the case. I called you as soon as I got home from your shop. And yes you did apologize but you even did that with a disrespectful tone. And again I am stating like I did in my original review the back and side windows were tinted not the front. Would you like me to bring the car over again so you can see maybe you are mistaken. Also I am stating again that I never asked you to break any kind of law my inspecting my car. As I said I didn't know. You were upset because you told me that you had long standing customers asking you to inspect their car. And I would like to say that I took the car up the road to another mechanic and he inspected my car and never mentioned anything about the tint. And if you have audio in your store maybe it would be a good idea to ask a unbiased outsider and see if they think you were rude. Maybe that's just your tone and the way you speak and you don't recognize it as a problem. And as far as the oil leak in my sons car was concerned, yes it was fixed after the second time bring it back because it was guaranteed but the problem was that the timing chain was bad and when I told you about the noise the truck was making you said you didn't hear it. It wasn't my imagination obviously the car had to be junked. If I knew that was a problem, when you had the engine out twice I would have asked you to fix it. That would have been the time to do it. And I have spoken to two mechanic about this. And again I will say to you I bought the truck only 31/2 months prior and the owner said he had the timing chain done. You were the one who told me after we bought the car back to you a third time (one week after the main seal was done) that the car isn't worth fixing. If you have audio in your station I think you can go back and check it and you will see that's why you said. When I was discussing it with you, you became very dismissive. This is how I felt about our transactions. I came to you in good faith and trusting in your expertise as a mechanic and business owner. Again I will repeat the same thing, I would have never called you back after I left your station if I didn't feel you were very rude and disrespectful. I was trying to tell you that I owned the car since 2010, I didn't tint the windows I bought the car that way and your suggestion to just feel it off yourself is somewhat ridiculous. I researched this when I left you and if it was done in the factory it cannot be just peeled off. With that in mind you were no help in trying to help me solve a problem that I had- which you said was the tint. I'm glad you feel you did the right thing because you have to live with that. I recently bought my 1993 Mercedes to N and M. My ASR light went on and it got so bad that the car was barely drivable. Because the car is so old, it took several days to diagnose the problem. Finally, one of Ralph's mechanics, Odie, located an old scanner that diagnosed the problem..the mass air sensor. The part was replaced and with that, the ASR problem was solved as well as a secondary problem..surging while in Park or Neutral..a problem that has plagued the car for years, and I might add, deemed not fixable by the MB dealer! Now the car runs fine and thanks to Ralph and his expert crew, my ancient MB has gotten a new lease on life. BTW, Ralph has helped keep the old girl on the road for years now and helped me keep my recently departed 2003 Chrysler minivan on the road for 14 years and 121K miles. N & M Automotive Corp is hands-down one of the best repair shops. Like many, I shudder at the idea of having my car fixed, but I was in dire need of repair. Yesterday I took my car (Honda FIT 2008) in because of the engine light. I met with Ralph, who, by the way personifies the air of a complete gentlemen with impeccable customer service, explaining what was wrong including recommendation for repair. Other than driving, I don't know much about cars, aside from changing the oil, filling the tire, etc. As far as I'm concerned he could have told me anything. Well, perhaps, I'm stretching it a bit, but I think you get my point. Bottom line, it's hard to find a repair shop where you're treated with a level of respect and regard, especially when feeling somewhat vulnerable because you need repair. Ralph has a gentle demeanor, seemingly honest soul and impeccable customer service -- and these qualities seem to permeate throughout the shop, from one car repairman to the next. I've been to many car repair shops and quite a few fail to grasp the importance of customer service, let alone honesty and respect. For these qualities alone, I will definitely return when necessary. (I hope, however, that isn't in the near future. I'm just saying). One final note, the repair service was fairly priced. read more

I began taking my cars to Ralph and Howie at N&M in the mid-nineties when I was just starting out in my career and desperate for an honest mechanic for my old Datsun. Although I had worked on cars as a kid, with electronics added to them more and more, it was very difficult to know whether a mechanic was making up a repair or a price or being honest. Initially, I priced a few things at various places, like a clutch replacement on that old Datsun, and began to suspect that Ralph and Howie might actually be looking out for my best interests. Two decades and more than a half-dozen vehicles later, I'm convinced that they are looking out for me and are the best around. Not only are they honest, they are great diagnosticians and mechanics, hunting down some difficult problems with Sherlock Holmes-like techniques. Recently, they attached a gas pressure gauge above my side-view mirror while I used the car, in order for them to determine whether a random and sporadic stalling problem was caused by the fuel pump. If the fuel pressure changed or not would provide them with an important "clue" as to what was causing the car to stall. This is just one example as to how they have saved me thousands in repairs. They even contacted Toyota experts for insights, and many of them were stumped. With today's cars all full of electronics, which can be as touchy in a car as they can at home, I used to dread going to a mechanic, especially at dealerships.
