My tires were feeling shaky and unstable so I headed here for a quick check. I learned my tires were worn down pretty bad. I purchased two new tires and placed on the front and moved my front tires to the back. He topped off my oil for free!!! I was out within one hour. That was $354 well spent. First, let me tell you I am shocked that this auto repair chain store is not more highly rated. I understand that people tend to complain more than they commend, but that's not usually what I expect from Yelp. OK, climbing off my soapbox to tell you this: Saturday night my car wouldn't start after driving it all day and then just sitting inside to have a meal, quickly. It died, despite the fact that I just paid more than $1000 for a new alternator and some new belts. The person from the towing company who jumped my car suggested that it would be better to have changed the battery as well; makes sense when you have a bad alternator. This morning, the Monday thereafter, it shut off again, just from sitting inside for 5 to 10 minutes. Luckily, I came back in the middle of the day and it started again. So I wasn't going to mess around any longer. On my way home, I knew I would pass this Pep Boys. I called them when I was just a mile away and asked if they would be able to sell me a new battery and install it. The man assured me saying come right in. His name is Christian, he and Lenny behind the desk, took the keys and had me in and out so fast I couldn't even get to know them. Charged me just over $200, which I expect for a battery installation, sale and disposal of the other battery. Car is running fine now and I really recommend this Pep Boys. Worst Pep Boys location I have ever been to -- avoid at all costs. I came in with a low tire an hour before closing. Instead of properly inspecting it, the employee simply filled my damaged tire with air and told me it was "still good." He claimed he washed it down and that there was no damage, then handed me my keys back. As I was getting into my car, I could literally see the gate coming down behind me. This felt rushed and unsafe. If a tire is damaged, adding air and sending a customer back on the road is not acceptable. This is a serious safety issue, not just poor customer service. Never. Ever. Again. Took my RX 350 in to replace a defective sensor and left with several other problems that resulted in 2 lost workdays, further repair service from Lexus, and flatbed service, twice, at a total cost over $3000 more than the original fix. Lexus report, "Intake hoses and line are routed incorrectly" and "hardware installed incorrectly". They also broke my fuel injectors, which they had to repair. Extremely Disappointed with Pep Boys Baldwin (Store #283) I had a terrible experience at this Pep Boys location. I purchased two new tires in August 2023 along with the Road Hazard Warranty, which is supposed to cover repairs and replace the tire if it can't be safely repaired. Fast forward several months later, I brought my vehicle back because one of the tires was damaged. Instead of honoring the warranty and replacing the tire, they just patched it. Not only was the patch job a temporary fix, but now the tire sensor (TPMS) on that wheel doesn't work--something that wasn't an issue before their repair. I paid for the protection plan in good faith, expecting quality service and peace of mind. Instead, I got a patch, a malfunctioning sensor, and a runaround. When I contacted the store about the issue, I was met with little concern and no resolution. If you're thinking about trusting this location for tires or warranty coverage--don't. They are really nice when u get there but they try to rip you off. I took my car to get a new battery, but they told me that the battery was good, instead the alternator was bad and needed to be changed. So they told me $800 for the alternator, then battery (first off why cahnge the battery if it was ok) and labor would come up to $1100...he then said cause of my unexpected face that he would throw in a 10% discount. Like that would make much difference...anyways, I said I could not at the time, so I took the car the next day to a family mechanic whom after checking it said the alternator was fine and the battery needed to be changed. So this tell you what a group of scammers they are...would not recommend you going there as you may just get scammed. read more

I brought my vehicle in for an inspection and was told it failed due to issues with the brakes. The price I was quoted for the repairs was around $1300, which was quite a shock considering that the brakes had been repaired just the previous year. When I questioned if I had a warranty on last year's work, I was met with a dismissive response. I decided to take my car to Midas for a second opinion and was pleasantly surprised to find that they quoted me $300 less for the same repairs. When I spoke to another representative at Pepboys about the situation, I was informed about the warranty on rotors and was advised to speak to the manager about a possible credit. Unfortunately, when I discussed the matter with the manager, he was also dismissive and insisted that the only way I could receive a credit was if I brought the car back to them - something I am not willing to do given the exorbitant pricing compared to the competition. Arrived at 4:45 pm tonight, Saturday 3/2/24. I called in advance to mount 4 new tires and alignment. My car has a faulty ignition so I explained not to turn completely to left. Don't think he understood. waited one hour and then he tells me too late for alignment. Asked to just do the tire change. Then he comes out and tells me not turning the ignition off to left is too complicated. Not only are these guys not too bright or competent, they are overpriced. Goodyear Freeport open late. $50. less to mount and balance 4 tires. Explained the key issue to the tech and understood in seconds. Now I understand all the poor reviews for Pep Boys. I made an appointment with Pep-Boys to do a front-end alignment the next day. I showed up at the appointed time and they took the car into the shop. The manager (whatever) came to me a little later and told me that some repairs were needed before they could do the alignment. He told me that my ball joints were very loose and my tie-rod ends were about to fail and my front tires had a bad wear pattern and that all were dry-rotted and needed to be replaced as well. The cost of all this work would be $1700. I went into the garage to look at the car. The car was up in the air so I shook the wheels but could not detect any play or looseness in the front wheels. I also felt the road surface of the tires but felt no " cupping" or bad wear patterns. I have felt bad wear patterns on other tires before. I also could not see any cracks in the tires that would indicate dry-rot. Took my car to Red Line where they did the alignment that same day for $95. read more

Wow, I wish I'd thought to look at the reviews before bringing our charity's minivan here for service on a misfiring fuel cylinder which was causing the check engine light to come on. I had a coupon for 10% off repairs, and since we're a 501c3 we weren't supposed to be charged sales tax. They told us we needed to replace the entire ignition coil, including the wires and spark plugs... so they did the work - and didn't apply the 10% off coupon, AND charged us sales tax. A month later they still haven't reimbursed us... and the check engine light came back on again within a day or two of getting it back! They also told us the battery was dead and we needed to buy a new one. ORLY?! Bullshit. They obv left something open or on, because I insisted they charge it and it worked fine and has continued to work fine ever since. To add insult to injury, we started hearing a new vibrating or bumping sound under the hood. I finally looked closely at the work they'd done, and realized they needed to remove the power steering fluid reservoir in order to do the work, but THEY FORGOT TO SCREW THE BOLTS BACK IN!!!! Brought my car in on Sunday as engine light was on. I was told I needed a new thermostat which I agreed to. I picked up my car and paid 822. which included an oil change. When I got home I reviewed some receipts and saw the same Pep Boys replaced the thermostat a year ago. I went back this morning and was told the manager and assistant manager would not be in today and try back next week. In addition, they replaced the water pump 6/23 which had to be replaced by the dealership 1/24. Very unsatisfied and will be disputing charge with my credit card company. read more

WARNING! Do not go here. I came in to get new tires, they completely destroyed my rims. The "mechanics" couldn't get the lug nuts off so I suppose they thought that a hammer would work better. They ended up destroying the lugs and chipping all around the rim. (See pictures below). Notice how some lug caps are left on while others have the caps completely stripped off. Also, notice the dents/chips to the rim. When I saw this, I asked to speak to a manager, but there wasn't one on site (he left early). The service manager, Abdool Azim, is refusing to work with me even though he originally said it would be fixed. We'll see if this gets fixed and I will provide an update. Stay away! Service technicians are incompetent. Brought my wife's car in for rear brakes last fall. Pep Boys said I needed calipers too. The bill was $850. Next day I was driving her car when I heard loud banging from rear wheel well. I immediately brought vehicle to closest auto garage where mechanic showed me newly installed caliper was missing a bolt and wheel lugs where only hand tightened. This could have been a bad car accident should that wheel come off on the highway. Manager of Baldwin store acknowledged mistake and offered free oil change. This May I brought my Volt in for an oil change. When I received car back I found grease all over interior of car and exterior hood. I later found the tires were not rotated as stated so on bill. I also found my front passenger side 1/4 panel bent out. Upon further inspection I found interior part of wheel well crumpled up. I brought car to 2 body shops and both agreed damaged occurred when tech put car on lift improperly. Manager denied damages occurred at his shop and I'm left holding a $2100 bill. After diagnostic tests and spending almost $3000 to get my car fixed, my car was still inoperable and I had to buy a whole new one. The real issue with my car they did not disclose with me until I spent the money. Had I known it was a head gasket issue from when they looked at my car TWICE in the beginning, I would've never attempted to fix it and would've invested that into a new car instead. Yes, I am a woman and yes they took advantage of that. My car was in and out of pep boys for a month straight because every time they did work, the car still wasn't fixed. On November 4th 2024, I took my car for an oil change, they changed the oil alright; however, the genius who changed the oil did not put the oil cap back on. Three days later the car broke down, checked the hood, oil all over the vehicle, I called Pep Boys, they were nice enough to tow the car for free, BUT they tried to stick me 750 dollars for a starter for a 2007 Honda Civic, I told them it is a job that take less than hour, a starter for that car is less than 250$ and the oil spill probably got in the starter gear, finally I towed the car to my Mechanic and my mechanic showed me the oil that affected the starter, Now I am having engine code issues, I forgot to mention that I told them I will give them three hundred dollars to change the starter, the manager refused and I am glad he did, since I am having engine issues, I am filing a lawsuit in district court tomorrow to force them to do the right thing. From a business point of view they are not very smart since I have three vehicles, and I always take my car to them, needless to say that I will never do business with them read more

Very poor experience! Had an older BMW serviced at PepBoys Baldwin and asked for a NY State Inspection and the 120 pt inspection (mainly to get the carfax). After the work was done (needed 2 new tires and brakes - totaling over $1500), I asked for the Carfax and they had no idea about the Carfax. They told me I had to go Carfax and pay. I showed them online ad and they still had no clue. I also pointed to the sign behind the counter that showed the 120 pt inspection with the free carfax. The manager (I think his name was Abdul) came out and said he knew nothing about the carfax, so I painfully had to show him the ad and the sign behind him. After 15 minutes of this, he finally had someone go print out the carfax and give to me. Then when I looked at my bill they charged me the full $129 for this service when it was on sale for $79.99. So the manager said I should see a credit on my statement in a few days but he had no receipt or invoice for me. So now I have to check my CC statement in a few days and going to assume it will not be there and then imagine will have to battle them for this $50 credit. Just a poor experience and will take my business elsewhere.... Update... As expected after a week no credit on my CC statement, Pep Boys Manager is full of crap. Went through the Pep Boys corporate customer service and they said they will assist. Going to file a chargeback with my credit card. Avoid this store at all costs!!!! read more

tried to get tire fixed yesterday because PSI dropped dropped from 35 to 15 psi 3 times within 36hours. I came there on October18 at around 730pm n I was told the air compressor was broken n all mechanics had gone home. Then I returned on October 19 and was told I had to wait 1.5 hours for my car to be examined. The manager Abdul and the young man wearing glasses working counter were very unprofessional. The young man told me I was a "pain in his ass" And refused to do my rotation and lifetime alignment (purchased nov 2021 $189) after they claimed they couldn't find leak. I was Treated unfairly because I am a black female veteran. I have veteran plates on my vehicle. They had put the wrong vehicle on my paperwork as well. The store is also very dirty. AVOID THIS PEP BOYS!!!!!!! Went to pep boys for a simple oil change and inspection. Filled out everything online to set it up picked my oil told them everything i needed. I get there to drop it off and verify they have all the info they need from me. One of younger guys up front clearly do not want to be there and felt like i was bothering them to get off their cell phone's just to talk to me. They do the oil change and use the most expensive oil they had in stock for my car despite me picking out a cheaper one. Prior to that i get a call saying i need rear break pads and tires. My pads are fairly new both are less than 50% warn well within inspection. My tire i agreed is close but within inspection i plan on buying them and replacing them soon. I say i dnt want them replaced just the inspection today. They said okay no problem. I get to the shop with a $130 bill for oil change and inspection. I go okay he made a mistake with the oil i am not too mad its good for the car not going to argue even though its their fault. I get back to my car no inspection sticker... they did not tell me they failed me and charged me for inspection for taking small look at the car which they state is a complimentary inspection. If u know your going to fail someone for tires by taking a quick look u really think u should charge them $40 for an inspection and not tell them they failed just charge them and send them away like everything is good. I confronted them and it took them 5 min to just find the paperwork on the inspection they just did to tell me it failed and not give me details about how warn or by how much it failed by. Rather than waste my time arguing w these criminals that clearly do not care about the customers i took my business elsewhere. $130 for an oil change what a joke Update: took my car into another shop and they passed inspection and suggested i wait to buy brakes because they still have a lot left. Passed inspection with the same tires and breaks the next day. I will be buying my tires and breaks from this shop and bringing my other cars for maintenance here now. Not pep boys. Train your employees! What is the point of filling out what you want online if they don't even look at it and ask you in person than still get it wrong? I have a fleet vehicle so when I got the receipt was shocked to see an invoice for $500. When I inquired, they stated they received authorization from my fleet provider to replace 2 tires. Why? Horrible experience! Please DO NOT go here for a New York State Inspection. I arrived at 3:55pm for my 4:00 pm appointment. They took my car keys at 4:00pm but didn't take my car into the shop until 4:15pm. While I watched the worker drive away with my car he seemed uncomfortable driving it. I watched him stop and go stop and go through the parking lot. No one was in front or behind him while he drove my car through the parking lot; so I didn't understand the issue. My car drove completely fine before I arrived at Pep Boys. At 4:45pm I asked the manager what was going on with my car, usually inspections don't take very long and I was concerned. The manager told me that inspections take up to one hour because they "strip" your car apart, taking off the wheels, looking at the brakes, looking under the hood etc. According to the manger "this isn't your mom and pop shop with a quick inspection" I informed him that I was unaware of this. Also, I made the appointment online and according to the website the time slot is for 30 minutes. NOT 1 hour. He told me that they go by DMV protocols. While I understand certain requirements need to be met. I was not informed, and concerned they could potentially ruin the car. One hour and fifteen minutes later I failed my inspection due to a license lightbulb that was out and a control arm. The price to get the lightbulbs fixed was 52 dollars and the control arm 330 dollars. I told them please give me my car back I need to leave. I have used this store for years. There is usually an issue . Last time I brought my wife's car in for an oil change I was told that the tires had tire rot. Rather than having the tires replaced I took the car to a different tire shop. There I was told the tires were fine no need to buy anything new, and I should come back in 6-12 months. I went to the service area this afternoon and there were nobody a head of me I decided to leave my car and have a friend pick me up.and go have lunch. I came back 2 hours later and found my car in it's original parking space. They apparently never programmed them as my car has been screaming TPMS fault. Came back a few days later told me 3 hour wait. Made appointment for following week , again told me 3 hour wait. Abdool Azim is easily the worst Pep Boys employee that I have ever had the displeasure to meet. While trying to drop my car off for service just around 7:40am (they opened at 7:30), the place was completely empty. I was speaking with Christian, whom I had dealt with the week prior. No one is working, and there's no cars in the maintenance bays. I was then told that I needed to leave my car all day for a break flush because they were completely booked. I was confused. I brought to Christians' attention that it's an hour job, and there were still appointments available online. That's when Abdool decided he needed to tell me something about myself. He told me to leave and take my car to Jiffy Lube then. When I tried to explain that I had a warranty on the car they they would service, he felt the need to use flex some more of his retail worker muscles and curse me out, and state that I was bossing Christian around because he happened to be a person of color. Mind you, Christian is holding back a smile and not engaging this guy at all. I continue to book a future appointment with Christian, and before leaving, Abdool decides he's not done and has some more remarks for me as I leave. Brought car in for an oil change, was told it would be 45 minutes to an hour, and they would call me when it was ready, ok, that's fine. Nearly 90 minutes, after not hearing anything, went back, was told 'I was next in line" and would be another 45 minutes to an hour. Clearly, it's a case of the check's in the mail. I will avoid this place like the plague from now on. Last summer: I asked them to recharge my AC. $400 later, the AC was recharged... along with a bunch of other things that I didn't ask for or want. They said, "if you don't, you're just gonna lose your freon". So... $400 spent. Less than a year later, I turn on the AC and it blows hot. So, I now I have to have the AC recharged by someone who actually knows about ACs. Another story: my wife brought one of my cars in to have a tire repaired. Pep Boys called and said it couldn't be repaired and "we should replace all four tires." Note: the four tires had less than 15% wear on them. So, I called them out on it. They insisted the tires should all be replaced. I reminded them that the tires were all still under warranty. They hung up on me rudely. They kept my car for 8 hours. Guess what they did? Once they learned they wouldn't make a buck on me by replacing tires that are under warranty, they went ahead and repaired the one tire like I asked. read more
