The cucumber salad with white anchovies and vinegary dressing was also a great play on crunchy and soft textures as well as fresh flavours. Some items are quite overpriced for what you get, like the prosciutto plate which was simply drizzled with olive oil and scattered with a few raw almonds and dried fig bits. The plates are only small so the cost can add up if you're not careful, so come with a nibbles-and-drinks approach rather than a full-blown dinner in mind.

OK .. back at it. The restaurant section sits just to the right and behind this counter - there are long communal tables, smaller tables, outdoor tables and sweet intimate table in the cellar (which happened to be our table). It turned out to be a great little spot since outside is fairly loud (as you would expect from an italian eatery) but the only issue I had was we were often interrupted by the waiters grabbing bottles of wine and sparkling (yes the cool room was also in this cellar). The food was some of the best Italian I've had - the 4 of us decided to order a main as an entree to share and of course, this was not a problem for the chef - the grilled scampi and scallop dish was delicious and was a perfect starter. We also had the shaved cabbage and pecorino which was such a pleasant accompaniment to the scampi. The mains that followed did not disappoint - the quail with fennel and blood orange was SUPERB - this was ME in a dish !! I was told the squid ink pasta with prawn was amazing and the lemon thyme clam pasta dish was also a hit. Took Mater here for her bday last night, and while the prices have gone up since last time I was here (around $18-25 for entree, and $30-37 for main), the food is still excellent quality. Kicked off with a cheeky shiraz and delicious complimentary bread and butter (sprinkle it with rock salt, oh yeah) and dove right into the beef tartare with cornichons, anchovies, capers, crostini and spring onions. It was top notch steak, that much was clear, and delicately spiced and flavoured. Mum's filet mignon was beautifully medium rare with a morish jus, and the honey spiced panacotta for dessert wasn't at all sweet, the chef unafraid to lace it with tart berries, unlike many of his contemporaries who rely too much on making these things syrupy sweet. The side potatoes were burnt and not that great sadly, and the side veggies were a bit wilted or overcooked or something, but really, when the mains are this good that's just a footnote in the meal itself. Bonus points to the Italian waiter who made my mum some limonatta with fresh lemons when she asked for the little bottles that they didn't have.

My friend had the lamb shoulder which also looked delicious and she loved it. Our fries, encased in miniature fry baskets, were perfectly seasoned. The dipping sauces were rich and creamy and left us begging for more. To say our burgers were delicious is an understatement. The dining room itself was a lot more casual than expected, but modern and inviting nonetheless with green leather banquettes, high ceilings and an open kitchen. Service was efficient yet friendly, our waitress describing their specials in detail and encouraging a shared starter of twice-baked gruyere soufflé with rocket side salad (great tip!). Main courses were just as delicious - I sampled a grilled snapper fillet atop finely sliced fennel, sautéed down into a slightly sweet yet aniseed sauce with fresh peas and baby steamed clams, while the scotch fillet also came to the table smothered in creamy caramelised onion, a million layered potato galette and well-seasoned witled silverbeet. Dessert was simple but offered pretty generous portion sizes - we tried the rhubarb frangipane tart and chocolate parfait with macerated strawberries - but I liked that their menu also offered petit fours at $2.50 a pop if you only felt like a little mouthful of something sweet (the spiced marshmallow, a particularly tempting offer).
