I honestly thought I drove past this place that it was just a neighborhood home. It's not flashy or obvious, and I realized that's just part of the charm. They have great prices on draft beers, service is friendly & so wonderful. I've only been here twice, once during the pandemic and it was outside seating only (glad those days are over). And recently, getting on a shuttle bus to Tailspin Ale Fest. It is a small neighborhood bar that has quite some years on it and you can tell. I was greeted by the hosts for the shuttle bus and got a complimentary beer for choosing Nachbar as my pick up location. I did get my complimentary beer and left a generous tip. They had Nords Donuts for food for this event. Beer and Donuts? Very odd combination, was hoping for The Post Pizza or something that was real food. It was free so no complaints other than it was an odd combo. Note: they don't serve food at Nachbar. The inside is kinda dated and there is good seating. Bathrooms are set up like Mag Bar and Kerns Korner. IFYKYK. The outside is more spacious than the inside. They do have a nice patio. As for the inside it looks cool and they have plenty of board games and plenty of local beer on taps that you don't see at most bars. One thing is for sure... Nachbar has some of the most comfortable bar stools in Louisville. High curved back, swivel, cushioned - ah, it's the little things. We got there right as they had opened, so we had the bar to ourselves for a little while. I want to The Nachbar with a colleague for a couple beers after work one afternoon. This spot earns its reputation as a dive bar and also manages to wear it well! I encountered the appropriate ratio of regulars at the bar and was impressed at the variety on the draft list. I had a great German draft from Andechs and would gladly go back for more. Service is at the bar only and the bartender was affable and efficient. The decor has some clear German connections and there's a certain charm in how it all comes together. As a fluent German-speaker, I am embarrassed to admit how long it took me to realize that Nachbar is the perfect name for this place. It means "Neighbor" and the bar is situated on the corner in a residential area. Also it is *in* Germantown. But in my defense, whenever the bar came up in conversation, I was mostly focused on the drinks we intended on having. I decided we *had* to go in tonight after being told that they have my absolute favorite beer on tap. Stigel Grapefruit Radler. I was introduced to radler beer when I lived in Germany, and enjoyed at least a case of this particular brand and style last November when I was in Vienna visiting a friend on vacation. This is the first time EVER I have found a true Radler in the States. And I am so, so excited it's here. A bit pricey per glass ($4.50, but as an unfamiliar import, not bad) but it's totally my jam and a great beer for the summer (light and a little sweet). I don't know if their having this on tap is temporary....I'll have to go back to find out. And have another glass or two. read more

Nachbar is a dive bar! Reasonable drink prices, generous pours on the mixed drinks. No frozen drinks. No food served. Friendly, interesting people and their dogs, and a very relaxed atmosphere are the big draws. No food is served, but you can bring your own without questions or disapproving glances. Parking is available on the street. The bartender is friendly and accommodating. I am told the bar morphs from a blue collar watering hole to hipster hangout most nights. I was there with a neighborhood crowd. Dogs are welcome and some appear to be regulars. Sitting on the back deck enjoying a beer was not unlike a laid back dog park with the dogs visiting each other while moving from table to table for a little attention (and treats from those who prepared for the experience). read more

My beloved Nachbar, how I miss being able to walk home at the end of a fun-filled night spent on your patio or barstool. Years of living in Germantown made this place my local, my neighborhood joint, my Cheers. Although I moved out of state and then back to another hopping neighborhood, I still come to enjoy the kind vibe at the Nach. Nachbar has everything you want in a neighborhood dive - a great jukebox, live music, cats/dogs prowling about, a front and back patio, and strong drinks. Their rotating taps always have something intriguing that I'll enjoy (in summertime its Stiegl Radler or Wittekerke). Plenty of bourbons and vodkas keep me happy year round. No where else in town can I get a Makers and Ale 8 at this price! People call Nach a hipster bar, but I've seen everyone from old timers who grew up in Gtown to soccer moms with babies in strollers enjoying each other's company at this meeting place. Nachbar brings folks together over drinks to share stories and spend some time away from their devices to appreciate each other. Front patio. Back patio. Nicely nestled among Germantown shotguns and not in a strip mall. Pretty much your ideal neighborhood bar. The best part is the beer. Sixteen taps, no crap on tap. To their credit, you can still get $2 Old Style or hard liquor if that's your preference. But you shouldn't go that route here, unless you're the type to get a hot dog at a Chinese restaurant. Great dark, friendly dive in Germantown that offers a great list of beers both on tap and by the bottle or can - both lists are also super helpful with descriptions and style codes. There is also a full bar with nicely priced spirits and a small selection of wine if that's more your speed. The crowds are friendly and regardless of what you hear are not just hipsters (though it does get very on weekend nights), but actually vary pretty widely across sex, age, race, sexuality, etc. Dogs are even allowed, though only outside in their fenced in backyard. read more

Don't get me wrong, it's a nice bar, but not really a place I'm interested in going back to. It's cute and looks like a little German house from the outside, and is right in the middle of a neighborhood. I love the homey feel of the place, like your walking right into your friend's house to grab a beer. Like most of the other reviews mention, it is very hipster; not a place you would see 100 wasted frat boys at. There was hardly anyone on the inside when we got there, it seemed like almost everyone was out on the patio. We didn't get a chance to go out there, but it looks nice from the entrance. Nachbar is what it is. It's divey and wonderful and something interesting always happens to me here. Sometimes there are dogs. Those are happy days. They have a jukebox with some good stuff in it. The bartenders are really nice and will help you pick out a beer you like. They always have some pretty interesting stuff on tap here. They also have a full bar, but this isn't the kind of place to get a fancy cocktail. You might not love what you get. Nachbar has a sweet patio. It's pretty big and really nice to chill out in with a beer in the summer. The only thing is the smokers tend to also love the patio, so if you can't stand smokiness, it might not be for you. One weird thing--the sink to wash your hands at after using the bathroom is just out in the open, not in the bathroom itself. It doesn't bother me, but if you're confused and can't find the sink, it's right outside the bathroom door. It tends to get pretty hipster, but everyone's welcome here. And can anyone define it without resorting to a cute coffee table book for, ironically, "hipper" living rooms? Well, I bring this up because everyone likes to talk about how Nachbar is the hipster hangout or whatever, and that's fine. It's a lazy conclusion, but people posses the innate desire to categorize things, which is totally cool. Such as life. In reality though, Nachbar is actually an anything-goes, wonderful hangout spot that appeals to a variety of crowds. There's no place like it. Nachbar is my hangout. First, Nachbar is totally off the beaten path. It's as if a UFO just dropped it in the middle of a shotgun-house laden neighborhood. Inside, it looks like your grandmother's basement - wood paneling, tacky paintings, owl sculpture, jukebox spanning fifty years of rock and roll (what, your grandma didn't have one?). Dogs are allowed inside as long as they behave... which is a funny thought since most dogs behave better than humans do when they're beers deep. Nachbar recognizes that. You can often find some of the city's food trucks outside too - a nice perk considering, as pointed out earlier, Nachbar is an island onto itself. And they have the most massive outdoor patio for the warmer evenings. Sometimes live music too, including some national acts. Shows are always free. As for the products sold - Nachbar's specialty is their sweeping selection of drafts that covers everything from super esoteric craft beers to more recognized imports and domestics. And the staff is super speedy, even when the place is packed wall to wall. I love Nachbar. I refer to it as my "retreat," in that, if we go somewhere and it sucks, we can always retreat to Nachbar, and it'll always be fun. This has happened on several occasions. I have been to Nachbar a few times, since I have always heard this was the bar to be when in Germantown, and I have to say, they were right! Nachbar is one of the most popular dive bars in Germantown, and it really is just an awesome spot to grab a beer with some friends and enjoy the eclectic atmosphere. The bartenders are super nice and make sure you get what you need. They mix the drinks awesomely too, which is always sort of a hit or miss situation when it comes to dive bars. The prices are reasonable, and they have a variety of drinks for you. I usually prefer ciders over beer, and they always have a few to choose from. This place is always jamming, so take note of that! It can get loud, but it really depends on the crowd. I mean, you would also expect that from a dive bar. They have seating inside (a couple of couches are an option!) or outside on the patio. The bar can sit a large party, which we were able to do a few times, but it really just depends on how busy it is. Overall, this place is a great hangout spot. In the winter time it does get pretty packed, which I don't love, but hey, that does often come in hand with a bar that has a known reputation. Local foreign and rockstar beer selection, affordable prices, killer smoker's patio, dirty in a way that reminds you how in contrast plastic is for the burbs. Soul is rarer to find these days so when you find it lap it up and bath in its sultry glory. What defines soul? In my eyes, generally music that never made it to the poop charts, a bartender that suggests instead of nods, an ambience with scars to prove it's seen some things and if you ask has a great story, and in general just by showing up you come home with a story yourself. So I happened upon this bar the first time I visited Louisville and the experience I had here along with a time-limited selection of a few other spots led in the end to my moving permanently to this town. Here's my Nachbar cherry: I came to the Lou midweek, I think it was a Tuesday and my hostess had only lived here half a baker's dozen months herself but had heard Nach was if not "the" then "a" place to be. We snagged a LEO and low and behold it was spelling bee night. We decided we could spell better than most drunks so we went. We arrived and were informed that spelling bee night had been replaced by jazz night. Jazz is one of those 'in the mood' events for me where at least a button down and martini are in order, but given there wasn't a button or a martini in the joint we decided it was ok. Whoa. It turned out to be a 15 piece group consisting of U of L music graduates who ripped jazz a new Heine Brothers. Good grief they were good. Have you heard an amazing jazz solo before? Try 15.
