Nachbar is quite the establishment in Louisville for being a neighborhood bar. While a fair amount of people that frequent the place seem to live down the road, people flock here from miles (3-5 miles outside of Germantown to be exact) away. It's a great place to have an obscure craft beer for an affordable price. Or to have a Woodford Reserve for 5 bucks on a Saturday night. It's a great place to run into your neighbor. Or to sit at the middle school cafeteria-esque outdoor tables with the same group of people you came with and have known for the past 20 years. There's also a ton of fun ironic and not ironic bathroom wall writing to ponder over. The only thing its not good for is to order just one $4 beer and pay with a card. Only in Louisville would one call someone wearing jeans NOT from Wal-mart with a black t shirt a hipster. I see very little true hipster activity in this place, however, I am from NYC. Most of what I view these regulars as are fashion followers who are still taking clues from the Urban Outfitters catalog, say, three years ago. Staff is very friendly and can guide you in the way of selecting the beer of your particular poison. Seating is unique, take a stool at the bar, sit at a spot that will give you flashbacks to a basement in the 1970's, or take a gander out at picnic tables in the back, complete with 4" of rocks. Many folks bring their dogs here, which is very comforting in a hippie sort of way. A fun game to play: "Is She Dirty?" - watch the rest rooms. The women's and men's restrooms empty out to a single sink. Watch girls and guys, and see who washes their hands, and who doesn't. Gross, but fun to pass the time. read more

I used to frequent Nachbar but hadn't been there in a long time until last Saturday night. I was reminded why I like it so much. Nachbar is a very casual place to drink good craft beer (or other beverages if you prefer) in Germantown. It's a little hard to find - in fact, some people say you should get an award if you find it. The inside is quite dark but the front and back patios are large and great places to hang out with friends on a nice night. Nachbar is dog friendly which I personally love (they have a list of dog rules outside). There is no food so not the place for you if you're hungry. The bartenders are friendly and helpful as you take a look at the draft list or extensive bottle offering. The place can feel a bit grungy inside but that's part of the charm. It gets really busy late at night. We arrived at 8:30 and the place was fairly empty but by 10pm, it filled up quickly and was going strong when we left around 11pm. If you like good beer and a dive bar feel, I highly recommend visiting this drinking spot in Germantown! read more

Nachbar is in the heart of the Germantown Neighborhood and is a great good weather bar. I'm a big fan of dive bars, but Nachbar seems to miss the mark when considering dive"ness," which is a good thing! The Nachbar has a fantastic selection of beers and liquor available for its patrons. The layout is great, there are two outdoor patios, one in the front with round tables and the other in the back with long picnic tables and benches. There's also a small covered area for bands to play or for braving the outside during any inclement weather. The inside has small tables with stools, a long bar, an old TV to catch UofL games on, and some old couches to lounge on. The rotating tap list is the best part of Nachbar besides its location. If you like beer, you'll definitely find something you enjoy on the list, and more often than not, there are at least 4 beers I want to try or try again on their tap list. The liquor is pretty standard, but is always mixed well. Nachbar does not have any food, so if you show up and get all of those tasty drinks and beer, prepare yourself to hike it to the Post or somewhere else near by if you get a drunken appetite. Living in Germantown makes Nachbar one of the best places to stop by if you're a beer enthusiast, enjoy late night jukeboxes or bands, enjoy seeing other people in Germantown, or if you just like to have a good time. Love this bar! Hard to find places where you can just chill and live your best life, and Nach definitely makes you feel at home. There's ALWAYS good music playing. Also personally, I can never find Lambics anywhere, and this is the one place where they sell em and serve em right. read more

The first time I was taken to Nachbar I asked my friend who was driving if he was lost. It's in the middle of a fairly quiet residential neighborhood. Kind of strange, but I guess it works. I've been here a few times now and I've enjoyed myself thoroughly except for this past weekend (which totally made it lose a star) -- the bathrooms were broken. PORT O POTTIES. Seriously. In 100 degree Kentucky summer heat. Need we say icky? Lots of hipsters, lots of good beer, reasonable prices, cool patio. Just really, really would like indoor plumbing next time. read more

There's something almost magical about this bar that made it feel instantly cozy as soon as we sat down. I'd never been here before, and neither of us were locals, but it felt very welcoming. Maybe it was the instant service, or the insanely fair prices. Or the cat who sat in the bar stool next to me. Yes, I do mean a feline was seriously sitting next to me. It just seemed right somehow. They have a noteworthy selection of beers from all over. Lots of exotic imports, as well as some local brews. And they had good liquor, being sold at half the price I'm accustomed to paying. I wondered into Nachbar late on a Saturday and it was like finding the perfect watering hole. There was an attentive bar keep, dogs in sweaters (in SWEATERS!), a mix of football noise and music, and good drinks. We had a white russian and an old fashioned. Both were strong and well made. There was a mix of seating, between new barstools, and tables and chairs in the back, as well as a few select mismatched couches and chairs. It was dim and perfect. The Nachbar is my one of my favorite places to spend an evening when I visit Louisville. I enjoy seeing the queers, carhartts, and aging-hipster-literrati all in one establishment: it reminds me why I love Kentucky. The drinks are well priced and the beer selection is decent (and by decent I mean largely domestic). They could use more tables inside (how about some booths?!); they certainly have the space. The patio has a good amount of seating to accomodate smokers and non-smokers alike. Adding to the neighborhood feel (Nachbar does mean neighbor in German, no?), dogs always seems welcome at the bar, which I like. Be warned that parking is hard to come by (it is in the belly of Germantown), so be prepared to circle some blocks and park on the narrow streets. read more

Whenever I am traveling I make an effort to find a really cool dive bar, Nachbar was IT for this trip. I immediately knew it was gonna be a great place when we pulled up and there was a beer sign hanging off the side with their name on it. My suspicion was only verified when we walked inside and saw all the cool vintage decorations and saw an Irish band playing in Germantown okay, so it was the day before St. Patrick's Day but it cracks me up. The crowd definitely has got a hipster vibe, but its older and people will talk to you so its not stuck up like the bars I don't like where I am from in NY. Also they let dogs inside, there was a guy in overalls selling beef jerky, it looks like it has a nice patio when the weather is warmer and the bartenders are friendly. read more

Nachbar's friendly and polite staff let me wander all around with my drink and made small talk while checking my ID. Being an out of towner, when the cab drove through the neighborhood to get here I wasn't sure what I was getting into. I walk in and see the bartenders watching Modern Family - immediately this is place I can get into. I ask the bartender what the deal on the nitro porter - his response "its a porter made with nitro" and walks away is just about as rude as it gets, and immediately I feel like I'm at home. This place is the hipster hangout of Louisville, the place is covered in decorative owls. A good number of micro-brews to choose from, and on this particular night the fantastic "Friendly Neighborhood Big Band" was performing. This was the highlight of my business trip to Louisville - good vibes, leave you alone bartenders, and great music. Add some new friends and you have yourself a great Tuesday night. read more

Great place, friendly people, unique social mix, cheap strong libations. The place is a small old school dive, with as much or more space outside in the front and back patio areas, than there is inside. If you like fancy, skip this place. If you like quality over style and high prices, this IS the place. It gets crowded on weekends after 9-10pm, but when it is warm, the people spread out and it is a nice social realm. I enjoyed yesterday afternoon at Nachbar quite a bit. It was easy to find parking on the street. There were seats in both the shade and sun outside, and my friends were able to bring their dog, which was excellent. Although the bartender wasn't super friendly, he was relatively helpful when I asked for suggestions. A few things that could have been improved: 1) Signs on the bathrooms. Even if we're going for a gender neutral thing, then something designating that would be welcome. It's not til I walked into the left one and saw that there was no lock that I realized it must be the men's and turned around and walked back out. 2) Man, I wish there'd been music on the patio. We had good friends and conversation, but it's nice to have some background tunes going, and sadly there was none to be had. And in a place that has an actual jukebox, the promise of good music is strong. 3) Space heaters. By the time we got into evening hours, some of us were cold, and this isn't the first bar with a patio in Lou that I think would benefit enormously from some heat. Especially if they're not serving hot toddies. I'd love to come sometime and hang inside because it looks super cozy and chill. Love the owl lamp and random touches and art. read more

Nachbar has always been a neighborhood favorite and we have visited fairly frequently until tonight. The doorman refused to let my 60 year old stepfather in because he didn't have his ID. Tonight we texted that we were down at NB and my parents walked down a few blocks in the rainy weather to join us on the spur of the moment. Unfortunately the doorman wouldn't let my stepfather inside (not order a drink, he wasn't even allowed in the bar) because he didn't bring his wallet. He is very clearly over 18, 21, 28, 30, 40, whatever ID-able age you want to reference. The rude and sassy doorman didn't even ask my Mom for her ID yet turned away an obviously older white-haired man. The whole situation was just overkill. read more

I love this bar. First off, I can walk there from my house. Second, the prices are reasonable. Third, they have an amazing outdoor space where you can hang with friends, pet friendly dogs, and, often, listen to live music. It's the kind of completely unfussy place that makes it the perfect neighborhood bar. I would skip the mixed drinks here, as I find them watered down. Go for the beer--they have a nice selection that is reasonably priced. I always find the service to be friendly and fast. This bar holds up to the saying "it takes all kinds of kinds", and you will find that at Nach. If people watching is your thing, than you have struck gold because this place provides it with cheap PBRs to go along with it. The inside is tiny and reminds me of of my grandparent's basement which generally keeps me out on the patio. They also have live music from time to time but the size and set up of the bar are not the best for performances. I used to love coming to this place. The first couple times I stopped in, I was sold on the cheap, strong drinks and friendly, comfortable atmosphere. That changed last night. I was literally assaulted by a drunken bartender. Sounds crazy, I know. I purchased 3 drinks for my friends and myself; ended up costing $8.50. After a while I went to the bar for another round; got the same drinks, but it ended up being $10. This was a different bartender (about 6', heavy-set, shoulder-length strawberry blonde hair). I questioned him about it, as I only had $10 in cash and wanted to leave a tip. He was visibly drunk, and said I could just give him the $8.50. So I handed him the $10 and told him to keep the change. I went back to sit with my friends; about 10 minutes later, the drunken employee comes over to my table and asks, in a rather aggressive manner, why I lied to him about the drink pricing. I was baffled. So much for feeling comfortable. Oh no, doesn't end there though. My friends were all shocked at his behavior, so we decided to leave immediately after. As we are walking out of the door and crossing the street, this bartender runs out after me. Standing in the middle of the street he yells at me about "screwing him over" and calls me a "f*ggot". I am becoming infuriated at this point. I asked him why he felt the need to harass a customer in his place of employment, especially considering I tipped him the price difference in question. He proceeded to shove me against a vehicle. I was attempting to have a fun night with friends and not get into a fight with a raging idiot, so I do my best to escape the situation as quickly as possible. I am still absolutely dumbfounded by this experience. I hope that the owner of the bar sees this and at least questions the employee's behavior when serving paying customers. read more

I was a little hesitant to write about Nachbar because it's one of those great neighborhood bars that is so laid back and friendly, you sort of don't want to let the word out. My boyfriend lives in Louisville (I'm in Nashville) and we both love a good craft beer and low key atmosphere, so we come to Nachbar often. It's an unpretentious watering hole type of place with a great beer selection and good juke box to boot. It's a pet-friendly place, too, and I often see people with their dogs. There is a neighborhood black cat that sometimes comes by and hangs out on the bar! Pro tip: On Mondays they serve food for free, usually chili or stew that you can help yourself to. One time there was a band playing that I thought sounded pretty douche but all the douche bags were loving it and the douche haters were just saying everything sucks and chain smoking fags. Great beer list here. I went with some friends while visiting from out of town and had a good time. The booze was cheep. The bathrooms are horrible. There's a nice outdoor patio as well. Juke box was okay. A bigger selection would have been nice. Also the bartenders weren't all that friendly. Acutally the bartenders weren't friendly really in Louisville at all. I am not a huge fan of this bar but not entirely against it. It just isn't my scene. The atmosphere is what you would expect of a typical dive bar. Dark dingy and maybe even a little bit sticky. The bartenders are quick and accommodating however for everything I asked they said they didn't have. They seem to only have cheap wells or hard whisky or rum. No inbetween or anything for light weights like me. Other then that service was good and they had some kicking bands on the patio. Just try not to ask for anything fruity sweet mixed. Really fun bar for lounging and talking. It's open very late and in Germantown, perfect for bar hopping the area. Beer list is quite extensive but a few items were either tapped out or not available in bottles which always bugs me...update your menus! But overall they had plenty to choose from not just Kentucky natives but across the world. Prices are super reasonable, especially for mixed drinks. Most libations will run you $5-7. Nachbar is one of those places that I never mind visiting when someone else invites me but I would never go to on my own. The staff and other patrons are generally friendly. They have a great beer selection, but they don't serve any food at all. If you want food you have to have it delivered from a restaurant. They also allow dogs so it's not unusual to have multiple people's dogs hanging out on the patio or in the bar. Great if you are a dog person, not cool if you are not (or allergic or afraid of them). read more

Nachbar is one of my favorite Louisville establishments. It's somewhat off the beaten path, located in the middle of a neighborhood in Germantown, but plenty of non germantown residents frequent it. There are a multitude of reasons why I love this bar. It has a laid back quirky atmosphere that can be a bit cramped in the wintertime but has two enclosed patios lined with picnic tables that make it fairly easy to make new friends during warmer weather. Since the majority of people that frequent Nachbar are regulars, I seem to always run into at least one or two people I know. In addition to this, on Wednesday nights they have live Jazz music on the back patio which Is quite enjoyable. They also occasionally have bands playing on the weekends. Nachbar also has a large array of craft beers on tap ranging from $4 to $7. I find their liquor drinks to be even cheaper. While they don't serve food, more often than not, there is a food truck or two parked outside. read more

Great bar! Welcoming, great music, and they serve a helluva Manhattan. We were there in a Saturday night and it wasn't too crowded.
