Oh this cute place! I hope they pull it together before they close them self down. I love their ambiance- super welcoming soft lighting and indoor outdoor seating. The restaurant is situated amongst a string of eateries near the museum so it caters to out-of-towners. The service on the night I came is was friendly however un-attentive considering there were 6 tables at 7pm. Not that the servers were standing around doing nothing, they were just slow and took their time. The menu was so expensive considering how simple the selection - and I did come in for ramen however the only soup selection was the obligatory miso. The menu was gyoza, tempura, edamame basics with very good presentation. I ordered agadashi tofu to test skills which came out as one piece, luke warm, overly bonito'd but edible. Wine selection was a plus and I did get a generous taster since what I wanted wasn't available. Overall this place has SOOOO much potential but I would not bring my friends, colleagues or family here for the quality:price ratio. Once, this was amazing and mindblowing. Anything eaten in here was highly addictive and worth every penny. And then the staff suddenly changed. Gone were the Japanese girls who were so knowledgable about every dish, every sauce, every garnish, and in their place we got snotty Australian girls who would answer a question by taking the menus from your hands and reading them aloud, slowly and patronisingly. We attempted to go to lunch on two separate occasions. The first was half an hour before they closed. Now, if they had a restricted menu for that last half an hour, I would have understood, though I personally believe that the earliest the kitchen should close is fifteen minutes before, and that opening hours are serving hours unless the restaurant is empty. A couple were enjoying their entree but we were unceremoniously told that the kitchen was closed and we were to leave. When we inquired about the hours, to make sure we hadn't gotten them wrong, she repeated rudely that the kitchen had closed and we were to leave. Our second attempt was forty minutes before closing and the hostess visibly rolled her eyes at us and told us we were too late for lunch. When we finally made it to lunch several days later, the charming hostess recognised us and proceeded to grunt at us, snatch and shove things and not bring us our order until the other waitress took pity on us and brought us our food. There was also a take away order so bungled we didn't know what to say (my omelette entree was served on top of my udon noodles; my sister's chicken dish came with mashed potato instead of rice? Just plain bizarre.) The final nail in the coffin was dinner some months later. Our tempura was so greasy it left puddles, and the seafood had not been cleaned and was clearly not fresh - the squid and crab was little more than grey paste. The sashimi salad portion had shrunk by almost half without a price drop, and the salad was limp, the sashimi not nearly as fresh as it should be. Three dishes and two non-alcoholic drinks cost us almost $100. We were done. The manager did offer us a gift card for half the meal, but honestly we haven't been back because both the service and the food has gotten so awful that we'd rather stay home. This is a tragedy, since Nagisa was once one of the most amazing places in Newcastle and I so wish I'd tried the teppanyaki bar back when it was good. Oh well. read more

Nagisa is an amazing restaurant in my opinion, great food, friendly service (there where a couple of mixups in food portions for the family but it was fine), and a spectacular view of the harbour where at sunset you can see the sun reflected in the mirrored water. Though the experience was amazing the one thing that you do have to worry about is the prices which are quite high, but still even with this it was a lovely experience that I highly recommend. read more

I love the food at Nagisa...but I don't like the prices or the wait times. If the place is even slightly busy their kitchen can't cope. It's often my choice for a celebratory work lunch. The fish dishes (Kingfish carpaccio is my favourite!) are all interesting and beautifully presented. The karange chicken is always a crowd pleaser too. The sashimi is amazingly fresh and lightly flavoured, but a large serving is about $50 which is pretty wild. Good selection of bottled and tap beers. You go here when you want some incredible Japanese food and to feel a little bit special. read more

Some of the best Ramen I have ever eaten. Some times the service can be a bit off but is always worth the wait or small confusions. The chef, Chris, is a great bloke with talents to boot! I always enjoy some spicy food on a rainy day in Newcastle and with a nice selection of chilli oils, flakes and sauces this place doesn't disappoint. It is a little more expensive than some but the Ramen I kissed was $17 and that makes it only about $4 more than other ramen around here. I would say that it is worth the extra as it is a real meal with size and taste all above average in my opinion. read more

The prices are ridiculous!! Food was ok and servers were nice, but need some experience. Nothing served was explained and although we all ordered at the same time we had food served at all different times so some ate while others waited and just horrible timing. To pay $100+ per person per plate and have such a sucky experience is just ridiculous! Won't be back and be warned...don't go here...ever! Just horrible!! read more

We had a very poor experience at Nagisa last night... Some of us ordered ribs and received pork belly, our waiter who was doing his best to compensate also smelled bad enough for me to consider telling him and there was most likely nobody Japanese in the staff. The fish was okay but the rice undercooked so I would recommend to order sashimi and not nigiris. It may be a good place for a few drinks and nibbles after work but I would recommend anyone who knows real Japanese cuisine to stay away. read more

I came to Newcastle for a few days for work. Didn't feel like hotel food so googled Sushi restaurants and decided to try Nagisa because of all the reviews. To my amazement the food is great and wait staff very attentive. Will recommend to all my friends. read more
