This place was suuuper busy Sunday morning. Thank goodness we called ahead to get your names on the list. Two pedicures were well received on this cold morning, however the heat inside this place was not on and we had to keep our coats on to stay warm. No matter... The pedicure was pretty standard. Soak, scrubs, hot towel, polish. There's a standard and deluxe pedi but I'm not sure what constitutes either. However, we were charged for the deluxe even though I didn't pick a color. It's cool, the experience was well worth the price and really, that's pretty standard with the other places in and around this area of Oakland. Will I come back ? Probably if in a pinch, but the competition for a good mani-pedi in this area is stiff and people have their favorites, and I still stand as a regular to a place three doors down. Grand Ave is chock full of nail salons and I somewhat randomly selected Nail Today after moving to the neighborhood six months ago. I have been incredibly pleased with the service, attention to detail and niceness of all the women who work there. I am a recovering nail biter (like REALLY bad - like I don't want strangers to see my nails) and have mostly kicked the habit. That said, I still bite my thumbs to the quick and have tried to remedy this by getting semi-regular manicures. The thought is that the expense of the manicure will guilt me into not biting them. Nail Today will give me a regular manicure on my 8 good nails and then perform NAIL MAGIC on my thumbs, all for a very reasonable price. What's more is that they are not judge-y about the horrible state that my thumbs are in - a huge bonus. I really can't thank the women there enough for helping me kick a bad habit and allowing me to have presentable nails in the meantime :-) read more

I went here w/ a gf for a pre-boards "pampering" session today based on all the great reviews on yelp. We made appointments, and was actually worked on immediately. Overall, I had a great experience, but it wasn't anything fabulous to rant & rave about. I could have easily gotten the same treatment at a nail shop closer to home. I must admit, the decor is much better than most nail shops i've been to, w/ a cute choice of colorful paints on the walls w/ some beautiful orchid paintings. The ladies were all very nice, but did not go well out of their way to talk to you. I had the spa french mani/pedi, and as other reviewers mentioned, they are very meticulous about the work that they do. I was in a massage chair the whole time, while they worked on my hands & feet. They used sea salt scrubs on my legs (which i've never had at any other nail shop before), along with a mini hand & feet massage (which i've had better). I paid $31 which is about average of what i usually pay anywhere else (it would've been $25 if it hadn't been for the french-work), plus a $5 tip, in addition to the 15-20 minute worth of gas & drive to get there, oh & don't forget the $1.50 for metered parking. oh, and did i also mention that i can actually understand what they were saying to each other in their native tongue (although they didn't know that), and overheard them talking about how they thought I would actually leave WITHOUT paying? (as i was sitting near the front door waiting for nails to dry under the lamp..and one of them actually got up & closed the front door incase i did actually try to attempt it!! I was a bit offended, but nicely got up, and handed them their nice tip anyways!) If i lived in the area...would i come here again? probably. Great people, great quality, low prices! I just recently moved into the neighborhood, and I was overwhelmed by the sheer volume of nail places within walking distance. Based on reviews here I decided to try Nail Today. What a great choice - I showed up on a weekday a half hour before they closed and they were happy to take me. They spent at least 40 minutes on my mani/pedi and were very detailed throughout the whole process. I got my eyebrows waxed by Lan, and she was just a sweet and friendly as everyone here has said. What a great place - I'm definitely going to going back. One important note - although they do take credit card, make sure to bring cash for your tip; they ran my card and there was nowhere to add it on the receipt. read more

If I could give this place 0 stars I would. I do not have sensitive skin, but after breaking into hives 3 separate times I was able to narrow the cause down to Nail Today. After seeing an allergist and being tested for a battery of allergies I hadn't even considered it could be the place I got my nails done every now and then. I live one street over from Grand and recently moved into the neighborhood. There are tons of nail shops up and down this street that tend to the pampered Piedmont soccer mom crowd. I decided to give this spot a chance based on Yelp reviews. The polish selection is wack - it looks like it belongs in 80s Avon makeup catalogs. I need the newest OPI and Essies! They pretty much ignored me most of the time, and when I was done, they didn't even help me put my sandals on and walk to the drying station (which has no fans, just one big UV light). I had to walk my fresh pedi and polish BAREFOOT over their grimy carpet and no one even offered to bring my stuff over to me when I was done! Plus, it only accepts credit card (no tip on the signature) so when I wasn't able to give them a tip (I'm a great tipper!), I didn't feel so bad. They didn't deserve it. I had an appointment here for a pedicure and shellac manicure on New Year's Eve. I came in when they opened in the morning, and they already had some customers, who apparently are regulars, sitting in their chairs. I also noticed as I sat in my chair that everyone who came through the door was recognized by name. That's always a good sign! I ended up with that deluxe pedicure, for only five dollars more. It was so nice! I never pamper myself this way :-) Then, Tran started my shellac manicure. I could tell she really wanted to take her time. Halfway through, she stopped and told me she didn't like how they were turning out and asked if it was okay if she started over. I told her it was ok, and that I appreciated her commitment to making my nails perfect. Luckily, I had plenty of time. My manicure (and pedicure) turned out beautifully! I spent less than I wouldn't have expected on both, even after upgrading my pedicure. Also a quick note, they take cards for payment, but can only accept tips in cash. But they were nice enough to let me run across the street to Safeway to get cash :-) I will definitely go here again. All the positive reviews were right-on! Good service, reasonable prices (as I post more to Yelp, this theme is sure to emerge--I'm hella miserly), easy to get an appointment. They didn't cut my cuticles (which is a GOOD thing--that practice can lead to infection) and even asked if they needed to feed my meter for me once my nails were wet. And I didn't get any of those passive-aggressive manicurist comments, like "You like your nails short, huh?" (The answer to which is, "No, my nails split and I'm clumsy and I type a lot and I'm still very much a lady, thank you very much.") The massage chairs were kinda ineffective, but I have a bad back and neck, so you basically have to put me in a vat of vibrating goo to make a difference. The only reason this place gets 3 stars is because the ladies did an awesome job on my nails. I had an appointment at 5:15. To be fair, I was 10 minutes late. I was asked to wait a little bit. Several people walked in after me and started their services way before me. It took over an hour for anyone to start my services - they started my gel mani at 6:23. Once she sat down, she began the texting and then took a call while sitting right in front of me.If you are too busy to take an appointment then JUST TELL ME THAT. I would rather not waste hours of my time waiting. A mani pedi should not be a two hour+ experience. I have never had such a long and tiresome experience. So much for relaxing! To top it off, I heard one of the ladies talking shit about how I was late with another customer. It's 10 minutes - LIFE HAPPENS. My favorite nail shop in Oakland. They take their time doing your nails and you aren't rushed. I've been places where they take 15 minutes to do your pedicure. I come here for the long experience of relaxing in the massage chair, getting my feet rub, and talking with Diane and the other friendly staff. I also like that as a man, they can make my nails look shiny without having to put clear polish on them I recommend that you pay the extra couple of bucks and get your feet dipped in the hot wax. read more

I went to see Lan based on a review I read here on Yelp! I was very impressed by our conversation on the telephone and her willingness to accommodate me on short notice. When I arrived (with my 4-year old son in tow) all of the staff were pleasant and worked very hard to put me at ease. I was offered a variety of drink and immediately escorted to a pedicure chair. I chose the deluxe pedicure and was not disappointed. I also tried something new, acrylic nails.... they look very nice and professional. By the way, the decor is stylish and calming. Overall, I was very pleased with the services and staff. I am now a permanent client and have already recommended Nail Today to several people (which is unheard of because I am a formal nail tech, so pleasing me is almost impossible!) These ladies! I'm not sure why they do nails ten times better than any other place I've been (including luxury spas that charge $100 for a pedi), but all the technicians here have mad nail skills. They make my toes and fingers look perfect every single time, and even though my mani takes an hour (versus 20 minutes at other salons nearby), and a pedi might take an hour and fifteen (or longer), I still won't go anywhere else. I guess the time they spend is reflected in the finished product? Occasionally I do wish there could be two people working at the same time to speed things up, but I understand that staffing is a challenge because they are always busy! Also, I've recently learned about the glories of the gel mani, and I'll be damned if those things don't look flawless for 2-3 weeks. Amazing. I had a gel mani at a different (significantly pricier) salon and it started peeling in the second week. So the four stars are for their ridiculously high quality end result. The one star I didn't include just means it's not a luxury experience. But it's my go-to place and I love, love, love it. PS: all the ladies that work here are super nice. I wandered in here shortly after Lan took over. I was the only customer in at the time, so of course I got great attention. Lan was very friendly and asked more about me than some friends I've had for years. But alas, I waited too long between visits and she didn't even remember me. At that point it was okay since I was in for an emergency wax of the girly bits, so anonymity is always appreciated when spreading and bending and whatnot. I had my first experience with the heavy duty green wax and that was ah. . . illuminting. And extremely painful. I really don't know if I DO like it better than the other. We'll see. The point of course being that the manicures are great and the waxes are efficient. And sometimes, if you call before you go, even right before closing time, they'll take you anyway. YAY! read more

I was in dire need of a pedicure so I pulled up the Yelp app on my blackberry and wanted to find a cheap but good place to get it done yet. First of it is hard to find a good park, but don't let the busy traffic drive you away. Now that I got your attention, let me tell you about my experience with Kang. She was very patient with my feet. I felt like I had a massage on a cloud. She was most patient with me. Despite my disgusting appearance on my feet she didn't talk about me. She was kind. She put so much detail into trimming my nails and getting the cuticles I originally a bit tense and now I feel relaxed. She held a nice conversation with me and was very friendly. So I'm afraid I must continue my search for the ultimate Oakland pedicure, the one where not only do my toes look gorgeous and beautifully painted (which I've found), but where the soles of my feet actually look like the pedicurist (ha) has at least touched them! I walked in and they took me within 5 minutes. The place was clean, nice and quiet with mellow music in the background, spacious and bright. The utensils were removed from the package in front of me (yes!). The ladies were nice and quick...too quick for my taste. A 20 minute mani/pedi where you spent 40 seconds scrubbing my feet...ummmm. I get a regular pedi (at least twice a month depending on what I've been up to) plus I work in an office...meaning my feet are not all that gnarly. So why did I leave with "build up" on the soles, paint on the edges of my toenails left over from my previous pedicure and a bad bubbly paint job? The mani was average but today the paint is already peeling (I was there yesterday), luckily i keep them neutral. It would be 1 star for me if it were not for the pretty decent leg massage and salt scrub (yes i do this ion my shower at home but it was a nice touch) and the cleanliness, which is hard to find. I know I'm picky about my pedi but Yelpers I believe you've failed me for the first time...I won't return. read more

I've had a number of manicures and never had one that left me with nails just the right length, cuticles that are stellar, and a good experience all the way around. I made an appointment for us at 6:30 for manicures and we were done in about 45 minutes. Diane did my manicure and I was a little nervous when she was trimming my cuticles for what seemed like an hour but they turned out amazing! The worst part was some lady that called and bitched about the "Open" sign being out when they weren't accepting any more walk-in appointments because of how late it was. I came here to get my eyebrows waxed by Lan. For $7, she did an excellent job at waxing my eyebrows and she listened to how I wanted my eyebrows to be wax. She was careful in making sure my eyebrows weren't too thin because I like my eyebrows to have a natural shape. It wasn't awkward at all because she was talking to me the whole time, because I think it's awkward whenever I get my eyebrows waxed and the other person is quiet. The girls that work there are mean and it is not worth paying double the price when you can just come here for a better wax and customer service! Nails are grossly important to me. I think about them a lot, and if they're not in perfect condition, it bothers me. I moved near Grand Ave a few weeks ago, and was frankly a little overwhelmed by the sheer number of nail salons. There are easily a half-dozen within seven blocks. Yelp told me Nail Today was good, so I went on a Sunday morning. I got in right away, and they were slow enough to have two women doing my mani/pedi simultaneously. They were friendly and attentive, even got up and swapped my polish when I had a mid-pedi change of heart about the color. Here's my issue: I got a shellac manicure and it pooled. There's nothing worse. I can even overlook that the manicurist cut my nail too deep and it bled, but a pooling shellac manicure? Nope. It so hard to fix that by the next week I drove back to my old place and had them redo it. I think Nail Today will do in a pinch for a regular man-pedi, but not as a regular spot. read more

I've been to a thousand nail salons and what's most important to me is a manicure/pedicure that lasts. The shellac lasts longer than 2 weeks, pedicure-3. They're friendly, make sure you're satisfied with their work and do an excellent job. One time I went I got a chip (super tiny) the next day and was disappointed because I didn't want to have to trek all the way over there to get one nail done. So I left it...assuming it would peel and my nail would look crappy in a few days. That chip never moved. I'm telling you...they do great work (and the chip was my own fault). I've paid MUCH more for shellac that barely lasts 3 weeks. Natural Nails charges like $40+ JUST for manicure and it was looking pretty crappy in LESS than 2 weeks. It's about $25 for shellac, and I think $10 for pedicure. You even get the fancy massage chairs which I love. If possible, I will never go anywhere else. read more

I called Polish on Piedmont earlier and they couldn't get me an appointment and would've charged me $52 for the removal of my annoying acrylic nails (got them done for a wedding) and manicure. No thanks! So I decided to drive up Grand Avenue to pick one of the many nail shops to get what I needed done. I blindly picked Nail Today and took a quick look inside. It's clean, with new decor. The manager Lan, said that the shop was renovated last November and turned to new ownership. All the furniture inside is new. Soon after I arrived, a steady stream of regulars came by for mani-pedis. Seems like they have a devoted clientele. The prices are very reasonable - $10 for a manicure, $20 for a deluxe pedicure (I'll have to try it next time). I'm glad I decided not to wait for Polish on Piedmont, because I paid only $18 for what I needed done. I know you have to be careful when choosing a nail salon, but I don't think anyone has to worry here. read more

This isn't really a bad review just an honest one. I'll be quick. I've had better customer service. I've heard staff give great customer service to regulars I just didn't have that same experience. I've gotten an acrylic fill twice there. The first time I have an appointment and I had to wait 45 mins to start. My nails came out nice that time. However, I was cut on my pinky. This time no cuts, but air bubbles and misshaped nails. The nail tech did take her time and seemed to really care about her work.. just won't be returning :( But the shop is generally really busy so I'm sure they won't miss my money. read more

I went here based on the Yelp reviews, and it was great! The massage chair was a great addition to the pedicure I received -- and I would have gone just for the pedicure. They use some great sea salt type crystals to exfoliate IN ADDITION to the lotions and massages and the warm water in the jacuzzi-jet style foot bath. They had a great stash of trashy magazines (my guilty pleasure when I'm getting a pedicure), and were super attentive and really friendly. AND, it was pouring rain when I left, and I had forgotten an umbrella, and the woman who did my pedicure insisted on walking me to my car with her umbrella, even though it was only a block away. I checked NO for "by appointment only"- but you are going to be hard pressed to get a walk-in because this place is always busy! The only reason this place doesn't get five stars is that even when you have an appointment you will wait at least ten minutes before you get to start your treatment. There is good reason to wait, however. The service is so personal- they always remember us, and ask how we're doing. Lan remembers what we talked about last time, she's really got a great memory. Pedicures and manicures are expertly executed, with very reasonable prices, but the waxing service is really what makes Nail Today the place I will come back to again and again. Lan has been so nice to my boyfriend and me as we enter the world of waxing. She was both our firsts (he- Back, me- Brazilian), and she was so kind to both of us. She was especially kind and respectful to me during what I can only describe as an intimate and excruciating experience. Thank you, Lan, for making us both comfortable with your conversation and gentility.
