Background: My mom moved to San Diego from the Bay Area at 84 years old to be near us. She wasn't in the best shape, but the day she got here she needed an oxygen tank. She got pneumonia 4 times and was intubated 4 times, developed edema, and a lot of other stuff affecting her ability to move and her levels of pain. She was taking 14 prescribed pills a day, and visited quite a few specialists regularly. Setsuko was one of the two medical professionals in my mom's life that actually helped her. Someone on here gave her a low score because she took a week to reply, a score that had nothing to do with her skills in acupuncture. When you live with chronic pain, it takes up a lot of space in your life. Until I met Setsuko (Nakamura Acupuncture), I hadn't realized how many ways pain controlled my choices, emotions and relationships. I am a 59 year old heavyset gal who's lived with chronic arthritic knees & back pain for years. I've tried knee braces, heat, ice and lived on pain meds...until now. I came in to Nakamura Acupuncture with muscle spasms and back pain after my HMO sent me home with Flexeril and hopelessness. I had never had this type of treatment before, but I was ready to take a chance on something new when the old way just wasn't working anymore. After my first session I had no more pain or spasms, and haven't needed so much as an aspirin in 3 weeks. I had two sessions with her total and will not hesitate to call her in the future first. I decided to turn to acupuncture after my heart rate dropped to 20 beats per minute in the E.R. They checked me out at the hospital and sent me to a cardiologist. They did all of the tests Blood and EKG test twice with no apparent explanation of why my heart rate dropped so low. Knowing there had to be an explanation I went to see Setsuko. She clearly explained the connection between my heart, kidneys and adrenals. I felt so much better after only seeing her a couple of times. Recently, I've gone back to see her about a strained back. Again after a few treatments I am standing upright. I personally feel like she is a modern day miracle worker. I cant say enough about Nakamura Acupuncture. The pills I was given by my primary care physician and the physical therapy proscribed by the sports medicine doctor had no appreciable affect on my arthritis of the knees. And was told that there was nothing they could do for what they described as minor arthritis of the hand which interfered with almost everything I did. After my first visit, my hand was almost pain free, and The pain in my knees and calves was much better.. I went in today,with pretty swollen feet, and within the therapy session the swelling was reduced enough that my sandals didn't make marks when i took them off. It is working. My pain is much less and my ability to do things is returning to normal. There are a lot of acupuncturist out there, but She is knowledgable, and explains what she is doing in terms which are understandable...the bottom line is I would recommend her to anyone. FIVE stars are simply not enough. I had reached the end of the line after struggling with chronic neck pain for over 45 years. After medical doctors tried steroid injections, cervical nerve ablation and epidural I was told there wasn't much more that could be done to help control what became constant and more intense pain. A friend of mine referred me to Setsuko Nakamura and this has been a blessing. I thought I was condemned to hopeless suffering with terrible pain for the rest of my life. On my first visit with Setsuko, she restored my sense of hope and reassured me that her treatments can definitely help my condition. I used to have chronic knee problems and knee pain. Part of it was due to my weight and part of it was due to previous sports injuries and believing that I was impervious when I was younger. It was debilitating (not only physically but emotionally) as I enjoyed being active and I would always "play through" the pain or when it was bad enough would sideline me completely. I met Setsuko when she was actually still interning which was not at all believable as she conducted and carried herself as someone who had been in practice for many years. I want to note that by the time I saw Setsuko I had been suffering through severe pain for 6 months and taking all sorts of pain medications and anti-inflammatory drugs. I had also seen a few other licensed acupuncturists who were suppose to be her seniors with no relief of any kind. I had about given up when I decided to take one last shot at it. After just a few treatments from her my knee started feeling and getting better! And not only better but stronger! After a handful more treatments BOTH my knees felt like they were brand new. I never knew that it would be possible...SHE made it possible. Since then she has been able to help me with my diabetes, my weight, other ortho related issues, and a myriad of other health needs. Admittedly I haven't had to have an appointment with her for a long time now but that's a result of her not only addressing my health issues and concerns but also empowering and teaching me how to maintain optimal health on my own. I sprained my ankle pretty bad while running and called around to five different acupuncturists in the area to get some relief. The other four I contacted called me back within 1-3 hours and were gracious, kind and caring. This lady took six days and left a voicemail saying she was soooooo busy that she couldn't even get to a phone. For almost a week? Really? Her apology sounded insincere at best and her excuse was a little ridiculous given how much time had passed. The four other practitioners I called have far more experience than she does and a larger clientele (so therefore are busy as well, if not busier) and the max time it took for any of them to return my call was three hours. Setsuko is unprofessional and inconsiderate. And her phony and immature sounding apology a week later was insulting after the fact. Thankfully I was seen that same day by a true healer and professional that not only gave me immediate pain relief but enabled me to run again just a few days later. If you're looking for a caring, mature professional, look elsewhere. She is not it. read more
