I cannot say enough about the kindness, compassion, and care we received from Nakamura Mortuary during an incredibly difficult time for our family. From the moment we needed their help, they treated Mark and our family with such dignity, respect, and genuine compassion. They made a very painful and difficult process a little easier, and knowing that Mark was being cared for with such respect meant more to us than I can express. Communication is really bad. Called them about a services for someone and they never called me back.

First thing that could improve is some communication. It has been about a month since my Father's passing Mick McGrew aka "Fish" he is known for his beautiful work with palm leaves. He did flower bouquets and spread love through handing out fishes for free to the children. He loved bringing joy into people's hearts. My heart is aching that I do not even know what is happening or has happened to my Father's body. My Sister and I have both tried emailing, calling and are not receiving any communication back. Unfortunately we are on the Mainland as the Maui fires and Covid has prevented me from moving back. Some lady name Chasity was helping my sister originally but went on some medical leave which is understandable , but there was no voicemail saying she is absent or communication to transfer information to handle my Father's body and allow is his remains or ashes to be picked up. I don't even know what's going on with his remains. I have no closure and fear he will be tossed out like rubbish(ōpala) I would think they would want to handle this quickly and efficiently as possible. My last resort is writing this hoping no one else has to feel this pain and experience. I pray that there are better places to have our loved ones remains handled properly with dignity and care where is the Aloha?! This is not the Maui I grew up in. Do not let the fire burn out Áina. Unfortunately, my mom passed away, and the funeral services were purchased with Nakamura Mortuary. I wanted to make a slideshow, so I called and left a message for Kelsey to call me back. It's been 2 days so I emailed them for someone to contact me it's been one day and no one has contacted me only an email that says we will get back to you as soon as we can. Still nothing, so I emailed for the second time. How can these people say, "We are here for you" on their website when try aren't? I don't get it. No compassion. read more

Death. When that happens on Maui, you have the choice of two funeral "homes": Nakamura's or Ballard's/Borthwick. I personally recommend going with Nakamura's as we had an absolutely inexcusable, horrible experience with Ballard's when my dad passed away (see my Yelp review). FUNERAL PLAN: Now that my spouse and I are middle-aged, it was time to start paying for our funeral and boneyard plans. We met with a friendly gal by the name of Nicole at Maui Memorial Park who helped us set up our plan and made sure we had arrangements strictly with Nakamura's and not awful Ballard's. We went through all the steps and made monthly payments. FUNERAL "HOME": Only in Hawaii do you have mortuaries and not traditional funeral homes like you find in the mainland US. While I can't comment on planning a service here, I can give my perspective as a grieving guest. If you're a non-religious family, this place is perfect as you can bring in anyone you want as far as leading the service. Parking can be a problem especially if you have a large family or if the deceased person was well known. There a few stalls on the lawn adjacent to the building and some in the back. It looks horrible with all the cars parked right out front but what are you supposed to do? There are unofficial street stalls along Lower Main Street but park at your own risk with Maui's terrifying driver skills. A small reception area greets you upon entering, good enough for a small 2-person table to collect cards. The main viewing room has a church-like setup with rows of pews split into three sections. Lighting is bright and not very ambient but the acoustics are good. Numerous split a/c units kept the room cool. Another popular local tradition is to feed your guests after the service. They have a small room with communal tables towards the back of the facility. Local catering companies do this all the time so set up/breakdown is usually a breeze for them. OVERALL: Trust me, go with Nakamura's for you or your loved one's home-going ceremony. read more

Amazing mortuary to work with and an amazing team! Charisse helped my family and I from the moment we contacted them. It was such a smooth and easy planning during such a hard time and she made sure every need and want was met for the family! They took their time with explaining our options and understanding how everything would work. The day of the services Charisse was helpful and making sure everything was perfect! The services was amazing and everything we knew our loved one would've wanted. Never in my life had I ever sought of even planning a funeral; especially when that last day of remembrance becomes the last day/ hours of your very own parents. In my case I'm implying to my one & only DAD..! My brothers and I will continuously like to thank Raji Gaskin, Tracy Dennis, Teal Lopez and everyone else on the Nakamura team personally for everything that they have done through our difficult time of our fathers passing. Communication, support, implementation etc; played a huge contribution of my dads overall service which made January 28, 2023 a memorable last day. Seeing him lay there so comfortably made me seek a bit a peace knowing Raji did an incredible job as if he was "still here with us". Chance Brown & Trina DeCoite were our funeral arranger and Family Service Advisor. They were both very compassionate and very helpful during our family's loss. Chance always answered all my questions in a timely manner and helped arrange my Father's veterans honor for his service and took care of all our needs. They were also very accommodating and helpful with one very special request we had. There were however a couple of things that did not go so well. During the funeral service Carrie told us she had no idea what was going on and had not gone over our program which resulted in her trying to go over with us what was happening right before we needed to start. I felt she should have been more prepared and gone over everything prior so things would have gone a little smoother and where she would not have taken me away from my moments with my family. Also, Nakamura's helped ordered my Father's Death Certificates for me. It took a little over a month for them to get them to me. I ended up calling the Dept. of Health on my own and found out that they had mailed it on 4/7/22. I figure it would take 4-5 days to reach Nakamura's. When I found out when it was mailed I called Nakamura's and told them what I found out and asked if they could please check because I was waiting a long time for the DC. They checked and did find it was there, but why did no one call me - who knows. Overall I still would recommend using Nakamura Mortuary because they were helpful, compassionate and professional. They did do a good job in the pre-planning and hopefully the directors can improve for the day of celebration and be better prepared for the next family. Deanne N. read more

The last experience you have with your loved one is with the mortuary. This is the experience you are paying them for, the final farewell. Can you imagine attending service for your loved one, only to have them displayed on a TABLE? Then to have them wheeled away in the middle of the service because an inquiry was made? Only to have your loved one wheeled back out in the same night gown they passed away in... not in the clothes or accessory that was brought down to the mortuary earlier for the viewing service. It was a very traumatizing experience that you can never get back. This is the forever lasting memory the mortuary presented to us. The can applologize and learn from this experience but its never something you can get back.... its never the words that were said, you will forever remember how it made you feel. read more

Satisfactory. Funeral service went through ok; hence the generous 3 stars. Very frustrating experiences leading up to and after the date. Took two phone calls to settle final bill, not to mention some back and forth between departments. Also basic customer service frustration. Was told to expect a call back very shortly. Did not get a call back. Called 1 hour later to confirm that I left the right number. I did. Was told that the person would call back as soon as possible. I called back 5 hours later and the person whom I was waiting to receive a call back from answered the phone. Was told that they were waiting for an appropriate time to call me back (whatever that means). I get the impression that they are short staffed. Very frustrating. read more

Seemed like nice people at first, big problems following through on their promises. Told remains would be ready in 1-2 days, took about 3 weeks. When I called to find out if they were done, the person who answered the phone said " You mean no one called you?" Apparently they were done and sitting for nearly 3 weeks and no one called. Took 3 weeks and 3 phone calls to get the obituary from them, and then it wasn't what we talked about. Guy who came to pick him up when he died was wearing a suit. That was just weird. My first impression was very positive, long term impression is not again. We didn't need more stress having them not do what they told us when they told us they would do it. read more

Very early on a Sunday morning, our phone call was answered - and so were all our questions. Meghan brought calm and clarity to a time when we needed it. She was helpful during the call, and our follow-up meeting the next day. We came to the meeting prepared to buffer attempts at "up-selling" in our time of grief, but we didn't need to! She listened to our requests, and delivered as promised. They notified us by phone when ashes could be picked up, and when death certificates had arrived. The place gives me the creeps just walking in. I asked to meet to get prices. I just felt rushed, and they kept on saying we are cheaper, but after getting all the prices they were not. The charge for every little thing, not even trying to hear me in saying, what if I don't want this, or that, is it cheaper, but the response was no you have to. WHAT? I'm just looking for a place that will take care if me and care for me without adding more things and my kids will have to pay. I couldn't stay long, dark, scarey. I like Norman's Mortuary or Ballards because it's beautiful. The service is better, sorry. Don't go there, I think they need to bless that place. Ugh. read more

We live on the mainland and they made the process as comfortable and manageable from 3000 miles away. They answered all our questions and put us at ease. Astonishing that these people are in business. Simple as that. But, they have perfected the art of being arrogant even while acting empathetic, so that is something outstanding, at least, even if not something to be proud of. In particular, regarding "E", I've never before spoken to anyone able to sugar-coat her condescension in such a nauseating and thus deeply offensive way. When, after weeks of waiting, I dared to ask about the status of the ashes, her schoolmarm-style reply " Oh, they were already picked up by on such-and-such a date by so-and-so" hit me with the full force of self-righteous authority and left me completely speechless. When I managed a "You are kidding, right?", there was a brief silence and, a few seconds later, "Oh, never mind, I have his ashes right here, right here"....left me at a loss for words and wondering if I had perhaps stumbled into some Twilight Zone script by mistake. Or into some satire-sitcom where someone was lampooning the worst a funeral home could possibly serve up. (After all, at the outset, she had confirmed to me that I was the person designated to pick up the ashes when they were ready). On an earlier another occasion, she stridently scolded me for failing to appear for a meeting we supposedly had agreed to have - trouble was, I was never informed of such, in fact, I had been waiting for that meeting date/time to be set for some time. When I pointed this out, she was quickly on to the next subject, leaving me to wonder if she was, perhaps, made of teflon. (We never met in person, so I can't be sure, but she probably would do well in politics). The series of inconsistencies and bald-faced lies (they never did get the cremation date right with us) had us wonder if they were perhaps deliberately stalling on the cremation so as to run up cold storage charges on the body? (We were at a loss to explain it in any other way, sorry to say). There was little transparency, much of the information that was given was useless as to procedure/timing, and the person designated to pick up the ashes was never notified as agreed. We had to make that phone call ourselves to find out. When I went to perform that unhappy task, I was asked to sign some paperwork that was (I kid you not) illegible - the print job of the forms, much of it small print to begin with, was that lousy. This all transpired in a busy hallway, there was not even a pretense of a private office environment or any such care... I'll stop there. I will gladly give credit where it is due - the two men who picked up my beloved friend's body on that fateful day were exceedingly gentle, polite and respectful to the nines - totally out-of-character with all subsequent staff interactions. We recently suffered the loss of our Beloved Grandma who achieved the wonderful age of 101 yrs old. I was surprised to find out that years ago, a family member had pre purchased her funeral plan and that it was paid in full. From the moment that we contacted Nakamura Funeral Home to set up our meeting, Meagan (Our Funeral Director) agreed to meet with the family, three days later. Meagan took charge of every detail and was the sweetest, easiest and most professional person to work with. She was very receptive to all and answered everyone's question's, putting everyone at ease. Rather than utilizing Nakamura's Chapel and facilities, we opted to Celebrate Grandma's life at the family Church. Seven days later, we laid Grandma to Rest with Meagan in full charge of every detail. She was there with us from start to finish and made it a point to get to know my family.This young Woman has a Dynamic Personality, a Big Heart and a great sense of humor when appropriate. She blended in perfectly with our family and friends and we now consider her as a member of our extended family.
