This is a very unique place to say the least. This is the bar you go to after two other bars where you don't want to go home just yet. I guess people go there after they are already drunk. They have a cover on Friday and Saturday nights, but it's still extremely crowded. It's pretty dead on weekdays, and that's exactly why I was willing to come inside here yesterday. They were actually well decorated for Halloween, and people were playing pool. Very hard to play on weekends tho. I've had a few drinks here. They are actually fairly decent. The Long Island ice tea is good! And I will close this review with saying there is all kinds of suspicious activity on the dance floor. You have been warned. read more

Horrible place serving fake Alcohol. They definitely refill their bottles with cheap booze. I am a drinker, yet when I left this place, I could not walk. The alcohol made my partner vomit because it was so cheap, and then these goons kicked him out after we paid 240 to get in. Nana Funks was the venue for an annual Do Dah Day event [maybe Do Dah Night or Do Dah Eve] for several years. It was the location where folks met, bought tickets for raffle prizes and various "give aways" that benefitted Birmingham/Jefferson County animal shelters, and drank and visited. These events were always fairly early in the evening like 6-9 PM so I cannot speak to the after-hours/early mornings at Nana's. It was a fine venue to have a drink and support Do Dah Day. read more

Homophobic/discriminatory establishment, Wouldn't allow my male friend to carry a purse in. Very rude and didn't tell us until after we paid. Made us get out of line and would not allow us inside all while smirking stating "it's the rules" but wouldn't show said rules. I just moved to Alabama from New York City and I decided to stop by Nana funks this past Friday night. There was two people you had a pass before going into the place one to check your ID and one to collect a cover fee So by mistake not knowing their was another Guy collecting the entrance fee I walked passed him by mistake. He decided it was OK to grab my arm and pull me closer to his lil kiosk and say I cannot just walk in. I told him I'm not from Alabama and I'm from New York so I clearly didn't know and to get the fuck off me and don't fucking touch me again. I am from NYC this is not how we roll. I'm a lady. I just moved to the HAM from Portland!! I was feeling a bit lost in the deep south, but I found refuge in Nana Funks. I was intrigued to enter because of the leg lamp in the display window and because I initially believed the sign read Nana Freaks [(if you know what I mean :*)] . To my surprise, NF supplied me with that little known thing called southern hospitality... its real!! Everything is amazing here. Great vibes, good music, quick drinks. Bartenders were attentive, and fast.

So, I came in here with a friend for a break from the heat during Slicefest. They were virtually empty, but from what I understand this is the place to go late at night if you're in the area. Grabbed a couple beers (local brewery favorites to compliment traditional big brand offerings). Pool tables were open, so we were able to play without getting change. Had a good time escaping the heat. I can see how this place would have an overall good vibe on a weekend night. Will come back and check them out again. read more

So... I hate that this is my first review of 2018, but I definitely like I needed to write it. For New Years Eve, my wife and I went out with coworkers and friends. We went to Nana Funks as our after hours shot to continue having fun. Well, first off- the "gatekeepers"of the door, security, bouncers, whatever they want to be called... OMG, they had such attitudes, rude, just ugh. Very short and ugly with the way they spoke to CERTAIN people. I ignored it, and we went in. The crowd was cool I guess, a mixed but predominantly white crowd which I have NEVER had a problem with because I get along with any and everyone. And you will see why I mention the particular diversity in a minute. So, we go to the back bar and are hanging out. We wait at the bar to order drinks, and once the "bartender" did come to us, he took our order, brought our drinks and told us the total. Now THIS is where it went really ugly to me. As we were talking and getting out money to pay, the "bartender"tools his eyes, and grabs my drink and puts it back behind the bar! I said "excuse me? My drink? " He then proceeds to say "I SAID NINE DOLLARS! " Now... Mind you, there were white patrons in there that gad not paid yet For ANY of the shots they took, yet he left then alone until THEY WERE READY TO PAY HIM! But my group on the other hand, he was so ugly and nasty to! Then when my friends were just sitting and talking near the end of the night, they were rude and basically were told if you they weren't spending, you needed to go! But yet, our lighter counterparts weren't spending ANYTHING and were never bothered! Now I did not appreciate ANY of that, and NANA FUNKS will NEVER have to worry about my "wrong color" skinned behind coming back! read more

Nana Funk's isn't the first place you go...or the second...or even third. In fact, it's usually the last place anybody ends up on a Friday or Saturday night. They are open a lot later than the other bars in the area, otherwise I'm not sure anyone would go there at all. It's kind of divided into three sections: the front being a bar with tables, chairs, etc. The middle has a dance floor with a DJ platform and the back has some pool tables. It's loud, dark and sort of uninspired. Just your typical dance club. For a place called Nana FUNK'S, I thought maybe they'd play some funk music. But no, just rap. So you stumble over after last call at Innisfree and expect to just walk on into Nana Funk's, right? Nope, you have to fill out a "temporary membership card". I was told the point of this once, but have forgotten. No other bar in town does this. It's a real buzz kill. The only thing Nana Funk's really has going for them is their late (or I suppose you could say early) hours. read more

im from california, and i didnt think that there was ANYTHING to do in alabama. I thought there would only be churches and grass. I had a good time here. I got here at like 3am! which is pretty late, since most places in CA close at 2am. Good music, alot of people dancing, full bar. There was a variety of ages here from 21-50. I didnt have a problem with it, the more the merrier. Surprisingly diverse! i thought that i would be the only asian in there! o Great crowd. Whoever the guy with the long beard at the front checking id's clearly racially profiled me lastnight. Was not let in because of the sagging rule. Ok I do admit that my pants were a little low but he never pointed out the rules until afterwards....we haven't even gotten in the door yet. I can see if we were inside the club but we never made it that far smfh!! And when another guy (African American) guy walks up to enter he allows him to pull his pants up and enter the establishment. And when me a my friends confronted him about it he says "that guy comes in here every weekend. This is one my favorite places in the entire world!!! Friday nights are fun and the place gets busy with the badest DJs in town; however this place stays open after 2am on Saturdays when all the other bars close and it's hard to not find what you're looking for lol!!! Grade A+ read more

On March 12, 2012 My husband, I, and two other people were racially discriminated against and put out of this club. It is 2012. I understand the right that every owner has to refuse service, but I also understand civil rights. I suggest that African Americans do not attend this club. We were embarrassed in front of our co-workers and friends. We were not allowed a refund. We were not out of dress code.. Basically, we were the only blacks in the club that night. Fun place ... I think .... It's the after party bar apparently ... The line to get in almost makes you say "no Thankyou" and head home .... Don't leave your card EVER! been calling for two days and not a soul to tell me whether it's even there or not really annoying ... I've worked in bars and clubs for a long time and there's always someone there , cleaning, stocking , making orders or doing paper work on the closed days... Someone there to help the patrons that accidentally left their tabs open .... Anyways rant over .... My opinion of this place cool in the moment Update: they are closed Sunday and Monday so if you leave your card say bye to it for two days ... Around the corner and down the street Nana Funk's is a great place to stop for an afternoon cocktail and chill. If 80's dance music is more your style then come to Nana's Thursday - Saturday nights and it is a full on party! Super cool bartenders and the decor is perfection. read more

I was in a bar crawl and Nana Funks was the last bar that our group went to. We were here from 7pm till midnight on a Friday and there was only about 15 people in the place and it was really slow. I left around midnight because I was getting very sleepy but I was to tired to drive so I took a nap in my car till about 3 am and when I woke up this place was swarming with about 150+ college age people. The place was so packed that the crowd spilled out into the sidewalk and surrounded the building. My car was parked just outside Nana Funks and there were people both in front and behind my car. Since I was blocked in I decided to wait a few minutes till the crowd behind my car left so I could back out safely. After about 15 minutes I could tell that the crowd wasn't going anywhere so I decided to back out slowly and let the crowd get out of the way. Nana Funks is an after hours bar and this is where people come after all the other bars close. read more

This place was horrible the manager (who is a off duty police ) very rude very racist !! He also would not let any black or Spanish people in and blamed it on dress code and when confronted about the dress code which was on the door he would not answer any questions ! Very rude ! Lived next to this place for two years. Early morning spot for partying after everyone rolls out of their favorite watering hole. Very little matters at that point. Bartenders do their due diligence and provide quick service. Restroom is suprisingly clean all things considered. Fair deals and cover considering the mass of humanity catered to. My fiancé (black man)and my other two friends (white friends) went there this past Saturday (which wasn't our first time)and they would not let my fiancé in because said his pants where sagging, which they weren't . Then my fiancé pulled his pants up (along with his belt) to satisfy them n they would not allow him into the club. They were also very disrespectful and after questioning them about the situation of not letting him in,their exact words was "nigga I know u understand English" after calling the owner of the club and leaving a voicemail, we as of right now haven't heard anything else from them. My customer experience at this location was ABSOLUTELY terrible! The security guard told my cousin he couldn't get in bc he had on sweatpants so we went home to change.. he Gave us a paper to fill out and once we got to the front (after 30 mins) the next security guard wouldn't let him in but he wouldn't tell us why.. so we asked the other security guard and he said he didn't know! I was denied entry here based on the waistband of my underwear showing when security lifted my shirt. I never knew the dress code included my Undergarments under my clothes. No part of my underwear was showing with my shirt on. It was my wife's birthday night. I am extremely upset with how I was treated based on my appearance alone, with no warning or opportunity to rectify it. My group and I decided to go to Nana Funks for our birthday. (This was my second time TRYING to go in) Well, we get there and all pay our fees of $10 to get in. After 30 minutes, they guy who let us in comes to a male in our group and says he needed to leave because he didn't have a belt!! Sooo, we go get him a belt and we were denied entry and they refused to refund any of our money for the door charge. This place was HORRIBLE & I can assure you we will never go back. They will ask you to leave without giving a reason because they are a "private club" but I would NOT recommend!! read more

Just stumbled on the club one night and it was okay. Not much to say about it. Will I go again...I don't know. I might or might not.

If there were a lower possible review I would give it. I have visited three out of the seven continents and I have never experienced such racism. My guy friend and I spent tons of money in this establishment and to be treated the way they did us I'm still hurt and in disbelief. This club is of a mixed predominantly white crowd. Mind you my guy friend is a graduate of U of A(University of Alabama at Tuscaloosa) and I'm a HBCU (Miles college) student. We both work for the USA government(Social Security and US postal service). We were minding our own business(not disturbing or bothering anyone) enjoying ourselves when we were racially profiled and picked out of a club full of people dressed casual the same way we were. My friend wore a shirt, jeans, and sneakers whereas others (even girls) wore the same. Some people were even dressed in overalls and steel toe work boots. An unruly white male officer approached us and told us to "head to the front of the club and leave at the owners request" because my friend(who doesn't sag) was "out of dress code and sagging". We tried to talk to the officer and fix the "problem" but the officer was so rude and wouldn't even talk to us. Honestly I'm so sad because I've never experienced racism first hand in this way. To be doing nothing wrong but hated anyway. It's not a good feeling. The patrons aren't the problem it's the racist establishment. I will never in my life give this business another dime of my hard earned money and I hope this place gets shut down. read more

Total logistical nightmare. The place was full some twenty-somethings way beyond the legal limit. The staff wasn't friendly and nearly impossible to get a drink. This place is a total hook up spot for kids that couldn't close the deal elsewhere. If that is your thing then this place is for you. For the normal patron, stay away. read more

We went during happy hour and they had wells for around $3. I got a cranberry and vodka, which wasn't anything special, but it tasted good and was a good deal. I've been here several times and I know the dress code shorts can't be too long or pants. You can't be sagging. But the fact that y'all allow your door guys to decide whether they let someone in or not just because they're in a bad mood is messed up. I literally know what to wear when I go there so I wore some short cargo shorts and he didn't even give me a chance. Shorts were at my knee. I have a lot of black and Hispanic friends that complain about this place discriminating against some people. That's not a good look. Tell your door guy if a person looks respectable to let him in. The Birmingham cop and manager at this place are unbelievable. There was fresh blood on the floor where people were dancing and we asked them to look into what happened and they looked at the blood on the floor and laughed and said, its just the lighting. I then continued to the bar and told another person that works there that there was fresh blood on the floor and she continued to tell me a lot of the time it was just the lighting. I told her that we just watched a guy run to the bathroom with a bleeding hand after we just saw him break a glass. The most unbelievable experience i have ever paid to be a part of. The worst part is that the Birmingham police laughed at the fact that there was a pool of blood on the floor, and he and the manager proceeded to laugh at us for reporting it since it was part of the lighting. read more

When I was a little girl and wanted to stay out late my parents would tell me that I had no business being out past midnight because nothing good ever happens after midnight. Every time I go to Nana Funks, I think about that warning. I absolutely love this place. Yes, it's usually packed, there's people there that should have went home hours ago and sometimes bar brawls but it's just so fun! Because it stays open until 7AM most patrons don't come in until after the other bars in Lakeview close. We tend to get there a bit earlier so we can play some pool and prepare ourselves for the rough but fun night ahead. The DJ plays mostly old school which is a nice change from what everyone else has going on. There's two bars, a large one as you walk in the front door and then a smaller one all the way at the back. The bartenders are just so nice, especially considering the drunk and unruly patrons they have to deal with. Always remember to tip them and tip them well! They more than deserve it. They tend to have nice little events around the holidays as well, which is great. One of the first time's I went to Nana Funks was for Valentine's Day before I even moved to Birmingham. The place was decked out with hearts, feather boas and condoms. It was so funny and had such a good vibe! This club gets a bad rep but it'll treat you as good as you treat it.
