It's a small store, but has a ton of yarn that the big box stores don't normally carry... All weights and all fibers. Nancy is very knowledgeable about fibers, and will help you find what you need. Over the Christmas holidays, I ran out of yarn to make some Christmas baubles for my family- and the gift exchange was in two days. I needed a two particular colors of sport/dk weight yarn. I called on a Monday morning, not realizing they were normally closed on that day. Nancy was there stocking yarn. Once I told her my story, she graciously let me swing by to pick up two hanks of yarn. I am always happy to support my local yarn shop and will be Nancy's customer for life! read more

I have become a loyal shopper b/c I made a connection with the owner on my first visit to her store. She has reasonable pricing and is full of knowledge. The only place in Houston I go for yarn - it's like walking into Aladdin's cave. Step in and to your right is a big, inviting work table and a large bookcase of books, but just beyond, the shop is a texture and color dream-dive. Nancy has everything. I picked up a baby alpaca skein and a möbius knit pattern. The quality of the yarn is wonderful and I had all the advice I needed to succeed w my project. read more

I really wanted to check this place out but unfortunately the only time I was able to get away was on the 4th but apparently they were closed for the holiday. However there were no signs on the door except for one saying they didn't have any cash cause robbers too it. I stopped at Nancy's while visiting Houston - there are very few yarn shops in my neck of the woods (La.) and this was only one I could locate in Houston on Monday. I was looking for guidance selecting a yarn and pattern to make a baby blanket for my first grandchild. I told Nancy that I was an experienced crocheter and knitter with ability to read a pattern. She was neither helpful nor friendly. The shop has a lot of inventory that is piled high, even yarn stacked on floor in some areas. Some guidance or interest from the owner would have made me an instant fan. However, she was borderline rude and her tone was arrogant and unconcerned. I will not return here. And even though I did ultimately choose to buy some yarn, I kind of regret it. And she worked hard to upsell me to purchase additional skeins- hoping I have not been steered in the wrong direction here. read more

You'd never know Nancy's Knits was tucked into this generally shabby Meyerland plaza if you were just driving by. There's a Walgreens, neighborhood favorite Chinese restaurant Hunan Hut, a used bookstore, and next to the Hunan Hut without even an overhead sign, is this adorable yarn shop. I wandered in and was immediately delighted to be amidst a jungle of yarn- a winding maze of bins stacked higher than my head (and I'm 5'9"). I was greeted warmly by Nancy herself, and when I explained to her that I was looking for 'super chunky' yarn she showed me everything in the store that fit the bill. I did a walk around to see if she'd missed anything and nope, she knows her store- all the more impressive because she manages to fit more yarn in it than do many stores twice the size. (Bring in your pattern and she'll help you choose the exact perfect yarn. Good for 'not beginner but still lousy knitter' types like me.) I also nabbed some new recycled wood knitting needles in here- Nancy helped me choose the brand as well, and I drooled over some Vietnamese wooden needles and cube! needles. There are lots of cool knitting accessories in here to gaze at after you've picked your yarn. Nancy also offers knitting classes on Monday nights, and I imagine they're really pleasant because of her calm, reassuring demeanor. She immediately put me at ease. There are so many hipster-staffed knitting shops out there now, but this is a classic knitting shop without sacrificing anything from the hip shop selection. Remember, no sign, but once you see the Walgreens and the Mailboxes Etc in this plaza, you're in the right place. What's more, you can take your knitting to the complex next door and sit in the Fioza coffee shop- a lot of people do. read more

About a year ago my doctor got into knitting, I'm not sure how we started talking about it, but we did and she mentioned that Nancy's Knits was the place that she went and had found a really great pattern for a sweater that was all boxes. I knit, but badly, and I'm terrified of anything that isn't a square, or a rectangle. So the idea of making an entire sweater out of rectangles was intriguing. The one time I went to the store unfortunately Nancy wasn't in and the woman behind the counter wasn't familiar with the particular pattern I was searching for. There IS a lot of yarn inside, and plenty of cute knitting accessories. I've been behind in my knitting, but when I catch up I definitely plan on returning. The shop is hard to find if you don't know what you are looking for. It has a sign on the shop, but not above it, and it's kind of tucked in a hard to see spot. read more

Nancy was super nice to me when I came in. I was looking for Cascade 220, which she unfortunately didn't carry, but she tried to help me find a similar yarn. The store is stuffed with yarn from floor to ceiling, but she guided me to what I was trying to look for. She had a great selection of yarns from what I could see, and the prices didn't seem particularly outrageous from any other yarn shop. I ended up buying a small packet of wool wash. Not exactly a big profit from me, but she was still super friendly! I wasn't able to find the exact yarn I needed this time, but when I need yarn for my next project, I will be back! read more

I visited Nancy's Knits for the first time on my way home from work. When I walked in, there were three women sitting at the table right by the front door, they were chatting and eating dinner. They paused, smiled at me and said "hello," while I looked at the front display. After a minute or two, the owner (Nancy) asked if she could help me, or if I was looking for anything specific. Since I was just in a browsing mood, I told her that, but let her know I wouldn't be shy if I had questions. I found this to be a completely pleasant and appropriate interaction, although nobody stood up to greet me. I'm ok with informal interactions! (Later I saw that Nancy was limping as she walked.) I did find the shop to be cramped. There's not a whole lot of square footage in the store, but there are a LOT of shelves, full of yarn. There were also some boxes with yarn on the floor. I ended up making several detours around the shelves to avoid boxes - since I'm a klutz, I'd have broken something - probably myself - if I'd tried to hop over or squeeze past.) There were a lot of brands available, including some high end stuff that cost more than $50 for a 50g skein, and some of the more obscure brands that I like. There was also Debbie Bliss, Plymouth's Galloway, and much more. However, I didn't see any Cascade (though I may have missed it), very little Rowan and no Brown Sheep - which are brands I've come to know pretty well and think of as "staples" in my dependable, go-to yarns for nice, but not luxury knitting. I bought some yarn to finish a baby blanket I'm working on. It was an inexpensive synthetic blend (for ease of care), but nice colors and a nice hand feel. There was a decent selection of synthetics in the back corner. As I was getting ready to head up to the register, I saw a sale bin, and was excited to find an unopened 10-skein bag of brushed mohair (& wool blend) yarn marked down to $3 a skein. So, I now have enough tan mohair to knit an oversized shawl or sweater - for $30. While I was shopping, Nancy walked back to see if she could help me. She pointed out the superwash wool that I hadn't spotted, and asked some questons about my current projects. The other women - who seemed to be friends, not shop employees, were both friendly too. They stopped and chatted with me for a minute, but I was mostly left to browse on my own. When it came time to check out, I asked Nancy about her favorite interchangeable circular needle set. She was knowledgeable, happy to describe the products, opened several boxes to show me the needles, and finally advised "But before you commit to a set, it's a good idea to try out a pair. I sell all of these styles individually too." (Hooray, that's great advice, the sets I was looking at were well over $100 - an individual circular is under $20.) I'll be back, but I probably won't ever bring my husband - he doesn't appreciate overflowing storage, and I think this shop would remind him that I'm running out of space for more yarn in my craft area! read more

I visited Nancy's Knits on a Saturday with 2 friends who are also knitters. Nancy was alone in the store, knitting. She greeted us warmly and inquired if we needed help finding anything specific. We asked to just browse and she let us. The store is small. There is a HUGE selection of yarn and not everything is priced. However, Nancy is knowledgeable about what is there, the location and the prices. It was obvious that she has a handicap and possibly cannot climb the ladder easily to store the yarn. However, the yarn is stored on shelves while some is in bags and boxes on the floor in the vicinity of similar yarns. When I asked Nancy for suggestions of lace weight yarns, she gave me 3 suggestions and presented details on why each yarn would be a certain advantage over others. My friend asked about a particular pattern in which she was having difficulty. Nancy asked her to email the pattern to her and she would decipher the pattern - even though the resounding reviews on Ravelry stated that the pattern was "almost impossible" to figure out. When that same friend asked about a pattern for a sweater she saw in the shop, Nancy went straight to the website, downloaded it and sold it to her. Nancy's knowledge about knitting, patterns and techniques is excellent. We also bought circular needles for knitting socks, tiny crochet tools for correcting mistakes, and lots of yarn. When I travel to Houston again to visit I will definitely visit Nancy's Knits (and I live in a place where there are 11 yarn stores in close proximity to my home!) This shop has yarn that you won't find at the craft stores. There are luxurious yarns, fun crazy yarns, lovely baby yarns and beautiful colorways that are stunning. I can overlook a little dust and items in the aisles to find out-of-the ordinary great yarn finds and a proprietor who is knowledgeable and helpful, not pushy. read more

Looking for a yarn that you can't find at your LYS because it's not currently being gushed over by the most popular knitting magazine? Then Nancy's is definitely the place to go. This shop is more traditional and doesn't completely follow the current LYS fad. It can be a bit disorganized sometimes, especially when they receive a shipment, but you will have a higher probability of finding your yarn here than many other LYS. And for some of us, that is the point of knitting... making something with a yarn we like, not hanging out, chatting, and looking like we are into the next cool hobby! So if you find yourself typically having to order yarn online and then annoyed when what you get color-wise isn't exactly what you expected, then stop by Nancy's. I can't say she will definitely have it, but the probability is definitely higher here than just about every other yarn store in the Houston area. read more

Nancy has a good yarn selection, but the store is completely out of control. There are bags of yarn on the floor in every aisle, making it extremely difficult to get to much of the stock. And little of what I looked at was priced. She needs a volunteer team of well meaning knitters to help her get and keep the store organized. (Will organize for at-cost yarn!) I will go back because it's the closest yarn store to me with a good selection. And I covet the huge, beautiful $45 hanks of organic cotton near the front window! read more

This store has a fantastic range of yarn and some have swatches attached so you can feel the knitted fabric. It's a super idea. Space is an issue. Shelves are too close together, it's claustrophobic and I think it could be solved by some clever rearrangements but this a store where most of the yarns don't have prices on them and so you have to ask for everything. Prices can be quite high compared to other local yarn stores but the experience of shopping in a cramped, dark place and constantly having to ask for prices is just not an experience I wish to pay for. None of these things are permanent but the store seems resistant to change. It's a pity., why pay more than you would online or in any other local yarn store for an unpleasant experience. Nancy, the owner, is a great character whether her force of nature appeals to you or not. Space limits the comfort of knit nights, however and so I haven't spent much time enjoying the company of the regulars. Sales are good but as the 9 yarns i looked at we're over msrp and therefore overpriced in the first place, your not saving as much as you might think. The store refuses discounts to Knit at Night Guild cardholders. read more

Yes, its small. Yes, its cramped. Yes , Nancy may not always be your grandma and "hug your neck", when you walk in. And yes, the classes can appear to be quite cliquish when you walk in on a Saturday. But if you need yarn and/or supplies and Hobby Lobby or Michael's doesn't (ever) carry them, then THIS is where you need to go. I've found a lot of the " better" yarns there and while they may be only a bit higher than online, I'm still NOT paying for shipping or waiting for its arrival days later. I go to Nancy's forr her products. Not warm fuzzies. I get those from hubby and my dogs. :). read more

This tiny but packed store is great. Nancy was helpful, friendly but not overbearing, willing to offer help but not pushy. I've been back to Nancy's Knits since writing my first review, so I thought I should update. I've added a star because I do think that Nancy is very knowledgeable and helpful. The store does have some very nice yarns. I would say that for small projects and impulse buys, the shop is great. If you are planning a large project, though, the shop may not have enough of whatever yarn you need. The shop is especially well-stocked in category 4 yarns and larger. They also have a good supply of tools. The shop's price tags need to be updated. On more than one occasion I've been charged more at the counter than the yarn was marked, though not a lot more. read more

I will agree that the inventory is impressive, although, one could argue over stocked to the point of total chaos. However, from my first visit, I was treated beyond rudely by the owner "Nancy". Thought/hoped that after spending a lot of money in the store she might lighten-up, but today I went in simply to ask her to check my gauge to back me up. I was treated so rudely in front of other customers that I can honestly say I have never been so embarrassed. My biggest regret is that I didn't call her out loud and clear. My daughter and I visited the shop today and had a lovely experience. Nancy helped to get us set up with the correct yarns, needles and a beginners book to start our crochet adventures. She also gave us some tips for online guidance if we need it. I found the environment very friendly, with other ladies coming into the store, working on projects and offering advice to us "newbies." My daughter had a wonderful time (as did I). The only reason I give 4 rather than 5 stars is because I have no basis for comparison, but for us, this was exactly what we were looking for. And the qualities range from nice and cheap for a fiber artist on a budget to luxurious for the knitter with a bottomless pocket. I love the selection of Noro yarns. Yes the shop is small but I love going through every nook and cranny to see what I can find. But whenever I need it Nancy is always ready to help. I really honestly have never ever seen her in a bad mood, she is always pleasant to me and the customers that I've seen her serve and I am always in her shop. Summary: I'm not going to buy yarn in a shop if I don't know how much it costs, and almost none of the prices in this shop are marked. This yarn shop has an excellent selection of yarns: sock yarns, lace yarns, high end wool, silk, cotton, and alpaca yarns (like Schaefer, Madelinetosh, Bristol yarn), cheaper yarns (like Plymouth's Gallway.) The color palette is also very nice and offers a good variety of pastels, bright colors, naturals, solids, and variegated colors- many other yarn shops don't carry every colorway offered for a given yarn and I've been in some yarn shops where the owner was going through a mustard yellow phase or only bought natural colorways like taupe. However, despite the good selection, I probably won't be shopping here. Very few of the prices are marked, which is a nuisance if you are browsing. Price is one important consideration when buying, and if there are 7 or 8 worsted yarns that could do for a pattern, I want to be able to compare up front. I don't want to ask the sales person the prices of 15 different yarns and then try to keep track of them in my head. I also didn't like how overcrowded the aisles were. With the dim lighting, it is hard to see the true colors of the yarns on the lower shelves. The store smelled a little musty too. If you have mobility issues (like needing a wheelchair or cane) or even if you are a large person, I'm afraid you might not be able to navigate the narrow alleys without tripping or getting trapped. read more

Wake Up Houston. Nancy's Knits is a treasure in Houston with the availability of yarns and knitting stock impossible to find elsewhere. Forget cheap yarn like Michael's and Hobby Lobby. If you are going to spend the time to knit a treasure you should not only have available cheap synthetic yarns. Nancy has wonderful yarns that feel fantastic, are natural and are not combustible. Nancy herself is a vast treasure of knowledge that she easily shares as well as providing important advice to make the hours of knitting worthwhile. I went to Nancy's with my elderly mother who wanted to buy supplies to knit a baby blanket for her great grandchild. Nancy was helpful in finding what my mom needed. Before we left the shop, I tried on a pre-made sweater that was hanging in the store and loved it. I said I hadn't knit in many, many years and needed another hobby like a hole in the head. Nancy said the pattern was very easy and was eager to sell me the yarn/supplies. She encouraged me to come in the upcoming Saturday for "assistance" when several knitters gathered in the shop and I could get plenty of help. So I went ahead, made the purchase (nearly $100) and showed up on Saturday, when yes, there indeed were several knitters working on their projects and socializing. I happened to sit next to a lovely lady who turned out to have great experience in knitting. She helped me get started and was wonderful. I did not keep her from her own project and although I needed supervision, it was only occasionally. However, I was surprised to find that on this Saturday, Nancy was NOT helpful. In fact, I would call her surly. She mentioned several times that I should take her classes (which are not free). The tone of her voice was not friendly and I was very embarrassed to have asked for help. I happened to notice that she also gossiped about other "regulars" who didn't happen to be at this particular Saturday session. Several times when customers came in the store, Nancy did not get up from the table, but would ask them how she could help them and then point to where they could find what they needed. Nancy is a rude woman and I would never, ever dream of entering her store again. read more
