We loved our first teacher, Mrs. Debbie. She was very understanding and helpful as we were first time parents and this was all new to us. Also, Mrs. Camille was very helpful as we understood our daughter can be hard headed at times so she was very understanding. Unfortunately, that's really where our good experiences stopped. I will spare the paragraphs and paragraphs of complaints I can list, but to make it short, my wife and I were constantly reminded of how much of a "troublemaker" our daughter was. We would consistently receive attitude and dirty looks when our daughter did not have a good day. We also were potty training and got to a good point where she was having no accident overnight or during the day during the 2 week winter break and that's is when she was moved to the "3's classroom." Upon returning to school she regressed significantly and constantly complained of rashes and pain, and we were blamed for this regression and told that if she does not improve, they would "not be able to accommodate her in this facility." The end our experience was when we received a call that we needed to meet with the director upon picking up our daughter. That day, we met in a room and I was told that our daughter choked another child (which she has NEVER done that at home or anywhere for that matter) and handed 6 MONTHS worth of "discipline issues" that we were never asked to meet about before. They told us that that day was her last day and that she was not to return to the school. From our perception, it seemed that her "behavior issues" were less behavior problems, and more a lack of stimulation/ wasn't the typical easy child that will just sit and be quiet. Our daughter has since started at a new school and has not had any of the issues listed above, and in fact we are told every week how good she is doing and how much fun she is having. At home since starting the new school we have been amazed at how much she has learned and how much she loves going to school.

The Facts: This is…read morethe official childcare center on the University of Nevada, Reno campus, and you must either study or work at UNR to enroll, but then your child and future children are "in" for life (so to speak). It is NAEYC accredited (Goddard is the only other preschool with this in Reno so far). Fees are slightly sliding scale based on parents' income, and there's a small discount for siblings who are enrolled. The campus had 20,000 students, faculty, and staff in 2013, but this childcare facility, which is intended to both increase access for women and parents to higher education/academia and provide classroom experience to aspiring teachers, only accepts eight babies each year (with a couple more spaces for each group of older kids). Getting In: You can get on the waiting list for the following fall as soon as you are pregnant, but not sooner in case you're trying to conceive. If you do get in for the fall, you'll have to start paying in August to hold your spot even if the baby isn't born or six weeks old yet. If you wait a few months to apply, you may never get in due to the long wait list. The CFRC gives preference to the siblings of children already in the center, and with only 8 spots, the wait list can have as many as 30 or more infants hoping to get any remaining open spots not filled by those younger siblings that go to the top of the list. If you're on the waiting list, you will NOT be automatically notified of your standing on that list, so making other arrangements or choosing to wait it out may be difficult. Tip: Just call and ask. The Pros: * Location: Next to the historic and beautiful UNR quad... pedestrian friendly place to take kids on walks to the libraries, stadium, Manzanita Lake, and more * Credentials: Because it is accredited and used for research as well, the teachers are always current on the latest teaching research, classrooms are monitored well, and the student to teacher ratio is fantastic. Teachers have four-year degrees and the patience of saints for the most part. * Play based: Reggio Approach; circle time, sensory exploration, dramatic play, exercise, and socialization. * Decent playgrounds with little concrete. Kids need mud, dirt, and plants in my opinion. * Teachers & student workers are great! * Sense of community * Foster grandparent volunteers * Two snacks provided per day with Horizon milk or water; real cups, plates, cutlery * Regular child assessments and parent-teacher meetings; early intervention program The Cons I (opportunities for short-term improvement): * Limited hours compared to other daycares (7:30-5:30) * Closures for professional development with no alternative care offered * No current website or online calendar for enrolled families; no policies published online; inconsistent (sometimes good, sometimes not there) email notifications of closures and events The Cons II (opportunities for long-term improvement with greater UNR investment): * Small, dated facility; limited capacity * No commercial kitchen = no hot lunch option * Very limited parking

There are some great things about CFRC, including some very dedicated teachers and long-term…read moreassistant teachers. It's also very convenient (particularly if one works/studies on the south end of campus). Parking can be easy, but can be a nightmare. There are some problematic things about CFRC. First, CFRC is there to train those in UNR's child development program. With it's paucity of spots, in no way can it ever be a real child care option to UNR's large body of faculty, staff, and student families. It does serve special-needs kids of Washoe county on a limited, afternoon basis. Second, perhaps due to the first point above, CFRC makes no attempt to target the parts of the UNR community that most need the convenience or reduced costs it provides. Unlike other campus child care programs (the University of Oregon, for example), student families have no priority for enrollment (though they can take advantage of an income-based sliding scale). Despite published policies, those families who are allowed to enroll are often loosely associated with UNR (for example working for an agency or organization with an on-campus office, yet no UNR paycheck). Worse, families with an existing child in CFRC are allowed first choice in enrolling younger children even after neither parent is affiliated with UNR (in some cases several years later). Policy updates may eventually appear in CFRC's official handbook, but for years (and likely still) they thumbed their nose at their own rules (according to several sources, this was a huge improvement over a previous enrollment director who simply offered spots to her friends!). The effect this has is that it is virtually impossible to enroll a first child for whom a space was not reserved when the child was newly in-utero. Okay, perhaps not impossible: you may get a spot 3-4 years later, at which point you are likely already established in another child care center. Or you may find a spot in their less-in-demand kindergarten program for your older child, allowing your younger child to jump to the front of the line. I know personally of several families who went this route; resulting in enrollment for two or more children over the course of 6 months while other families had waited for 4 years without enrollment. Third, consistent with the nepotism shown to existing, almost completely non-student, and often ex-(if ever)-UNR-affiliated families, CFRC teachers and administrators appear over-accommodating of poor behaviors of some of their long-term students (often older or younger siblings of current or past CFRC children). The same sorts of repeated behaviors from a Washoe County student would almost certainly result in removal from CFRC (which I observed). The unfortunate effect of this over-accommodation is an essential "robbing" of staff attention by CFRC teachers and assistants that could be more evenly distributed among students without (or with far fewer) behavioral issues. Parents of children without these issues essentially pay the same for less. With a growing UNR faculty and student body, it's time for the College of Education to get real about providing a child care option that both fairly and adequately serves the UNR community. Unfortunately, from all appearances, the administration of CFRC seems happy with the dysfunctional status quo.
