"This person" (me) of course is not a patient, as the NanoKnee Arroyo Grande office staff of Dr. Thomas Ferro, as well as Ferro himself, by their irresponsible acts the day of my appointment, made the appointment impossible. After persisting for several hours the day of my appointment, to get no answers to questions about the appointment, I was finally told 1 hour after my appointment time, that the doctor who was still on another appointment, would talk with me (by zoom), in 1/2 hour. Because I had an evening engagement, I was not able to wait, and told the staff so, but was not offered an apology, or another appointment time. After my experience with the office staff of Dr. Ferro, I would never consider scheduling surgery with him. Offices definitely are a reflection of their owners. read more

After investigating Nanoknee surgery (in California, Texas, & soon in Ohio) for 3+ years, my younger sister had hers in Sept 2022 in Arroyo Grande CA. NO pain, NO pain meds, only stiffness. WOW! I had the Nanoknee done 3 years ago. Love that it was done by spinal and not general anesthesia. I was back at work 9 days later. Max pain was 2 out of 10. No physical therapy needed. Dr. Eberly in Downey was fantastic. Spared my ACL ligament, so I can ski and play tennis without problems. Great procedure for active people. Highly recommend the Nanoknee. Thank you for clarifying the non covered portion of the nano knee procedure. I understand now. One other question I have. Awhile ago perhaps 2 years, when I was inquiring about nano knee replacement, I thought I read that during the surgery a robotic procedure is used to shave the portion of the arthritic knee. Take the extra money to have 3D Nano team design your custom implant for your knees & Hips. Especially if you would like to continue enjoying your sports Snow & Water Skiing. I went to 3 other orthopedic Surgeons all said I would not be able to keep my Snow/Water Skiing up to the level I had been (especially the jumping). Dr Ferro's made me feel that as long as I train and keep in shape I would be able to Ski up to the same level. I was over the top happy and set up my replacement ASAP which went just as expected and I have been back on the water/snow with my left knee feeling better then ever. I'm now back in for my hips which my right Hip Replacement is scheduled on Jan 31st 2024. If I could give Dr. Thomas Ferro 100 stars, I would. He is a technically excellent and honest orthopedic surgeon. I have a nurse friend who was the fortunate recipient of his Nanoknee surgery. She drove close to 500 miles for him to perform the surgery and had an excellent outcome. So, I decided to schedule an appointment to find out whether I needed knee replacement surgery. Here is my story working with Dr. Ferro: I initially dealt with Charlotte, Dr. Ferro's phenomenal intake staff person, who worked diligently with me to ensure that my x-ray disks arrived at his office in time for my video appointment. The x-rays Dr. Ferro requested were more in-depth than other providers had requested in years past. From my consultation with Dr. Ferro, I learned that fortunately my knee did not have serious osteoarthritis and would not qualify for reconstructive surgery. I am grateful that Dr. Ferro did not try to talk me into an unnecessary surgery, which is a sign of his integrity. He recommended that I find an orthopedic surgeon who specializes in orthoscopic surgery. I told Dr. Ferro that I was planning to get an MRI of my knee. He offered to review my MRI disk to confirm that arthroscopic surgery was warranted. I sent a copy of my MRI disk to his office. Unfortunately, I was unable to schedule an appointment to discuss my MRI with Dr. Ferro prior to the planned arthroscopic surgery, since he was fully booked. However, Dr. Ferro was kind enough during his lunch hour to review my MRI and leave me a voice mail confirming that arthroscopic surgery would be the best choice. He did not recommend an orthopedic surgeon, so there was no collusion. I was relieved that Dr. Ferro, a world class surgeon who was not making money on my surgery, took the time to call me and agree that arthroscopic surgery was warranted. I am crossing my fingers that the surgeon I selected to perform the arthroscopic surgery will do as good job for me as Dr. Ferro does for his patients. read more

I had my Nano Knee Replacement surgery May 23, 2023. I have had other surgeries but this is my first Nano Surgery. Dr Ferro, his staff, the outpatient surgery center, the Choice Home Health visits were beyond wonderful. In this world it is hard to find true caring. Dr Ferro and his team are the most capable and caring health professionals around. I woke up with my new knee and immediately got out of bed and walked will full weight on my knee. Went to Nano Clinic for left knee replacement. Best experience for surgery. The check-in process was smooth. Surgery went well. The staff was great. Pain was very minimal. I was surprised by how quickly I was walking with a walker. But that was for safety more than need. Our only critique would be the communication process when we started the ball rolling. Since surgery was 4 hours from home, we had to utilize other medical facilities for consultation and pre surgery process. We weren't always sure who to contact for info. BEWARE!! Do your Research for the surgery and the follow up. I wish I had NEVER GONE HERE! I'm 51 years old and had decided to get knee replacement because of arthritis/acl. My surgery in January 2021seemed ok and then 2 weeks later major pain. Low and behold I had a STAPH MSSA(similar to MRSA) infection. I went back into 2nd surgery in February 2021 to have a "washout". I was on IV intravenous for 8 weeks with antibiotics 2x/day. Dr. Thomas Ferro BARELY (if AT ALL) checked in with me.. if you have a Staph infection where you could lose your leg and/or life.. you THINK YOUR DR. Would be checking In religiously.. BUT NO! 4 months later the infection was STILL THERE! I WENT TO ANOTHER DR! Dr. Daniel Oaks of Keck Medicine USC is GREAT!!! I had a 3rd surgery in June 2021 with Dr. Oaks to take everything (knee) out! A temporary with antibiotics was put in for 4 months! The infection is FINALLY OUT!!! I am so thankful it could have been MUCH WORSE!! Thank gosh I caught it in time and went with another Dr. Daniel Oaks. I have a 4th and FINAL SURGERY October 2021! This has been consuming my entire 2021 year health/mobility wise with young kids.. NOT HAPPY AT ALL with Dr. Thomas Ferro and NO FOLLOW UP! I got a new knee in July, great results. It was outpatient, I got there around 6 am and walked out around 130 pm. Couldn't believe it. You do your therapy on an app thru your phone. Great staff and everyone was very helpful. read more

On 1/20 went on the Nano Knee website and filled out my info for the office to get back to me. Nothing . . . . 1/28 called the phone number listed on site 805-329-3298 and after about 15 rings a young women answered. I explained I had filled out the request for contact, but no one had reached out to me. She asked with attitude "what do you want to know" and I stated I was curious if I qualified for Nanoknee (had heard you have to have a very specific issue with your knee for this surgery) and she proceeded to tell me what insurance they take. WTF that is not what I wanted to know but I see where their priorities are - defiantly not with are you a candidate for surgery. Also their website says takes Medicare but not HMO's. I have Plan G but they don't take any Blue Shield. Alot of other reviews talk about staff being short & rude and long wait times. Just had a total knee replacement done this week. I had had a traditional one before and didn't want to go thru that protracted recovery and pain again. Dr a Ferro really has his act together up at Arroyo Grande! Zara, Ncolle, Ramuel, Dr Amal (?), Simone (?) --I hope that's everyone--they all came and introduced themselves and we had a pleasant exchange prior to surgery. I wanted to wait on the preoperative sedation so I could meet Dr Ferro first, since before it was just a telehealth call. It was no problem--the anesthesiologist was great about it! I awoke with pain and they addressed it immediately; my pain was zero for the next 24 hrs! They have called me every day since and answer all my questions and take care of issues efficiently. Already I'm so glad I went the Nanoknee route and am recommending this method to my friends who have joint issues. On the first consultation Dr Ferro told me about the $7,509 that would not be covered by insurance, however that was general information and once they researched with my plan, I was only going to be responsible for about $1,600. Because of the shorter recovery period and home exercise program, I will end up spending more for the original traditional method with 3 mos of PT. Finding out the individual facts for your situation is key! No ruse here--just a really professional team and I know what to look for as a practicing RN with recovery room experience! I found out after surgery and giving $7500 out of pocket that my insurance investigated and then let me know that they would have paid the $7500. I was literally told as I walked out the door from my consultation that " by the way, there is a $7500 fee that insurance won't cover". Then day of surgery they ask me for 20% of surgery fee since my insurance is 80/20 but there was never mention of this ahead of time. I literally was asked just before I went back for surgery. So much more happened. It's been a year and a half and I do not have full range in my knee and still have no feeling on the right side of my leg. Very disappointing! And you have to question where that $7500 went because I don't see how six bioengineers have to help pick the right combination of prosthetics for an orthopedic surgeon with 30 years of experience. Sure Dr. Ferro is kind, it's called money. I would definitely research a different orthopedic surgeon, one that does Conformis because this is made especially for your joint, so specialized that the company sends the tools to go with them. read more

I had the Nanoknee done in March 2019. Beware of the $7500 out of pocket cost for a pre-fabricated joint. You have to sign a waiver saying the $7500 can't be billed to insurance. Then expect to pay whatever percentage that your insurance may not cover, they will ask for this two minutes before you go back for surgery. My insurance paid a good portion of this and I still have not received my refund, this since March 26. They will not provide you with an itemized statement for the $7500 so essentially you don't know what you are paying for. I was told I would have a 3D model made of my knee joint and that a joint would be made just for me. But the anesthesiologist told me that it is a joint made by Modal and that the bioengineers help pick the right combination of prothesis. For $7500? No one would tell me what was in my knee. I set off the alarm at TSA not knowing why. Then the anesthesiologist told me via text. My knee is doing well it's just all the skirting of the questions and not providing an itemized statement of where my $7500 went and still waiting for my refund of $604 since March 26. My advice is to find another orthopedic surgeon that does muscle sparing surgery and uses ConforMIS. My other knee will be done this way and there is no out of pocket cost. Oh and find one that doesn't use a tourniquet, that was the worst part of the surgery. Then they charge you for a brace that you only wear 24 hours, $333.
