This is probably the best-equipped gym I have ever used for free-weights. They have 7 squat racks…read moreas well as two squat cages and because of this, even at peak times I've only seen them all taken twice after coming 3 times a week for 6 months. Even those times, I did not have to wait long for one to become available. They use olympic-style bumper weights and put one set next to each rack rather than mounting them on the rack itself, and this keeps them much more organised and these weights go down to 0.5kg. They have a wide variety of bars too. On top of that, there's a huge dumbbell area, strongman things like stone balls and tractor tires, all manner of steps and wedges to use while lifting and a pretty good selection of machines, most of which are plate-loaded, and they keep a bowl of chalk in the center of the main floor for anyone who wants it. They have a selection of benches too, including a few to use with the squat racks. Only one of the horizontal benches has a safety bar though, which is unfortunate as if you don't have a spotter watching you, it's something essential for benching at a work weight. One thing you can definitely say about the place is that it's a gym that focuses on lifting weights. They have cardio equipment too, such as a few treadmills, a stair machine, an elliptical and a bike, but they aren't the main focus like they are in most gyms, which suits me. The staff are all very friendly and run a tight ship, keeping the place in good order. You'll never see plates and weights left around the place in a mess like you do at a lot of other gyms. That said, I do think there is a small bit of room for improvement. The dressing rooms are very basic and the lockers are badly beaten and worn. The usual place to leave bags is instead under the stairs which is safe enough, but still a bit messy and awkward to get into. They don't directly employ any trainers so if you want someone to help you with a program or personal training, you have to hire one of their outside guys which costs extra (whereas a lot of other gyms will have someone on staff to give you a training program for free). The car parking is also a problem as they only have a small bit of space and people often have to park places that aren't actually parking spaces.

How could you not try a trainer who calls himself "The Transformation Catalyst"? Dominic Munnelly…read moreis the man behind the dream and is a highly enthusiastic personal trainer based on the southside. He regularly contributes to RSVP etc, has an interesting blog (http://thetransformationcatalyst.wordpress.com/) and is very active answering questions and giving advice on boards.ie. When I went to see him he was in a smaller gym but moved to the Crossfit gym a few weeks later-looks like it's far more roomy. I'm pretty sure he could put you through your paces in any location-indoors or outdoors though! Dominic was great at answering emails enquiring about his services and saw me early on a Saturday morning. Had a little assessment (not so sure about the body fat reading) and a fun workout-he's quite Crossfit (http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/what-crossfit.html) based with solid Olympic lifting thrown in and sensible nutritional advice. I liked it that he also incorporated yoga and foam rolling-good for the perpetually injured! Wasn't thrilled that he insisted on telling me my weight even though I begged him not to...but I'd stopped crying within a week or so. He emailed me a programme a few days later which was nice and gave plenty of things to keep me occupied-mix of weights and Crossfit workouts. It was a bit too full of push-ups and bodyweight squats for me though....my shoulders and hip flexors were threatening tendonitis within a couple of weeks. I'd have preferred if the training session included a run through/more detailed discussion of the programme too-didn't have some of the equipment in my gym. Bit pricey at €80 per session but he is good and is amenable to doing follow up sessions whenever you like. He also includes a free "check up" the week after to make sure you understand all the exercises etc. I'd probably have to say the Edge (http://www.yelp.ie/biz/the-edge-clontarf-dublin) suited me better in the end-David there picked up on shoulder and hip tightness before he gave me a programme and purposely avoided push-ups and squats to try to correct imbalances. And that was without being told I'd had issues before! Bonus: Dominic brought me a homemade flapjack. Feeding me on a Saturday morning merits an extra star!

I was actually pretty surprised at the price range as well - ranging from 31 - 49 per month which is pretty insane value in my book. If you join Sandyford, you automatically get membership in Camden too. There's a very decent cardio corner with some serious looking climbers that caught my eye, a massive TRX set up, impressive looking static weight machines and an even more impressive range of free weights. What really struck me though was the lay out of the place - every little detail has been thought through very carefully and the flow is spot-on. Oh there's also a huge spinning room but seriously, spinning is the devil's work. No need for it at all. Spacious changing rooms with sparkling showers, hairdryers etc complete the package. In a short period I've dropped almost a stone while building a lot of muscle and fitness endurance - I've seen improvement week-on-week with how much I can lift, bench, and squat; how long I can push through HIIT exercises & circuit work, and going from from struggling to do just 10 pushups once, to regular sets of 20-30, as well as going from barely 1 pullup to multiple sets of 4-6 pullups in a row. Keith also gives very achievable nutrition goals which is tailored to your goals - for me, wanting to lose fat, he has approached it not so much as a "diet", rather an easy-to-adapt-to change in in-take levels and overall calorie-deficit - for example having a larger amount of chicken and veg than usual for dinner means I hit protein targets, but I can still eat potatoes - all while never feeling hungry or like I'm not eating enough. Couldn't recommend Keith enough!

I chanced upon this page and just thought that I'd add a short review about Iveagh Fitness Club…read morebecause previous reviews on this thread are outdated (since Iveagh was taken over and transformed). Iveagh is a completely different place both aesthetically and in terms of service since it was taken over in about 2016 or 2017 (not sure when). I have never reviewed anything online but I feel compelled to post my first review because I think that Iveagh deserves credit for its amazing transformation and I think that it is also fair (for prospective members who might enjoy its wonderful facilities) to post something that is up to date, since the reviews on this thread are from 2015 and as far back as 2009 when it was a completely different operation. I'm going to be completely honest by divulging the fact that I have done work for Iveagh over the years since it was acquired. I produced many videos for them to promote their facilities, their classes and their personal trainers. My reason for stating this is just in case anyone thinks that this reads like a post is from a direct employee of Iveagh. It's not. Regarding previous comments, the swimming pool and Spa area (which was historically opened in 1905) was completely overhauled last year and is just beautiful. It is a protected building and whilst everything had to be kept structurally intact, it was updated so very tastefully. The facilities are top notch and the staff are amazing. I won't link to any pages, just so that this doesn't look like an advertisement. You can look them up for yourself. I just wanted to update this review thread because I felt that the reviews were unfair, only because they were outdated and don't reflect the newly updated Fitness Club and its wonderful staff.

I rarely have to wait for any machines, particularly in the cardio section, but the odd time I have to hang around for some of the weight machines. It has a big pool (which I never use) and a spinning studio and aerobic studio. I have gone to quite a few of their classes and have to admit that I think their kai bo/aerobic/step classes are only ok. I've been to much better ones elsewhere. Those who pay the bills? Each time I've come in here, I've had one gripe or another. Either they are too busy chatting amongst themselves to say hello or goodbye, or they're just not super arsed in being friendly. I get that they're busy, but this is not a cheap gym by any stretch of the imagination so it would be nice to be received with a bit more courtesy. I arrived today at 1.42pm to register for spinning class at 2pm. They say that registration opens 15 mins before each class, so despite being there and ready to go, the receptionist turned to another spinner and I telling us we'd have to wait to register. Now this isn't some high tech scenario on a computer that literally doesn't open til the set time - it's jotting your name down on a piece of paper. I would like to say in full disclosure that the receptionist was tending to someone else at the time, but if she had enough time to turn to us and tell us we'd have to wait til quarter to for signing our name, surely she'd have had enough time to pass us the registration paper. Thankfully which is what another staff member did, once he heard the comment from his colleague. It took him about 0.2 seconds to pass us the sheet. A bit of common sense wouldn't go astray in situations like this. I'm still a major fan of this gym and most of the staff so far have been great, but it would be great if there was a bit less of a "Computer Says Noooooo" attitude in here (What an episode that was!)
I need to update this review with major news!…read more After a hard training, I usually go as far as the shower and don't even take the time to dry my hair before I go home. This time I felt like pushing my boundaries, wearing my bikini in public, and going to the spa. 1* For the spa: It's called spa but it's basically a huge swimming pool, a sauna, a steam room, a jaccuzzi, and tropical showers - meaning different water temperature. The place is warm - not too warm ! - and clean. I have a bit of an OCD when it comes to hygiene and this place has my stamp of approval. 1* For the sauna: Dry heat as you would expect. The interior is made of wood and the heat place is made of stones. There are 3 different levels and - of course - as the heat goes up the highest seats are warmer. It's not too hot so you can have a good sweat. Don't stay too long though and do not wear jewelry - you will get burnt. 1* For the showers: I love to alternate sauna / medium heat shower to cold / steam room. Some people like to take a cold shower right away but I don't appreciate the extreme change in temperature. I go for medium heat shower and possibly cold after that, it has to be step by step. 1* For the steam room: What a great sensation to be in a steam room! The heat and humidity is no overwhelming and that's a plus. You can't stay very long - as per usual - but you can still handle a good moment. Also there is an ambiance music played in the room to help fully relax. This place is a treat ! You eliminate the bad toxines in your body, you work on your breathing system, and you relax all at once. I haven't tried the swimming poor nor the jaccuzzi but that should happen very soon. 1* For the hair dryer: OMG Those hair dryers are so amazing it only take a few minutes to get my hair completely dry. And my hair is long to my waist. And not easily cooperative when it comes to drying! I need to take a picture of how everything is set up, but in short you can find 4/5 hair dryers and 1 hair straightener along a long mirror. You have space to put your brush or other hair/make-up products and get ready. Even when it's busy girls always make space for one another. Very friendly changing room ! 1* For the free trial: I asked for a few trial tickets for my boyfriend. They couldn't give any because this gets sent from the headquarter. At first I thought it was a bummer but then I remembered that a couple of months ago I received free trial tickets by post and a 5 day pass as well ! Should I remove a star ? It's true there should be more flexibility on that aspect but on the other hand they send a lot of incentives by post. I leave this star for now :D 1* For the beauty centre: Today I noticed a new poster in the entrance promoting a new beauty centre. Opening soon facilities for waxing, semi-permanent make-up, manicure, and pedicure. There was something else but I don't remember... Anyway, depending on the price I might want to take a look and report to my fellow yelpers :) That's all for now. Let me know if you have any questions and I will do my best to answer them ! #yelpmeplease #eliteyelper #yelp
